DILLON JOHN SIMPSON
April 8, 1992 - January 23, 2010
Dillon John Simpson, a resident of Spokane, WA passed away suddenly on Jan. 23, 2010 due to injuries received in a car accident. Dillon was born on April 8, 1992 in Chewelah, WA the son of Lonnie and DeAnn (Seymour) Simpson.
Dillon began his youth in Inchelium, WA where he attended grade school and junior high school. His love for athletics started at an early age with Mat Rat Wrestling. He excelled in wrestling between the age of six and ten. Dillon had achieved a career record of 75 wins to 4 losses. Dillon later attended Medicine Wheel Academy as a freshman and Mt. Spokane for his sophomore year. It was then at Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane he was attending his junior and senior year. Dillon’s natural athletic ability gave him the opportunity to play varsity basketball his junior year and varsity football during both his junior and senior year at Lewis and Clark. He was looking forward to greater sporting opportunities with hopes of playing college football.
Dillon’s natural athletic ability carried into his love of summer water sports. He enjoyed water skiing, wake boarding, knee boarding and any other water related activities on South and North Twin Lakes. Described by his mother and father as amazing and gentle, Dillon will live on in the hearts of those who knew him best as a young man with a compassionate heart and free spirit.
Dillon is survived by his parents, Lonnie and DeAnn Simpson, brother, Jacolby Simpson and his wife, Tanna; sisters, Jazminn Simpson, Lisa Seymour, Cloey Simpson, AnnMarie Simpson; brother, Lonnie Simpson Jr.; niece and nephews, Kristyn, Matthew and Ethan Simpson all of Spokane, WA and the love of his life, Leah Foster of Inchelium, WA.

Norman Elliott Reynolds
June 16, 1920 - January 23, 2010
Norman E. Reynolds, a 28 year resident of the Kettle Falls and Colville, WA area, passed away on January 23, 2010 in Colville at the age of 89. Norm was born on June 16, 1920 in Milford, UT the son of Jess and Erma J. Reynolds.
Norm was raised in Chicago, Illinois where he attended grade school and entered high school. Norm graduated in Aurora, IL, in 1938. He then traveled the country with his older brother Sonny for three years and in 1941 enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp. During his first year in the Marine Corp, Norm met Emma Julia Flinn and they were soon wed on February 8, 1942 in Yuma, AZ. Norm was later deployed overseas during World War II, serving in Guadalcanal, Bougainville, Bismarck Archipelago and the Philippines Islands. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945 and then re-enlisted to continue serving his country overseas in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Upon his second honorable discharge in January of 1952, Norm returned to California. He served as a Communication Technician in the military and carried these skills into application after the service. Norm attended a trade school to attain the proper certification and worked in San Diego, CA. He then took a job with the California Division of Forestry and relocated his family to Grass Valley, CA. This job required a brief relocation to Redding, CA, and then returned to Grass Valley. Norman retired in 1982 and moved with Emma to Kettle Falls, WA. While in Kettle Falls, Norm dedicated himself to helping the neighbors, gardening and watching his grandchildren. Emma preceded him in death on March 30, 2007. Norm moved in with his daughter, Kim and her family and has enjoyed his time close to family and grandchildren.
He has always been dedicated to the service of others, from his involvement with the fire crews and Sheriff’s office to his service of the Seventh Day Adventist faith, church and community. He has spent countless hours preparing, repairing and maintaining communication services on mountain repeaters, firebases and with law enforcement operations. In 1960, Norm was the Communications Technician for the VIII Olympic Winter Games, ensuring proper communication throughout all law enforcement divisions. Following his service as a U.S. Marine in Korea, Norm was awarded the Korea Service Medal for his dedication to this country. Norman enjoyed spending his time with his family on their many camping and boating trips. He also enjoyed hunting and spending time outdoors. Norm was a man of clear character with little room for compromise. He maintained high standards for himself and his family. He will be remembered for instilling in his family, strong values and service to others. He will be long remembered as a pillar of strength for his family.
Norm was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Reynolds; two brothers, Walter 'Sonny' and Bill Reynolds, a baby sister and one grandson; Brahm Reynolds.
He is survived by his three sons, Norman Reynolds and wife, Nancy of Courtney, B.C., Daryl Reynolds and wife, Susie of Longview, TX and Kentyn Reynolds of Sebastopol, CA; his daughter, Kim Holling and husband Karl of Colville, WA; thirteen grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and 11 foster children.
A graveside service and vault interment for Mr. Norman Reynolds will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Mountain View Park cemetery in Colville, WA. Pastor Tim Goble will officiate the service. There will be a viewing on Wednesday afternoon, January 27th and Thursday morning, January 28th at the Danekas Funeral Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Spokane Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is entrusted with the arrangements.

Vivia Alfhild Brooks
December 12, 1913 - January 22, 2010
Vivia Alfhild (Belfrage) Brooks, 96, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2010 in Colville, Washington. She was born on December 12, 1913 to Albin and Charlotte (Seagrave) Belfrage in Bee, Washington located on McNeill Island. After the state of Washington purchased the entire island for a prison, the Belfrage family of two daughters and a son then moved to the bay area near Port Ludlow.
Vivia grew up in the Port Ludlow area, attending Chimacum Schools, graduating in 1932 as Valedictorian of her senior class. During that summer of 1932, a young man, Porter Brooks, came to work for Vivia’s father as a hired hand. They married August 14, 1932, and as newlyweds, moved to eastern Washington and took over Porter’s father’s farm. On this farm nine children were born to Porter and Vivia, and they declared those nine were the best crop the farm ever raised!
When the last child graduated, when the last school bus run was made, when all six daughters were married in the little community church, and the boys were off seeking their fortune, it was time to retire. Porter and Vivia moved to Spokane, living near Porter’s only brother and wife. Shortly after their retirement, Porter passed away. Being alone for the first time, Vivia entered nursing school at the age of 55, graduating with honors from Spokane Community College as an LPN. Viva went to work for Holy Family Hospital; she was a skilled nurse and with her kind ways and loving abilities, was loved by many. She retired from Holy Family Hospital at the age of 65. Vivia continued with her nursing, caring for elderly women in her home for several years. Only when the physical task of caring for others became too difficult, she drove ladies to their cancer appointments, and did private nursing in their homes.
In her ‘spare time’, Vivia enjoyed painting with oils, sewing quilts, and wrote several books. She loved to keep busy, and often said, 'When you are in service of the people, you are in service of the Lord.' She lived a fulfilling 96 years of servitude.
Vivia lived the past eight years at Parkview Senior Retirement and Assisted Living in Colville, Washington, enjoying each day and attending church on Sundays. Her health began to deteriorate in the past year, and she went to be with her Lord on January 22, 2010. Vivia was a wonderful Christian woman, wife, and mother and she loved her Lord.
Preceding her in death was her husband, Porter; her son, Tom; two grandsons, Tim Ross and Russ Page; a granddaughter, Ruth Dewey; two sons-in-law, Dave Ross and Velmer Dewey; and two great-great grandsons.
Surviving Vivia is her sister, Hope Craighill of Pahrump, NV; two sons, Gary Brooks and his wife Janet of St. Helens, OR; Bob Brooks and his wife Connie of St. Helens, OR; her daughters, Joy Ross of Chewelah, WA; Alma Stone and her husband Roger of Chewelah, WA; Lois Dewey of Eugene, OR; Carol Page and her husband John of Addy, WA; Fay Harms and her husband David of Yorba Linda, CA; Karen Herrick and her husband Chuck of Seattle, WA; 28 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren, and 8 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
There will be two services for Vivia, the first service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at the Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Washington. A graveside will follow at Highland cemetery. A full service for both Vivia and her son Tom will be held on April 24, 2010 at the Summit Valley Church.
The Danekas Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with arrangements.

JAMES ROBERT RHOADES
July 18, 1925 - January 19, 2010
James 'Jim' Robert Rhoades, an 18 year resident of Colville, WA passed away on January 19, 2010 in Colville at the age of 84. He was born on July 18, 1925 in Dodge City, KS the son of Ralph Robert and Ruth Rosalie (Franklin) Rhoades.
As a young boy, Jim and his family resided in several New Mexico communities as they followed work opportunities. Jim finished grade school in Topeka, KS and then continued high school in Wichita, KS. Jim entered the Army Air Corp directly out of high school and while attending Office Candidate School he met Arlene Hall. Their courtship led to a 63 year marriage which began on June 8, 1946 in Sebring, OH. Jim was honorably discharged as a Flight Officer on April 30, 1946 after serving as a B-29 bombardier in several overseas missions including Japan. Jim maintained his military friendships throughout his life. He and Arlene settled first in Wichita, KS during Jim’s enlistment in the National Guard. Jim earned his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees through Wichita State University. He would eventually complete his education with a Doctorate in Business.
Jim and Arlene and their three daughters moved extensively during Jim’s career with the Boeing Airplane Company. They resided in communities from Seattle, WA to Virginia, Michigan, New York, Canada and into Indonesia. Jim worked as a manager for Boeing and retired in 1992 after 41 years of service. He assisted in many programs including the Bomarc Missile Program. Together, he and Arlene retired to Colville, WA in 1992, where he designed and built the home of his dreams in 1995 and was an active community member.
Jim moved his family so often he nicknamed them the Gypsy Rhoades Family. He was very active in his faith community at the Colville United Methodist Church and served on community boards such as Stevens County Counseling Service and the Colville Senior Center. He enjoyed time shared with his family, travelling, and writing short stories and poetry. He preferred to lead by example and inspired his daughters always to strive for success.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene Rhoades, at the home; daughters, Ginger Rhoades and husband, Mike Bell of Colville, WA, Jamese Rhoades and husband, Don Dickey of Salem, OR, and Roberta Rhoades of Mt. Vernon, WA; a brother, Jack Rhoades and wife, Jennie of Wichita, KS; sister, Patsy Hurst and husband, Ted of Pittsburg, KS; two grandchildren, Travis and Megan Dickey. There are also numerous nieces and nephews around the country. Jim was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Bell in 2007 and an infant sister, Roberta Ann.
A memorial service for Jim Rhoades will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 13, 2010 at the Colville Community Church a United Methodist Ministry with Pastor Don Swanson officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of your choice.

DALE WILLIAM HART
November 3, 1953 - January 12, 2010
Dale Hart, 56, passed away in Chewelah, Washington on January 12, 2010. He was born in Cambridge, England on November 3, 1953 the first child of Duane and Edna (Curtis) Hart. At the age of 2, his parents moved back to the states and settled in Bremerton, Washington.
Dale attended Central Kitsap Schools, but earned his GED at the age of 17. He entered the Army in 1970, but had to take an honorable medical discharge in 1971. After leaving the Army, he traveled throughout the states with his Dad, finally returning to Bremerton. Dale was a ‘jack of all trades’ and worked many different places. He was an excellent mechanic, which at times he did for a living, but would always lend a hand to his family and friends working on their cars and trucks. There wasn’t a job he couldn’t do and there wasn’t a friend he wouldn’t help.
Dale was preceded by his parents, Duane and Edna Hart. He is survived by his siblings, Susan Hart of Bremerton, WA, David Hart of Bremerton, WA, Sherryl Hart of Chewelah, WA, Glenn Hart of Anchorage, AK and Bret Hart of Hunters, WA; his step-dad, Thomas Preston of Bremerton, WA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
There are no services scheduled at this time.

Walter Arnold Lindman
NOVEMBER 21, 1925 - JANUARY 11, 2010
Walter A. Lindman, long time Colville resident, passed away January 11, 2010. Born November 21, 1925 in Isanti, MN, Walter is survived by his wife Betty, his daughter Dana Holstine, and sons Mark and Kim. He is also survived by Vaughn Jolley, and Sue (Jolley) Smith, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Bernice Lindman preceded him to heaven in 1991.
The fifth of six siblings, Walter is survived by his older sisters Mildred Carmichael and Ardis Johnson-Svenning, and his younger brother John Lindman.
Walter grew up in Kent, WA, graduated from Kent Meridian High School in 1943, and trained in the US Army Air Corps. Following his discharge from the service at the end of WWII, he attended Washington State College (WSU) in Pullman, earning a BS in agricultural education and a Masters of Education. He married Bernice Harvey in 1946 and after her death married Betty Jolley in 1991.
He had great passion for Kiwanis International, the Boy Scouts, the Inland Empire Blood Bank, and with Bernice was very active in the Methodist church and its move from North Elm to South Elm street. Walter's faith was regularly demonstrated in practical ways, through his service and love of others and seeing every connection as a learning moment. He was respected as an outstanding educator in Newport, Cathlamet, and Colville, and as a school administrator in Springdale and Hunters. One of his favorite memories was of being chaperone to a group of students from Springdale on a trip to Europe.
Following his educational career, Walter was an electrician and business owner in Colville, and an active community member. He was always willing to lend a hand, fix a problem, or bring light to the darkest night. In later years Walter was involved with Habitat for Humanity, loved to travel with Betty, and introduced her to the joys of Kiwanis and cribbage, usually several games each day. Walter always remained a farmer at heart, growing magnificent gardens, and with Betty, tended to the trees and tree farm around their home. His farming often extended to people with the same magnificent result. He was always teaching, cultivating others and encouraging them with Christian compassion and grace.

Marjorie Elna Hale
October 23, 1910 - January 11, 2010
Marjorie E. Hale, a 11 year resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on Jan. 11, 2010 in Chewelah, WA at the age of 99. Marjorie was born on Oct. 23, 1910 in Minneapolis, MN the daughter of Gustof and Edna (Boom) Winberg.
She began her education in Wilmar and then moved with her family to Minneapolis, MN where she completed the 7th grade. Marjorie then left school to help support her family and began work as a waitress. She met a young serviceman named Lorne Barthel Hale and they were wed on Sept. 5, 1938 in Minneapolis. Marjorie and Lorne soon started a family and moved their family great distances throughout the years as they followed Lorne’s career in the military. They resided in many communities across the U.S. and internally including, Mississippi, Panama, Texas, Japan, Virginia, and Vermont. In 1966 Lorne and Marjorie moved to San Deigo, CA to be closer to their boys. Lorne passed away that year. Marjorie had worked in the home as a homemaker, a job she truly enjoyed, but as a young widow, she was forced to again find employment outside of the home. She worked as a nurse’s aide at the Doctor’s Hospital in San Diego, CA from 1966 through 1974. In 1974, she retired and moved in with her son, Lorne. She stayed in San Diego, following his relocation to the Seattle, WA area. Marjorie maintained her independence in California until her health required she again resided with her son, moving then to Washington. In 1998, her growing health concerns, caused her move into the St. Joseph’s Long Term Care facility in Chewelah, WA. She has resided there since that time, under the constant care of St. Joseph’s staff and the attention of her sons.
Marjorie was a wonderful mother, who took great pride in her children, their care, the care of their home and the love of a family. She provided constant love, direction and made sure that the needs of her family were met. She enjoyed working with her hands. She sewed the clothes for her family, crocheted, knitted and painted many ceramic creations. Marjorie led by example with high standards of which she expected others to achieve.
She was the first born of seven children. Her six siblings all preceded her in death. Marjorie is survived by her to sons: Lorne Hale and his wife, Elizabeth of Chewelah, WA, Harry Hale and his wife, Karen of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren, Matthew, Heather, Katherine, Marc and Brian Hale; nine great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Marjorie will be placed to rest with her husband at the Fort Rosecrans National cemetery in San Diego, CA. Memorial contributions may be given to any Christian missionary organization.

Gene Douglas Arlt
January 24, 1931 - January 10, 2010
Gene D. Arlt of Northport, WA and long time resident of Ritzville, WA entered into rest on January 10th, 2010, at the age of 78.
Gene was born on January 24th, 1931 to John J. and Wilma E. Arlt in Ritzville, WA. He later graduated from Ritzville High School in 1949 and from there worked as a mechanic in Ritzville until he was drafted by the U.S. Marine Corp in 1951. He served in the Korean Conflict as an aircraft mechanic, keeping the Corsair fighter planes operational. After his tour of duty he came back to Ritzville and worked as a farm hand until he was employed by Boeing Aircraft Company in Renton, WA. He worked at Boeing until taking over the family farm in Ritzville where he stayed with his wife and family for the next 30 years. After his retirement from farming Gene and his wife, Pearl, moved to their home in Northport, WA overlooking the Columbia River.
On July 23rd, 1955 he married Pearl Elizabeth Hunt from Deer Park, WA. They met at the Fireman’s Ball in Washtucna, WA. They were married three months later. On July 2nd, 1956 they had their first child Gregory Gene. On October 30th, 1958 they were blessed by a daughter, Karma Kae.
Gene was a member of the Northport American Legion where he participated in parades, the monthly meetings with his fellow veterans, and honoring fellow veterans as a member of the American Legion Honor Guard. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards with friends and family, and assisting his children, grandchildren or friends with any mechanical endeavor they might need help with. As well he really enjoyed cheering his children and grandchildren on in their sports and other activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Wilma and his wife of 52 years Pearl.
He is survived by a son, Gregg Arlt and his wife Julienne of Spokane Valley, WA; a daughter, Karma Goodwin and her husband James Goodwin of Northport, WA; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 1:00 PM Saturday, February 6th, 2010 at the Berean Bible Church in Spokane Valley, WA. Gene wished that any memorial contributions be made to Northport Community Health Center, PO Box 178, Northport, WA 99157 or Project 56, 219 W. Main, Ritzville, WA 99169. Danekas Funeral Chapel & Crematory have been entrusted with the arrangements.

William Wright
October 14, 1950 - January 9, 2010
William ‘Bill’ Wright, 59, passed away unexpectedly on January 9, 2010 in Colville, Washington. He was the oldest son of William and Delma (Harris) Wright, born October 14, 1950 in Missoula, Montana. Bill and his siblings grew up in Missoula, Montana close to their grandparents. Bill’s fondest memories were visiting and playing at his grandparent’s home.
After leaving Montana, Bill and his brothers formed a band and often played in the towns throughout Eastern Washington. It was during his stay in Colville in 1979 that he met his soul mate, Nena Dotts. Early in their relationship, it became apparent to all their family and friends that they were a perfect match. Bill and Nena married August 3, 1980. He and his brothers played at numerous benefits and fundraisers. Bill was a generous man and would never turn down a chance to help out someone else. He was also a wonderful artist, and put his talents to use in t-shirt designs, signs, and many drawings.
In 1996 Bill and Nena established the Arden Acre’s Miniature Horse Farm. This is where they raised their children and enjoyed their grandchildren. Bill had a never ending passion for his love of music, his dogs and horses, but most importantly, his wife and family. Bill’s family was blessed with his lifetime as a performer and songwriter. His love and friendship enlightened everyone he knew. Bill’s CD, Potlicker, can be found at the Flourmill, House of Music, the Colville Animal Hospital, and Meyers Falls Market.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Nena, at the home; a son, Josh Jensen and his wife Shana of Kettle Falls, WA, two daughters, Vernita Emfinger and her husband, William of Pleasant Valley, WA, and Laura Wright and her fiance’ Thomas Graham of Colville, WA; his parents, Dee Bayley and William ‘Chuck’ Wright; two sisters, Lora Cree of Maple Valley, WA and Judith Allenton and her husband Wayne of Olympia, WA; two brothers, Gary Wright and his wife Catherine of Mt. Vernon, WA and Bennie Wright of Clinton, MT; 7 grandchildren and 13 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations to cover the unexpected expenses would be appreciated by the family. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 14, Kettle Falls, WA 99141. A Memorial Service will be planned later in May.

Jack Midkiff
February 7, 1928 - January 9, 2010
Jack L. Midkiff passed away peacefully on January 9, 2010, at his home in Colville. Born February 7, 1928, in Caldwell, Idaho, he came to Washington state at the age of eight with his parents, Jesse Lee and Ethel Midkiff, and siblings to settle in the Northport area. Jack attended school at Flat Creek, Northport and Sheep Creek schools where he met Nadine Murphy, his future wife, when they were 7 and 8 years old. Sweethearts through their young years, they were married June 4th, 1947 and began their married life in Northport. In December, 1949, a daughter, Carol, was born and the following October, 1950 a son, Tom, was born. During this time Jack ran the ferry across the Columbia River near Northport while the new bridge was being built. Jack went to work at Palm Lumber Company after the bridge was completed. During the spring of 1954 another daughter, Barb, was born. Jack worked in Palm’s mill for 18 years and spent his last working years at Ron Sauvola’s mill in Northport. The family lived on Deep Creek for 32 years. Jack was forced into an early retirement due to his severe rheumatoid arthritis. A few years after his children left home, Jack and Nadine moved to Colville to be closer to doctors and medical care.
Jack is survived by Nadine, his wife of 62 years; his children Carol Midkiff of Colville, Tom Midkiff and wife Linda of Colville, Barb Midkiff Hawpe and husband Don of Ione; six grandchildren: Laurie Crandall and husband Shawn of Spokane; Chad Buffan and wife Cyndi of Colville; Brian Midkiff and wife Robin of Pulaski, VA; Jason Midkiff and fiancé Jaclyn Hall of Portland, OR; Kelly Cleveland and husband Corey of Colville; Justin Gorden of Colville; and 14 great grandchildren.
