Frances Nussbaum

Frances M. Nussbaum, a longtime resident of Chewelah, passed away at her home in Spokane on March 9, 2009. She was born on Feb. 25, 1925 in Bend, Oregon to John and Louise Gray.
Mrs. Nussbaum moved to Chewelah as a young child. Chewelah is where she spent most of her life. She met Robert 'Bob' Nussbaum and they married
on Sept. 9, 1943 in Colville.
Mrs. Nussbaum worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital for several years and was a member of the Chewelah Rebekah Lodge.
She was preceded in death by her son, Kenneth, and by her husband, Robert.
She is survived by her daughter, Louise Gossard, Randle; sisters Alice Murphy, Seattle, and Bonnie Cresto, Easton; brothers Rolland Gray, Corvallis, OR, and Thomas Gray, Deway, AZ; three grandsons, Tracy, Kevin and Robert, and five great-grandchildren.
The family plans a get-together this summer to celebrate her life.
Inez (McClung) Waters

Inez C. (McClung) Waters passed away on March 7, 2009 in Colville at the age of 100. She was born on the family ranch at Old Inchelium, which is now under the backwater of Grand Coulee Dam. She was born the sixth of seven children to Daniel Fields and Pauline (Gillette) McClung on Nov. 10, 1908.
Inez and her family moved to Omak during the Great Depression so they could find work. She was later married
to J.W. 'Wes' Waters on Sept. 18, 1938 in the Republic Firehouse by the Justice of the Peace. They lived on Blewett Pass near Leavenworth until they bought a cattle ranch in the San Poil Valley 30 miles south of Republic. Inez and Wes later sold that ranch and bought one at Inchelium.
Inez was a member of the grange, the Cattleman’s Association and the Inchelium Fair Board. Wes died on April 29, 1984 and Inez sold the cattle and the ranch and moved to Twin Lakes. She later moved in with her adopted daughter Carlie in Colville. Inez’s great grand nephews, Monte and Bob Rusk, loved to spend every summer they could at the ranch.
The memorial service for Inez Waters will be held at a later date when the weather is better. The ash burial will be in Hall Creek cemetery in Inchelium.

Janet McGowan

Janet (Walsh) McGowan was born Feb. 13, 1950 in Yakima to Alton and Zoe Walsh. She passed away on March 7, 2009 in Richland.
Mrs. McGowan is survived by her mother, Zoe Walsh of Richland, and by her husband, Jim McGowan and son Brian McGowan, both of Colville.
She received her nursing degree at Spokane Community College in 1974. Janet loved her nursing career and worked in many health care facilities in Washington, Colorado, New Hampshire, Illinois and South Dakota. She made many good friends along the way and will be truly missed by those who knew and loved her.
A private memorial service is being planned for a later date.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests that any remembrances be sent to support breast cancer research.
MELVIN 'MEL' CARNELL BAKER

Melvin Carnell 'Mel' Baker, a longtime resident of Colville, WA passed away on February 15, 2009 in Colville, at the age of 86. He was born on Nov. 10, 1922 in Ford, WA the son of Wayne Charles and Leona (Stone) Baker.
Mel was raised in Ford, WA where he attended grade school. He then attended high school at Mary Walker High School in Springdale where he graduated in 1941. Mel moved to Spokane and furthered his education at the Spokane Trade School for two years before his induction into the U.S. Army Air Corps on Apr. 12, 1943. He served overseas during World War II in Great Britain, Northern Ireland and France as a C-47 electrician. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 30, 1945 and returned to Spokane, working as construction electrician before finding employment with the Washington Water Power in Spokane. On Aug. 19, 1950, Melvin married
Margaret 'Nan' Lenerville in Spokane, and started his family.
In 1961 Mel accepted an offer to transfer to Colville and finished his career retiring as line crew foreman in 1984. During the last few years of his career he began working on his and Nan’s dream to build their own home and by the time he retired they moved into their lake residence in Tum Tum. As their lives began to wind down, Mel and Nan decided to return to family and friends in Colville, where they lived out the remainder of his days.
Mel loved to bowl was a great and took great pride in bowling a 300 in league play. He also loved his landscaping and garden and was always the neighbor to match in lawn appearance and garden production, and could always be counted on to help others with fixing just about anything.
Mel had a fantastic work ethic and a natural leader and crews always wanted to be on his team. He was a member of the Washington Water Power Trailblazers, V.F.W. and International Brotherhood of Electric Workers.
Mel was preceded in death by his daughter, Gaylene in 1997 and brothers, Orville, Kyle, Eldon and Gordon ‘Ting’.
Mel is survived by his wife, Nan Baker, at the home; sons, Kenneth Baker and his wife, Tina of Colville, Paul Baker and his wife, Rolla, Kettle Falls, Stephen Baker and his wife, Mayte of Spokane, WA; His sisters, Edna Norris and her husband, Floyd, Springdale, Vesta Gearhart and her husband, Harold, Ford, WA; nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be held at 9:00 a.m. followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. A graveside service will follow the Mass at 3:00 p.m., at the Holy Cross cemetery in Spokane, WA. Born May 25, 1945 in Honolulu Hawaii, Mr. Wiley was a Vietnam Veteran. A 40 year Resident of the Pierre Lake area, he leaves behind many family and friends; His wife and helpmate Daphne, son Derek Wiley and daughter Alora, his brother Alan Wiley and cousin Denise Horner, all of the Pierre Lake area, Sister Valerie Bennett and brothers Brian and Charles Wiley of the greater Seattle area, also brother John Wiley of California. Daughter Juanita McCool and her children, C.J., Adam and Madison, all of Madras Oregon, son Matthew and his wife Sara of Billings Montana, and daughter Tiffany Parker and her son Chase of Lakewood, Co. His good friends Chris Herrmann, Dennis Kelley and Ed Johnson are also among those who will feel his loss.
Mr. Wiley loved playing guitar and singing the blues, reading Shakespeare, the Hawaiian Islands and was a lifelong student of the teachings of Emmanuel Swedenborg. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Edna Wiley and his nephew, Benjamin Todd. We will all miss him.
Services will be held April 18 at the Kettle River Grange at 10 a.m.

Wilma Jean (Fristad) Bradford, a resident of Ione, passed away March 29, 2009 in Colville, WA. at the age of 70. Jean was born June 12, 1938 in Veradale to William and Myrtle (Leach) Fristad.
Jeanie graduated from Riverside High School. She moved to Ione, then to Oregon, and back to Ione in the early 1980’s. Jeanie was a homemaker and a caregiver, volunteering her time driving for Catholic Charities and Rural Resources. She loved to help others and spent over 50 years as a caregiver. She also spent time teaching at Vacation Bible School.
Jeanie liked camping at South Skookum Lake and fishing at Leo Lake, with an occasional line dropped into the river at the family property. She was very craft oriented, crocheting afghan’s and creating different bead works. Jeanie was a mother to many and enjoyed every minute being with her grandchildren. Jeanie will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Jeanie was preceded in death by her parents, William and Myrtle Fristad.
She is survived by daughters, Karen Burrows of Metaline; Darla Fosnow of Metaline; brother, Ronald Fristad of Tiger; grandchildren, Zeth and Ben Burrows, Bryan and Kelsey Foredyce, Bert Okeson, Stormy and Sterling Fosnow; great-grandchildren, Peyton Mary and Natasha Lynn.
There will be a memorial service Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Ione. WA.

Larissa ‘Jane’ Wisner

Larissa 'Jane' Wisner, a 35-year resident of Colville, passed away on March 29, 2009 at the Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree, CA. Jane was born on Aug. 12, 1927 in The Dalles, OR, the daughter of Norval 'Tubby' and Larissa 'Fay' (McEachern) Cockran.
Jane was raised in The Dalles, where she attended school and graduated in 1945 from the The Dalles High School. She married
Earl Wisner on July 9, 1946 in Tacoma, while he was stationed at Ft. Lewis.
Together they resided in The Dalles before moving to Stockton, CA in 1968. While in Stockton, Jane worked for AT&T and in the real estate industry. Jane also devoted her time to raising her children, Teri and Steve. In 1974, the family moved to Colville. Jane and Earl set out on a new adventure to purchase and operate the Alpine Theatre, AutoVue Drive-In, Aspen Theatre in Chewelah and the Nu-Vu Theatre in Metaline Falls. They enjoyed their summers in Colville and their winters in 29 Palms, California.
Jane enjoyed golfing, crochet, sewing and visiting with her friends, especially over the phone and for lunch. She was especially fond of time with her family and playing with her grandchildren. She was also a collector of small 'wind-up' toys and miniatures from furniture to glass wear. Her passion one winter in Palm was to learn and make 'scrubbers'. She made them for everyone and if you didn’t have one, she would give you one because she had them everywhere in her purse, pocket or bag!
Jane was a member of the Lady Elks, Girl Scouts and the Colville Lady Elks Golf Association.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Wisner; sister Greta Dunsmor; daughter, Teri Perry; son, Steve Wisner and wife, Karen Stroisch-Wisner, all of Colville; grandchildren, Kellie Wisner-Bardwell, Christina Baxter-Perry; great grandchildren, Larrisa Baxter, Jonah and Sidney Bardwell.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 16 at the First Congregational Church in Colville.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Girl Scouts of America.

Star Lawrence passed away at her home on Sunday after a long battle with respiratory problems. She was 79-years-old. She leaves behind her two nephews, Gerald and Rick Dezsofi, a sister, Marilyn Sutton, and her great niece Katie.
Star was born and raised in Portland, OR in a very close-knit family. After marrying her husband Tommy, they spent many years working and living in Alaska as owners of a fishing vessel named Janelle. Tommy and Star moved to the Addy area in 1979 and made many friends here. Tommy’s life was tragically cut short in an accident in 1986.
Star sold Watkins products to the residents of Addy for many years and was a proud member of the Addy DOLS.
Star loved life, her family and friends, but her true devotion was to her pet s. At her request, there will be no memorial services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Human Society.

Marilyn Brooks

A funeral mass was held April 7 at Immaculate Catholic Church, Colville, with the Rev. Peter O. Amah officiating, for longtime Tri-County area resident Marilyn M. Brooks, 57, who died on April 1.
Born in Ione in 1951, she graduated from Selkirk High School in 1969. She later moved to Colville.
Mrs. Brooks was an accomplished artist who enjoyed making jewelry. She was a member of the Dakota Territory Arm Collection and Remington Arms Collectors associations and the Buffalo Bill Historical Society of Cody, WY.
She is survived by her husband, Dennis C. Brooks; her parents, Joe and Mary Koch; one brother, Joe Koch Jr.; two sisters, Joanne Rice and Carol Koch; and one nephew, Christopher.
Interment in Colville followed the mass with Lauer Funeral Home, Deer Park, in charge of arrangements.
