passed away on Sat. March 5, 2005 and resided in Mount Vernon, WA

John Roberson Davis, 98, of Mount Vernon, Washington passed away quietly in his home on Saturday, March 5, 2005. A native of Athens, TX, and eldest of six sons, Mr. Davis graduated from Baylor University with a degree in business in 1929. In 1930 he and his college friend, Homer Bohmfalk, joined the westward migration of the Great Depression – funding their trip by recycling glass bottles picked up along the roadside and doing seasonal farm labor along the way. They eventually landed in Red Bluff, CA and subsequently founded the B&D Electric Company in 1932. John later opened his own business, Davis Electric.

Quickly afflicted by “love at first sight”, he married Ruth W. Howell, the lovely organist at the local Methodist Church in 1934. During WWII he worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California and participated in the resurrection of the Pearl Harbor Fleet. A responsible and concerned businessman, Mr. Davis served several terms on the red Bluff City Council in the 1970’s. In 1980, after being seduced by his sons’ properties in the San Juan Islands, he and his wife relocated to Lopez Island in Washington State, and moved to Mount Vernon in 1990.

John was an avid football fan and a great lover of sports of all kinds, participating in badminton, fishing, boating and skiing to name a few. He learned to ski at the age of 40, and earned his pilot's license at 50. He and his wife were devoted to church activities – she at the organ and he in the choir for over 60 years. He also loved singing bass in the Red Bluff Methodist Church Barbershop Quartet.

He was preceded in death by his wife of more than 60 years, and is survived by his daughter, Joan F. Fraley of Mount Vernon, WA; his sons, Robert H. Davis of Port Hadlock, WA and Raymond J. Davis of Seattle, WA. Eight wonderful grandchildren and 3 delightful great-grandchildren also survive him.

Scott D. Gilkey

Born in Zion, Illinois on March 1, 1966

passed away on Wed. February 16, 2005 and resided in Mount Vernon, WA

Douglas "Scott" Gilkey, age 38, passed away in his sleep on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in Mount Vernon. He was born on March 1, 1966 in Zion, IL to Lance and Barbara (Linder) Gilkey.

He was in the Skagit County Jail at the time of his death on assault charges, but was expected to be released on February 28th due to evidence that he acted in self-defense. Scott was in worse shape than the person he allegedly assaulted was. Although not sent to the hospital, nor did he require stitches, his mental health advisor felt that he suffered a concussion. Efforts to confirm this suspicion were ignored, and the cause of Scott’s death is unknown at this time. Due to the article that appeared in the Herald regarding this incident, the family members felt it was necessary to set the record straight because Scott had suffered enough in his life. He should be able to die in peace.

Scott was a troubled soul and after graduating from Cascade High School in Everett, WA in 1984, he started doing drugs and began the downward spiral that he was never fully able to recover from.

Inevitably, drugs led to prison, and prison leads to pressures from society that a person cannot always cope with. Inabilities to fit in with "normal" people makes gravitation to people you feel more comfortable with a reality that seems to perpetuate the problems. Scott regretted the path he had chosen and was doing his utmost to correct his errors. In spite of his faults he was a loving, caring, out-going individual. He possessed many talents and had hoped to use them to change his life around. We feel God looked down and knew that Scott had suffered enough and it was time to take him home. Scott, we love you and will always miss you; but we know you are in a better place. There are several people in the community that have taken a special interest in Scott and provided him with the support he needed. We know he appreciated their help and we would like to thank Colleen Kenimond, attorney; Scott Schreiber and Richard Sprague from Compass Health; and the Honorable Judge Skelton. Thank you for caring.

His parents, Lance and Barbara Gilkey; two sisters, Tracy Crossman and husband Kurt; Lisa Rhodes and husband Cris; one uncle, Tom Linder and wife Beth; and one aunt, Colleen Torgeson, survive Scott. His son, Christopher Barrett, who has been adopted by his aunt, Carisa Barrett, also survives him. Christopher meant to world to Scott.

Visitation will be at Kern Funeral Home on Monday, February 21, 2005 from 12 Noon to 8:00 PM. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, February 22, 2005 at 2:30 PM in Fern Hill cemetery, Anacortes, WA.

passed away on Mon. February 14, 2005 and resided in Mount Vernon, WA

Marion George Hauenstein, Jr., 78, of Mount Vernon was called home by his Lord Monday, February 14, 2005 after a long and fulfilling life.

The son of Marion George Hauenstein and Pearl Adelle Moore Hauenstein was born on September 14, 1926 in Sedro Woolley, WA. Growing up on the family dairy farm in the Baker Heights community east of Mount Vernon, George, as he preferred to be called, was a lifelong resident of Skagit County.

On May 24, 1952, George married the girl of his dreams, Ethel Olin and they spent the next 52 years holding hands as they worked together in raising their children and grandchildren.

George worked as the manager of White Star Van and Storage in Mount Vernon and later in Anacortes for over 30 years, and later began a courier business delivering medical records to offices in and around Skagit County.

George was very active outdoors and loved to fish, hunt, and go camping with family and friends. He also enjoyed morning coffee breaks with friends.

George was a member of the Viewcrest Assembly of God Church, where he was a faithful and active supporter for over 40 years. He worked many years at the church helping to maintain the building and grounds. While not a vocally expressive individual, George would minister with the gifts God gave him, strong hands and a willing heart.

George is survived by his wife, Ethel, of the home. Two children and their spouses, Doug and Jo Ann Hauenstein of Mustang, Oklahoma, Roberta and Louis Coletta of Burlington, WA, five grandchildren, Cerah, Johnson, Ann, Stephen and Nicholas: two great-grandchildren McKenzie and Dominick.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 16th 12:00 noon to 8:00 PM at Kern Funeral Home.
