Lois S. Mueller, 74, a Belfair resident, died Jan. 25, 2004.
She was born in Tahuyeh on Dec. 17, 1929, to William and Sara Roseanne (Silver) Schauer.
She attended South Kitsap High School. She was a homemaker and mother.
She is survived by her sons John and wife Linda Buffington of Puyallup, Allen and wife Janet Buffington of Great Falls, Mont., Kris and wife Christine Mueller of Vacaville, Calif., and Leo and wife Audra Mueller of Port Orchard; daughters Barbara Knapstad of Belfair, Connie and husband Mike Lovelace also of Belfair and Kathy Stamm of Santa Maria, Calif.; brother Elmer Schauer of Port Orchard; sister Vivian and husband Harold Buffington also of Port Orchard; and 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Allen, Frank, Wilbur, Arthur and Robert Schauer and her grandson Glenn Knapstad.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Rill Chapel. Interment was private at Ivy Green cemetery in Bremerton.

Mathews, Joe Saturday, 24 Jan 2004
Joe Mathews Sr., former Port Orchard chief of police
Joseph Leslie Mathews, Sr., 62, a resident of Allyn, died Jan. 24, 2004, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
He was born on Aug. 13, 1941, in Pueblo, Colo., to Hugh and LaMar (Behrmann) Mathews.
He married
Margery J. Reis on May 1, 1993, in Port Orchard.
He graduated from Renton High School in 1959 and from the University of Puget Sound in 1963 with a BA in political science.
He was the Port Orchard police chief from 1984 to 1999 and was a sergeant with the Tukwilla Police Department working there from 1970 to 1984.
He was a founding member and first president of the North Mason Rotary, served more than 10 years on the Strategic Advisory Board of Cencom while he was police chief, was a member of the Port Orchard Rotary, volunteered with the Peninsula Work Release Program and the Emergency Management Office, was appointed to the Mason County Civil Service Board and was also chairman, he was a member of the Lakeland Village Men’s Club, served on the Lakeland Village board and served as head of security for the organization.
He is survived by his wife Margery Mathews of Allyn; son Joseph Leslie Mathews, Jr. and wife Lisa of Seven Lakes, N.C.; daughter Kim and husband John McCarthy of Port Orchard; step daughters Ann and husband Dan Welch of Port Orchard, Shellie Algeo of Oak Harbor, and Darcy Brown of Kent; half brothers Hugh Mathews, Jr. of Adkins, Texas and Edgar Eaton of Auburn; grandchildren Kayla Mathews, Noah Mathews, Chelsea Ross, Morgan Ross, Ryan Ross, Christopher McCarthy, Kate McCarthy, Taylor Algeo, Madison Algeo, Aaron Welsh, Kevin Welsh and Michael Welsh.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and LaMar Mathews and half sister Pat (Eaton) Kennedy.
Visitation will be held at Rill Chapel on Friday, Jan. 30 from noon to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, Jan. 31, from 9 a.m. to service time. Funeral service will begin at Rill Chapel at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Powell, Glenda Thursday, 22 Jan 2004
Glenda Powell, Olympia resident
Elizabeth Glenda (Judson Boxberger) Powell, 96, a resident of Olympia, died Jan. 22 at home.
She was born Jan. 5, 1908, to Robert F. Judson, Jr. and Elizabeth Amelia (Williams) Judson.
She attended college in Pullman and later married
John Mitchell Boxberger and Roy Powell.
She worked at Bremerton Naval Hospital until her retirement. Afterward, she volunteered as a reading coach for both adults and second-grade students at Burley Glenwood Elementary School.
She traveled extensively throughout the western United States, Canada and beyond. She climbed Mount Olympus and later met author James Michener, who at that point was doing research for his novel, “Alaska.”
She is survived by her sons Robert M. Boxberger and his wife Patricia Trowbridge of Tacoma and James D. Boxberger of Mount Palomar, Calif.; her grandchildren Karen Boxberger of Seattle, Geoffrey Clark of Gig Harbor, Richard Clark of Seattle, Erika Johnson of Oak Harbor, Maureen Lazarz of Poway, Calif, Erin Miller of Shelby, Mont., Ingrid Olszewsky of Olympia and Ruth Ottlyk of Tacoma; also 12 great-grandchildren.
At the request of the deceased, there will be no funeral service. Her ashes will be scattered at a private family ceremony to be held at some later date.
Head, Mark Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004
Mark Allen Head, 33, a resident of Port Orchard, died Jan. 21, 2004, in Tacoma.
He was born on March 4, 1970, in Bremerton to Robert and Darlene Head.
He married
Marivic Head Montalbo on Dec. 22, 2001, in Batangas City, Philippines.
He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1989 at attended Olympic College in Bremerton and BTCI in Tacoma.
He worked as a laborer K-2 for five years and at Buffelon Woodworking Co. for one year.
He is survived by his wife Marivic Head; parents Bob and Darlene Head of Port Orchard; brother Jason Lee Head of Port Orchard; grandmother Charlotte Meeks; aunts and uncles Jim and Jan Bevridge, Richard Meeks, John and Loreen Steffens of Bend, Ore., and Doreen Williams of Palm Springs, Calif., Kevin Meeks of Tacoma, Chuck and Arlene Howard of Gig Harbor, Clifford and Susanna Head of Port Orchard, and Carl and Rhonda Lindberry of Port Orchard; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was held on Jan. 28, 2004, at Rill Chapel. A memorial service was held at Christian Life Center on Jan. 29, 2004.

Picha, Frank Wednesday, 21 Jan 2004
Frank Q. Picha, 69, a resident of Port Orchard, died Jan. 21, 2004.
He was born on April, 2, 1934, in Baltimore, Md., to Frank and Marie (Quinn) Picha.
He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1952 and from the University of Maryland in 1956.
He served in the U.S. Army as an SP3 (E-4) from July 1956 to June 1958. He won awards for good conduct and as a sharpshooter.
He worked for Vitro Corp. as a mechanical engineer and manager for 35 years.
He retired in 1994.
He was an amateur astronomer and enjoyed racquetball and auto racing. He was baptized Roman Catholic.
He is survived by his companion Trina Hauge of Port Orchard; son Frank Q. Picha of Pasadena, Calif.; and sister Joane Fountain of Half Moon Bay, Calif.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Rill Chapel.

Weathers, Ellen Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004
Ellen E. Weathers, 88, a Gig Harbor resident, died Jan. 20, 2004, at Allenmore Medical Center in Tacoma.
She was born on Dec. 28, 1915, in Port Orchard to Ray and Emma (Damar) Mullinex.
She married
Bruce Weathers on Feb. 4, 1940, in Port Orchard.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1936.
She was a homemaker.
She was an avid gardener and a member of the Lakeside Garden Club in California. She also had a great love for animals and was very artistic, enjoyed painting, drawing and cooking.
She is survived by her husband Bruce Weathers of Gig harbor; sons Bruce II and wife Marganne Weathers of Tacoma; daughter Marian and husband Fred Burger of Gig Harbor; twin brothers Lawrence Mullinex of Burley and Clarence Mullinex of Port Orchard; grandson Jeff and wife Erin Blaine of Buckley and great-granddaughter Lyssa Blaine.

Bowen, Ethelmae Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004
Ethelmae Bowen, 77, a resident of Belfair, died Jan. 20, 2004, at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
She was born on April 22, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., to Wilbur and Edith (Deffenbaugh) Bowen.
She graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City in 1943. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by her daughters Bobbie and husband Bob Scott of Belfair and Beverly Callaway of Glendale, Ariz.; sisters Ruth and husband Ted Ward of Port Orchard and Lucy Bowen of Las Vegas, Nev.; and grandson Shaun Scott of Pullman.
Services will be held at Belfair Community Baptist Church at 11 a.m. on Feb. 7, 2004.

Kolma, Marc Tuesday, 20 Jan 2004
Marc B. Kolma, 69, a resident of Port Orchard, died Jan. 20, 2004.
He was born on June 19, 1934, in Yakima to Joseph and Gladys (Lancaster) Kolma.
He graduated from Toppenish High School in Toppenish. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He worked as a bartender at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall in Yakima for 30 years. He retired in 1999.
He is survived by his daughters Helen Young of Napa, Calif., Vera and husband Dennis Hedrick of Port Orchard, Romona and husband Clark Dixon of Chehalis, Alice Wade of Edgewood and Cheryl and husband Dean Pick of Kelseyville, Calif.; sister Thea and husband Richard Friss of Yakima; and grandchildren Tiffany Turner, Mitchal Turner, Rodger Young, Renee Young, Chris Young and Charlee Kolma; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is pending in Yakima. Inurnment will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Kniert, Betram Wednesday, 14 Jan 2004
Bertram H. Kniert, 88, a resident of Port Orchard, died Jan. 14, 2004.
He was born on June 20, 1915, in Bellingham to Gustav and Bertha (Maves) Kniert. He married
Lorraine (Hauger) Kniert on July 29, 1943, in Sacramento, Calif.
He graduated from high school in Kirkland in 1933 at underwent PSNS Apprenticeship in 1952. He served in the U.S. Airforce from 1942 to 1945 as a sargent. He worked as a scheduler/nuclear power at PSNS for 30 years.
He retired in 1970.
He was a past president of Kitsap Mineral and Gem Society.
He is survived by his wife Lorraine Kniert of Port Orchard; sons James H. and wife Carol Kniert of Elma and Tedd M. Kniert of Owatonna, Minn.; daughter Janeen A. Kniert of Gig Harbor; brother George B. Kniert of Kirkland; sister Annabel B. Jensen of Kirkland; grandchildren Lori and husband Steve Lowrance, Jeffrey Kniert and Brian Kniert and great-grandchildren Jacob Lowrance and Blake Lowrance.
He was preceded in death by his twin sons Larry and Lamar Kniert.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. at Rill Chapel on Jan. 24. Arrangements were handled by Rill Chapel’s Life Tribute Center.
