William R. Anderson

October 17, 2002

William R. Anderson, 62, passed away at his home in Duxbury on Tuesday, October 15, 2002. Born in Barre on August 8, 1940, he was the son of the late Rene and Daphne (Phillips) Anderson. On September 1, 1962, he married the former Margaret "Peg" Sabin in Waterbury.

Bill was a 1958 graduate of Waterbury High School and continued his education, attending Syracuse University and the University of Vermont. In 2001, he received a bachelor's degree in criminology from Phoenix University. He served his country during Vietnam with the U.S. Airforce.

Returning to Vermont in 1965, he worked in facilities at IBM for several years. Employed by the state of Vermont in several capacities, Bill embarked on a career with the Department of Corrections that spanned 22 years. He served as superintendent at the Woodstock Correctional Facility and most recently was appointed acting superintendent and coordinator of construction of the Springfield Correctional Facility.

Bill was a past president of the Middle Atlantic State Correctional Association. He served as a former Waterbury Village trustee, former member and captain of the Waterbury Village Volunteer Fire Department for 15 years, was a former zoning administrator for the town of Duxbury, a longtime Little League coach and Cub Scout leader and was a member of St. Andrew's Church in Waterbury. His leisure time was spent enjoying deer hunting, fishing, golf and was an avid reader.

Bill is survived by Peg Anderson of Duxbury; their children, Amy Anderson and her husband, Michael Merchant of Waterbury; Mark Anderson and his wife, Helessa of Duxbury; William Anderson and his wife, Jeanne of Duxbury; three grandchildren, Kay Marie Anderson, Stephen Anderson and Reece Anderson; a sister, Margaret Wilbur of South Burlington; a brother, Stephen Anderson of Richmond; nieces and nephews.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Waterbury on Saturday, October 19, at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Holy Cross cemetery, Duxbury. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vermont 05641.

Sarah Weller Simonds

May 1, 2003

Sarah Weller Simonds, Fayston, was born in Summit, New Jersey, February 12, 1915 and lived there until the family moved to their farm in Gladstone, New Jersey nineteen years later. Upon completion of the eighth grade at Kent Place School, she attended and graduated from Summit High School. She completed two years at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and then transferred to Cornell University, Ithaca, New York graduating with a B.A. in English in 1936.

Following college, she studied business at the Berkeley Secretarial School. She became a real estate broker working with her father in that business until her marriage. In 1941, at the beginning of World War II, she became private secretary to the contract manager of Titeflex Inc. a major defense subcontractor in the aircraft industry.

In 1948 after the war, she married Robert Sherman Simonds. With the exception of two periods when she worked for the office of the director of human relations at Yale University in New Haven, she became a full-time homemaker raising two children, Kathie (b 1949) and Bobby (b. 1951). After living several years in New Haven, Connecticut and Brooklyn, New York, the family moved to Long Island living in Levittown, Huntington Station and Westbury from 1954 through 1975. Sarah was active in church, P.T.A. and community work at this time.

When her husband retired from teaching Latin in Long Island, the couple moved to Fayston, Vermont. While there, she was a member of the Cornell Alumni Secondary Schools Committee and was actively concerned with environmental issues. In 1990, she and Bob moved to Buffalo in order to be closer to their children as Bob's health was declining.

After Bob died in 1991, she resided in Williamsville where she remained until her death on April 24, 2003.

Funeral services will be held from the Moretown United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 3, at 2 p.m. where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow in the North Fayston cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to a charity of one's choice. Local arrangements are in care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Billie Herron Goeltz

BILLIE HERRON GOELTZ

Billie Herron Goeltz, 74, died Friday, April 18, 2003, at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Billie was born April 13, 1929, in Pittsfield, Mass., the daughter of Annie Louise (Greenwood) Herron and William Andrew Herron.

She attended the New Canaan Country School in Connecticut, Foxhollow School in Lenox, Massachusetts and graduated from Chapin School in New York City in 1947. She earned her bachelor's degree from Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va., in 1951.

After college, she was the secretary for youth for Dwight D. Eisenhower's 1952 presidential election. After the campaign, she moved to Vermont where she met her husband, Paul Joseph Goeltz, while working for the Mt. Mans-field Co. They married Sept. 24, 1955.

Together, Billie and Paul began "Brook n' Pine" Lodge, which is now the home of the Lamoille Family Center. They also started "Brook n' Pine Farm" (now the Mountain View Equestrian Center) with Jim Jackson and Verner Reed. When they settled in Stowe, they started Misty Meadows Farm, Equestrian Camp and Ski Lodge, where Billie was "mom" to many children.

Billie will always be remembered for her outstanding horsemanship and her ability to share this passion for horses with kids. She was one of the founders of the Green Mountain Hounds, and rode at the head of the pack as hunts-man for many happy seasons. She was also a leader and participant in the Lamoille Riding and Driving Club.

During her many years in Stowe, Billie kept her connection with children. She drove a school bus and taxi for Russell's Taxi, and taught driver's education for Stowe High School, Lamoille Union and People's Academy. She later worked for Mountainside Condominiums and Trapp Family Lodge, guiding "Billie's tours."

Billie is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Grace (Goeltz) Ward, her husband, Jeffrey Frank Ward, and their four children, Meghan Kathleen Ward, Dana Brooke Ward, Heidi Louise Ward, all of Morrisville, and Desmond Henry Culcleasure of Elmore. She is also survived by her son, William Andrew Herron Goeltz, his wife, Alicia Lorraine (Borkman) Goeltz, and their four children, Ashleigh Lynn Shedd, Robert Joseph Shedd, Sierra Samantha Goeltz, and Hailey Katherine Goeltz, all of Johnson. Other survivors include her great-granddaughter, Celia Eunice Culcleasure of Elmore; and Billie's sister, Mary Priscilla Bowes of South Duxbury, Mass. Billie was predeceased by her husband, Paul, in 1975; and three of her sisters, Nancy Louise Pike, Joan Pugh, and Margaret Francis McCormick. In addition to her family, Billie leaves many dear friends, including MooMoo Wiessner of Stowe.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 26, in the Stowe Community Church, Main St., Stowe. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, at the home of Billie's daughter, on 84 Court St. in Morrisville. In lieu of flowers, Billie asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division for Ovarian Cancer, 13 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602. Arrangements are under the care of the Stafford Funeral Home in Stowe.

Edward Peterson Sr.

April 10, 2003

Edward J. Peterson Sr., 92, of Waterbury, passed away Monday, April 7, 2003 at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin where he had been a resident for the past four years. Born in Sterling, Massachusetts on July 2, 1910, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Johnson) Peterson.

As a young man, Ed worked as a cattle dealer trading at the Brighton Stockyards in Boston and was a farmer in Sterling, Massachusetts and Waterford, Vermont. Moving to Waterbury, he was employed at the Vermont State Hospital in the powerhouse.

He is surved by a son, Edward "Ted" Peterson of Leominster, Massachusetts, three grandchildren, Michael Peterson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; David Peterson of Leominster, Massachusetts and Robin Young of St. Johnsbury; four great-grandchildren and a dear friend, Marianna Towne of Waterbury.

Graveside services will be held in Oak Hill cemetery in Sterling, Massachusetts at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Robert P. Broadwell

April 10, 2003

Robert P. Broadwell, 87, a longtime resident of the Mad River Valley, passed away in the Central Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday, April 08, 2003.

Born in Duxbury on March 25, 1916, he was the son of Frank and Phoebe (Desroches) Broadwell. He married the former Euna Edgerly in October 1969.

Mr. Broadwell attended schools in Duxbury. As a young man, he worked on the family farm in Waitsfield. He later ran his own farm, logged, maple sugared and was a barn builder. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

A sister, Lillian Rivers of Williamstown; a brother, Walter Broadwell of Moretown; nieces and nephews survive him. Eight siblings predeceased him.

A funeral service will be held from the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Friday, April 11, at 10 a.m. There are no calling hours. Later interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Rowan Court Nursing Home Patient Activities Fund, Prospect Street, Barre Vermont 05641.

Anthony D. D'Amico

April 10, 2003

Anthony D. D'Amico, 28, formerly of Bristol, Connecticut, passed away unexpectedly at the Central Vermont Medical Center on Sunday, April 6, 2003.

Born in Bristol, Connecticut, on February 21, 1975, he was the son of Bruce and Sandra (Corbeille) D'Amico. On March 6, 1999, he married the former Shannon Hill in Bristol, Connecticut.

Tony was a graduate of Eastern High School in Bristol, Connecticut. He worked for the past seven years for Volkswagen of American where he was recognized as one of the top salesmen in the Northeast. For the past two months he was employed at Walker Volkswagen in Montpelier.

Tony particularly enjoyed spending time with his family and being outdoors. He had a strong sense of faith and a love for Jesus Christ. He was attending the Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly in Waterbury Center.

He is survived by his wife, Shannon, and their two children, Alexis and Brooke, all of Barre; his parents of Waterbury; a sister, Rebecca Oakes of Bristol, Connecticut; a brother, Jeffrey D'Amico of Wolcott; a paternal grandmother, Dolores D'Amico of Wolcott, Connecticut; a maternal grandmother, Lucille Corbeille of Sebastian, Florida; as well as a niece, Hannah Oakes and two nephews, Mason Hill and Matthew Oakes.

Funeral services were held from the Hunger Mountain Christian Assembly in Waterbury Center on Wednesday, April 9. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Hilltop Community Church Building Fund, 18 Academy Street, Bristol, Connecticut 06010.

William Andrew Mulconnery

April 10, 2003

William Andrew Mulconnery, 58, a resident of Lakewood Drive in West Swanton died early Monday morning, April 7, 2003, in the Vermont Respite House in Williston following an eight month battle with brain cancer.

Bill was born in East St. Louis, Illinois, February 28, 1945, the son of the late Andrew Walter and Dorothy (Donze) Mulconnery. In his earlier years he was active in the Boy Scouts of America and had been elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout. In 1968 he married his high school sweetheart, Gail Marie Hambleton, who survives him.

Prior to moving to the Swanton area in November of 2002, Bill lived in Barre from 1968 to 1988, and in Waitsfield from 1988 until their move to Swanton on Lake Champlain. While living in Barre he had been a very active member of the Barre Jaycee's.

Bill received his primary, secondary and college education in St. Louis and was a graduate of the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. For the past thirty-four years he has worked as a Registered Pharmacist in Vermont including the Allan Milne Pharmacy in Barre, Northfield Pharmacy in Northfield and The Drug Store in Waitsfield. He was also a member of the American and Vermont Pharmaceutical Associations. In addition to his pharmacy responsibilities, he and his wife Gail owned and operated The Weathertop Lodge, a bed and breakfast in Waitsfield.

In addition to his wife, Gail of thirty-five years, he leaves two daughters and their husbands, Kelly (Mulconnery) and Peter Gosselin of Bolton and Kerry (Mulconnery) and Michael Chaffee of Barre. Also surviving is a brother, Mike Mulconnery, and a sister, Mary Ann (Mulconnery) Neuner both of Illinois; four grandchildren, Ryan and Jordyn Gosselin and Kaitlyn and Tyler Chaffee; an aunt and uncle as well as several nieces and nephews. Bill also leaves his dog and buddy "Rhett."

At Bill's request he was cremated and a Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Williston Federated Church, located at the intersection of U.S. Route 2 and the North Williston Road. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Bill's memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston 05495.

Charles Abbott Phillips III

March 13, 2003

Charles Abbott Phillips III, 17, of Little Compton, Rhode Island, died on February 27, 2003. He will be remembered as a young man who loved the outdoors, plants and sports, and was widely admired for his talents and good humor.

Known as "Cap," he attended the Providence Country Day School. An excellent, versatile athlete, Cap had been selected the team's captain at the start of the season. PCD hockey games last Friday and Saturday drew large crowds of students, many wearing headbands bearing his name. There was a moment of silence in Cap's memory, his number 14 jersey remained on the bench for the games and his former PCD teammates all wore the number 14 on their helmets.

Cap "was very much an outdoors person. He loved gardening and plants and was absolutely fabulous at it. He had a great knowledge of horticulture."

He is survived by his parents, Abbott "Bud" Phillips, formerly of Fayston, and Andrea Phillips; his sister, Weatherly Phillips; half sisters, Krietta and Noel Phillips; and half brother, Billy Phillips.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 1, at 11 a.m. in the United Congregational Church, The Commons, Little Compton, Rhode Island.

William Otis Wallis

March 13, 2003

William Otis Wallis, 94, passed away at the home in which he was born, Thursday, March 6, 2003. Born on July 27, 1908, he was the sixth son of George Wilbur and Georgia Adele (Bragg) Wallis. June 15, 1943, he married the former Elsie Tryon in Proctor. Mrs. Wallis passed away February 1, 1993.

Otis, as he was fondly known in The Valley, graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1928. He attended the Vermont School of Agriculture in Randolph Center. He took over his father's farm in 1935. Otis spent his life on the farm, which his grandfather purchased in 1865. In later years, Otis sold the dairy operation and began a travel trailer business.

Like his father before him, Otis took an active part in municipal affairs, serving 53 years in a variety of positions.

He is survived by two nieces, Anne Wallis Bull of Waitsfield and Carolyn Mattson of Canton Center, Connecticut; a nephew, George W. Wallis, of Springfield, Illinois and nine grandnieces and grandnephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held from the Waitsfield Common cemetery later this summer at a date and time to be announced. Memorial gifts may be made to the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, Waitsfield, Vermont 05673. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home, Waterbury.

Edward William Lemery

March 13, 2003

Edward William Lemery, 73, of Waterbury Center, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 9, 2003. Born in Moretown on September 3, 1929, he was the son of the late Lucius E. and Myrle (Eddy) Lemery. On November 23, 1946, he married the former Pauline Ripley in Montpelier.

Ed attended the Rockbridge School in Moretown and Waterbury High School. He was employed for fourteen years at the Former Eastern Magnesia Talc Mine in Moretown. He later became a master plumber, working for Steele's Inc. in Waterbury and more recently for Local 693 in Colchester. He served his country during the Korean War from 1950-52 as a staff sergeant with the 43rd division, stationed in Germany.

His memberships included the VFW #10034, the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59; St. Andrew's Catholic Church and he was a 23-year member of the Waterbury Grange #237, all of Waterbury.

Ed's hobbies included hunting, fishing, reading, puttering in his garage and playing the fiddle. His natural gift for music was a treasure to his family throughout his life. In his early years, Ed played with local country music bands. More recently, he enjoyed playing with a group of his friends in Zephyrhills, Florida. He particularly enjoyed time with his family. For the past twelve winters, he and Pauline have enjoyed spending time at Arbor Oaks Park in Zephyrhills, Florida.

Ed is survived by his wife of 56 years, Pauline Lemery; their children, Marcia Sweet and her husband, Bernard of Duxbury; Edward Lemery Jr. and his wife Robin of Waterbury Center, Debra Rivers and her husband, Richard of Waitsfield; Dixie Kenyon and her husband, Gary of Waterbury Center; Monte Lemery and his wife, Donna, of Wilmington North Carolina and Penny Raymond and her husband, Patrick, of Waterbury; 19 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Lucille Morse of Montpelier and Marion Germana of Waterbury; 2 brothers, Lucien Lemery of Windsor and Richard Lemery Sr. of Waterbury; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Barbara Shonio; a brother, Roger Lemery, three infant children, Charles, Allan and Bruce and two grandsons, Jason Lemery and David Mitchell Kenyon.

A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Waterbury on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Wednesday from 7-9 p.m. Later interment will take place in the Waterbury Center cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Rd, Barre, Vermont 05641 or to Waterbury Grange #237, PO Box 134, Waterbury Center, Vermont 05677.
