McKay, Donald
Donald E. McKay, of Port Orchard, died at home on Jan. 17, 2008.
He was 53.
He was born on Oct. 12, 1955 in San Francisco.
He attended First Christian Chuch in Port Orchard and spent much of his life working as a volunteer. He had a love for missionary work and spent many years working alongside his family in other countries and states, serving the poor.
He is survived by wife Cathy McKay; brother Gary McKay; daughters Sara (and husband Jonathan) and Julie; sons Donny (and wife Samantha) and Aaron; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service and barbecue potluck is scheduled for First Christian Church, 4885 SW Hovde Rd, Port Orchard at 5 p.m. on Jan. 27.
Remembrances can be made to the church in his wife’s name.
Fries, Harold
Harold R. Fries, of Port Orchard, died on Jan. 15, 2008, at home.
He was 96.
He was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Walla Walla to John and Elisabeth (Buterus) Fries.
He graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1929 and married
Hazel Francis Russell on Sept. 2, 1933, also in Walla Walla.
She preceded him in death in 1996.
He worked for 35 years at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, retiring in 1972 as a Maintenance Supervisor in Shop 07.
He also worked as assistant manager at JC Penney in Walla Walla and Baker, Ore., and worked on the Coulee Dam.
He loved growing roses and vegetable gardening. He enjoyed traveling, fishing and music, and was proficient in several musical instruments.
He is survived by daughters Lei Launi Johnson of Anaheim Calif., Diane (and husband Robert) Galbraith of Bainbridge Island, and Jeannie Powers of Manchester; brothers Don (and wife Carolyn) Fries of Mead and Jerry (and wife Joan) Fries of Harrington; and five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Buell, Janet
Janet Ladine Buell (Taylor) died on Jan. 15, 2008.
She was 73.
Born in Parsons, Kansas, in 1935, she grew up in Port Orchard after moving to the area with her family at the age of 7.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1952 and worked at the Bremerton Naval Shipyard.
She married
Bob Buell on June 9, 1962.
He preceded her in death in 1981.
She is survived by daughter Kathi Church; sister Loretta Harlan; brother Vaughn Taylor; and two grandchildren.
At her request there will be no services.
She will be buried at the Los Angeles National cemetery with her husband.

Willette, Mary
Mary Rose (Renner) Willette died on Jan. 9, 2008.
She was 100.
She was born on Oct. 11, 1907.
She is survived by daughters Jacqueline of Seattle and Jan (and husband Tom) of Shoreline; sons Ron (and wife Judy) of Port Orchard and Jerry (and wife Laurie) of Edmonds; and 21 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death in 1986 by her husband of 57 years, Everett Willette; and daughter Lois and sons, Rick and Fred.
A funeral mass was celebrated on Jan. 14 at St. Benedict Catholic Church, in Seattle.
Interment followed at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Hill, Rose
Rose Marie Hill, of Seattle and formerly Port Orchard, died on Jan. 8, 2008, at home.
She was 31.
She was born in San Diego Calif., and moved to Port Orchard in 1979.
She attended Bible Baptist Church, Ced-ar Heights Junior High, and Sedgwick Junior High and graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1994, where she was very active in student government, Acting Ensemble, cheerleading and the Head Start Program at Olympic College in Bremerton.
She graduated from Wells College in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1998, and earning a master’s degree from the Museum for Fine Arts (SMFA), Boston, Mass., in 2004.
After graduation, Rose traveled the world as a performance artist from 2004 to 2006. The SMFA in Boston will award an annual Rose Hill Performance Award in honor of Rose’s contributions to performance art.
She moved back to Seattle in 2004, and began a master’s program at Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, University of California Santa Barbara, Calif.
She earned a master’s degree in counseling and clinical Psychology in May of 2007.
At various times she fished for the summer on an Alaskan fishing boat, participated in building homes for homeless in Texas, she was a sky diver, sea-plane pilot, bi-plane enthusiast, para-sailor, motorcyclist, violinist, ballerina, banjo player, singer, songwriter and author.
She is is survived by mother Ginger (and husband Michael) Kulpit of Poulsbo; father Chuck (and wife Michele) Hill of Olympia; sisters Chrystie Hill of Seattle, Trudee Hill of Seattle, Tonya (and husband David) De Loma of West Richland, and Karen (and husband Tom) of Olympia; brother Andrew Hill of Spokane WA; and paternal grandmother Ilene Lee Hill Mays of El Cajon, Calif.
A celebration of life ceremony will be held in Seattle on March 29, at a location to be announced at a later date.

Williams, James
James R Williams, of Port Orchard, died on Jan. 4, 2008.
He was 74.
He was born on June 20, 1933, in Tacoma to Orie Williams and Marie Wilson.
He attended Stadium High School in Tacoma and graduated from Julian High School in California.
He served in the U.S. Army.
He married
Pat Roberts of Centralia in 1968.
He worked for the Bell System for 33 years and retired in 1987.
He enjoyed boating, RV’ing and snowbirding.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Pat Williams; daughters Joni (and husband Bob) McCarty of Graham, and Jaci Williams of Port Orchard; sons Mark (and wife Jennifer) Williams of Belfair, and John “Mar” Williams of Bremerton; step-daughter Penne Banfield of Rhode Island; brother O.D. Williams of Browns Point; and three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Mike Williams; grandson Shane Williams; and great-granddaughter Shyla Williams.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
Powell, Edmond
Edmond Ross Powell, of Port Orchard, died on Jan. 3, 2008, at Life Care Center in Port Orchard. He was 76.
He was born in Seattle June 1, 1931 to Ross C. and Thelma Powell.
The family moved to Port Orchard in 1943, where he attended South Kitsap schools, graduating in 1949.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1953 and married
Martha Williams in Ellensburg in 1953.
He continued his education at Central Washington University, earning his teaching degree in 1957.
The couple returned to Port Orchard where Ross began his teaching career at Marcus Whitman Junior High, then to South Kitsap High School where he taught wood shop and driver’s education before becoming a class counselor.
He retired in 1982.
He enjoyed woodworking, traveling and fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Powell, of Port Orchard; daughters Jenny Powell of Nampa, Idaho, and Nancy (and husband Chris) Parent of Lynnwood; brother Dale (and wife Patience) of Tacoma; and two grandchildren
A graveside service was held on Jan. 7 at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard followed by a memorial service at Rill Life Tribute Center.
Soule, Edward
Edward L. Soule, of Port Orchard, died on January 2, 2008, at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. He was 56.
He was born on Dec. 5, 1951, in Lompoc, Calif., to Floyd and Charlotte (Ramage) Soule.
He graduated from South Kitsap High School in Port Orchard in 1970 and from Olympic College in Bremerton with an associates degree.
He worked for 15 years in security enforcement at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, retiring in 1978.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a senior airman. He enjoyed cooking, interior design, music and gardening.
He is survived by sons Joey, Jamie, Jonathan, Brandon (and wife Tianna) Soule; daughter Charlotte (and husband Eric) Thurston; brother Chuck (and wife Dawn) Soule; sisters Melanie (and husband John) Clauson, Cindy Nielsen, Debra (and husband Tom) Pyper and Mary Rogers; nine grandchildren; and Scott Peckham of Port Orchard;.
A celebration of life ceremony was held on Jan. 11, 2008, at Rill Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard.
