Newell Louis Burya
January 1, 1940 - January 30, 2009
Newell Louis Burya (#9) left us on January 30, 2009 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer leading to other complications for the last 7 years. He was a 12 year graduate of Jenkins High School. After graduation he went to Anchorage, Alaska where he worked for the BLM as a smokejumper having made 49 jumps. He was also a fire boss on many of the fires he worked on. He worked summers for the BLM in Alaska from 1958-1964 and coming home to work for Larry Richmond hooking logs on the river until he returned back the Alaska in the spring. On November 12, 1965 he married
Janice Flyckt and they were married
for 43 years. He started driving log truck and continued doing that until his health kept him from doing anymore. He worked for several companies until Brian and Brett started their own business, Burya Logging and Trucking, and he spent his last few years working for them. Newell was more less a workaholic as he always had several projects on the side such as doing cedar selvedge when the kids were younger and they sold shake bolts and fence posts. Newell’s dream was to have his own sawmill, so a few years ago he found a used one and bought it and set it up and did some cutting of lumber for sale or just for his own use. His boys were able to use some of the lumber to help build their own houses. He enjoyed the outdoors and was always busy doing something, so it was hard for him to have to give up doing all the things he enjoyed doing. He was still able to take his 2 grandchildren fishing, or take them to visit Grandma Doyl or just be a wonderful grandfather to them. Newell was a wonderful father to his boys and taught them a very strong work ethic.
Newell was preceded in death by his father Louie Burya, step-dad Stanley Doyl, Grandma Blanche Johnston, many other family members and friends.
He is survived by his wife Janice, 2 sons Brian (Tiffanie) and Brett (Cortney), and 2 precious grandchildren Blake 7 and Payton 5, 3sisters Joy (Bob) Gardner, Sharon (Barry) Husfloen and Sally (Ben) Paramore. He had many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members and a host of friends.
