Kenneth Swiger
Kenneth Elwood Swiger, 94, a longtime cattle rancher from Ford, passed away on Oct. 28, 2006.
He is the loving father of Jim Swiger of Davenport; Tom Swiger of Clayton: Bill Swiger of Ford; and Betty Cantrell of Spokane.
There are numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren nieces, and nephews.
Born on Jan. 30, 1912, in Bend, Oregon, Kenneth was employed at Hanford Nuclear Reservation during its construction.
His wife, Elizabeth Swiger, passed away in November, 1984.
Graveside funeral service for Mr. Swiger was held Nov. 4 at the Pleasant View cemetery at Ford.
Whitey Shaffer
Claude C. 'Whitey' Shaffer a lifetime resident of Inchelium passed away Nov. 1, 2006 in Colville.
He was born Jan. 5, 1923 in Inchelium the son of Clarence and Alice (Judd) Shaffer.
A Rosary for Claude C. Shaffer was held Nov. 5, followed by a Funeral Mass, Nov. 6 at St. Michael’s Mission in Inchelium.
Father Bob Jones was celebrant.
Cremation followed.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Union Gospel Mission.

Claude attended school in Inchelium and graduated from the Inchelium High School in 1941.
He then entered the U.S. Navy and served in the European theater, Pacific Theater and at Normandy on D-Day.
In 1945 Claude was honorably discharged and returned to Inchelium.
He married
Dolores M. Zaugg on Aug. 27, 1949 and worked for Boise Cascade as a log cutter into the late 1970’s and then continued to farm and raise cattle.
He sold the last of his cattle in 2002 because of his impending battle with Alzheimer’s.
Since 2004 he had resided in Colville in the care of Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home.
Claude enjoyed golfing, horse racing, playing cards, socializing and spending time with family.
He was actively involved with his children and their activities, including Little League, 4-H and as a spectator of any and all sporting events.
He spent as much time as possible in the outdoors.
He was a hard worker, fearless and confident, with a great sense of independence and pride.
Claude in survived by his: wife of 57 years, Dolores Shaffer, Inchelium; his sons, Danny Shaffer and his wife, Laurie, Los Angeles; Ron Shafer and his wife, Becki, Inchelium; his daughters, Karen Shaffer, Inchelium; Teresa Shaffer and Lorraine Colosimo, Inchelium; Christine Shaffer and her husband, Bob Louie, Inchelium; his sisters, Evelyn Maly and her husband, Larry, Spokane; Edna Gardner, Colville; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bertie Martin
Bertie Lou Martin passed away at her Colville home on February 14, 2007 at the age of 73.
Bertie was born August 22, 1933 in Mountain Grove, MO.
She was the daughter of Arvil and Della (Adams) Tayloe.
Bertie had three brothers, Rueben, Jack and Arvil, Jr. and two sisters, Bessie and Beulah, and her family moved to Colville when Bertie was three years old.
She graduated from Colville High School in 1951.
On May 27, 1951 she married
the love of her life, John Martin, Jr.
Bertie worked as a bookkeeper for Barman’s Department Store for several years, then six years as a receptionist for Doctors Canning, Lowell and Minzell.
She later worked at Skelley’s Hardware as a bookkeeper, followed by doing books for Malcolm Friedman at Woody’s Restaurant and Excell and Super One Foods until she retired at the age of 62.
Bertie was an avid stock car and snowmobile racer at the local tracks, winning several trophies.
She enjoyed snowmobiling to the top of Old Dominion, hunting mushrooms and picking huckleberries.
She enjoyed quilting, following the family tree on the new computer during the last several years, gardening and flowers.
Bertie was an active blood donor and volunteer with the blood bank.
She cherished time with her family and attending all of her grandchildren’s school functions.
Bertie is survived by her husband, John Martin, Colville; her two sons, Randy Martin and wife, Patty, Ione and Craig Martin, Kettle Falls; her daughter, Collette Vally and husband, Dave, Colville; her stepson, Barry Martin and wife, Beth, Aurora, OR; her sister, Bessie Drey, Smithers, B.C.; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will he held at 1 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2007 at the Colville United Methodist Church.

Ethel Daugherty
Ethel Mary Daugherty, a 17-year resident of Colville, passed away on February 16, 2007 in Colville at the age of 86.
Ethel was born in Peoria, IL on July 1, 1920, the daughter of Thornton and Florence (Stansbury) McGrew.
Ethel was raised in Peoria where she graduated from Peoria High School.
Ethel then attended secretarial school before working at a local furniture company.
On April 16, 1945, she married
Daniel J. Daugherty in Fort Benning, GA.
Ethel moved frequently with Daniel due to his work in the military.
They resided for a time at Fort Richie, Maryland, and then in Hawaii where she worked as a secretary to the head nurse at the Schofield Barracks Army Hospital.
They then returned to Peoria. Ethel and Daniel had begun their family and Ethel chose to work in the home while her children were young.
They continued to travel with Daniel’s work as an electrical engineer from Champaign, IL to Long Beach, CA, Washington, D.C. and Bellbrook, OH.
In 1965, they settled in Kirkland, WA.
While in Kirkland, Ethel began working as a nurse’s aid at the Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
Ethel and Daniel later returned to California for a time, residing in the town of Bishop.
In 1982, they moved to Colville, where they have resided for the last 17 years.
Ethel loved to travel, hike, camp, and she was especially fond of her time gardening and bird watching.
She volunteered at the Northeast Washington Fair and exhibited for many years with her quilting, garden vegetables and jelly.
Ethel was also a pet lover.
She had a had a great zest for life, which always complimented her wonderful independent nature.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel Daugherty, at the home; her son, John Daugherty and his wife, Stephanie, San Jose, CA; her daughter, Anne Ott and her husband, Merrill, Addy; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and her beloved cocker spaniel, Sandy.
Ethel requested that no services be held.
Memorial contributions may be given to Mount Carmel Hospital.

Joseph J. Pash
Rev. Joseph J. Pash, a priest of the Diocese of Spokane for over 57 years, died in February 15, 2007.
He was born Sept. 3, 1918 in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
Ordained a priest on May 6, 1948, Father Pash came to the Diocese of Spokane the same year and served initially as assistant pastor at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes and a teacher at Maycliff High School.
He later served as pastor of parishes in Dayton and Waitsburg; Ritzville, Lind and Washtucna; Harrington and Odessa.
He was pastor at the Immaculate Conception Church in Colville for 10 years, starting in the late 1960s.
He was also pastor at Our Lady of Fatima in Spokane.
His last assignment was as pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Spokane.
Upon his retirement in 1988 he was named Pastor Emeritus of St. Augustine.
He celebrated his Silver Jubilee in the priesthood in 1973 and his Golden Jubilee in 1998.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother and sister.
He is survived by two nephews in Massachusetts.
A vigil service was held on Monday, Feb. 19, 2007 at 7 p.m. at St. Augustine Church.
The funeral mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 20 at St. Augustine Church.
The most Rev. William Skylstad, Bishop of Spokane, presided.
Internment at was at holy Cross cemetery.
Memorials may be sent to the Fund for Retired Priest at the Spokane Catholic Foundation.
Thorma Major
Thorma G. Major passed away Feb. 14, 2007 in Chewelah at the age of 84.
Thorma was born on Oct. 17, 1922 in Cedonia.
She was the daughter of Thomas and Rovilla (Brown) Major.
Thorma spent her early years in the Cedonia area, attending Hunters Elementary School.
Her family moved to Harrington where she graduated from high school.
She then attended the University of Washington for two years and later worked in Spokane for about two years.
Thorma then moved to Las Vegas, NV.
She worked at the Clark County Courthouse and retired in the middle 1970’s as Assistant Constable.
After her retirement, Thorma returned to Chewelah, where she resided until her death.
Thorma was very active in the Stevens County Democratic Party and was also a longtime volunteer at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was a member of the Colville Eagles and Chewelah American Legion Auxiliaries.
She enjoyed reading and sharing books with her friends.
Thorma is survived by one brother, John C. 'Bub' Major and his wife, Peggy, Chewelah; a sister-in-law, Pearl Major, Clayton; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her brother, Loren S. Major, four sisters, Athela Major, Rovilla Keast, Sue Emel and Cora Rae Meyer, preceded her in death.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 23 at the St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church, Chewelah.
Graveside services will follow at the Cedonia cemetery.
