Burke, Joan
Joan M. Burke died on Nov. 20, 2007.
She was 72.
She was was born on Aug. 15, 1935, to Bennie and Eileen Buell in St. Paul, Minn.
After the war years the family relocated to Spokane, where she married
Robert L. Ball.
She was a successful business woman, who ran her own company in Spokane. At the age of 56, she pursued a life long dream of teaching. After graduating in 1985 from The Evergreen College, she taught at Chief Leschi High School in Tacoma for more than 14 years.
She loved to travel, whether it was exploring Mexico, hiking in Greece, or cruising the waters of Alaska with her sister Dianne.
She is survived by daughter Susan K. Irmer and son Jeff L. Salokar; sisters Jerrie (and husband Jim) Clark, Dianne Mulroy, Kathryn Olson; brother Terry Garza; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by Robert L. Salokar, grandsons Joshua and Gabriel Salokar, and sister Karen Hawks.
At the family’s request, no services will be held.

Boyd, Haley
Haley Lynne Boyd, of Port Orchard, died on Nov. 19 in Port Orchard.
She was 18.
She was born on May 27, 1989 to N. Denny Boyd-Poindexter and Ray E. Boyd on May 27, 1989 in Norwich, New York.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 2007 and was a student at Olympic Community College in Bremerton. She worked at Spiro’s in Port Orchard on Mile Hill and Third Dimension.
She is survived by her parents; stepfather Doug Boyd; brother Andrew Boyd; and grandparents Ed and Nancy Durfee and Beverly and Gilbert Boyd.
Remembrances may be sent to Jason Watson, who will be taking her ashes to New Zealand.
A gathering to celebrate her life was held at Spiro’s Restaurant on Mile Hill Drive in Port Orchard on Nov. 24 at 1 p.m.
Steichen, Dolores
Dolores May Steichen, a lifelong Port Orchard resident, died on Nov. 15, 2007, in her daughter’s Beaverton, Ore., home.
She was 80.
She was born on April 29, 1927, in Tacoma, and grew up near Kapowsin.
She graduated from Kapowsin High from the Hargrave School of Art.
She married
Mark Steichen on Aug. 24, 1947, and they lived in Port Orchard for their entire 56-year marriage.
She worked as school secretary at Cedar Heights Middle School for more than a decade. She painted artistically throughout her adult life, served as president of the South Kitsap Artists and the Sidney Museum and Art Association, and served on boards for Port Orchard area parks and Kitsap Transit.
After her husband died in 2003, she moved into a memory care home in Tacoma and later in Beaverton, Ore.
She is survived by her daughter Karin Graves; son Tim Steichen of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren.
A memorial and graveside service will be 11 a.m. on Nov. 24, at Haven of Rest on Highway 16 West, Gig Harbor. A reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at the Point Defiance Lodge in Point Defiance Park, 5400 N. Pearl in Tacoma, .

Lemon, Alvina Thursday, 15 Nov 2007
Alvina Lemon died on on Nov. 15 at Willow Creek Adult Home.
She was 86.
She was born June 24, 1921, in Richwood, Minn., to Knute and Esther (Leegard) Solum.
She married
Charles Lemon on July 18, 1940, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., where they lived in the area until 1952.
She was a homemaker and enjoyed extending love and care to all that entered her life.
She was a Christian.
She is survived by sons Wilbur (and wife Diane) Lemon and Ervin Lemon; daughters Lois Lemon and Linda Lemon; brother Arnold Solum; sister, Blanchet England; and 28 grand-children, 32 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, in 2004; son James; and by two brothers, two sisters and four grandchildren.
Remembrances can be made
to donor’s choice. A funeral service was held at Miller-Woodlawn cemetery on Nov. 21.
Gardner, Dennis Monday, 12 Nov 2007
Dennis Willard Gardner, of Port Orchard, died in Bremerton on Nov. 12, 2007.
He was 60.
He was born on Dec. 28, 1946, in Seattle to Willard and Ruth Ann (Woodard) Gardner.
He graduated from Ballard High in 1964 and from the University of Guam in 1977.
He married
Juanita O. Young on Aug. 7, 1982, in Richmond, Calif.
He worked as a software designer and database administrator for Amazon.com.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1979 as a DS1 and received many awards, including the Purple Heart.
He enjoyed boating and antique cars.
He is survived by wife Juanita Gardner; mother Ruth Ann Gardner of Mukilteo; sons Darin (and wife Lesa) Gardner and Phillip Gardner, both of Bonney Lake, Damian Gardner of Bainbridge Island, and Jeremy Kerr of Port Orchard; daughter Melissa (and husband James) Kerr McCullough of Port Orchard; brother Dan (and wife Sandy) Gardner of Mukilteo; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Nov. 19 at Rill Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.
Perkins, Jeanette Thursday, 30 Aug 2007
Jeanette Martin Perkins died at Life Care Center of Port Orchard on Aug. 30, 2007.
She was 77.
She was born on March 14, 1930, to Carroll and Jennie (Little) Martin in Harrison, Maine, where she grew up and graduated from local schools.
She married
Thomas M. Perkins in 1951 and they lived in various parts of the country while he served in the U.S. Navy, finally settling in Port Orchard in 1975 upon his retirement.
She is survived by her husband Thomas; daughters Rebecca O’Donnell of Folsom, Calif., and Marjory Bryce of Deering, N.H.; sisters Helen Trumble of Sanford, Maine, and Verna Smith of Hudson, N.H.; brother Edward Martin of Harrison, Maine; and two grandchildren.
She was an accomplished seamstress and gardener, enjoyed golf and bowling, and was very fond of flowers.
A private interment is planned for a later date in Maine.
Sampson, Raymond Wednesday, 29 Aug 2007
Raymond D. Sampson, of Port Orchard, died on Aug. 29, 2007, in Tacoma.
He was 69.
He was born on Nov. 16, 1937, in Yakima to Roland and Helen (Smith) Sampson.
He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1956 and married
Peggy Young on Jan. 13, 1963, in Port Orchard.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in non-destructive testing until 1969.
He also worked as parts man and outside salesman for Commercial Brake and Williams Oil Filter Service; he was manager of RE Auto Electric in Bremerton and parts manager for local public transportation.
He was a member of the Saints Car Club of Port Orchard and enjoyed working on older cars, including his 1967 Ford Galaxy and 1969 Ford Torino.
He is survived by wife Peggy Sampson; sons Shane and Dino Sampson; brothers Jay Sampson of Port Orchard and Seth Sampson of Seattle; sisters Carol (and husband Tom) Hiett of Alabama, Gail (and husband Fred) Coleman of Port Orchard and Ruth (Dulane) Roppe of Ohio; and two grandchildren.
A celebration of life ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 18 at 2 p.m. at Rill Life Tribute Center.
Samuelson, Laurette Wednesday, 29 Aug 2007
Laurette Samuelson, of Port Orchard, died on Aug. 29, 2007.
The daughter of James and Claretta Taylor, she was married
to Bert Samuelson and mother to twin boys, Douglas and Steven Samuelson.
She resided in Port Orchard with her family for more than 60 years after moving here from LaCross, Wisc.
A memorial service will be held at Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard on Sept. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m.
Barcalow, Donna Tuesday, 28 Aug 2007
Donna Lou Barcalow, of Port Orchard, died on Aug. 28, 2007 in Bremerton.
She was 79.
She was born on Nov. 2, 1927, in Casper, Wyo., to John W. and Marjorie K. (Pfeiffer) Gillespie.
She married
Warren Barcalow on Aug. 13, 1950, in Los Angeles, Calif., where she lived most of her life, moving to Port Orchard in 1990.
She graduated from UCLA and was a kindergarten teacher for 20 years in Southern California.
She was active with Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and alumni, and was involved in her Methodist church choir and women’s ministry activities.
She enjoyed church choir, reading, shopping, hand-painting shirts, knitting and crocheting afghans and baby hats for charitable organizations.
She is survived by her husband of 57 years Warren Barcalow; son Randy Barcalow of Texas; daughter Jill (and husband Dave) Fijolek of Port Orchard; and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life ceremony is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 2 p.m., at Christian Life Center in Port Orchard.
