Cindy L. Kovanic
January 24, 2002
Cindy L. Kovanic, 55, of Prickly Mountain Road in Warren, passed away at her home following a valiant battle with cancer on Wednesday, January 16, 2002. Born in Rockford, Illinois on August 1, 1946. She was the daughter of John Powelson and the late Corrine (Morgan) Powelson. On July 31, 1976, she married
Ronald C. Kovanic in Crested Butte, Colorado.
Cindy was a 1964 graduate of Fort Collins (Colorado) High School and continued her education, studying accounting at Colorado State University. Moving to southern California, she worked as an accountant in the entertainment business, relocating to Denver, Colorado, when the company she was with moved there.
Accepting a position at Crested Butte ski area, Cindy moved there and met her future husband, Ron.
In 1987, they came to Warren where they have raised their family and become part of the fabric of the community in the Mad River Valley. Employed as a teller at the Chittenden Bank in Waitsfield, she later worked as an accountant at S.G. Phillips Co. in Waitsfield and the past few years, worked with seasonal rentals for Mill Brook Real Estate. Her leisure time was spent enjoying her son's athletic events, gardening and yard work, refinishing furniture and traveling.
Cindy is survived by her husband, Ron; their sons, Seth Kovanic of Fort Collins, Colorado, and Joshua Kovanic of Warren; her father of Fort Collins, Colorado; two sisters, Chris Powelson of Windsor, Colorado and Amy Lee of Santa Rosa, California; a brother, Matt Powelson of Denver, Colorado; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A gathering celebrating Cindy's life will be held from the Round Barn Farm Inn, East Warren Road, Waitsfield on Saturday, January 26, at 2:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, Vermont 05641, or to the Cancer Research Fund, c/o Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Attn: Michelle Clark, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03756. MARY KATHRYN WELCH
January 17, 2002
Mary Kathryn Welch, 94, passed away at her Moretown home on Wednesday, January 9, 2002. Born in Duxbury on February 18, 1907, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Mabel (Collins) Welch.
Mary graduated in 1926 from Waterbury High School and received her teaching certificate from the former Bristol Normal School. She was an educator for the town of Duxbury at the schools located on Crossett Hill and Scrabble Hill and later at the Flanagan School in Moretown. Helping the war effort during WWII, Mary worked as a secretary in Stratford, Connecticut for an aircraft company. She later was employed by the Ohio Rubber Co. until her retirement.
Moving to Waterbury four years ago, she has made her home for the past year with her niece, Rhoda Wimble, in Moretown.
Mary is survived by two sisters, Bernice McDonald of Duxbury and Mayville Gonyaw of Greensboro Bend; a brother, Carl Welch of Piermont, New Hampshire, as well as several nieces and nephews. Four brothers, Ferd Welch, James Welch, Gerald Welch, and Howard Welch predeceased her.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Waterbury on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Entombment will be in Hope cemetery Vault, Waterbury, pending spring interment in Holy Cross cemetery in Duxbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, may be made to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre 05641. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.
WENDELL “IKE” CHARLES FOLSOM

Wendell "Ike" Charles Folsom, 82, a lifelong resident of the Mad River Valley, passed away at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center on Wednesday, January 2, 2002. Born in Waitsfield on January 23, 1919, he was the son of the late Charles and May (Boyce) Folsom. On March 21, 1914, he married
the former Gertrude "Trudy" Burbank in Swanton.
Ike attended schools in Waitsfield and graduated valedictorian from Vermont Technical College in Randolph in 1937. Working as a milk tester for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association for several years, Ike returned to operate the family farm in Waitsfield, expanding in 1945 when he purchased the Chet Dana farm. In 1965, he sold the farm on the East Warren Road to Great Lakes Carbon Corporation, staying on as general manager until his retirement in 1984.
Well known in the Mad River Valley for his good nature, sense of humor and warm smile, Ike was always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. Active in his community, he served the town of Waitsfield as a member of the school board, planning commission and as a lister. His memberships included the Waitsfield United Church of Christ, the Mad River Lodge #77 F&AM, where he served as a past Master, and the Couples Club of Waitsfield. An avid skier at Sugarbush and golfer at Blush Hill Country Club in Waterbury, he also enjoyed going to deer camp, playing cards and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Trudy, of Waitsfield; their children, Pat Folsom of Colchester, Gordie D. Folsom of Lincoln, Peg Folsom and her husband Grant Kennedy of Brampton, Ontario, Lind Eldredge of Waterbury and Robin Brackett and her husband Nick of Waitsfield; 13 grandchildren, Sharon Yandow, Roger Werpy Jr., Tony Folsom, Stephanie Boschee, Sarah Folsom, Sean Folsom, Todd Harrington, Jill Kennedy, David Kennedy, Dan Eldredge, Ben Eldredge, Joshua Brackett and Morgan Brackett; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, G. Claron Folsom of Newport; nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Doris Schreiber and Pauline Straw, and two brothers Guy Folsom and Francis Folsom.
A celebration of Ike's life was held from the Waitsfield United Church of Christ on Saturday, January 5, 2002 at 1:00 p.m. where a reception followed in the dining room. Spring inurnment will take place in the family lot at the North Fayston cemetery.

KENNETH HAROLD AUSTIN

Kenneth Harold Austin, 86, of Moretown, passed away at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Thursday, January 3, 2002. Born in Moretown on November 21, 1915, he was the son of the late Harold E. and Nellie (Griffith) Austin. On April 8, 1949, he married
the former Norma Woodard in Moretown.
Ken attended Moretown schools and was a 1934 graduate of the former Montpelier Seminary. Employed for over 20 years by Ward Lumber Co. of Moretown, he later worked for 14 years at the Sugarbush ski area in Warren. A well-known and talented guitarist, Ken was a member of the Green Mountain Rangers Band and the Green Mountain Old Timers Band, which played for round and square dances throughout the central Vermont area for many years.
His memberships included the Moretown United Methodist Church and the Middlesex Grange. His leisure time was spent enjoying flower and vegetable gardening, cooking and fishing.
Ken is survived by his wife of 52 years, Norma Austin of Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center; their son Mark Kenneth Austin of St. Albans; three grandsons and one granddaughter; 11 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A sister, Doris E. Bartlett, and two brothers, Theron E. Austin and Raymond E. Austin, predeceased him.
Graveside inurnment services will be held from the Mountain View cemetery in Moretown this spring at a date and time to be announced. Kenneth Erwin Lindner

Kenneth Erwin Lindner, 18, of Waterbury Center passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2002 while driving home to Vermont from his freshman year at Northern Arizona University. Kenny was born June 23, 1983 and prior to college, lived his entire life in Waterbury.
Kenny attended Waterbury Elementary School and graduated from Harwood Union High School in the class of 2001. As a boy, he was active in Cub Scout Pack #711 and the Little League where his mom was his coach.
Kenny was a very gifted artist with pencil and paper in addition to being an extremely talented writer. As a teenager, he was never far from his music collection of CDs. In high school, he retired his skis and became a self-taught expert snowboarder who spent countless hours at Stowe.
He was rushing to get home in the hope of hiking Mt. Mansfield and finding the last bits of this season's snow to capture a final few short runs down the mountain.
Following a period of volunteering in construction with Central Vermont Habitat for Humanity, he decided on a career in construction engineering and management. Following a visit to NAU last June, he decided to attend college there in Flagstaff, Arizona. While in college, he explored all of the surrounding hiking and mountain biking trails.
Kenny is survived by his parents, Brian and Ann Lindner of Waterbury Center, and by his maternal grandfather Kenneth Allen of Berlin, and paternal grandmother, Florence Lindner of Waterbury. Kenny leaves many aunts, uncles, and cousins plus a large contingent of close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 8, in the Mt. Mansfield Base Lodge at the Stowe Mountain Resort.

Ethel Sands

Ethel Sands, Waitsfield, passed away at age 98, on May 21 2002.
She was born May 30, 1903, in Brookline, Massachusetts. She was raised and attended school, in Brookline. She lived next door to the Kennedy family and graduated from Boston University Art School in 1925.
She enjoyed visiting family friends in New Hampshire and played with Admiral Byrd's dog, "Chinook," who stayed there in-between trips to Antarctica.
She married
and raised her sons, Ronald and David. She still painted varying styles of artwork. Throughout her life she traveled to most of the states and to Canada. She lived in Massachusetts, Colorado and California. She enjoyed seeing new places.
While living in San Francisco, she made wonderful rugs on a loom, and pottery, using her art background for design. She also traveled to France on the Queen Mary to visit her son, who was in the army, stationed in Germany. They traveled throughout France, Switzerland and Italy.
Survivors include her son Ronald, of Williamstown, son David, his wife Yuri, and grandsons Michael and David, all of San Francisco, California.
There will be no funeral services.
Earlyn Dean

Earlyn Eva Dean, a longtime resident of Grand Isle, Vermont, recent resident of Singer Island, Florida and longtime Mad River Glen skier, died unexpectedly at her winter home in Florida on April 1, 2002.
She was born in Calgary, Alberta and was the daughter of Kingsley Dean and the late Helen Dean. She graduated from the University of Alberta and from the University of Toronto. She was a prominent businesswoman, serving as an officer and director of Superior Technical Ceramics in St. Albans, Vermont for many years, along with Theodore Church, her close friend and former husband.
Earlyn also owned and operated Excalibur Laboratories in Burlington, Vermont with her longtime friend James Whitlock. An accomplished and talented woman, she devoted much of her business life to building two successful companies. She served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Manufacturers and attended legislative events in support of her leadership role in the small business manufacturing industry, as well as being a longtime member of the American Alpine Club.
Earlyn was a fascinating woman, known for her incredible intellect, spirit of adventure, love of life, children and the great outdoors. Her favorite days were spent relaxing by Lake Champlain. She always made time for her closest friends and family around the world, and often traveled abroad to places like Nepal and Africa for the adventure of climbing mountains and exploring the worlds wonders.
A woman of distinction, she leaves behind a legacy of caring and strength. She was respected and loved by many. Earlyn is survived by her father Kingsley Dean, her sister Myrtle Gordon, nieces and nephews, as well as many other friends across the United States and Canada.
A memorial service will be held on May 28, 2002 at St. Luke's Episcopal Parish in St. Albans, Vermont at 4:00 p.m. Following the service family and friends are invited to the home of Theodore Church, 4306 Georgia Shore Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Planned Parenthood of Vermont or the Mohonk Preserve of New Palz, New York.
Reba K. Hall

Reba Kinsley Hall, longtime resident of Fayston, died unexpectedly on May 9, 2002, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin at the age of 87.
Born in Lowell on August 31, 1914, Reba was the first daughter of F. Guy Kinsley and Sybil (Warren) Kinsley. She attended Lowell primary schools until the family moved to Montpelier where she continued her studies at Montpelier Seminary. There she won a UVM scholarship, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1937.
While studying at UVM, she worked for room and board in the home of classics Professor Basset where she learned to love interesting conversation, especially about Vermont history, and credited the family with a good deal of her education.
Reba later worked in the office of the treasurer of Union Mutual Insurance Company in Montpelier, then moved to Fayston with her husband Alexander Hall, who predeceased her.
In Fayston, Reba quickly became active as town historian, tax assessor, and real estate agent. She was often in demand and gave willingly of her time and enthusiasm for historical and genealogical research, contributing significantly to the soon to be published Civil War diary biography of her grandfather, Rufus Kinsley of Lowell.
She harbored an intense love for her home state of Vermont and wanted most to pass down its heritage to her heirs.
Reba is survived by a brother-in-law, James Rikert of Sharon; several nephews and nieces, William Kinsley of Montreal; Paul Kinsley of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; James Rikert of Royalton; Patsy Rikert Sirois of Springfield, New Hampshire; Janet Kinsley Sanchez of Colorado; Patsy Kinsely Packard of Bar Mills, Maine; five grandnephews and eight grandnieces, two great-grand nephews and six great-grand nieces.
A memorial service was held May 14, 2002 at Reba's home at 1203 Center Fayston Road, Fayston. An alternative site will be the United Church of Christ, Route 100, Waitsfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to Vermont Historical Society, 109 State Street, Montpelier 05609.

Gertrude G. Viens

Gertrude G. Viens, 86, formerly of Waitsfield and Moretown, died May 10, 2002 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center in Berlin.
She was born April 25, 1916, the daughter of Ernest Emilian and Diana Marie (Masse) Choinard. She was educated in the Moretown schools.
She married
Leopold (Paul) Viens October 24, 1933 in Moretown. Together they owned and operated dairy farms in Moretown and Waitsfield. He died June 30, 1964.
Mrs. Viens was a member of St. Patrick's and Our Lady of the Snows Catholic churches.
Survivors include a daughter Pauline Bombard of Barre; five sons, Bernard Viens of Waitsfield, Richard Viens of Shelton, Connecticut, David Viens of Redwood, New York, Michael Viens of Essex Junction, and Peter Viens of Waitsfield; four sisters, Gabrielle Miles of Zephyrhills, Florida, Lucille Wisniewski of Dade City, Florida, Ernestine Booth of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts, and Mary Minch of Colchester; two brothers, Herve Chouinard of Orleans and Roger Chouinard of Orange, Massachusetts; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
A funeral mass was held May 14 at St. Patrick's Church in Moretown. Burial was at Mountain View cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center Activities Fund, 98 Hospitality Drive, Barre, 05641.
