Hinderlie, Ray
Ray Hinderlie died on Jan. 2, 2008.
He was 92.
He was born in Canby, Ore., to Ragna and Berent Severin Hinderlie in 1915, moved to a farm near Roy, Washington in 1920 and was educated at Pacific Lutheran College in Parkland.
He began teaching at the age of 20 in a two-room schoolhouse in Central Valley on the Kitsap Peninsula. His teaching career spanned 39 years — 24 years in Kitsap County and 15 years in the Highline School District.
He was the founding principal of Marcus Whitman Junior High in South Kitsap, and also headed Sylvester Junior High and was one of the last administrators at Glacier High School.
He was active in the State Principals’ Association and a member of the Port Orchard and South Central Kiwanis Clubs and the Burien Elks.
He was a lifetime member of the Musicians Union, playing saxophone, piano and banjo in dance bands for over 50 years.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene Hinderlie; daughter Arlene (and husband George) Wade of Normandy Park; sons Richard (and wife Ann) Hinderlie of Denver and Sandy (and wife Helma) Kaldewey of New Orleans and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Jan. 6 at the Judson Park Retirement Community’s Rainier Chapel, Des Moines, Washington.

Lider, Leroy
Leroy H. Lider, of Port Orchard, died on Dec. 30, 2007, at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
He was 70.
He was born on Dec. 16, 1937, to Adolph and Emma Lider in Charleston.
He attended South Kitsap schools and graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1956.
He married
his high school sweetheart, Carmen Nelson, in 1956.
He worked for the Boeing Co. for several years before moving to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard as a shipfitter. He retired after 30 years of service.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carmen Lider, of Port Orchard; and sons Steven R. Lider, Leon (and wife Terri) Lider, Charles (and wife Lori) Lider, Walter (and wife Teresia) Lider, Martin Lider and Tom (and wife Kelly) Lider; daughter LisaAnn Lider-Goetz; and 16 grandchilderen and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Jan. 3 at the St. Bede’s Episcopal Church on Lider Road.
Barr, Andrew
Andrew Barr Jr., of Port Orchard, died on Dec. 30, 2007, at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.
He was 85.
He was born on Sept. 16, 1922, in Newark, N.J., to Andrew and Margaret Cooper (Thompson) Barr.
He was a retired pilot in the U.S. Air Force and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam).
He was married
to Theresa Scanlan in Olympia in 1969.
He was a member of the Tacoma Elks, the order of the Daedalians Foundation (World War I and II Pilots Association).
In his retirement he built his own house, built wood boats, enjoyed cooking and volunteered at the Veterans Hospital in Tacoma and volunteered at the Wood Boat Museum in Tacoma also.
He is survived by his wife Theresa Barr of Port Orchard; sons Andrew M. (and wife Caroline) Barr of Phoenix, Ariz., and Douglas Barr of Wintrop; daughters Patricia (and husband David) Harris of Reno, Nev., and Lucinda Barr of Sand Point, Idaho; and 14 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Jan.5 at the Bible Presbyterian Church, 5 South G St., in Tacoma, followed by a gathering at his son-in-law’s home.

Ayres, Clara Thursday, 13 Sep 2007
Clara May Turner Ayres died in Port Orchard on Sept. 13, 2007.
She was 100.
She was born on June 28, 1907, in Manila, Philippine Islands, and graduated from the University of Washington and Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and worked for many years as a nurse.
Her hus-band’s career as a professor of mathematics and his tours in the U.S. Naval Reserve took the family to various locations around the United States.
She is survived by daughters Betty Jesch of Port Orchard and Evelyn Starr of Monterey, Calif., in addition to five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace C. Ayres, in 1975 and her son, Horace C. Ayres, Jr., in 1981.
Cummings, Timothy Thursday, 13 Sep 2007
Timothy Peter Cummings died on Sept. 13, 2007.
He was 67.
Born and raised in Pittston, Pa., he was a retired senior chief in the U.S. Navy who served four tours in Vietnam with part of that service on swift boats.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Cummings; daughters Sarah Miller and Amy Roth; son Timothy Cummings, brother John Cummings; and six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sept. 22, at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Port Orchard, with a military salute to follow.
Horn, Howard Tuesday, 11 Sep 2007
Howard L. Horn, of Port Orchard, died on Sept. 4t, 2007, at home. He was 67.
He was born on April 29, 1940, to George and Ethel (McMillan) Horn in Burley, Idaho.
He graduated from Shoshone High School in 1958 and attended Olympic College in Bremerton.
He married
Carol D. Meeks on May 24, 1975, in Suquamish.
He served 20 years in the U.S. Navy as a nuclear engineman, achieving the rank of chief petty officer and did nine tours in Vietnam, retiring in 1980.
He was active in 4-H, enjoyed woodworking, model-building, small-engine repair, farm work and enjoyed working with horses (riding and performing with them).
He is survived by his wife Carol Horn, of Port Orchard; sons Steve (and wife Liisa) Horn, John Horn and Kenneth Horn; daughter Charleen Chance; sisters Evelyn (and husband Fred) Long of Island Park, Idaho, Barbara (and husband Jack) Suesz of Lewiston, Idaho, and three grandchildren.
A graveside service is scheduled for Sept. 14 at 11 a.m. at Fraola cemetery in Port Orchard, with a celebration of life to follow at the family home.
Hatt, Craig Saturday, 08 Sep 2007
Craig Everett Hatt, of Port Orchard, died on Sept. 8, 2007.
He was 41.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1965, to Gary and Rose (McKenney) Hatt in Tacoma.
He graduated from South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard in 1984.
He worked as a processor on several fishing boats in Alaska and also worked as a handyman and did odd jobs throughout Port Orchard, Olalla and Gig Harbor.
He enjoyed camping, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his parents Gary and Rose Hatt; brother Greg Hatt of Port Orchard; and sister Carla Lewis of Bremerton.
A celebration of life service was held on Sept. 14. Burial followed at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard.
Russell, Beverly Tuesday, 04 Sep 2007
Beverly Russell Burdick, of Port Orchard, died on Sept. 4 at Harrison Medical Center.
She was 66. She was born Jan. 7, 1941, in Port Orchard to Lloyd and Helen Kingston.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1959, the IBM School in 1960 and attended Olympic College.
She married
Harold Burdick in 1984.
She was a civilian payroll tech at Naval Hospital Bremerton when she retired in 2003.
She was a member of Cross Point Church, formerly South Park Assembly of God, and the Medicine Hat Chapter of Red Hat Society.
She enjoyed helping out at church and crocheting.
She is survived by her husband Hal Burdick, mother Helen E. Ristvet; sons Stuart and Darrin Russell, foster son Brian Ogle; daughter LeiLani Stewart; brother Jim Kingston; and eight grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first spouse, Jayvanis Russell.

Wold, Clayton Monday, 03 Sep 2007
Clayton R. Wold, a Kitsap County resident for the last 40 years, died on Sept. 3, 2007.
Raised in Tacoma’s Parkland area by Carl “Cy” and Ada Wold, he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940.
He married
Erma Simpson just prior to his entering the Army Air Force, where he was based in Italy during World War II as a navigator on the B-24 Liberator, completing numerous bombing missions over Germany.
As a civilian, he worked as an auto mechanic.
He is survived by his daughter Linda Moran (and husband John) Chambers (John) of Olalla; sisters Eleanor (and husband John) Martinson of Puyallup and Lois (and husband Ken) Bortle of Parkland; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by wife Erma Wold and son Ken Wold.
A funeral service was held on Sept. 11 at Rill Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard. Burial followed at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard.
