Everett M. "Jack" Larrow
Everett M. "Jack" Larrow, 84, of Waitsfield, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Friday, May 21, 2004. Born in East Warren on September 22, 1919, he was the son of the late Wilbur and Mary (Holcomb) Larrow. On December 31, 1940, he married
the former Jessamine Bettis in Rutland.
Jack attended schools in East Warren and was a 1938 graduate of Waitsfield High School. As a young man, Jack worked as a truck driver for John Eaton's Lumber business, worked on his father's farm, and was manager of the Freeman Lovett Farm until 1944. Jack served his country proudly with the U.S. Army during WWII. Captured as a POW, Jack escaped the enemy and was able to make his way back to his unit. He received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Returning to The Valley, Jack managed the Bowen-Hunter Bobbin Mill in Warren for several years and later was employed at Bonnette's Service Station in Waitsfield. An outdoorsman and herdsmen at heart, Jack took great pleasure in managing the Rowland "Toby" Richard's Floodwoods Farm in Waitsfield during the summer and was a snow groomer for the Mad River Glen ski area during the winter, jobs that he held for over 25 years and from which he retired.
His memberships included the VFW Post # 10034 of Waterbury, Mad River Valley American Legion Post # 75 of Waitsfield, the Valley Lodge #16 IOOF and the Waitsfield-Fayston Volunteer Fire Department, both of which he served with for over 50 years; the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, the Mad River Valley Lodge #77 F&AM, and served the town of Waitsfield as a Selectman and the enviable job of many municipalities...fence viewer.
In his leisure time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, playing cards and spending time at the family camp in Ferrisburgh on Lake Champlain. Jack truly cherished all of the many friends he made throughout his long life in the Mad River Valley.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Jessamine Larrow of Waitsfield; their two daughters, Audrey Brown of Granville and Sherry Larrow of Waitsfield; three grandsons, Anthony and Timothy Brown, and Raymond Griffith; two great-grandchildren, Shawna Brown and Garrett Brown; a sister, Erma Reagan of Pittsfield MA; and a niece, Roberta Foley. He was predeceased by a son, Terry E. Larrow, and three sisters, Dorothy Larrow, Edla Martin, and Elaine "Betty" Cota.
Memorial services will be held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ at 11 a.m. on June 12, 2004. There will be no calling hours. Ruth Lowe Fowler
Ruth Lowe Fowler, 85, of Warren, died April 19, 2004 in Lewisburg, PA following an extended illness.
Born October 28, 1918 in Rochester, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Blair) Lowe. She attended business school in Boston after her high school graduation and was employed for a number of years at the University of New Hampshire where she met her husband Hollis. They had been married
nearly 47 years when he died in 1991.
She was an active member of churches wherever she lived, most often devoting her time to the work of the Deaconesses, caring for people who were ill. During the years she lived in Andover, Massachusetts, she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and later in Westfield, Massachusetts, a member of the Tuesday Morning Club.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, friend and relative who leaves behind a legacy of hope, courage, faith, love and laughter.
Her brother Malcolm was killed in World War II. She is survived by her daughter Catherine Fowler Payn, son William Fowler, and grandson Daniel Payn all now of Lewisburg, PA.
The graveside service and burial were at the Rochester cemetery, Rochester, New Hampshire on April 23, 2004.

John (Jack) Dillon
John (Jack) Dillon of Waitsfield died unexpectedly on Friday, May 14, 2004. Born in New York City in 1927, he was 77 when he died. Following graduation from high school in Fort Worth, Texas, he attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and served as a midshipman on board a merchant ship in Japan and the Philippines. He later served in the Army of Occupation in Korea.
He graduated from Texas Christian University in 1950 and joined the National Guard, where he was an executive officer, first in Texas and later in New Jersey. In 1955 he married
Susan Smith in New Jersey and worked as a broker in real estate sales there until moving to Vermont in 1984. While living in Vermont he enjoyed many outdoor activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, camping and skeet shooting. He also enjoyed the association of his many friends, including two from his military days, Chuck Allen and Joe Koch.
He was a longtime member of the Rotary Club and was designated a Paul Harris fellow in 1987. He served on the board of the Waitsfield Historical Society and was an active parishioner of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church in Waitsfield.
He is survived by his wife, Susan, of Waitsfield, his daughter Kate Ryley and her husband, Don, and also by his son John and his wife Susan, all of Waitsfield, and by his daughter Anne of New Jersey. He is also survived by his brothers Peter Dillon of Rhode Island and David Dillon of Texas. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Jake Ryley of Breckenridge, CO, and Matt Ryley, Jamie Dillon and Caroline Dillon of Waitsfield.
A memorial service will be held at the Round Barn, East Warren Road, Waitsfield on Sunday, May 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. Instead of flowers, donations to the Joslin Memorial Library, P.O. Box 359, to the Waitsfield Historical Society, P.O.Box 816, or to St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1133, all Waitsfield VT 05673, would be very much appreciated.
Maurice L. Brown

Maurice L. Brown
Maurice L. Brown, 84, passed away peacefully Friday, April 30, 2004 at the Woodridge Nursing Home after suffering a stroke.
He was born on the family farm in Moretown on October 26, 1919, to Leo and Maude (Bulkley) Brown. He attended school in Montpelier and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1937.
He married
Nancy Hawthorne in Barre on July 14, 1945. They made their life on the family farm.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter Susan and her fiancé Tom Companion of Moretown; one son Gary and his wife Cheryl of Moretown; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and a sister Dorothy Gough of Waterbury.
He was predeceased by a son Maurice (Curly) Brown Jr. on September 21, 1983.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Michael S. Ram

Michael S. Ram, formerly of the Mad River Valley, passed away on April 19, 2004 at his home in West Rupert, Vermont.
Michael lived in The Valley from 1969 to 1990, first working as a ski patroller at Sugarbush. During his years in Warren and Waitsfield, he participated in numerous community activities, including youth hockey, the Valley Players and the Waitsfield Planning Commission.
Most recently Michael, who was 59 years old at the time of his passing, was employed as a guide and instructor with the Orvis Fly Fishing School in Manchester, Vermont, where he was able to share with many his great love for fly fishing and the Vermont countryside.
Michael is survived by his children Ethan M. Ram and Whitley A. Ram and stepson, Richard Pinkham.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Second Chance Animal Hospital in Shaftsbury, Vermont, and Casting for Recovery in Manchester.
Gretchen Siegfried

Gretchen Siegfried, 37, passed away peacefully at her home Monday, April 19, 2004 with her family by her side. She was born June 11, 1966 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the daughter of Richard and Dianne Currier Heinrich. She was a 1984 graduate of Kingswood Regional High School in Wolfeboro, NH and attended Chamberlain College in Boston. Gretchen was the controller at Ye Olde England Inne in Stowe.
She married
Peter Siegfried April 11, 1997 in Taneytown, Maryland. Gretchen enjoyed gardening, reading and taking long walks with her dog, Aspen.
Gretchen is survived by her husband, Peter; her mother, Diane Sheehan and husband Bill, of Center Ossipee, NH; maternal grandparents, Lester and Elizabeth Currier of Center Ossipee, NH; paternal grandmother, Charlotte Heinrich of Derry, NH; her father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Lucy Siegfried of Warminster, PA.
She was predeceased by her father, Richard Heinrich and paternal grandfather, Herman Heinrich.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, April 24, at the Stowe Community Church. Interment will be May 1, 2004 in the Grant Hill cemetery in Center Ossipee, NH.

Greta Agnes Berno

Greta Agnes Berno, 87, a long time resident of Duxbury, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, April 9, 2004. Born in Duxbury on May 31, 1916, she was the daughter of the late Bartlett and Gladys (LaVanway) Sherman. On February 23, 1935, she married
Murl H. "Pete" Berno in Waitsfield. Mr. Berno passed away on April 16, 2001.
Greta attended schools in Duxbury and as a young woman, worked doing housekeeping for several families in the greater Waterbury-Duxbury area. Following her marriage, she worked at the Demeritt Co. in Waterbury and helped her husband operate a small dairy operation from their home in Duxbury. Greta was a familiar and gentle face at Harwood Union High School in Duxbury where she worked as cafeteria staff for several years. Most recently she and her family owned and operated Berno Lumber Co., retiring in 1994.
Greta was a long time dedicated member and treasurer of the South Duxbury Congregational Church and belonged to the Busy Bee's Christmas Club. In her leisure time she enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, knitting and crocheting.
Greta is survived by her children, Breta Grace and her husband, Stephen of Duxbury, Randolph Berno and his wife, JoAnn of Duxbury; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 1 great great-grandson; 2 sisters, Marjorie Driscoll of Cape Coral, FL and Doris Howard of Moretown; 2 brothers, Bartlett "Pint" Sherman Jr. of Duxbury, and Robert Sherman and his wife, Lillian of Moretown; as well as nieces and nephews. Greta was predeceased by her son, Howard Murl Berno; 2 brothers, Howard Sherman and Roland Sherman; and 6 sisters, Marion Hunter, Beulah Sherman, Bernice Sherman, Henrietta West, Genevieve Baird and Barbara Morse.
A Service Celebrating Greta's life was held from the Wesley United Methodist Church on Wednesday, April 14, at 11 a.m. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to the South Duxbury Congregational Church, c/o JoAnn Berno, 773 Turner Hill Road, Duxbury VT 05660.
Dorothy Brown

Dorothy Brown, 75, of Lunenburg, Vermont, and formerly of Warren, Vermont, died Saturday April 3, 2004 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was surrounded by her family, favorite books and poems that she had written. Born in Rochester, Vermont she was the daughter of the late John E. and Elizabeth (Manchester) Miller.
She was a loving homemaker, especially enjoying the Sunday dinners she loved to cook for her family. She ran a small convenience store for years in Warren and also kept books for her husband's business. Mrs. Brown was a proud member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed bird watching. She loved to write religious poems and was involved in the mail ministry.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Sherwood Brown Sr., two sons Robert Southwick and his wife Maureen of New Haven, CT, Sherwood Brown Jr. and his wife Denise of Duxbury; three daughters, Sheila Eurich and her husband Kevin of Duxbury, Lynn White and her husband Stephen of Waitsfield, Holly Brown and her companion Mike of Dalton, NH; seven grandchildren, Ginger, Buffy, Kelly, Heather, Tyler, Abbey, Hannah; two great-grandchildren, Ryan and Taylor, as well as three brothers and two sisters.

Robert E. Young, Sr. (Bob) of Greenport, NY and Irasville, (Waitsfield) VT, died on Saturday, April 3, 2004 surrounded by his family. Born in Waterbury, CT on May 17, 1925, he was raised in Prospect, CT.
Crosby High School 1942, Yale University 1945W, US Navy Pacific Fleet 1947 (Ensign-USS Hanson), Columbia Law School 1950. Lawyer - Gilbert, Segall & Young ( NYC) 1950-2001, Counsel to Reynolds Richards (NYC) 2001 - 2004. Formerly of Brooklyn, Orangeburg, Thornwood and Manhattan, NY. Member - National Golf Links of America, Yale Club of NYC, New York Bar Association.
Skier of Mad River Glen from the 1950's, he brought his family to The Valley eventually building a ski house in 1962. His wife Dorothy, a brother, sister, sons Robert and James, son-in-law Franz Kluckner, daughter-in-law, Diane, grandchildren Justina Boyden, Ashley Young, Stefan Kluckner, Ry Young, Amanda Young, great grandchildren Sarah Boyden and Elijah Kluckner and a stepson survives him.
He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Grace T. Young in 1977 and his daughter, Pamela J. Kluckner in 2003. Donations in his memory may be given to the "Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad, PO Box 58, Greenport, NY 11944.
Bernice Marie Thompson

Bernice Marie Thompson, 74, a longtime resident of Waterbury, passed away at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center on Friday, March 26, 2004. Born in Hinesburg on April 30, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ira and Hazel (Stockwell) Bobar. She was previously married
to Ernest Thompson.
Bernice attended schools in Waterbury. She was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury as a psychiatric technician, retiring in 1981 due to a disability. Bernice was a faithful member of Jehovah's Witnesses for the past 20 years where she attended the Moretown Congregation. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening.
Bernice is survived by her loving daughter, Audrey Cubitt of Waterbury; her grandson, Raymond Cubitt Jr. of West Warwick RI; a sister, Mildred Cook of Warwick RI; a brother, Otis Bobar of Montpelier; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A service of celebration for the life of Bernice Thompson will be held from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses on Route 100, Moretown on Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 4 p.m. There will be no calling hours.
