Gerald L. Towne
(December 30, 1924 - July 5, 2011)

Gerald L. Towne - 86, a life long resident of Waterbury Center, passed away in the comfort of his family at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Born in Montpelier on December 30, 1924, he was the son of the late Harold and Lois (Leach) Towne. On October 9, 1954, Gerald married
the former Patricia L. Reagan in Moretown.
Gerald was a 1943 graduate of Waterbury High School and then entered the US Army where he served in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations during WWII. Following his discharge from the service, Gerald returned home and continued working on the family farm until it was sold. He then went to work for the Mt. Mansfield Dairy Co-op as a field manager until it merged with the Cabot Co-op in 1961. With Cabot, Gerald became a plant supervisor for their cheese manufacturing operation in Morrisville before becoming a supervisor of packaging and processing at the main Cabot Creamery Plant in Cabot. Following his retirement from Cabot in 1987, Gerald became a school bus driver for the Harwood Union High School District, which he enjoyed for 10 years.
Gerald was a member of Winooski Lodge #49 F&AM, the Waterbury VFW #10034, the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens where he helped deliver Meals-On-Wheels, and RSVP. In his leisure time, Gerald enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, horseshoes, snowmobiling, dancing - particularly Polkas, and was an avid reader, His family fondly remembers Gerald as being the consummate family man, his love of family vacations on Prince Edward Island and in Maine but most of all, just the pure joy he felt with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia Towne of Waterbury Center; their children, Sharon Ward and her husband, Calvin of Moretown, Susan Conway and her husband, James of Hudson Quebec, Sarah Black and her husband, Benjamin of Morrisville, and Steven Towne and his wife, Rebecca of Cambridge; his grandchildren, Colin Ward, Caitlin Ward, Chelsea Conway, Shannon Conway, McKenna Black, Alyson Black and Anna Towne; his great grandson, Mason Quenneville; 2 sisters, Margery Irish and her husband, Maxwell of Waterbury Center, and Kathleen Quimby of Duxbury; a brother, Justin Towne and his wife, Jackie of Port Orchard WA; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Gerald was predeceased by a brother, Rodney Towne.
A celebration of Gerald’s life will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Inurnment will take place with military honors in Waterbury Center cemetery. Carol - Ann Rita Callaghan
(July 4, 1941 - July 15, 2011)
Carol-Ann Rita Callaghan - 70, of Moretown, passed away in the comfort of her family at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Friday, July 15, 2011. Born in Coventry RI on July 4, 1941, she was the daughter of the late James and Rita (Blanchette) Callahan. Carol was previously married
to Dennis Bache of Moretown.
Carol was a 1959 graduate of Coventry High School and continued her education at Rhode Island College where she earned her degree of Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education. A lifelong educator, Carol began teaching third grade in Scituate, RI and went on to earn her Master’s of Education in 1970 at Rhode Island College. In 1971 she moved to the Mad River Valley, settling in Moretown where she led a busy life as a homemaker and raising her five children. In 1985 Carol resumed teaching at the Moretown Elementary School as a substitute teacher and para-educator. She began taking night school classes at St. Michael’s College where she earned her Master’s in Special Education in 1988. She worked at the Moretown Elementary School for 22 years doing what she loved, teaching children how to read, write and learn. She worked tirelessly at additional coursework to meet the needs of her students with dyslexia, ADD/ADHD and Downs Syndrome. She retired in 2007 as a special education teacher in Moretown.
Her memberships included the St. Andrew Society; she attended church at St. Patrick in Moretown, St. Andrew in Waterbury and St. Augustine in Montpelier where she enjoyed singing in the church choirs in both Waterbury and Montpelier. She enjoyed singing and being a member of several choirs in the Central Vermont area, and loved the arts, opera and theater. She was a long time member of the 4-H community working as a volunteer leader. In her leisure time, Carol liked to cook, garden, sew, knit, research genealogy, travel and spend time with her family.
Carol is survived by her children, Christina M. Bache of Tampa FL, Judith A. Bache and her husband David Schantz of Starksboro, Sarah E. Bache of Waterbury, Michael A. Bache and his wife, Sarah of Fair Haven, and Andrew M. Bache of Santa Barbara CA; her grandson, Gabriel A. Bache of Fair Haven; her sister, Marie Andrade of Coventry RI and her three nephews James, John and Jeff Andrade.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Thursday, July 21, 2011 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room. Stephanie Barbara Myette
(June 13, 1990 - January 2, 2012)
Stephanie Barbara Myette - 21, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 2, 2012. Born in Berlin on June 13, 1990, she was the daughter of William Myette and Bonnie (Brennan) Haskins.
Stephanie attended Harwood Union High School in Duxbury and was a graduate of Community High School of Vermont. A mother at a young age, Stephanie enjoyed time with her son Caleb, was proud to have completed her education, was active in the Teen Parent Program through the Youth Service Bureau and was a music enthusiast.
Stephanie is survived by her son, Caleb Myette of Waterbury; her mother, Bonnie Haskins and her husband, Scott of Waterbury; her father, William Myette of Torrington CT; 2 sisters, Amanda Brennan of Waterbury and Melissa Dwan of Torrington CT; her brother, Christopher Commo of Worcester; her maternal grandmother, Barbara Straw and her husband, Dennis of Keeseville NY; her step-grandmother, Alice Haskins of Waterbury; her companion, Jonathan Piro of Waterbury; her close friend and mentor, Joy Spontak of Montpelier; her lifelong friends, Cortney Cookson of Montpelier and Jessica Roggensack of Waterbury; as well as a niece, 2 nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Stephanie is predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Howard Brennan of Waterbury, and her paternal grandparents Almaline Smith of Torrington CT and William Myette Sr. of Southwick, MA.

Thomas A. Merrifield
(July 16, 1952 - January 9, 2012)
Thomas A. Merrifield - 59, of River Road, Duxbury VT, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin VT on Monday evening, January 9, 2012. Born in Barre VT on July 16, 1952, he was the son of the late Robert James Merrifield, Jr. and Doris (Williamson) Merrifield. On July 20, 1974, Tom married
the former Sally Hutchins in Kingfield ME.
Tom was a 1970 graduate of Mansfield (MA) High School and then continued his education at the University of Maine in Orono ME, graduating in 1974 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science. Tom went on to work in manufacturing for several companies in Mansfield MA. Before moving to Vermont in 1984, he received computer training at Southeastern Regional Technical School in Bridgewater MA. Tom was employed in technical support for several computer companies in the Central Vermont area. Most recently Tom worked in the Agency of Natural Resources for the State of Vermont in computer technical support.
An avid motorcycle enthusiast, Tom also enjoyed fishing, collecting antiques, traveling throughout New England on his bike and spending time on the ocean in Maine.
Tom is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sally H. Merrifield of Duxbury VT; their sons, John D. Merrifield and William H. Merrifield, both of Duxbury VT; two brothers, Ralph P. Merrifield and his wife, Nancy of Mansfield MA, and Robert J. Merrifield III and his wife, Donna of Pepperell MA; father and mother-in-law Deane and Virginia Hutchins of Boothbay Harbor ME; sisters-in law Jeannie Hutchins and husband Roger of Camden ME, Nancy and Tom Libbey of San Jose, CA and Becky Hutchins of Auburn ME; two special children whom he and Sally thought of as grandchildren, Jordan and Connor Bombard of Duxbury VT; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Friends and family are invited for a time of visitation from 2 - 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 14, 2012 at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home, 48 South Main Street, Waterbury VT. Marion E. Moulton
(November 22, 1914 - January 10, 2012)
Marion E. Moulton - 97, a lifelong resident of Waterbury Center, passed away peacefully at the Squier House in Waterbury on Tuesday, January 10, 2012. Born in Waterbury Center on November 22, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Francis L. and Lizzie (Hart) Minott. On July 3, 1940, Marion married
Ancel R. “Mike” Moulton in Waterbury Center. Mike predeceased Marion on August 5, 1984.
Marion was a 1932 graduate of Waterbury High School and then went to work as a housekeeper for the Gilbert Family in Waterbury for several years. She later was employed at the Waterbury Center Post Office as a postal clerk, retiring on June 30, 1978 following 22 years of service. In addition, Marion and Mike operated a dairy farm for many years on Guptil Road that has remained in the family for 5 generations.
Her memberships included the Waterbury Grange #237 where she has been a member for 71 years, a member since April 9, 1950 of the Waterbury Center Community Church where she served as the superintendent of Sunday School for 24 years, a charter member of the Waterbury Historical Society and was an Assistant Librarian at the Waterbury Center Library.
In her leisure time Marion was an avid historian and writer, enjoyed cultivating roses and antiques.
Marion is survived by her daughter, Jane Rondeau and her husband, Ronald of South Burlington; her granddaughter, Andrea King Andrus and her husband, William R. Andrus of South Burlington; 2 great-grandchildren, William Michael Andrus and Evelyn Jane Andrus; 3 step-grandchildren, Erica, Evan and Emily Rondeau; 2 sisters, Louise Welch of Waterbury Center and Beverly Farnham of Williamstown; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family. Marion was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Moulton King, and 2 sisters, Alice Sweet and Myrtie Beane.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Betty Bell of the RSVP Senior Companion Program for her wonderful friendship and assistance to Marion for over 15 years.

Charles Moser Weeks
(July 27, 1927 - January 2, 2012)

Charles Moser Weeks - 84, passed away on January 2, 2012 in Burlington VT, following a brief illness. He was born July 27, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio.
Charles was a 1945 graduate of the University School in Shaker Heights OH and then prepared for enlistment immediately upon graduation in the US Navy "for the duration and a year”. He served from 1945-1946, working on sonar circuitry.
Following his discharge from the service, he continued his education receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Amherst College, Amherst, Mass in 1950 and received his L.L.B. from Harvard Law School in 1953.
On November 28, 1953 he married
the former Julia Hatton Ellis at St. John's Episcopal Church, Grand Haven, Michigan.
Charles was an attorney for 40 years at the law firm of Thompson, Hine & Flory in Cleveland Ohio from 1953 until his retirement in 1993. He was one of the lead attorneys in the probate and tax-planning group and served as head of the committee overseeing all non-legal personnel.
He served on the Board of Directors of the Salvation Army of Cleveland, and the Booth Memorial Hospital operated by the Salvation Army. He also served as Principal Attorney for the Elwell-Parker Electric Company of Cleveland, Ohio.
Charles moved to Middlebury, Vermont in 2008.
During his career and in retirement he was an active traveler, mostly on foot in remote areas. Among other trips, he trekked through Nepal and the high mountain areas of the Himalaya, Peru, New Zealand and Alaska. He trekked to the base camp of Mt. Everest and K2; climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro and from sea level to Angel Falls in Venezuela.
Charles is survived by sister Mary Weeks Goodwin of Rutland, Vermont; his children Katherine Weeks Cadwell of Fayston, Vermont; David A. Weeks of Tucson, Arizona; and Brian A. Weeks of Rochester, Michigan, and four grandchildren.

Claire P. Voelker
(November 5, 1927 - January 27, 2012)
Claire P. Voelker - 84, of Waterbury, Vermont, formerly of Garden City, New York, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 27, 2012.
Born Claire Patricia Rose Craven on November 5, 1927, in Jamaica Queens, NY, she was raised by parents Blanche and Clarence with her sibling Blanche and cousins Robert and Bruce (McCarthy). The family resided briefly in Norwalk, Connecticut before returning to New York in Flushing, Queens. Claire graduated from St. Agnes High School, Flushing, in 1944; Adelphi University in 1948; and completed her Master’s in Education from Adelphi in 1976. Claire taught elementary school at St. Raphael’s in East Meadow, NY 1969—1987.
On June 19, 1948, Claire married
Robert Joseph Voelker, Jr. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Flushing. The couple resided in Cohoes, New Hyde Park and Farmingdale, NY before settling down in Garden City at 3 Beech Street with their six children. Robert owned and operated the family real estate business in New Hyde Park. Bob and Claire were active, devoted members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garden City. In later life, the couple moved to Waterbury, VT with their daughter, Patricia and son-in-law, John.
Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, teacher and friend, Claire enriched the lives of many through her kindness, generosity and passion for living. Claire loved her many friends and enjoyed spending time on Long Island laughing with them. She eagerly traveled throughout the northeast to visit and spoil her seven grandchildren. “Noonie” always brought a smile.
Claire is survived by her children, Patricia Halloran, Jo Ann Tacchi, Robert Voelker III, Peter Voelker, John Voelker and Charles Voelker; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Jennifer, Rachel, Daniel, Robert, Carolyn and Andrew; five great-grandchildren, Barrett, Connor, William, Emmett and Lillian, and her “other children” (spouses) Mike, John, Dawn and Kim. In addition, she leaves behind many whose lives she has touched and will be remembered for her gentle personality, signature intelligence and extraordinary sensitivity.

Helen M. Dibbell
(July 4, 1925 - February 10, 2012)
Helen M. Dibbell - 86, a longtime resident of Waterbury Center, passed away at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Friday evening, February 10, 2012. Born in Winchester CT on Independence Day, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Philip R. and Mae E. (Clark) Margraf. Helen often chuckled about the fact that she vowed to never marry a farmer, yet married
the first one she met. She and L. Nelson Dibbell were married
on January 22, 1948 in Waterbury Center.
Helen attended schools in Winchester CT and moved to Waterbury Center in 1947. A devoted farmer’s wife with a consummate work ethic, Helen raised three children and worked all of her life. Following her marriage she was employed at the former Aylward’s Nursing Home in Colbyville as a nursing assistant, the former Kellett’s Kookie Kitchen Bakery in Waterbury Center and then returned to in-home nursing care for the former Waterbury Home Health (now Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice). She later enjoyed her time working with plants at the former Hunger Mountain Greenhouse and Evergreen Gardens, both of Waterbury Center. Helen became part of the sales team at the Home On The Range specialty kitchen store on Stowe Street in Waterbury and then continued when the kitchen store was purchased by the V.L. Perkins Co. Furniture Store and moved to South Main Street. Following the closing of the furniture store, Helen worked for the former Waterbury Market on Stowe Street before working seasonally at Grenier’s Vegetable’s and Bakery in Waterbury Center from which she retired. In addition, Helen was a longtime Avon representative.
Her memberships included the Waterbury Grange #237 and the Waterbury Center Community Church. In her leisure time she was a voracious reader, loved to crochet and knit, crossword puzzles and motorcycle riding with her son Alan.
Helen is survived by her husband of 64 years, L. Nelson Dibbell of Waterbury Center; their children, Sandra Dibbell and her fiancé, Gilbert Blanchard, Jr. of Cavendish, Richard Dibbell and his wife, Judee (Aubertin) of Montpelier, and Alan Dibbell of Waterbury Center and his wife, Diancy Adams of Barre; as well as 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held from the Waterbury Center Community Church on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church dining room.
