Harley Hopkins
Wednesday, 16 September 2009
Chewelah lost one of its greatest sports fans in the passing of Harley W. Hopkins, 79, of Addy on Sept. 7, 2009. Proud of his pioneer heritage, Harley was born Feb. 22, 1930 in Summit Valley in a house which was built by his Grandma Colburn after she homesteaded the land. His parents, Juanita Colburn and Harland (Pete) Hopkins, were also lifetime area residents.
Harley attended Summit Valley School and graduated from Jenkins High School and Washington State College (now WSU), where he was a 'Founding Father' and charter member of WSU’s Farmhouse Fraternity. He was very active in a number of organizations during his lifetime. Elected State 4-H President in 1949, he also belonged to the Washington Cattleman’s Association, the Stevens County Livestock Association, was a member of the Chewelah Junior Chamber of Commerce, a 4-H leader, and a school board member at Summit Valley. For many years he coached Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball, VFW softball and basketball, and organized and directed a 16-team basketball tournament for eighth and ninth graders.
Harley married Mary Coffman in 1964, and the couple has enjoyed life together for the past 45 years - true partners in life as they farmed, coached, attended a multitude of sporting events, worked and played together on their farm and enjoyed their three children. Besides sports, Harley had a particular interest in history and geology, especially in this area.
Survivors include his wife Mary, at the home; children, Melinda Burgess (Ben), Mark Hopkins (Tammy), and Melanie Bailey (Clay), all of Addy; grandchildren, Alysia and Hailey Burgess, Mikaela, Morgan, and Robert Hopkins, and Myah Bailey; his Aunt, Clara Hathaway, El Cajon, CA; several cousins, nieces and nephews; and a host of young people that he has coached and encouraged throughout the years. They will all miss this gentle, loving and caring man.

The funeral and celebration of Harley’s life was held Sept. 12, 2009 at the Summit Valley Church in Addy.
The Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Colville, WA is entrusted with arrangements.

Ralph A. Vosen
Tuesday, 24 November 2009
Ralph Alexander Vosen passed away Nov 6, 2009 at the Good Samaritan Society care facility in Spokane Valley. Cause of death was pneumonia and complications related to dementia.
Ralph was born Nov. 22, 1917 in Box Elder, MT. He was the youngest of five children born to Conrad and Louise (Lucy) Vosen. Ralph spent his childhood on the family farm near Kremlin, MT. He attended a one-room schoolhouse and graduated from the eighth grade there. After completing school, he worked for several farmers around the Kremlin-Havre area, and then worked for the Great Northern Railroad on their track crew.
Ralph was drafted in 1942 into the Army/Air Corp and during the early part of World War II was stationed at White Sands Air Base, Alamogordo, New Mexico serving as an MP guarding the airplanes. Then he was transferred to Europe. While he was enroute on a troop ship, the war was declared over and his company was then assigned to help with the mop-up operations in Germany.
While in Germany, Ralph camped with his unit in the Black Forest in the dead of winter, and was assigned as a jeep driver for officers and also drove supply trucks. One of his duties was picking up bread at a local bakery for the troops to distribute to the German people; many of them were close to starving when his company arrived in the area.
After four years of service to his country, Ralph was honorably discharged in 1946 and came home. Ralph then went to work for Sunshine Mine in Kellogg, Idaho. After a short stint as an underground miner, Ralph worked topside in the zinc plant operated by Bunker Hill.
While in Kellogg, Ralph met the love of his life, Christine Clayton. After a whirlwind three-month courtship they were married on May 31, 1947 and honeymooned at Lake Louise and Banff, Canada. Christine had two children from a previous marriage and Ralph adopted them as his own.
In 1948, Ralph and Christine and family moved to Spokane where Ralph was employed by Kaiser Aluminum at the Trentwood Works plant, first as a laborer, and later as a crane and mill operator. Another daughter was born in 1956. After 24 years in Spokane, the family moved in 1972 to a small acreage near Four Lakes.
Ralph retired from Kaiser in 1979 after 31 years of service.
In 1985, Ralph and Christine moved to the Colville area to be closer to family. They happily resided on Williams Lake Rd for over 22 years. During their retirement years, Ralph and Christine enjoyed traveling all over the West visiting family and friends. Due to memory and health problems, Ralph and Christine moved in January 2008 to a care facility in Sandpoint, ID. Christine passed away in June 2008 due to a stroke. Ralph had just recently moved to Spokane Valley when he contracted pneumonia.
Ralph was a thoughtful man who was quiet and shy in a crowd, but could be very talkative one on one. He liked to read and discuss many different topics. In his younger years he enjoyed hiking around the Northwest while prospecting and gold panning. Ralph was a man before his time-following and believing in a healthy diet and way of living, long before it ever became mainstream thinking. At almost 92, he still had no heart problems, high blood pressure, or diabetes-the health issues that are usually associated with advanced age. He had a great sense of humor and a twinkle in his cornflower blue eyes. He was a man of honesty and integrity, who was gentle and kind, yet strong when he needed to be. He was fond of animals, especially cats. He took good care of his family, and was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend.
Ralph will be deeply missed by his son, Harold Clayton (Lynne) Vosen, Heron, MT; daughters, Phoebe Daniels, Spokane and Rosemary (Dave) Daniel of Metaline Falls; two sisters-in-law, Elinor Compton, Heron; Elsie Chapman, Harrisburg, PA; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Christine, and by his parents, brothers and sisters.
The family would like to thank the staff in the Dayspring Dementia Care Unit at Good Samaritan Society-Spokane Valley for their loving kindness and excellent care for Ralph.
Cremation services were provided by Coffelt Funeral Service of Sand Point.
A graveside memorial service is being planned for next summer in Heron.
