RUTH CASTLE MEYER

BRISTOL, Conn./ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Ruth Castle Meyer went home to be with the Lord Monday morning, March 18, 2002 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, Conn.

She was born in Fletcher, Sept. 9, 1915, the daughter of the late Claude and Angeline (Mayo) Castle.

She was predeceased by her husband, Darold; a daughter-in-law Doreen Meyer; three brothers Pliney, Clayton and Gembert.

She is survived by her son, Arlan, and a granddaughter, Dawn Meyer of Bristol, Conn.; two brothers, Wilmer of Fairfield, Leon of St. Albans; and one sister, Betty Marshall of Highgate; a brother and sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Fairfield Street, St. Albans. The pastor, Father Leonidas B. Laroche will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery in St. Albans. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Friday evening, March 22, 2002, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Following the services on Saturday there will be a luncheon at the Castle Homestead on Vermont Route 36 in Fairfield.

HERBERT PAUL LaFRANCE SR.

HIGHGATE SPRINGS -- A funeral service for Herbert LaFrance, Sr. will be held on Saturday, March 23, 2002, at 11 a.m. at his property in Highgate Springs.

A luncheon will follow at the Abenaki building on Grand Avenue in Swanton. Please feel free to bring a dish.

ANDREW F. BURNS

ST. ALBANS -- Andrew F. Burns, 83, a resident of this area for the past 50 years, passed away Monday night, March 19, 2002, at Holiday House Nursing Facility. He was born in Georgia, March 25, 1918, the son of the late Edgar and Jessie (Bovat) Burns.

Andy enjoyed country music, dining at McDonald's and other local eateries, sitting in Taylor Park, Western movies and television programs, especially "Gunsmoke, " telling and hearing stories, and being with people.

Survivors include a half-brother and half-sister, Lynes Decker of Bennington, and Jessie Mae Cook of Fairfield; Andy's dear friend, Yvonne Bevins of Sheldon; nieces, Gert "Minnie" Bragg of Fitchburg, Mass., Sandy Peters of St. Albans, Barb Curtis of Guildhall; and nephew, Don "Boy" Cameron of Waterbury, Conn.; and other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He also leaves close friends, Kathy Berard-Brown, Suezie Sprano, Russ Fisher, Bonnie LaFrance, and Heather Barrette, as well as other friends from the Napoli Home, Holiday House and Franklin County Senior Center. He was predeceased by five brothers and sisters, a half-sister and a close friend, James Morgan.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Pastor Steve Clark of the Georgia Plain Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired, 37 Elmwood Ave., Burlington, Vt. 05401-4390.

Visitation will be for one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Arrangements are by the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

JOYCE E. LeDUC

NEWTON TOWNSHIP, Mich./ST. ALBANS -- Joyce E. LeDuc, 74, of Newton Township, Mich., died Monday, March 18, 2002, at home.

She was born March 21, 1927, in St. Albans to Archie S. and Mary A. (Thomas) McKillop. She graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans.

She married Hubert LeDuc on June 20, 1948, in St. Albans, he survives.

Also surviving are daughters, Mary Ann (Jack) Yee of West Bloomfield and Barbara Jean (Brian) Gary of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Lauren and Jason Yee of West Bloomfield and Alexandria, Olivia and Kalab Gary of Battle Creek; sister, Polly Ladue of St. Albans.

She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Union City, Mich., and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek. She volunteered many years at Wattles Park Elementary School where she was known as 'Grandma Duke.' She was also an avid knitter and enjoyed crossword puzzles and playing Scrabble.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at Shaw Funeral Home. Family will be present from 5 until 7 p.m.

Funeral service is set for 11 a.m., Wednesday at the funeral home, Rev. Fr. Stephen Rodrigo, officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorials to Good Samaritan Hospice Care.

LEONA M. (ELDRED) REED

BELVIDERE -- Leona Mae (Eldred) Reed, age 81, passed away at Copley Hospital in Morrisville Saturday evening, March 16, 2002. She was born April 3, 1920 in Montgomery. Daughter of the late Simon A. and Julia (Grassett) Eldred. She married Charles E. Reed on Sept. 27, 1940. Charles and Leona and their children moved to Belvidere from North Haverhill, N.H. in 1951 to run the General Store in town. In 1960 they moved to Alburg, and owned and operated Reed's Store until 1975. Leona then moved to Boston with her son Glendon and later spent winters in Houston with her son and summers in Belvidere. She returned to Belvidere full time in 1995. Leona was a great homemaker and housewife. She loved cooking, sewing, quilting for her family and friends and enjoyed following her sports on T.V. She was very active in most of the Belvidere Community activities as a member of the Community Church, Community Club, Board of Civil Authority and Belvidere Cemetery Association. She was also a member of the Eastern Star-Order #76 of Alburg. Leona will be greatly missed by all of those who were fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

She is survived by her daughter Myrna Tallman and her husband Hugh; three grandchildren Dean Tallman and Sue Ann Coffin, Teal Tallman and Brent Howard, Thad Tallman and his wife Jodi; four great-grandchildren, Dustin, Trista Teal, Marissa and Dale; her sister-in-law Cora McConnell of New Hampshire; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1972; her son Glendon in 1995; her two brothers Stewart and Melvin Eldred; and her sister Ethel Harriman.

Visiting hours will be held today, Monday, March 18, 2002, at Hayes-Rich Funeral home from 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at 2:30 p.m. in the Belvidere Community Church with Reverend John Nutting officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Belvidere Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Leona's memory to Belvidere Community Church, c/o Mildred Wescome, Belvidere, Vt. 05442, or Belvidere Cemetery Assoc., c/o Gloria Allard, Treas., Lonesome Dove Lane, Belvidere, Vt. 05442. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

MYRLE L. (WARREN) LaFONTAINE

FAIRFAX -- Myrle Leona (Warren) LaFontaine, age 81, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 17, 2002, at Roncalli Health Care in St. Albans. She was born in Fairfax, July 27, 1920, daughter of the late Wayne R. and Leona M. (Chates) Warren. She married Perley E. Cota on May 18, 1937. He predeceased her in Sept. of 1990. She then married Lloyd E. LaFontaine who survives her.

She is also survived by five children, Pearl Cota, Cynthia (Cota) Day, Wayne Cota, Linda (Cota) Dumas and Carol (Cota) LaCross; and 11 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

GEORGE E. BRYCE, SR.

ENOSBURG FALLS -- George E. Bryce, Sr., age 75, died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans following a brief illness.

He was born in Berkshire May 4, 1926, the son of James and Martha (Peno) Bryce.

George had been a resident of Enosburg for the past 32 years and a former resident of Fairfield. He owned and operated dairy farms in Berkshire and Fairfield for 22 years retiring from farming in 1967. He was then employed at Union Carbide in St. Albans for 26 years retiring in 1993. George was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was on the church council. He was also a member of financial advisor of the Knights of Columbus Council #1071 of Enosburg Falls.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret (Duffy) Bryce; four sons, George Jr. and his wife Diana of Sheldon, Thomas and his wife Trudy of Enosburg, twins Edward and Edmund and his fiancee Peggy Lontine of Enosburg; two daughters, Marlene Bryce Callan of Fairfield, Laurie and her husband Chuck Longe of Sheldon; four sisters, Shirley Barry of Johnson, Martha Beyor of Swanton, Betty Kinney and Olive Belanger of Berkshire; a son-in-law James Laden of Fairfield; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Fay Laden, on March 16, 1993.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at St. John the Baptist in Enosburg with Rev. Gerard Leclerc celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave., in Enosburg Monday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

For those who wish, contributions in his memory may be made to the Knights of Columbus in care of Michael Manahan, Enosburg Falls, Vt., or St. John the Baptist Memorial fund in care of Rev. Gerard Leclerc, Enosburg Falls, Vt. 05450.

HERBERT PAUL LaFRANCE SR.

HIGHGATE SPRINGS -- Herbert Paul LaFrance Sr., 79, a lifelong resident of this community died Thursday afternoon, March 14, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

He was born in Highgate Springs, April 30, 1922, the son of the late George and Addie (Rollo) LaFrance. He attended schools in Highgate Springs and in Feb. of 1946, married the former Mary Morris who predeceased him on Jan. 7, 1990.

Mr. LaFrance spent most of his working life as a master carpenter and for more than 30 years was associated with the Ken Douglas Construction Company and for the next 17 years worked for P2 Amilhat, Warren Fournier and his great-nephew David Vanslette.

He faithfully served his country as a Sargent in the United States Army during WWII and was in the European Theater and was in five major battles. He was issued the Purple Heart with Cluster, European Ribbon and Bronze Star. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Charles DaPrato Post #778 in Swanton and the American Legion, Green Mountain Post #1 of St. Albans. An avid hunter he also belonged to the National Rifle Association, and the North American Hunting Club.

He leaves his good friend and companion, Shirley Flood of Highgate Springs; three sons, Herbert LaFrance Jr., and his wife Beverly of Highgate Springs, John LaFrance and his wife Bonnie of Highgate Falls and Dana LaFrance of Binghamton, N.Y.; two daughters, Dorothy Zuniga and her husband Salome of Rancho Dominguez, Calif., and Joan Bonyea and her husband Michael of Isle La Motte; one sister, Velma and her husband Robert Bilodeau of Richford; four brothers, Carlton LaFrance and his wife Bert of Highgate Center, Harland LaFrance and his wife Florence, Lawrence LaFrance and Louis LaFrance all of Highgate Springs; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be private and at the convenience of the LaFrance family.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Kidder Memorial Home, Swanton.
