Robert “Bob” M. Lancaster

Robert “Bob” M. Lancaster, 51, of Derby died April 10, 2009, at North Country Hospital in Newport, surrounded by his family.

Mr. Lancaster was born July 19, 1957, in Tokyo, Japan, a son of Lois Smith, who survives him.

He was predeceased by his father, Royden Lancaster Sr.; by his stepfather, Lawrence Smith; by his wife, Fahrvnnisa; and by his extended family in Turkey.

He is survived by his daughter Jessica Lancaster of Bristol, Connecticut; by stepchildren: Tim, Robbie, Michelle, Joshua, and Sarah; by his brothers: Royden Lancaster, and his wife, Marlene, of Derby, Roger Lancaster and his wife, Kristan, of Williston, Randy Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Newport as well as his twin brother, Raymond Lancaster, of Palm Harbor, Florida; by his sister Linda Bussiere and her husband, Andre, of Newport; by stepsister Jody Casey and her husband, Sean, of Newport; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Gateway Center in Newport. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, in care of Deborah Smith, 77 Young Street, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Dorothy M. Ling

Dorothy M. Ling, 93, a lifelong resident of Greensboro, died at her home on April 5, 2009.

Mrs. Ling was born September 26, 1915, a daughter of Alton and Bertha (Young) White. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1933, Johnson Normal School in 1935, and Goddard College in 1970.

On September 2, 1950, she married Fred A. Ling.

She taught for many years in northern Vermont, mostly in elementary schools but also in special education.

She was a member of Greensboro United Church of Christ, the Caspian Lake Grange, the Hazen Road Pomona Grange, and Riverside Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was an active volunteer in many aspects of the community. She served as a 4-H leader for more than 25 years and on county and state foundations. She was a school director for ten years, a founding member and active participant in the Greensboro Historical Society, and a volunteer at the Greensboro Free Library and the Greensboro Nursing Home.

She was a local news reporter for many years with the Hardwick Gazette and the Caledonian-Record. In 1981, she was selected as Vermont’s Outstanding Senior Citizen, and in 1985 she was recognized by the United Church of Christ as an Outstanding Laywoman. The town of Greensboro honored her in 1990 with the Greensboro Award for Community Service.

Survivors include her son Arthur Ling and his wife, Sharon, of Hardwick; her daughter Alice Crosby and her husband, Ben, of Derry, New Hampshire; her daughter-in-law Janice Ling of Springfield, Missouri; five grandchildren: Tonya Madison and Nicole Tilden of Barre and Eric, Monica and Kelsey of Springfield, Missouri; seven great-grandchildren; her sister Clara Wells and her husband, Marvin, of Marshfield; her brother Lawrence White of Glover; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred, on September 13, 1984; by their son Alton on March 24, 2009; by her sister Josephine White; and by her brother Irwin White.

A memorial service was held at the Greensboro United Church of Christ April 14.

Donations in Mrs. Ling’s memory may be made to the Greensboro United Church of Christ, Mission Fund, Greensboro, Vermont 05841; or to Caledonia Home Health and Hospice, P.O. Box 383, St. Johnsbury, Vermont 05819.

Jessie E. Mitchell

Jessie E. Mitchell, 99, of Newport died April 7, 2009, at her home in Newport.

Mrs. Mitchell was born April 14, 1909, in Newport Center, a daughter of Lucius and Florence (Ouimet) Allen.

In 1938 she married Warren S. Mitchell, who predeceased her on November 12, 1988.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She held membership with the United Church of Newport.

She is survived by her sister Shirley Turner of Newport; by her nephew Duncan McKay and his wife, Judy, of Orange; by her niece Louise Young and her husband, Neil, of East Corinth; and by great-nieces Nan Mann, her husband, John, and their son Michael Bottiggi, Joan Whiting, her husband, Larry, and their son Benjamin, and Kathryn Lamson, her husband, Albert, and their children Matthew and Allison. She was predeceased by sister-in-law Marjorie McKay and great-nephew Duncan McKay Jr.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Spring interment will be in Pine Grove cemetery in Newport.

Irene Marie Pollander

Irene Marie Pollander, 103, of Barton died April 8, 2009, in Barton.

Mrs. Pollander was born in L’Ange Gardier, Quebec, on November 10, 1905, a daughter of Felix and Lea (Roberts) Hamel.

On May 15, 1923, she married Stanley Pollander, who predeceased her on April 20, 1977.

She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, spending time with family, and working in her vegetable and flower gardens.

She is survived by her children: Nancy Cresswell and her husband, Greg, of Newport Center, Pauline Ryan of Barton, Genevieve Lafleur and her husband, Richard, of Orleans, Joan Souliere of Newport, and Philip Pollander and his wife, Barbara, of West Palm Beach, Florida; by 26 grandchildren; by 35 great-grandchildren; by ten great-great-grandchildren; by sister-in-law Theresa Pollander of Norwalk, Connecticut; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by sons Francis and Aldei Pollander; by siblings: Aldei, Claudiemere, Arestide, Gerard, Joseph, and George Hamel, Cecile Bouchard, Elizabeth Danielson, and Theresa Carroll; by stepbrother Arsyne; and by niece Joanie Blay, with whom she spent her early childhood with her aunt Irene and uncle Stanley.

Funeral services were held April 14 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Barton with the Reverend Sixmund Nyabenda celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Spring interment will be held at St. Paul’s Catholic cemetery in Barton on May 18 at 11 a.m.

Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Pollander’s memory may be made to Maple Lane Nursing Home, 60 Maple Hill Road, Barton, Vermont 05822.

Mary Elizabeth Thyselius

Mary Elizabeth Thyselius, 74, of Newport, known as “Grammy Angel, ” died April 12, 2009, in Barton.

Mrs. Thyselius was born April 29, 1934, in Long Island, New York, to William and Matilda (Brouffil) Bovers.

She graduated as an art major from Skidmore College in Saratoga Spring, New York. She held careers in advertising design, art therapy, and nursing home activities.

She was the widow of Peter John Thyselius.

She is survived by her daughter Annie Rose Brown of Derby; by her son John Peter Thyselius of Manville, New Jersey; three grandchildren: Jason Philhower of Derby and Autumn Thyselius and Justice Thyselius of New Jersey; and by two great-grandchildren, Jonas Philhower of Newport and Dakota Truett of Arizona.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 16, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church with the Reverend Yvon Royer celebrating a Mass of Christian Burial. Friends may call on Wednesday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Memorial Chapel on Lake Road in Newport. Interment will be held at the Holy Cross cemetery in Bernardsville, New Jersey.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions to St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Catholic Church, 191 Clermont Terrace, Newport, Vermont 05855.

Bradford L. Howarth Sr.

Bradford L. Howarth Sr., 70, of Derby died suddenly in Morgan on June 27, 2009.

Mr. Howarth was born June 24, 1939, in Springfield, a son of Richard and Barbara (Bragg) Howarth.

He is survived by his children: Bradford Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Athens, Terry Peters and her husband, Mark, of North Carolina, Jolynne Murphy and her husband, Richard, of New Hampshire, Stacey Anderson of Chester, and Randy of South Carolina; by nine grandchildren; by four great-grandchildren; and by two sisters, Eleanor and Donna.

The family would be extremely interested in communicating with anyone who knew Mr. Howarth. Please contact Bradford Howarth Jr. at (802) 869-1181.

Steven Michael Ruscio

Steven Michael Ruscio, 59, of North Troy, formerly of Ashburnham, Massachusetts, died unexpectedly on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.

Mr. Ruscio, son of the late Francesco and Joan (Gaskin) Ruscio, was born April 5, 1950, in Long Branch, New Jersey.

He was raised in New Jersey and attended Merrimack College in Andover, Massachusetts, where he graduated as valedictorian of his class with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. He received an international fellowship award from Rotary International for a year of study abroad in the field of biomedical engineering at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

He and his beloved wife, Helene, settled in Ashburnham, where they raised their family for more than 20 years before moving to Vermont in 2001.

He was a master woodwright who was the sole proprietor of Christian Steward Company in Gardner, Massachusetts. He crafted many types of toys and decorative and household items. Notably he provided the wooden shingles for the restoration of both the Roosevelt Carriage House in Hyde Park and Mark Twain's boyhood home.

He loved to tinker and always relished the challenge of fixing things. He enjoyed maple sugaring, gardening, and antiquing. He delighted in hosting and cooking for family and friends on any occasion. As busy as he was, the love of his family prevailed over all.

He will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of nearly 35 years, Helene (Croteau) Ruscio; by his children: Lea H. Ruscio of Vienna, Austria, Joseph F. Ruscio and his wife, Jory, of San Francisco, California, Aimee C. Ruscio of Washington, D.C., Christopher A. Ruscio of San Jose, California, Kathleen M. Ruscio of Boston, Massachusetts, and Gregory S. Ruscio of Tokyo, Japan; by his sister Maryann T. Ruscio of Ashburnham; by his brother Kevin P. Ruscio of Bayville, New Jersey; and by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral services were held July 3 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Gardner with the Reverend Brian P. O'Toole as celebrant. Burial followed at Notre Dame cemetery in Gardner.

Those who wish to make memorial contributions are asked to consider St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee, 38105-1942.

Roberta S. Sargent

Roberta S. Sargent, 79, of Jay died in Newport on July 1, 2009, after a long illness.

Mrs. Sargent was a born to Selden and Mildred (Sargent) Willis in Troy on June 8, 1930.

She enjoyed listening to country music, having family and friends stop for a visit, and having family meals. She loved her animals; however, her family was her life. She liked to cook and kept many friends happy and full with her homemade doughnuts.

She is survived by her children: Richard and his wife, Elizabeth, of Jay, Connie Lucas and her husband, Wayne, of Jay, and David of North Troy; by grandchildren: Coral, Sarah, and Patrick Sargent and Wayne Roy Lucas; by step grandchildren: Angel Wakefield, Ann Herr and her husband, John, and Aimee Lucas and her husband, Curt; by her sisters: Melba Cota and her husband, Howard, of Troy, Priscilla Platt and her husband, James, of New Hampshire, and Ida and Christine Willis of Newport; by her brother Don Willis of Newport Center; and by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Milton A. Willis Sr. and Carlton Willis; and by sister-in-law Phyllis.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Audrey Gail Smigelski

Audrey Gail Smigelski, 66, longtime resident of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, died at home, surrounded by her loving family, and went to be with her lord and savior Jesus Christ on June 29, 2009, after a courageous eight-year battle with cancer.

Ms. Smigelski was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, on January 25, 1943, to Charlotte (Rash) Smigelski and Felix P. Smigelski.

She was a dental assistant for many years and was later employed at the Big Y Deli in Longmeadow.

She graduated from the High School of Commerce in Springfield and continued her education at dental school. She was an elder with God’s Victorious Army.

Besides her mother, Charlotte, of Longmeadow, she is survived by her two sisters, Marlene S. Coil and her husband, Larry, of Troy and Donna C. Cardwell and her husband, John, of East Longmeadow; by her nine nieces: Wendy Kuhn and her husband, David, Laureen Jones and her husband, Keith, Cherylynne Lindsey, Jill Teague and her husband, Patrick, Charlene Leary and her companion, Anthony Trinceri, Aubrie Leary, Gretchen McDonough and her husband, David, Christine Noel and her husband, Anthony, and Grace Coller and her husband, Casey; three nephews: John Cardwell and his wife, Angie, Ben Cardwell and his wife, Shannon, and Andrew Cardwell and his wife, Amy; by eight great-nieces; by three great-great-nieces; by 16 great-nephews; by three great-great-nephews; by her uncle Anthony Smigelski and his wife, Stella; by her aunt Tess Monson; by several cousins, including special cousin Fay P. Ladeau, who cared for her in her time of need.

A funeral was held July 2 at the East Longmeadow United Methodist Church. Burial was held July 3 at the Westmore cemetery.

Ava C. Lawson

Ava C. Lawson, four months old, the beloved daughter of Annette Vallieres and Bradley Lawson, died suddenly on March 3, 2010, in Newport.

She was born November 2, 2009, in Newport. She is survived by her parents, Annette Vallieres and Bradley Lawson, of Troy; by her sister, Taylor Lawson of Coventry, and by her little cousins, Jordan Carpenter of Newport Center, Corine Carpenter of Newport Center, and Alex Vallieres of Illinois. She is also survived by maternal grandmother Doris Gibney of Newport; maternal grandfathers Cory Carpenter Sr., and his wife, Colleen, of Morgan and Richard Vallieres of California; maternal grandmother Merle Lane Vallieres of Illinois; paternal grandmother Linda Lawson of Westfield; maternal great-grandmother Annette Vallieres of Derby, maternal great-grandfather Lucien Vallieres and his wife, Jeannine, of North Troy; special grandfather Todd Skinner of West Charleston; by her uncles and aunts: Cory Carpenter, Jr., of California, Daniel Carpenter of Newport, John Lawson and Diane Benway of Derby, Katie Carpenter of Morgan, Charles Carpenter of Morgan, Aaron Vallieres of Illinois; and by several great aunts and uncles.

She was predeceased by maternal great-grandparents: Charlotte and Dale Gibney, and her paternal grandfather, David Lawson. A sister, Jordan Lawson, also predeceased her.

Funeral services were held March 8, at the Church of God, Crawford Road, Derby, with the Reverend Laurence Wall officiating.

Spring interment will be in Lake Road cemetery in Newport Center.
