Anna L. Boedecker
GUILFORD - Anna L. Boedecker, 84, died Dec. 1, 2003, at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 1, 1919, in New Jersey, the daughter of Rudolph and Marie (Furst) Boedecker.
She was raised and educated in New York and graduated from St. Michael's High School in New York City.
She worked as a bookkeeper for the Seagrams Co. in New York for many years prior to moving to Vermont.
She later worked in Bellows Falls, White River Junction, locally for DJ's, and for Secretarial Services in Guilford.
Ms. Boedecker was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Brattleboro.
She enjoyed needlework.
Survivors include a sister, Frances Welton of Youngsville, N.Y.; three nieces and two nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Madeline Butler.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Burial will follow in St. Michael's Parish cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

Dennis M. Bird
WATERVLIET, N.Y. - Dennis M. Bird, 54, died Dec. 2, 2003, at St. Peter's Hospice Inn in Albany.
He was born Nov. 9, 1949, in Albany, the son of Leonard and Andrea (Palladino) Bird.
He received his early education in Albany, and later received his bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose and his MPA from Russell Sage College.
He worked at the testing division in the New York State Department of Civil Service.
Mr. Bird was a member of St. Brigid's Catholic Church in Watervliet, where he also served as a Eucharistic minister and lector.
He was a member of the Cursillo Men's Weekend Group and the REC Prison Ministry Team.
Survivors include his wife, Beth (Noonan) Bird, a daughter, Katelyn Bird and a son, Jonathan Bird, all of Watervliet; three sisters, Patricia Allen and Kelly Bird, both of Albany and Gloria Heydary of Glenmont; a brother, Greg Bird of North Bennington; 12 nieces and nephews; an aunt and uncle and several cousins.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home in Watervliet, and continue with the celebration of Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Brigid's Church.
Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the educational fund of Katelyn Elizabeth and Jonathan Dennis Bird, in care of Fleet Bank, 1400 Second Ave., Watervliet, 12189.
Ernestine A. Beals
BRATTLEBORO - The funeral Mass for Ernestine A. Beals will be celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis McMahon officiating.
Burial will follow in Christ Church cemetery in Guilford.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.

Shelby A. Thereault Rites
BRATTLEBORO - A prayer service for Shelby Ann Thereault, who died Nov. 28, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
The Rev. Ronald Getchell, pastor, officiated.
Eulogy was given by Lisa Stockwell, Mrs. Thereault's sister.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.
John Conrad Hartnett
SOUTH BURLINGTON - John Conrad Hartnett, died December 2, 2003, at Pillsbury Manor in South Burlington, Vermont.
John was born in Astoria, Long Island, New York, February 2, 1922.
He was the son of William F. and Applonia R. (Fisher) Hartnett.
He is survived by his three daughters, Mary Hartnett Abbott of Hanover, New Hampshire and her partner Russ Bartlett, Donna Hartnett Bradley Dion of Ormond Beach, Florida and her husband James, and Johnette Hartnett of Washington, D.C.; four grandchildren, Kristen Abbott Shedd and her husband Karl Shedd, Kate Bradley, Shannon Bradley, Thomas Abbott and his wife Lisa; a great-granddaughter, Madeline Shedd; and his brother, William Hartnett of Chicago, Ill.
He was predeceased by his wife, Irene Victoria in 1999; his son, John Peter in 1965; and three grandchildren, David John, John Peter and Johnette Terese in 1983.
Dr. Hartnett had a teaching and research career for more than 50 years as a member of the biology faculty at St. Michael's College in Colchester, Vt., where he retired a Professor Emeritus in 1987.
Dr. Hartnett received a BS in Biology, Magna Cum Laude from St. Michael's College in 1943, a Master's in Science in 1947 and a Ph.D. in 1963 in Biochemistry from the University of Vermont.
Over the course of his teaching and research career, Dr. Hartnett isolated a new enzyme from the porcine pancreas, taught pre-clinical science courses for the Fanny Allen Hospital School of Nursing, coordinated and team taught one of the first graduate programs in human sexuality offered for teachers in Vermont, participated in the biology test construction committee for the National Dental Aptitude Test and Optometry Aptitude Test, and received support for his ongoing research on the porcine pancreas from the National Science Foundation and the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Hartnett published in the fields of biochemistry, laboratory science education and on the history of pharmacy and therapeutics in the 19th century.
He was an abstractor for Chem Abstracts for more than 10 years, and was a reviewer for numerous science books and films.
Dr. Hartnett was an active member of various professional and honorary scientific and educational societies over his lifetime.
He served on various community and state boards and committees dedicated to advocacy and service for people with developmental disabilities in Vermont.
Visiting hours will be held at the Ready Funeral Home, South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 5, 2003.
On Saturday, December 6, 2003, at 10 a.m., a Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated at the Chapel of St. Michael the Archangel with interment in St. Joseph's cemetery.

Harley Rice Rites
ORWELL - The funeral service for Harley Rice, who died Nov. 30, 2003, was held Wednesday at the Sanderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Randy Rice officiating.
Burial followed in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham.
The American Legion of Middlebury provided military honors.
Bearers were Tim Deering, James Robideau, Troy LaPell, Myles Rice, Steve Brileya and Fred Russell.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury.
