Rose Simmons
Tuesday, 22 December 2009
Rose Simmons passed away on Dec. 16 at the age of 71.
Rose was born in Nampa, Idaho to Emery and Bernice McNinch, and was raised in Vale, Oregon until her family moved to Northport her sophomore year where she finished school.
She started her journey of being mom in Northport and later moved to Colville. Rose spent a large portion of her life helping in her kids’ activities, ranging from assisting in 4-H to keeping the scorebooks at basketball and baseball games. She would rarely miss any of their events and dreaded the days when two events conflicted and she couldn’t make it to both. After all her kids graduated, Rose went back to work, especially enjoying her years working at Benny’s Colville Inn. She made lasting friendships with co-workers and her regular guests.
She was later diagnosed with kidney failure (caused by diabetes) and moved to Spokane to be closer to her doctors and dialysis. After starting dialysis, she again made many friends and enjoyed helping dialysis 'rookies' learn about the process. She fought a long eight years with this and never once did you hear her complain.
Rose was an avid sports fan who closely followed the Seahawks, Mariners and her favorite, Gonzaga basketball. You could always find out what game was on by giving her a call. She will forever be remembered for her loving, caring heart and crazy sense of humor.
She is survived by her three children: Debbie Zembruski (John Paradiso), Spokane; Larry Simmons (Letty) and his three children, Joy, Katrina and Breeanna, San Diego, CA; and Ed Simmons (Shelly) and his two children, Brittany and Haley, Chehalis. She is also survived by her siblings, Lee McNinch (Helen), Northport; Cecil McNinch (Edith), Colville; Helen Knapp (George), Colville, and special family friend, Dennis O’Keefe (Linda). She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service in Colville will be held in March with the date and location to be announced later.

Gladys Stewart
Tuesday, 22 December 2009
Gladys N. Stewart, age 94, a lifetime resident of Colville, passed away on Dec. 20, 2009 in Spokane. Gladys was born on Sept. 20, 1915 in Colville, the daughter of Clifford William and Elsie Mae (DeGrief) Hotchkiss.
She attended school in Colville and was a 12-year senior who graduated in 1933. She then attended business school in Spokane. Gladys returned to Colville and worked for Fred Draper and Draper Lumber.
She was later introduced to Leslie Eugene Stewart and after a short courtship, they were wed on July 3, 1938 in Walla Walla. The young couple returned to Colville and soon started a family. Gladys worked in the home and enjoyed tending to the needs of her growing family.
In 1960, she and Les started their own logging company. She helped to support the needs of the company from home until Les preceded her in death in 1973. Gladys then took a more active role in the logging company. She enjoyed the many roles she supported, including wife, mother and business partner, but she cherished her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother. It was with great pride and a warm treat from the oven that she welcomed her grandchildren into her home. She looked forward to their daily visits from the bus stop and relished their company.
Gladys was best described as unconditional - unconditional in love for her family, unconditional generosity and unconditional nurturer. Her peach pie, cookies and fruit cakes complimented the huge 'meat and potato' meals she prepared. No one at Gladys’ table ever left hungry unless by choice. She was the perpetual optimist who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touch as just the kindest 'sweet little old lady'.
Gladys was preceded in death by her husband, Les; grandson, John 'Hooter' Stewart; sisters, Marie Yates and Margaret Hotchkiss; brothers, Albert, Arthur, Ken and Vern Hotchkiss.
She is survived by her two sons, John Stewart and his wife, Edie, Dick Stewart and wife, Kathy all of Colville; a daughter, Betty Harrow, Westport; grandchildren, P.J. Stewart and wife, Leann, Les Stewart and wife, Chris, Tammy Stewart, Tricia Robertson and husband, Dan, Wendy Stenbeck, Jay Stewart and wife, Nicole, Ron Hopper and wife, Lacey; seven great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and friends.
A funeral service for Mrs. Gladys N. Stewart will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 28 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville. A graveside service will follow at the Mountain View Park cemetery in Colville.
Memorial contributions may be given to either Meals-on-Wheels or the charity of choice.
Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Judy Platts
Wednesday, 28 July 2010
Judith 'Judy' Beth Dodge Platts, a resident of Colville passed away following a long-term battle with Multiple Sclerosis on July 23, 2010 in Colville. She was 71. Judy was born on January 4, 1939 in Salina, KS, the daughter of Allen Rickenbacher and Barbara Brann (Simpson) Dodge.
Judy was raised in Salina, where she attended school and graduated from Salina High School in 1957. During high school, Judy worked as a lifeguard and swim instructor. Her love of the arts and her artistic abilities shined early with her decoration and creation of stage props and drawings in high school. Judy then began college at the Monticello College in Illinois and later transferred to the University of Kansas. While at the University of Kansas, she pledged and became a lifetime member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Her zest for life and new experiences led her to a nine-year career as a stewardess for United Airlines.
During this time, she was based in Denver, CO and Seattle. She embraced the opportunity to travel abroad. She snow skied at many internationally renowned resorts and immersed herself into cultures of all kind. Judy was also proud of her MAC trips, to and from Vietnam, assisting the U.S. troops. She was forever touched by the experience. She quenched her need for speed by purchasing and driving three Porsche automobiles and earning her pilot’s license.
In 1969, she married Richard Platts, and they resided first in Atherton, CA before moving to a ranch at Priest River, ID. Judy worked the ranch and raised her two daughters in her normal 'no fear' way and enjoyed every challenge and gift life offered. Judy cherished the Priest River community and returned her affection through her service as an EMT.
Her family returned to Salina, where she continued her education at Marymount College and changed her life as a devoted member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Judy and her girls, Jennifer and Peggy, moved to Spokane in 1986. Due to her progressing Multiple Sclerosis, Judy worked only a brief time in Spokane, but was actively involved in the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
In the mid-1990’s, she moved to a home in Colville, to be closer to her daughters. Judy’s declining health eventually brought her into the care of Parkview Assisted Living and then to Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home in Colville. The care she received was excellent and the love she was offered was inspiring.
Judy lived life to its fullest without reservation or regret. She had a wonderful and yet sometimes brash sense of humor. She inspired joy with her perfectly infectious laughter and smiles. Judy touched countless lives because she held nothing back when meeting a friend for the first time. She never met a stranger. Her greatest joy was her family and her greatest gift was her presence.
Judy was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara Brann Dodge; stepmother, Jerenne Mellinger Dodge; brother-in-laws, Dell Barbour and Billy Csikos, and her nephew, Marc McCabe.
She is survived by her daughters, Jennifer Hall and her husband, David, Kettle Falls; Peggy Lewis and her husband, Justin, Colville; her father, Allen Dodge, Salina; sisters, Joanne Robinson and husband, Gary, Scottsdale, AZ; Susan Dodge Csikos, Denver; brother, Clifton Dodge and wife, Cathy, Salina; step-sister, Gwyn Mellinger Auchard and husband, Mike, Lawrence, KS; step-brother, Richard Mellinger, Overland Park, KS; six grandchildren, Chelsie, Alexys, Casey, Makayla, Tristen, Katelynn and Bridger, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mrs. Judy Platts was held July 26 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eric Ohrtman officiating.
Cremation followed the funeral service at the Danekas Crematory.
Memorial contributions may be given to the M.S. Society.
Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is entrusted with the arrangements.
