ELIZABETH A. (McNALLY) GREENE
WINOOSKI -- Elizabeth Ada (McNally) Greene, age 81, passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Wednesday, March 27, 2002. She was born in Cambridge Sept. 9, 1920, daughter of the late Frederick and Ada (Kusic) McNally. She married Joseph Ovilla Greene in Richford on Nov. 16, 1940, and together they have celebrated over 60 years of marriage. Elizabeth was a waitress at the Green Mountain Inn in Stowe for many years. She enjoyed her Bingo games whenever possible. Most of all, she lived for her family, cherishing each precious moment with all of her children as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her loving husband Joseph Ovilla Greene of Winooski; two sons, Joseph Greene and his wife Estela of Las Vegas, Nev., Rodney Greene of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Pamela Hamilton and her husband William of West Berkshire, Patrice Lavalette and her husband James of Hinesburg; a brother, Glendon McNally of Cambridge; two sisters, Fanny Maynard of Montpelier, Charlotte Shank of Newport, N.H.; ten grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; three sisters-in-law, Roberta McNally of Cambridge, Hallie McNally of Jeffersonville, Evelyn McNally of Barre. She was predeceased by six brothers, Frederick, Elton, Everette, Eugene, Neil, Cleon; a sister, Janice McNally; a great-granddaughter Karianna Bernard; a brother-in-law Gaylord Maynard; two sisters-in-law, Wilma McNally and Ruby McNally.
Funeral services will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 2 p.m., with Reverend Elizabeth Griffin of the United Church of Fairfax officiating. Burial will follow in the family lot in Jeffersonville Village Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held at Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax on Saturday, March 30. 2002, from 12 p.m. until the hour of the funeral service.
GARY L. CALDWELL
ST. ALBANS -- Gary Lorne "Bud/Buddy" Caldwell, age 61 of St. Albans, passed away Monday, March 25, 2002, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington following a lingering illness. He was born June 22, 1940, in Bedford, Que., the son of Ruby (Brown) and the late James Caldwell.xxxHe was an avid outdoorsman with a superior knowledge of life. His charming wit and humor will be missed by many, especially his grandsons. He was extremely proud of his Canadian citizenship and of his Indian Heritage. Buddy served in the Royal Canadian Army Second Armored Divisions RCAC. He worked in several professions as a young man to include carpentry for various contractors and also mining in the Sheritt-Gordon mines in Lynn Lake, Manitoba. Later, after moving to the states, he worked for the State of Vermont at Camp Johnson, Overhead Door Company, Vt. Department of Fish and Wildlife, and most recently as an assembly technician at Century Arms.
He thoroughly enjoyed his tenure with Vt. Department of Fish and Wildlife where his duties had him on the lake in the summer boating and in the winter on the ice snowmobiling. Buddy enjoyed many sports during his life, both as a participant and a spectator, including baseball, softball, auto racing, fishing and especially hockey.
He helped to raise money for various charities including Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Bike-A-Thons and March of Dimes Walk-A-Thons. Buddy possessed an incredible thirst for knowledge. He was always learning new things from reading and hands-on experience. He was quick and willing to share his vast knowledge when called upon by his family and friends.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife and companion, Marcia McAllister Caldwell; his mother Ruby (Brown) Caldwell of Bedford, Quebec; his children from his first marriage, Gary Lorne II and wife Amy of South Hero, James Christopher and girlfriend Robin Green and her daughter Logan of Morrisville, Tasha-Lee Caldwell of St. Albans; six grandsons, Joshua Caleb, James Christopher Dutch, Elliot Lansing, Lukas Lorne, Gary Lorne III, Tony Rufkahr; five sisters and their families, Beverly and Clifton Laduke of Stanbridge East, Que., Linda Chabot of Waterdown, Ont., Evelyn Caldwell of Bedford, Que., Julie and Jean Sequin of Philipsburg, Que., Mona and Gilles Labonte of Bedford, Quebec; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Claire Beerworth in 1959; his father James in 1967; his infant son Jeremy in 1970; and his brother Stanley in 1990.
Buddy was an everlasting optimist who, in his last years with us, devoted himself to being a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. The light of the earth grew dimmer on March 25. Dad, you will always be missed and lovingly remembered.
Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Thursday, March 28, 2002, from 6-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 29, 2002, at 11 a.m. at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery, St. Albans. Memorial contributions may be made in Buddy's memory to March of Dimes, c/o Linda Ward, 187 Pear St., St. Albans, Vt. 05478. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.
ELSIE A. GAGNON
ST. ALBANS/COLCHESTER - Elsie A. (Phippins) Gagnon, 87, a resident of this area for the past 11 years, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, March 25, 2002, at Roncalli Health Center. Her loving husband was at her side.
She was born in Talcville, N.Y., Jan. 19, 1915. On Aug. 2, 1969, she married Joseph A. Gagnon in Holy Cross Catholic Church in Colchester.
Elsie enjoyed fishing, dancing, and sewing. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Colchester and Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Albans.
In addition to her husband of over 31 years, Joseph, survivors include two sons, Charles and his wife, Mary Parmeter of Gainsvort, N.Y., and Joseph parmeter of Florida; a daughter, Barbara Mannon of Linn, Mo.; three stepsons, Joseph B. and Pam Gagnon of Waterbury Center, Dave Gagnon of Winooski, and Sam Gagnon of Georgia; a stepdaughter, Sharon and her husband Andy Warren of Tewksbury, Mass.; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Mallets Bay, with Father Roger Charbonneau officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Holy Cross Cemtery, Visitation will be on Tuesday from 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans.
E. LAURENT JETTE
SWANTON - E. Laurent Jette, 71, a resident of 221 County Road, died early Monday morning, March 25, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Jette was born in Saine Alexandre, Qiebec, April 25, 1930, the sone of the late Joseph and Irene (Monty) Jette. He attended schools in Canada and on March 26, 1951, married the former Gilberte B. Barabe, who survives him.
For the past 21 years Mr. Jette has owned and operated Superior Carpet Cleaning in Swanton. In his earlier years he owned and operated a dairy farm in the Sheldon Junction area. He was a parishioner of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Edmund of Canterbury Council #7669 in Swanton.
In addition to his wife Gilberte of 51 years, Mr. Jette leaves six sons and their wives, John and Sandy of Lowellm Mass., Marc and Winona of Berkshire, Raymond of Franklin, Robert and Lucy of Sheldon, Rene and LeeAnn of St. Albans, and Andrew and Catherine of Sheldon; four sisters and their husbands, Therese Berthiaume of Montreal, Laurette and Jean Guy L'Homme of Sainte Luc, Que., Cecile and Denis Samson of Iberville, Que., and marie Claire and Normand Desrenleau of Bedford, Que.; two brothers, Edward Jette of Berkshire and Gerard and his wife Denise of Drelighsburg, Que.; 14 grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lucille, and a brother, Rosaire.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, march 27, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada Street, Swanton. The pastor, Father John J. Meagher, SSE, will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will take place later in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon Springs. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, Tuesday, march 26, from 6 to 9 p.m.
WILMER E. CASTLE
FAIRFIELD - Wilmer Castle, 79, a lifelong resident of Fairfield, passed away peacefully at the Northwestern Medical Center on Saturday, March 232, 2002.
Wilmer was a lifelone farmer and was born in Fletcher on Nov. 11, 1922, the son of the late Claude and Angeline (Mayo) Castle.
He is survived by one brother, Leon Castle and his wife Agnes of St. Albans; one sister, Betty Marshall and her husband Norman of Highgate; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Pliney, Clayton and Gembert, and one sister, Ruth Meyer.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Kaye Beaudry, Robert Flynn and Paul Gregoire for the personal care shown during his illness. Personal thanks to Mary Bostwick and the nursing staff from Home Health, also Suzette Hudson in Northwestern Medical Center Intensive Care Unit.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 28, 2002, at 12:30 p.m. from the Church of the Rock in St. Albans. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home on Thursday morning from 10 to 12. Interment will follow in the Castle family lot in Bradley Cemetery in Fairfield.
RAYMOND T. BERNIER
MILTON - Raymond T. Bernier, 81, died Monday morning, march 25, 2002, at the home of his son, with his family by his side.
Raymond was born in Holyoke, Mass., on Aug. 1, 1920, the son of Theophile and Clara (Bessette) Bernier.
On Dec. 28, in 1943, he married the former Cecile Robidoux in Granby, Que.
Raymond was a WWII and Korean War veteran, serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a navigator and combat pilot based out of North Africa. He received the Air Medal with 12 oak leaf clusters. Upon returning home, Ray owned and operated farms in Franklin County. He served as the vice president of Standard Packaging and was the general manager of the Fonda Group in St. Albans. He was an inventor and held several patents on items and processes,
While on leave of absence from Fonda, Ray decided to return to training race horses. He enjoyed this so much that his successful career lasted over 35 years.
He was a former member of St. Clement's Catholic Church in Saratoga, N.Y., and St. Mary's in St. Albans. He was presently a member of St. Ann's in Milton.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in St. Albans, the American Legion Post #1, and the Saratoga Horsemen's Association.
He is survived by his children, Raymond Bernier and his wife Judy of Milton, with home he made his home, Louise Keenan and her husband John of Stanford, Conn., Susan Gregg and her husband Ben of Vienna, Va., Ann Mittlestadt and her friend John Hartigan of Bakersfield, Robert Bernier and his wife Darla of South Burlington, and Michael Bernier and his partner Alan Galindez of Milipitas, Calif. By his grandchildren LaLaneya, Lisa, David, Ray, Denise, Katie, Kathleen, Sara, Jesse, Alex, Kate and Liz. And by his great-grandchildren Savannah, Shaun, Allysa, Heather, Samantha, and Molly. He is also survived by his sister Claire Bernier of St. Hyacinthe, Que; and by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife Cecile, Ray was predeceased by his brothers George, Alfred, Jean Paul and Roger.
A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Wednesday, March 27, at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Milton. Burial will follow in the Holy Cross Cemetery in St. Albans. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Ave., Colchester, VT 05446. Visiting hours will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a wake service held at 8 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home in Milton.
STEALLA PEARL TATRO
MONTGOMERY CENTER - Stella Pearl Tatro, age 80, died Sunday, march 24, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
She was born Feb. 21, 1922, in Sheldon, the daughter of the late George and Cora (Arel) Tetreault.
She was a life-long resident of Montgomery Center and a member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church and the Ladies of St. Ann & Theresa Society. Stella enjoyed knitting, crocheting and taking long rides with Chee Whee and their dog Teddy.
She is lovingly survived by her daughter and her husband Donna and Dennis Ovitt of Bakersfield; her loving companion of 56 years Lawrence "Chee Wee" Pronto of Montgomery Center; six grandchildren, Anthony Ovitt of East Berkshire, Darren Ovitt and his wife Tina of Bakersfield, Jennifer Wright and her husband Aaron of Bakersfield, Bradley Ovitt and friend Tara L'Esperance, Barry Ovitt and his wife Debra of Fairfax, and Belinda Ovitt and her friend Jared Bessette of Fairfield' a foster granddaughter and Stella's caregiver, Brandy Bluto of Sheldon; eight great-grandchildren, Jason Jordan, Taylor, Tiffani, Tricia, Whitney, Miranda, and Mychala; a sister-in-law Ruth Tetreault of Springfield, Mass., several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arnold Tatro, in 1945, while in the service overseas during WWII; a grandson Chad Ovitt; two brothers, George Tetreault, Jr., and Merrill Tetreault; a sister, Connie Tetreault.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at three o'clock at St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Montgomery Center with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be in the spring in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Sheldon.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday evening from 6-9 at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.
