Violet Crystal Wheatcraft

Born in Paoli, Indiana on Aug. 8, 1920

Departed on Jun. 28, 2011 and resided in Kennewick, WA.

Violet Crystal Wheatcraft passed gently from this earthly world on the evening of June 28, 2011 at Guardian Angel Homes in Richland, WA.

Vi was born August 8, 1920 in Paoli, IN to John Elmer and Alma Fay Beaty.

She grew up on a busy, working farm with her brothers, Ernest and Paul and her sisters, Freda, Eva, Vonda and Opal.

After graduation from Paoli High School, Vi moved to Terre Haute, IN to study cosmetology.

She was working in Terre Haute as a hair stylist when she was introduced to Ray Wheatcraft by a mutual friend in September, 1940.

After-what they were to call-a "love at first sight" meeting and a 16-day courtship, they got married and went to meet each others families.

They built a house in Greenwood IN where they raised their three children: Jean McKenna (Patrick) Prosser, WA; Phyllis Daik (Sam), Sugarland, TX; and Paul Wheatcraft (Annie) Prior Lake, MN.

Throughout their 60-year marriage Vi and Ray tackled a variety of projects together.

During the 40's when Ray became a pilot and flight instructor and built an airport with his two brothers, Vi flew with him, helped with bookwork, ran the airport snack bar and even helped Ray paint airport directions for pilots on the top of the Greenwood Community House.

Their children became accustomed to taking family trips by air and spending time at the airport with Mom & Dad watching the planes and hovering around the coke machine when a new pilot soloed and bought cokes for all present.

In 1972 when Ray was transferred with Gulf Oil to Mississippi, Vi and Ray designed and built a house in the country near Seminary.

Their new home in Mississippi became a very special place for them where they made many dear friends.

Vi and Ray both loved reading, music and nature and spent time together bird watching and building and walking a trail in the woods around their home.

In 1982 Vi and Ray spent the first three years of their retirement living in their motor home and seeing the United States, traveling to all of the 48 contiguous states.

They returned to Seminary and lived there until 1998 when they moved to Kennewick, WA to be near family.

Our mother, Vi, was deeply spiritual and saw goodness and beauty in her family, the world and the new people she met. Her quiet wisdom, sweet smile and sense of humor served her well throughout her life especially through the last years challenged by dementia.

Vi was a kind and gentle spirit who is beloved to family and friends.

She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

She is survived by her three children and her grandchildren: Lisa Archer (Eddie) Spirit Lake, ID; Michele Fendrich (David); Vancouver, WA; Sharon Ensley (Randall) Shawnee, KS; Shannon Richardson (Mike) Selah, WA: and Jill James (Brian) Vancouver, WA; Laura Russell (Dallas) Cypress, TX; Laith Daik (Jodie) Houston, TX; Darel Daik (Michele) Cypress, TX; Todd Wheatcraft (Lori) Prior Lake, MN; Aaron Wheatcraft (Amy) Lakeville, MN; and Paula Wurst (Tom) St. Michael, MN.

Vi is also survived by her sisters, Freda Sheets (Bill) Anderson, IN; and Opal Taylor (Bob) Roseville, CA; and 13 great-grandchildren: Sharleen, Josh and Jake Archer; Megan Fendrich; Alexander, Nicholas, Christian and Preston Richardson; Zachary, Justin and Ryan James; Jack and Will Ensley; Silas and Skyler Daik; Lexie Russell; Riley and Ian Wheatcraft; Ella and Sam Wheatcraft; Carter and Tyler Wurst.

Our family is very grateful to the caregivers and staff of Guardian Angel Homes and Hospice of Tri-Cities for their care and support.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Mueller's Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union in Kennewick, with viewing from 11:30 to 1:00.

Inurnment will be in Seminary, MS.

Departed on Oct. 11, 2011 and resided in Richland, WA.

cemetery: Evergreen cemetery

Kenneth Evert passed away Oct. 11, 2011 at the age of 92, due to natural causes.

Known by old timers as "Hank", Ken was born July 14, 1919 in Seattle, WA to Thomas & Amelia Evert.

The family moved to Benton City, WA that same year.

He graduated from Kiona Benton in 1937.

He moved to California to work for North American Aviation until he enlisted in the Army Air Force in July 1942.

He was stationed at East Wretham, Air Base in North Central England, where he was in the 395th Service Squadron, 8th Air Force as a ground crew member keeping fighter planes flying.

He met and married his wife Peggy Smith on Sept. 3, 1945, while stationed in England.

They settled in Benton City the following May 1946 after she traveled by boat to New York City and cross country by train to join Ken.

Ken worked at Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane, WA for some years before coming back to Benton City to help with the farm after his father became ill.

Farming was tough and not too profitable, so Ken went to work at the Hanford Site.

At the Hanford site he worked for GE and Rockwell as a truck driver until his retirement in 1984.

Ken and Peggy moved to Richland in 1989 into the Alterra Edgewater retirement home.

Ken and Peggy enjoyed their retirement years by traveling overseas to England, Ireland, and Australia, as well as Wisconsin and Pennsylvania to see his family members.

They also traveled to reunions with other servicemen from the 395th Service Squadron on several occasions.

After Peggy passed away in 1994, Ken continued to travel with his son to the reunions and with his daughter on family vacations.

In his later years he enjoyed seeing many airplane shows and events - if there was a B-17 flying, Ken always wanted to be there.

On October 8th, Ken took a final trip with his son Jeff to gamble at the "tame horse" casino as he liked calling it, to make a donation to the nickel slots.

He is survived by his sons, Steve Evert (wife Sarah), Spokane, WA, Jeff Evert, Richland, WA, daughter Norma Baide (husband Dan), Richland, WA, grandchildren, Scott Evert, Kenneth Evert, Sean Baide, Matthew Baide, and great grandchildren Lauren, Brad, Haley, Cole, Mason and Chloe - they are all little Evert's.
