Helen E. Beardsley
(April 25, 1923 - July 24, 2012)

Helen Eileen Beardsley - 89, of Wallace Street, passed away in the comfort of her family at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center on Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Born in Watertown NY on April 25, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Morton J. and Sadie (Horr) Martell. On October 21, 1944, she married James H “Bud” Beardsley in Watertown NY. James, her husband of 61 years, predeceased Helen on October 23, 2005.
Helen was a 1941 graduate of Watertown High School and then went to work in the business office for the Watertown Daily Times from 1941 until 1944. Following her marriage, Helen was busy as a homemaker, raising her family and working part time as a cashier in the dining room at the Hotel Woodruff and in the sports department for J.C. Penney. Helen later worked full time for over 25 years as a receptionist for Dr. L.F. Withington, from which she retired.
Helen’s memberships included Holy Family Church in Watertown NY and St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury. In her leisure time she enjoyed swimming, ice skating, knitting, crocheting and reading.
Helen is survived by her sons, Thomas Beardsley and his wife, Mary of Duxbury, and James J. Beardsley of Manlius NY; 3 grandchildren, Brayton Beardsley, Shae Beardsley and Laura Riba; 2 great-grandchildren, Jack and Sam Riba; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Helen was predeceased by two brothers, Donald and Joseph Martell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. Geneva A. Howes
(March 25, 1919 - August 10, 2012)

Geneva A. Howes - 93, of Howes Road, Moretown Common, passed away at the Squier House in Waterbury on Friday, August 10, 2012. Born in Waitsfield on March 25, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Lauren A. and Lizzie (Church) Poland. On August 26, 1942, she married Leo Howes in Waterbury. Leo predeceased Geneva on February 28, 2009.
Geneva graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1937, Valedictorian of her class and then continued her education at the Johnson Normal School where she received her teaching certificate. A longtime and well-known educator in the central Vermont region, Geneva taught in Moretown, Middlesex, Fayston, East Montpelier, Waterbury and Duxbury. She went on to earn her bachelor degree in education from the University of Vermont in 1976.
The Howes family are multi-generational farmers on Moretown Common and Geneva assisted in the operation for many years. Following her retirement, Geneva stayed active as a volunteer for RSVP, at the Midstate Regional Library in Berlin and did clerical work for Blue Flame Gas in Barre during the time that they were converting the City from underground service to propane.
Geneva served the town of Moretown as Library Commissioner, School Director and Assistant Town Clerk. Her memberships included the Middlesex United Methodist Church, the Middlesex Grange and the Vermont Farm Bureau.
Geneva’s family lovingly remembers the joy she felt while spending time with her family, gardening, reading, traveling, doing crossword puzzles, making raspberry jam and bird watching. She was also very involved in doing extensive genealogy research.
Geneva is survived by her children, Flora Lyon and her husband, Everett of Royalton, Roger Howes and his wife, Paula of Norwich, Brian Howes and his wife, Carol of Moretown and Duane Howes and his wife, Sherry of Moretown; her foster son, Wendell Labor, Jr. of Moretown; 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Geneva was predeceased by a grandson, David Lyon; two sisters, Florence Turner and Alice Tillotson; and two brothers, L. Andrew Poland and Willard Poland.

Oswell J. Goss
(September 12, 1928 - August 12, 2012)

Oswell “Ozzie” John Goss - 83, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Sunday, August 12, 2012. Born in Littleton NH on September 12, 1928, he was the son of the late John and Maude (Hutchins) Goss. On September 27, 1952, he married the former Evelyn Rita Kilby at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury
Ozzie attended schools in Warren and Moretown and then as a young man, worked as a farm hand. He later was employed by Ward Lumber Co. of Moretown, delivered milk for Winnisquam Farms of Waterbury and then worked for the State of Vermont Highway Department. Most recently he worked for the Vermont State Department of Liquor Control, retiring in 1991.
Ozzie was an integral part of the fabric in Moretown. He served as a longtime member and Assistant Fire Chief of the Moretown Volunteer Fire Department, was a Justice of the Peace, Second Constable and served as the janitor at the Moretown Town Hall. A faithful and devout member of St. Patrick Church in Moretown, Ozzie and Evelyn spent many years raising money and caretaking at St. Patrick cemetery. He was also a member of the National Guard and Mad River American Legion Post 75 in Waitsfield.
Ozzie could often times be found holding court on the front porch of their home in the village of Moretown visiting with friend and neighbors. His other interests included fishing, hunting, swimming, camping and watching NASCAR racing.
Ozzie is fondly remembered by his family for the love and devotion to his wife, Evelyn, and their children and families.
Ozzie is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Evelyn R. Goss of Moretown; their children, Patricia M. Moulton and her husband, F. George Moulton II of Bonita Springs FL, Christina A. Lamson and her husband, David of Northfield Falls, Rebecca S. Ciampi and her husband, Craig of Moretown, John O. Goss and his wife, Reta of Warren, and Michael R. Goss and his companion, Jesse King of Waterbury Center; 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Joy A. Goss in 1961.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. There will be no calling hours. Interment will take place in Mountain View cemetery in Moretown. The family requests that flowers be omitted; rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Moretown Volunteer Fire Department, PO Box 491, Moretown, VT 05660.

William Ross Beal, Jr.
(February 22, 1938 - August 18, 2012)

William Ross Beal, Jr. - 74, passed away in the comfort of his home and family on Saturday, August 18, 2012. Born in Brewster NY on February 22, 1938, he was the son of the late William Ross Beal, Sr. and Florence L. (Simms) Beal. On May 16, 1964, he married the former Elaine E. Early in Washington D.C.
Ross was a 1955 graduate of Brewster (NY) High School and continued his education, graduating in 1959 from Norwich University. Commissioned in the US Army, Ross served with the Army Corps of Engineers and Special Forces. A veteran of the Vietnam War, Ross was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. In addition, Ross earned his MBA degree in Information Systems from the State University of New York. He retired from military duty in 1979 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Moving to Waterbury Center in 1981 with his family, Ross was employed as an engineer with Verizon from which he retired.
Ross was an active member of the Norwich Alumni Association and was a commissioner of the Norwich University cemetery. He held membership with the Waterbury Congregational Church and more recently with the Green Mountain Community Alliance Church in Duxbury.
An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Ross also enjoyed working on his property and home as well as wintering in Englewood Florida.
Ross is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine E. Beal of Waterbury Center; their children, Sheryl Catherine Beal of Waterbury Center, and William Ross Beal III and his partner, Helene Lundberg of Stowe; a sister, Dolores Beal Stephens and her husband, Dr. Mallory Stephens of Wolfeboro NH; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Ross was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Ross Beal Peckham and Jane Beal Blackwood.
Memorial services will be held from the Green Mountain Community Alliance Church in Duxbury on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow. Jack Francis Burfoot
(April 20, 1992 - August 14, 2012)

Jack Francis Burfoot, son of Christopher and Maria (Roth) Burfoot, died Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at the age of 20, after living with Leukemia for 10 years. His parents were by his side.
His family will miss his positive, cheerful attitude that always shined through, even while facing his many challenges. Jack’s innocent, sweet spirit will live on in our hearts.
Jack was born on April 20, 1992 and christened at the Warren United Church. He attended the Roxbury Mountain Pre-School, Warren Elementary School and Harwood Union High School. He was treated at Vermont Children’s Hospital at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt. He attended Camp Ta-Kum-Ta, a camp for children with cancer, for seven summers. He formed relationships with many wonderful teachers, para-professionals, doctors, nurses, counselors, volunteers and community members throughout his life.
Spending time with his family was Jack’s priority. Favorite family activities included playing video games, listening to and playing music, especially the drums, movie night, going to concerts and celebrating holidays. He especially loved Christmas. He had a passion for machinery including his backhoe, numerous tractors, his ATV, and riding in the Warren Fire trucks. Jack was made an honorary member of the Warren Fire Department on Jan. 26, 2012.
Jack is survived by his parents, Christopher and Maria (Roth) Burfoot; his sisters, Mia and Abby; his maternal grandparents, John and Virginia Roth of Warren, Vt; his aunts, Jacqueline Harvie and her husband, Duncan of Toronto, Ontario, Annette Burfoot of Kingston, Ontario, Frances Grider and her husband Doug of Roanoke, Va., Laurie Roth Bartlett and her husband, Harry of Scituate, Ma., Lisa Roth Wasden and her husband Kelly of Larkspur, Ca.; his uncle Jamie Burfoot and his wife, Karen of St. Albans, Vt.; his cousins, Adam and Claire Harvie, Olivia and Nicholas Bartlett, Theo Wasden, Joshua Burfoot, Gabriel Burke-Burfoot, Benjamin Grider.
He was predeceased by Dr. Michael and Ruth (Young) Burfoot of Berkshire, Vt., and his cousin Patrick Harvie of Toronto, Canada.

Roderick Fuller
(February 25, 1935 - August 22, 2012)

On August 22, 2012, Roderick Fuller went home to be with his Lord and Savior Christ Jesus at the age of 77. He leaves behind four children; Timothy, Deborah and husband John, Mark and wife Nubia, Daniel and wife Brigitte; his six grandchildren, Nathaniel, Michelle, Ethan, Maxime, Jessica and Samantha. His family and friends grieve his absence, but rejoice in his presence with the Lord.
Roderick Fuller, the son of Maynard and Helen (Sleeper) Fuller was born February 25, 1935 in Waterbury, Vermont, and was one of five children. Roderick graduated from high school in Waterbury, Vermont. Following graduation, he attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont. With the exception of living in Florida for a period of two years, where he met and married his wife of 52 years, he lived his complete life in Vermont. He loved Vermont and worked 37 years of service to the State of Vermont and the Agency of Transportation as a Field Engineer.
Roderick loved many things such as golfing and the great outdoors, but his greatest love and devotions was to his family. He devoted his life to serving and caring for them. Roderick writes, “We were a close family. My parents and grandparents had a personal relationship with the Lord and this was a great influence on me. My childhood was filled with pleasant memories of farm life.” Roderick had a strong faith and writes, “When I was a junior in high school, I accepted the Lord into my heart at camp meeting in Johnson, Vermont. Shortly after, I was baptized.” Roderick served 27 years as an Elder at Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly where he devoted his time to serving and building the church with a heart for his community. His unwavering faith sustained him through a difficult battle with Parkinson’s disease. Through the course of his lifetime he inspired many with his perseverance, consistent kindness, and a good heart.
A service celebrating Rod’s life will be held from Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly, Route 100, Waterbury Center on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, where friends and family will join together. Visitation and viewing will begin at 11 a.m. at the church. A Coronation service honoring Roderick Fuller's life will begin at noon followed by a reception in the church.

Eleanor F. Boyde
(March 5, 1936 - August 26, 2012)

Eleanor F. Boyde - 76, passed away in the comfort of her Wallace Street home on Sunday, August 26, 2012. Born in Manhattan NY on March 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Margaret (Nichols) Luke. Eleanor was previously married to William Boyde of Austin TX.
Eleanor grew up and attended schools in New York City and later continued her education at the Community College of Vermont. As a young woman living in NY, she worked as a telephone operator for AT&T. Moving to Vermont in 1970; she spent the rest of her career as a bookkeeper, working for Montgomery Ward, NAPA Auto Parts and Cecil Percy Roofing, all of Waterbury. From 1983 until her retirement in 2001, Eleanor worked as the bookkeeper for Waterbury Home Health and continued following their merger with Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice in Berlin.
A woman of strong faith and a giving spirit, Eleanor was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the church choir and the United Methodist Women. Her other memberships included Town and Country Home Demonstration and the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens. In her leisure time she enjoyed gardening, reading, cooking, baking and exercising.
Eleanor is survived by her children, Joy L. Bond of Peoria AZ, and Glenn O. Boyde and his partner, Shannon Ghostlaw of Colchester; her 2 grandchildren, Jayden Boyde and Tiffini Boyde; a sister, Janice Jackson of Far Rockaway NY, her brothers, Sidney Luke, Jr. and Carl Luke, both of Queens NY, and Alfred Luke of Mount Vernon NY; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. She was predeceased by a sister and two brothers.
Memorial services for Eleanor will be con-celebrated from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Sunday, September 2, 2012 beginning at 10 a.m. as part of the worship service. Charles Hugh Peterson
(August 25, 1924 - August 30, 2012)

Charles Hugh Peterson - 88, of Howard Avenue, passed away at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Thursday evening, August 30, 2012. Born in Plainfield, NH on August 25, 1924, he was the son of the late Charles Hall Peterson and Rose (Pierson) Peterson. On June 14, 1952, Hugh married the former Barbara M. Chaffee in East Topsham.
Hugh was a 1942 graduate of Bradford Academy and then enlisted with the US Navy to serve during WWII. Upon his honorable discharge, Hugh returned to East Corinth where he owned and operated a dairy farm and sawmill. He and Barbara later moved to East Burke where Hugh worked as an artificial inseminator for the NH/VT Breeders Association for several years and then in 1964, came to Waterbury Center where they have made their home since. Hugh had a long and successful career as a loan officer with Farm Credit Banks, a lender to farmers, ranchers and rural residents, first in the Montpelier office and later in Burlington from which he retired in 1986.
A longtime Free Mason, Hugh was a member and past Master of Winooski Lodge 49, F&AM of Waterbury, a member of the Mt. Sinai Shrine for over 20 years, as well as VFW Post 10034 and Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59, both of Waterbury.
Hugh enjoyed many outdoor activities, which included hunting at his deer camp in Topsham, fishing, cutting wood, taking meticulous care of his home and property, motorcycling and snowmobiling. He and his family spent many summers at the camp he built in Island Pond. Hugh is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara M. Peterson of Waterbury Center; their children, Susan I. Metayer and her husband, Vincent of Hyde Park, Jennifer P. Boyden and her husband, Eric of Richmond, and Timothy H. Peterson of Waterbury; 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; as well as extended family.
An informal gathering to celebrate Hugh’s life will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at their home, 189 Howard Ave., in Waterbury Center. Private interment will take place with military honors in the Waits River cemetery. Mansfield Seth Crafts, Jr.
(April 7, 1930 - September 8, 2012)

Mansfield Seth “Manny” Crafts, Jr. - 82, of Warren VT, passed away in the comfort of his home with family on Saturday evening, September 8, 2012. Born in Concord NH on April 7, 1930, he was the son of the late Mansfield Seth Crafts, Sr. and Eliza (Colby) Crafts Bergstrom. Manny was previously married to the former Patricia Yeaton. On January 23, 1982, he married the former Jane (Carney) Johnston in Waitsfield VT.
Manny graduated from Pembroke (NH) Academy and continued his education at New England College in Henniker NH. As a young man Manny owned and operated the Rocking Moon Snack Bar at Bear Brook State Park in NH and then embarked on a long and successful career in the propane gas business. He was the owner of Crafts Gas and Electric in Pembroke NH, which he operated for many years and then following his move to Vermont he worked for Pyrofax Gas and America Gas. In addition, Manny owned and operated Crafts Training, which took him throughout New England teaching propane safety classes for technicians to be certified.
Freemasonry was an important part of Manny’s life. He was a 50-year member and Past Master of Jewel Masonic Lodge #94 of Suncook NH and a 30-year member of Mad River Masonic Lodge #77 in Waitsfield VT. His other memberships included the Plausawa Valley Country Club, the Vermont Fuel Dealers Association and the Green Mountain Chapter of Family Motor Coach Association.
In his leisure time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, boating and traveling with his wife Jane in their motor home.
Manny’s family fondly remembers him for the love, caring and consideration that he showed to them; how he always made sure that his wife, children and grandchildren felt how much they meant to him and how he took great delight in spending time together and being involved in all of his family’s activities and adventures.
Manny is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jane Crafts of Warren VT; his children, Cynthia J. Wilkinson and her husband, Thomas of Concord NH, Deborah C. Stempel and her husband, Sylvester of Waterbury Center VT, James M. Crafts of Warren VT and Patrick J. Johnston of Carefree AZ; his 6 grandchildren, Nathan Wilkinson, Kristin Wilkinson, Sara Wilkinson, Karli Stempel, J. Griffin Crafts and Samuel M. Crafts; his former wife, Patricia Y. Crafts of Pembroke NH; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Manny was predeceased by a son, Jonathan Seth Crafts, 2 brothers, William M. Crafts and Charles G. Crafts, and a sister, Virginia C. Wells.
Memorial services will be held from the Waitsfield (VT) United Church of Christ on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Services will be held in Concord NH at a date and time to be announced. Robert Jay Alan Brody
(July 5, 1949 - September 6, 2012)

Robert Jay Alan Brody, 63, of Stowe, VT, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2012. He was born in Cleveland, OH to Betty and Ernest O Brody. "Bobby" spent his youth in Cleveland. While at Boston University, "Brodes" became a coxswain for the BU rowing team. He was a serious competitor and loved the sport; he won a Bronze in the 1971 Pan American Games and a Silver in the 1979 World Rowing Championship.
After BU, he got on his motorcycle and headed west, stopping at every state park and mountain he could. His love of snow and the mountains led him to Park City where he worked and played for several years. Eventually, he made his way back east to Stowe where he lived for almost thirty years. For twenty years, "Bob Brody" worked at Concept 2 in Morrisville, VT with world-class rowers from around the world. In 1979, he jumped back into the coxswain seat in an eight boat with the veteran and very accomplished “Motley Crew.” They competed in the Head of the Charles in Boston every fall.
In 1985, he married Heidi Hartwell. Soon after, their daughter Samantha joined the family. Robert loved his role as father. "Dad" saw in Sam a kindred spirit. He supported every endeavor and adventure she wished to explore. In recent years, Robert found a new passion acting in local theaters. It was at the Hyde Park Opera House in Fiddler on the Roof that he met and married Donna Collins. Robert wanted to fulfill his dream of living by the ocean and moved to Key West, but soon he realized he was happier in Stowe, his home. This is where he spent his last years with his dog, Neo.
There were many pastimes that kept Robert busy. He could be found every Sunday doing the N.Y. Times crossword puzzle in pen. For years, he was the player with all the answers in any game of Trivial Pursuit. He was an avid reader and a familiar face at the Stowe Free Library. Robert was also an EMT volunteer for the Stowe Rescue Squad.
Robert’s father, Ernest O. Brody, predeceased him. He is survived by his mother, Betty Brody of Boca Raton, FL; his daughter, Samantha Ann Megan Brody of Santa Fe, NM; his sister Carol Brody (Marc Lipton) of Ann Arbor, MI and Dallas, TX; his sister, Terri Brody of Cleveland, OH and several nieces and nephews.
A donation to the Stowe Rescue Squad (312 S. Main St. Stowe, VT 05672) or to the MDS Foundation (mds-foundation.org) in his memory would be meaningful. A memorial gathering will take place at a later date. Condolences may be shared on the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home website, (perkinsparker.com.)

Mary Agnes Harriman
(May 11, 1917 - December 15, 2011)

Mary Agnes Harriman - 94, a lifelong resident of Waterbury passed away peacefully at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Thursday, December 15, 2011. Born in Middlebury on May 11, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Napoleon and Genevieve (LeClair) DeGuise. On July 27, 1935, she married Gerald L. Harriman, Sr. in Waterbury. Gerald passed away on November 9, 1995.
Mary attended Waterbury schools and following her marriage, was happy and busy as a homemaker and raising her nine children. Her memberships included St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas - Court St. Theresa #551 and the Altar Society of St. Andrew Church.
In her leisure time, Mary enjoyed knitting and crossword puzzles. She is lovingly remembered for her dedication to her large extended family and her church.
Mary is survived by her children, Teresa Fay of Waterbury, Frances Ward of South Meriden CT, Ann Loring of Myrtle Beach SC, Patricia Patterson of Palmetto FL, Catherine Furlong of Guild NH, Gerald Harriman, Jr. of Hendersonville NC, Bernard Harriman of East Montpelier and William Harriman of Bolton; 31 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mary was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Harriman, and two sisters, Catherine Redmond and Rita Oryell.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on December 29, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church parish hall. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on December 28, 2011 from 6 - 8 p.m. For those who wish, memorial gifts would be appreciated to St. Andrew Catholic Church, 109 South Main Street, Waterbury VT 05676 or to the Vermont Special Olympics (www.vtso.org).
