Beglau, Ada Saturday, 09 Oct 2004
Ada Beglau, 89, a resident of Port Orchard for 46 years, died on Oct. 9, 2004.
She served as a volunteer for Senior Outreach Systems of Port Orchard for more than 10 years. She also volunteered to assist Alzheimer’s patients and enjoyed bowling with the Bowlerettes.
She is survived by daughters Lois Williams, of Bern, Ohio, and Julie Smith of California; two granddaughters, one grandson and six great-granddaughters.
Memorial services were held on Oct. 13 at Haven Rest Memorial Park; inurnment at Haven of Rest followed.

Vancil, Richard Friday, 08 Oct 2004
Richard E. Vancil, of Port Orchard, died on Nov. 3, 2004, in Seattle.
He was 83.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1920, in Danville, Ill., to Herbert and Lulu Dot (Jones) Vancil.
He married
Neoma (Frost) on May 14, 1941, in Danville, Ill.
He graduated from Danville (Ill.) High School in 1938 and apprenticed with the Chicago Eastern & Illinois Railroad.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946 as a gunner’s mate third class and as an instructor at the Naval Training Center.
He served as a sheetmetal worker at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard from 1950 to 1962 and later as credit manager at the Bremerton Sun.
He retired in 1982.
He enjoyed hunting, hiking, swimming and his grandchildren.
He was a Protestant.
He is survived by his wife Neoma Vancil, of Port Orchard; son Larry L. (and wife Sharon) Vancil, of Port Orchard; daughters Betty (and husband Don) Wells, of Orlando, Fla.; Barbara (and husband Rick) Starkel; and special daughter Christine Gidican, of Port Orchard; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Karen Schafer, two grandchildren and two brothersd and two sisters.
A memorial service was held at Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard on Oct. 8.

Smith, Ruth Friday, 01 Oct 2004
Ruth Alice Jensen Smith, 77, died on Oct. 1, 2004, in Phoenix, Ariz.
She was born on March 22, 1927, in Brigham City, Utah.
She graduated from the University of Utah with degrees in psychology and social work. She taught school, was a high school counselor and served a mission for her church in Mobile, Ala.
She lived in Port Orchard for 14 years.
She is survived by her husband, J. Harold Smith, of Phoenix; 12 children and 62 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Oct. 7.
Bloomquist, Selma Thursday, 30 Sep 2004
Selma “Sally” Bloomquist, of Port Orchard, died on Sept. 30, 2004, at Ridgemont Terrace Care Center. She was 92.
She was born on Oct. 5, 1911, in Cathalmet to John and Helen (Antone) Doumit.
She married
Ernest W. Bloomquist on Sept. 21, 1940, in Cathalmet. He preceded her in death in 1995.
She graduated from Wahkiakum High School in Cathalmet and later attended St. Vincent School of Nursing in Portland, Ore. She graduated from the University of Oregon School of Nursing in 1938.
She worked as a registered nurse in Cathalmet and taught nursing at St. Vincent School of Nursing.
She was a member of the Port Orchard Yacht Club, the St. Vincent Alumni Association, a charter member of the Jenny L. Miller Guild of Children’s Hospital, and was an avid bridge player.
She is survived by son Will (and wife Dayna) Bloomquist of Port Orchard; daughters Kathy (and husband Pete) Holt of Port Orchard and Susan (and husband Ralph) Miller of Port Orchard; sisters Marian Peterson of Seaside, Ore., Leona Boyer of Cathalmet and Helen Wampler of Fresno, Calif; grandchildren Melany Bloomquist Chobot, Karla Bloomquist Simpson, Joe and Willie Bloomquist, Tom, Kirk and Dan Holt, and Eric, David and Bryan Miller; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 8 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Port Orchard, with inurnment to follow at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.

Manz, Arthur Wednesday, 29 Sep 2004
Arthur A. Manz, of Port Orchard, died on Sept. 29, 2004, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
He was 60.
He was born on Feb. 7, 1944, in Sheboygan, Mich., to Clarence B. and Monica (Lulloff) Manz.
He married
Elaine Wachlin on Oct. 1, 1988, in Port Orchard.
He graduated from Kiel (Wisc.) in 1962 and attended Bryant & Stratton College in Milwaukee, Wisc.
He served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1967 to 1988 and worked as an inspector for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms until retiring in 1995.
He enjoyed cooking, gardening, hiking and traveling. He was a Catholic.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine Manz, of Port Orchard; mother Monica Manz, of Kiel, Wisc.; sons Paul and Matthew Manz, both of Port Orchard; daughter Teresa Manz of Port Orchard; brother Brian Manz of Kiel, Wisc.; sisters Mary Ellen (and husband Don) Wiesner of Milwaukee, Wisc.; Jeanne Anne (and husband Tony) LaCrosse, of Milwaukee, Wisc., Nancy Manz of Plymouth, Wisc., and Michelle Voss of Kiel, Wisc.
A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 6, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Bremerton.

Okabe, George Sunday, 06 Jul 2003
George Okabe, 67, a resident of Port Orchard, died July 6, 2003.
He was born in Hanapepe, Kauai, Hawaii on Oct. 20, 1935, to Henry Ernest and Jean (Yasutake) Okabe. He married
Reiko (Arima) Okabe on Oct. 9, 1956 in Okinawa, Japan.
He graduated from Waimea High School in Kauai in 1954. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957 as a Sgt./E5 metal body repairman.
He was a welder at Pearl Harbor Shipyard and transferred to PSNS in 1977.
He retired in 1993 after 34 years.
He loved gardening and liked to teach his grandchildren how to drive.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Port Orchard.
He is survived by his wife Reiko Okabe; daughters Georgette Yukiko Kurashige of Honolulu, Hawaii and Katherine T. Exton of Port Orchard; brothers Wayne Okabe, James Okabe, Joe Makua, Sam Makua and Wendall Makua; sisters Patsy Okabe, Joan Okabe, Sherry Okabe, Sandra Okabe, Gail Okabe, Evelyn Okabe, Grace Okabe and Rose Okabe; and his grandchildren, Jan Matsumoto, Charles Matsumoto Jr., Chris Exton, Tiffany Exton, Jonathan Exton, Melissa Exton and Stephanie (Exton) Roberts and great-granddaughter Saraih Sachi Roberts.
Funeral service was held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Friday, July 11, 2003, at Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center followed by a graveside service at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
Miller, Mary Marjorie Saturday, 05 Jul 2003
Mary Marjorie Miller, 75, a resident of Port Orchard, died June 29, at Port Orchard Care Center.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1927, in Blythe, Ga., to Benjamin and Lula (Ward) Cadle.
She married
Shelby A. Miller in October 1968 in Tacoma.
She was a nursing home cook in various western Washington facilities for 25 years. She retired in 1992. She enjoyed doll collecting and was a Southern Baptist.
She is survived by her husband Shelby Miller; son Larry Richardson of Auburn; daughters Suzzette Bridges of Augusta, Ga., Jan Coe and husband Richard of Puyallup, Patti Lake and husband Chuck of Auburn, Tracy Burgess of East Wenachee, and Toni Miller of Port Orchard; brother Ralph Cable of Hephzibah, Ga.; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a private family service. Interment will be at Washington Memorial Park in Seattle. Arrangements were made by Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center.
Hibbard, Lloyd Friday, 04 Jul 2003
Lloyd “Barney” Hibbard, 69, a Port Orchard resident, died July 4, 2003 at home.
He was born July 8, 1933, in Portland, Ore. to Raymond and Frances Hibbard.
He is survived by his wife, Phoebe (Hays) Hibbard.
They married
Aug. 26, 1955, in Bremerton.
He graduated from Bremerton High School and later attended Olympic College.
He worked at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Electronics Shop No. 61 until 1993.
He enjoyed water and snow skiing, hiking and playing chess, loved to canoe and enjoyed spending time with his family.
He is survived by his daughters Deairea Kelly of Port Orchard, Julie Anspach of Wenatchee, Susan Adams of Port Orchard and Chandra Kuhnhausen of Port Orchard; his brother Ray Hibbard; also 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 5 p.m. (July 10) at Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center, followed by interment at Sunset Lane cemetery. A reception with food will follow the ceremony at Deairea Kelly’s residence.
Arrangements were handled by Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center.

Canavan, Rolland Friday, 04 Jul 2003
Rolland (Rollie) H. Canavan, 88, a resident of Bremerton, died July 4, 2003.
He was born in May 3, 1915, in Deer Harbor, Orcas Island, to Earl and Meta (Pearmain) Canavan.
He graduated from Franklin High School in 1933 and studied engineering at the Uni-versity of Washington. He retired as captain of the Seattle Fire Department in 1965 after 30 years.
Part-time retirement included 10 years as fire chief at Fort Lawton, interspersed with travel.
He loved to fish and golf and was chairman of the Muscular Dystrophy Foundation for the state of Washington for many years.
He is survived by his wife Muriel (Wallace) Canavan; stepson Dale Scott; daughters Colleen Meacham and husband Bill, Kathryn Canavan, Peggy Molsness and husband Jack; stepdaughters Dee Scott, Debora Reda and Leslie Reidy; brother Desmond Canavan; and 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard Canavan.
Arrangements were handled by Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center.
