Beverly Mossa

Beverly Mossa, 83, of Newport died Thursday evening, May 15, 2008, at her home.

She was surrounded by family and friends during the last few days of her life, and she will be missed by so many who knew her.

Mrs. Mossa was born December 28, 1924, in Newport, a daughter of Benjamin Smith and Maude (Morgan) Smith.

She graduated from Newport High School in 1942 and went on to acquire her registered nurse degree in Boston, Massachusetts.

She married William “Bill” Mossa on August 16, 1948, and returned to this area, where she was a nurse at Broadview General Hospital and Orleans County Memorial Hospital for many years. Whether she was in the operating room or on the labor and delivery floor, her comforting and patient assurance left gentle impressions on every patient.

She left the hospital environment to become the school nurse at Newport City Elementary School, enjoying the schedule that would allow her more time to spend with her family. Her responsibilities would later include Newport High School and the junior high program.

When North Country Union High School opened in 1967, she took the position as school nurse. She remained until her retirement in June 1989.

She would forever cherish the friendships that were created during this part of her life, and she continued to keep in close touch with these special friends for the remaining years of her life.

She was devoted to her husband, Bill, and together they enjoyed many wonderful years, raising their children in Newport, traveling with friends, and hosting many celebrations at their camp in Morgan.

She was predeceased by her husband in 1983.

Her retirement was devoted to her family and grandchildren. Although she enjoyed her rose gardens, creating beautiful quilts, and traveling, the role she was happiest in was as a tender and loving mother and grandmother.

Her unconditional love and guidance will forever be treasured by her children Billie, Ben, and Candice and her granddaughters Emily and Lindsay Howe.

She is survived by her children: Billie (Mossa) Howe and her husband, Gregory Howe, of Derby, Candice Mossa and Brian Smith of Derby, and Ben Mossa and his wife, Julie (Sanville) Mossa, of Derby; by three grandchildren: Emily and Lindsay Howe of Derby and Erica Gray of Derby; by one great-grandchild, Natalie Holmes, of Derby; by her sister-in-law Lorraine Mossa of Florida; and by several nephews. Should friends desire, contributions in Mrs. Mossa’s memory may be made to the Frontier Animal Society, 4473 Barton-Orleans Road, Orleans, Vermont 05860.

Arrangements are by Curtis-Britch Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes.
