Catherine Foley DeSorbo

Catherine Foley DeSorbo

Catherine Desorbo, 40, died Sunday, April 28, 2002 from a long-term illness. Catherine was first exposed to The Valley in the mid 1970s while on ski trips to Mad River Glen with her family. She loved skiing until health problems kept her off of the slopes. She graduated from Champlain College and permanently settled in Burlington.

Catherine was one of the first girls in her hometown of Parsippany, New Jersey to play on a boys' Little League baseball team. She was an accomplished cook and was always trying to cook up a new culinary delight.

In addition, she loved gardening and all of her cats.

Catherine is survived by her mother Joanne Foley of Fayston, brother Keith of Paulsho, Washington, and sister Joanne Kellermeyer of Littleton, Colorado, nieces and nephews: Katie, Keith, Kaitlyn and Kristofer, and her loving cat "Pooky."

She was predeceased by her brother William K. Fugee.

There will be a memorial service on Friday, May 3, at 5:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Snows in Waitsfield.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Northeastern Anorexia Foundation in Vernon, Vermont, 802-254-5556 or the Incontinentia Pigmenti Foundation at Mt. Sinai Hospital, New York, New York.

The Eternal Flame in Brattleboro is in charge of arrangements.

William M. Sherman

April 25, 2002

Bill Sherman, 64, of Stamford, Connecticut died of heart failure while skiing at Stowe on April 14, 2002. His connection with The Valley began in the late 1950's while a student at Dartmouth College.

Following his graduation from Columbia Law School and establishing his legal practice in his hometown of Stamford, he spent winter weekends in single's houses and in 1968 met Cherri Murphy while waiting in line for the Valley House chair.

They were married in their Warren home July 2, 1972. During the Winter Olympic Games 2002, Bill reunited with Stein Erickson at Deer Valley just before the Women's Aerials and reminisced about Sundays on Stein's Run.

Bill is survived by his wife and their five daughters: Timna of New York City, Liza and Amy of Stamford, Jill residing in Tahoe, California and Kate completing her undergraduate studies in London, England.

Bill loved The Valley, its landscape and people and cherished every moment in Warren Village and on the mountain. The family requests that donations made in his memory bene4fit the Warren Education Fund.

Declan H. Lyons

April 18, 2002

Declan H. Lyons, 24, died unexpectedly Friday, April 12, 2002.

He was born November 16, 1977 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the son of Dr. Thomas and Kolleen (Laughlin) Lyons.

He graduated from Xavier High School in Appleton, Wisconsin in 1996 and Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin in 2000, where he majored in philosophy and religion; he also lettered in soccer.

He moved to Vermont to pursue his passion for organic agriculture. Declan was deeply committed to environment and social justice issues. He loved gardening, music, cooking, snowboarding and his cat, "Sparrow." Declan was an accomplished poet and an avid naturalist.

He was anxiously awaiting the birth of his child in June.

He was a compassionate and loving soul and he will be sadly missed by his fiancee, Jodi Leslie, and their baby, of Montpelier; his parents, Dr. Thomas and Kolleen Lyons of Neenah, Wisconsin; a brother, Kieran Lyons and his fiancee, Kari Thornton of Denver, Colorado; two sisters, Meghan Lyons of Chicago, Illinois and Meredith Lyons of Boston, Massachusetts; an uncle and aunt, Tom and mary Jo Lee of Arlington Heights, Illinois and their children, Joe, Jeff (Kathy), Jason and Julie; and numerous friends from the Fox Cities, Ashland and Vermont.

He was predeceased by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Delores Lyons, his maternal grandparents, Harold and Florence Laughlin; and an uncle, Dennis Lyons.

Funeral services were held today, Thursday, April 18, 2002 in St. Margaret-Mary Catholic Church, Neenah, Wisconsin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Declan H. Lyons Memorial Fund, c/o Associated Bank, Attn: Tom Brown, 100 W. Wisconsin Avenue, Neenah, Wisconsin 54956.

Constance L. Ruiz

Constance L. Ruiz

Constance L. "Connie" Ruiz of Duxbury died Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at her home. She was a long time resident of Route 14 in Williamstown.

Born December 10, 1925 in Waitsfield, she was the daughter of Albert and Edythe (Brothers) La Vanway Sr. She graduated from the former Barre City Hospital School of Nursing in 1946 as a registered nurse.

Following graduation, she was a maternity ward nurse at the former Barre City Hospital and later the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin, retiring in September of 1982.

On Janurary 18, 1947, she married Floreal "Jim" Ruiz in Duxbury. They lived for many years in Williamstown. He died June 28, 1994. In September of that year, she moved to her present home.

She was a member of the Barre City Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association and was very generous to groups involved with medical care and research. She enjoyed family events and attending high school athletic activities.

She is survived by two sisters, Mavis Ricketts of Warren and Julia Denneler of Juliaetta, Idaho; three brothers, Albart La Vanway Jr. of Fayston, Roger La Vanway of Moretown and Dowen La Vanway of Waitsfield and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

A sister, Cathleen Dalley, and a brother, Clarence "Sonny" La Vanway, predeceased her.

A graveside service will be held at the convenience of her family at Hope cemetery in Barre. There are no calling hours.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Birthing Center, Central Vermont Medical Center, c/o Development Office, Box 547, Barre, Vermont 05641.

Services are under the direction of the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre.

Darrell Scrubb

April 4, 2002

Memorial service

A memorial service for Darrell Scrubb, who passed away December 18, 2001, will be held Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Founders Hall behind Our Lady of the Snows in Waitsfield.

Formerly a resident of New Jersey, Scrubb resided the last four years of his life in Vermont.

He leaves his mother Rose Morin and stepfather, John Morin of Vermont, his father, Reuben Scrubb of New Jersey; two brothers, Bryan Scrubb of Vermont and Walter Scrubb of New Jersey; three sisters, Robin Scrubb-Hobby and Illora Reynolds, both of New Jersey and Evelyn Parrilla of Virginia; two very close friends, Bruce Williams of Michigan, who Darrell thought of as a brother, and John Banks of North Carolina.

He is also survived by his nieces, nephews, relatives and other loved ones. He will be greatly missed by all. Services will be held by the Mad River Valley Alliance Church with Pastor Allen Wollcott of Richmond and Pastor E.M.Smith of Massachusetts officiating.

Patricia Susan Wortman

Patricia Susan Wortman, 49, of Joyce's View Road, Warren, passed away surrounded by her family and friends at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Thursday, March 28, 2002. Born in Corinth, New York on November 11, 1952, she was the daughter of Vincent and Elizabeth (Hartman) Regan.

Patricia grew up in Corinth, New York and was a 1970 graduate of Corinth Central High School. Studying nutrition at Cobleskill (New York) Community College, she later moved to Eagles Nest, New Mexico where she was employed at the Angel Fire Ski Resort for several years. In 1988, Patricia came to the Mad River Valley and settled in Warren where she worked for 12 years at the Sugarbush Daycare Center caring for both Valley children and those of guests staying at the resort.

For the past two years, she was a para-educator in the special education department at Harwood Union High School in Duxbury. Her leisure time was spent enjoying reading and appreciating a variety of music.

Patricia is survived by her parents of Corinth New York; her two sons, Andrew and Jerome Wortman of Warren; two brothers, Frank Regan and his wife, Charlotte Baltus, of Rochester New York and James Regan and his wife, Juanita, of Corinth, New York; as well as her many close and deeply appreciated friends.

A celebration of Patricia's life will be held from the Warren United Church on Friday, April 5, 2002 at 4:30 p.m. with a potluck dinner to follow in the Warren Town Hall. Her family requests that flowers be omitted. Memorial gifts would be appreciated to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Rd, Barre, Vermont 05641.

Arrangements are in care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Michael Clifford Murphy

March 7, 2002

Michael Clifford Murphy, 58, passed away at his home in Northfield Monday, February 25, 2002, after a couragous fight against cancer.

He was born May 7, 1943 in Burlington, the eldest son of Skip and Trudy Murphy. He grew up in Moretown. He graduated from Montpelier High School and later earned three degrees at the University of Vermont, a bachelor of science, a master's of science in mechanical engineering and a Ph.D. While still at UVM, he took a leave of absence to earn his wings at Parris Air Force Base.

He married Phyliss Duell on February 13, 1965. They had two sons, George and Sean.

He was a member of the Vermont National Guard for over 30 years and retired as a colonel. He served as a professor at Norwich University where he taught computer engineering and mechanical engineering from 1973 until his death.

He is survived by his wife, his two sons, three grandchildren, his mother, a brother James, and a sister, Mary Murphy Blake, as well as many cousins, in-laws, aunts, uncles and friends.

The funeral was held at the White Chapel at Norwich Univeersity. Burial will be held in the spring at Mountain View cemetery in Moretown.

Gwendolyn "Peg" Cannon

Gwendolyn D. "Peg" Cannon, 90, passed away at the Gifford Medical Center in Randolph on Sunday, September 29, 2002.

Graveside committal services will be held from the Warren Village cemetery on Friday, October 11, 2002 at 2:00 p.m.

The family requests that flowers be omitted, rather memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, Massachusestts 01701-4688 or to the Roxbury Senior Center, PO Box 53, Roxbury, Vermont 05669-0053.

Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Ernest Sheldon Kuegel Sr.

October 3, 2002

Ernest Sheldon Kuegel Sr. of Fayston, formerly of Hyde Park and Wrentham, passed away September 28, 2002.

He was the beloved husband of Betty Linnea (Nordstrom) Kuegel; loving father of Keith Walter Kuegel and his wife Susan of Fayston, and the late Ernest Sheldon Kuegel Jr.; devoted grandfather of Erik Joseph Kuegel of Vermont, who was an absolute joy in his life; brother of Anne Kuegel and Walter Kuegel both of Roslindale and the late Florence C. Morancy and Gigi Kuegel; son of the late Florence L. (Wilson) and Ernest L. Kuegel.

Visiting hours were be held on Tuesday, October 1. Funeral service and interment will be private.

Ernie worked for Walter Baker, Domino Sugar, and recently retired in June from Robeck Management. In lieu of flowers, donations in Ernie's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Bronislaus "Ben" Stabach

October 3, 2002

Bronislaus "Ben" Stabach, 69, passed away on September 26, 2002 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor, Maine.

He was born on September 23, 1933 in Meriden, Connecticut, the son of Stanislav Stabach and Eleanora Gogola Stabach.

He was raised in Meriden, Connecticut where he attended local schools. After graduating from Wilcox Technical School, he began his lifetime career in carpentry. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. His work took him and his family to St. Thomas USVI in 1969 and then to Fayston, Vermont where he lived and worked for over 20 years.

The Mad River Valley area was developing as a major ski destination when he moved to Fayston. Among the projects he supervised were the construction of Drumley's Townhouses, The Bridges Resort, The Valley Professional Center, and South Village.

Some of his fondest memories included skiing and hunting in the beautiful hills surrounding The Valley and catching brook trout in the Mad River.

In 1993, he moved to Boothbay, Maine, working part-time at the Boothbay Region YMCA, where he made many friends and continued his love for fishing. Just weeks before his death he enjoyed a fishing trip with some old friends from Vermont. As usual, he caught the first fish. He was a people person who enjoyed meeting new people, socializing, and telling stories.

He was predeceased by his parents, his sister Leocadia "Lee" Retallack, brothers: Frank Stabach, Louis Stabach, Joseph Stabach, and Eugene "Charlie" Stabach.
