Esther A. Potter

NORTH POMFRET - Esther A. Potter, 79, died Dec. 3, 2003, at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.

She was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Tunbridge, the daughter of Charles and Flora (Stender) Morrill.

She attended school in South Royalton.

She married Raymond Potter on June 15, 1950, and together they purchased the family farm in North Pomfret, Sunnyside Farm, where they worked and lived for the past 53 years. In earlier years, she had worked at Dewey Mills in Quechee.

Mrs. Potter enjoyed cooking.

Survivors include her husband of North Pomfret; two sons, Dennis Potter of North Pomfret and Etna, N.H., and Wayne Potter of White River Junction; a daughter, Sheila Murray of North Pomfret; two sisters, Arlene Dodge of Royalton and Hazel Ballou of South Royalton; a brother, Nam Morrill of Sharon; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a brother, Max Morrill; and a sister, Irene White.

The funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the North Pomfret Congregational Church with the Rev. Sami McRae officiating. Burial will follow in Hewittville cemetery in North Pomfret.

Calling hours will be held Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Pomfret Fast Squad, P.O. Box 322, North Pomfret, 05053.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

Dr. William T. Mosenthal

NORWICH - Dr. William Talbot Mosenthal died Nov. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a long illness.

He was born in 1916 in New York City.

He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1938, and after medical training at Cornell and residency, he served in the Army Medical Corps, caring for the wounded on Iwo Jima and other islands in the Pacific Theater.

After military service he returned to Dartmouth as a surgeon and instructor at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital and Dartmouth Medical School, and as a surgical consultant at the Veterans Administration Hospital. He retired from practicing surgery in 1981. Dr. Mosenthal then took on a second career teaching full-time as a professor of anatomy and clinical surgery, retiring in 2002 at the age of 85.

Dr. Mosenthal originated the concept of the intensive care unit in the United States. The first such unit was established at Mary Hitchcock in 1955, and the current ICU at DHMC bears his name.

He was a three-time recipient of the Basic Science Teaching Award, and the annual Mosenthal Golf Tournament was established in 1985 to raise funds for David's House.

He enjoyed golf and was a 61-year member of Hanover Country Club. He played squash until the age of 83, and was a Boston Red Sox fan. Dr. Mosenthal also enjoyed gardening, music, stamp collecting, beekeeping, and model boat and airplane construction.

Survivors include four sons, Bill of Ashburn, Va., Jim of Burlington, Dick of Norwich and Tom of White River Junction; a daughter, Kathy of Londonderry; a brother, Walter; three sisters, his twin Elizabeth Warner, Mary Boone and Anne Thron; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Hastings; a brother, Andreae; and a sister, Lucy Smith.

The memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rollins Chapel at Dartmouth College. A reception will follow in the ground floor of Fairchild Tower Lobby, directly behind Rollins Chapel.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Mosenthal Endowment Fund, a fellowship for excellence in teaching anatomy at Dartmouth Medical School, Dartmouth Medical School Development Office, 1 Medical Center Drive, Lebanon, N.H., 03756.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home in Hanover, N.H.

Mildred C. Wilkins

LUDLOW - Mildred C. Wilkins, 86, died Dec. 3, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.

William F. Baker

William Francis Baker of Troy, N.Y., died December 1, 2003, at age 90 at home in Londonderry, Vermont.

He was the devoted husband of Helen (nee Foley). Beloved father of Ellen Thorner (Peter), and Susan Carlucci (Michael) and Edward T. (Geraldine). Loving grandfather of James, William, John, Susan, Christine and Laura Ann. Cherished great-grandfather of Nathan and Kade and great-uncle to many nieces and nephews.

The son of the late James F. and Margaret Dyer Baker, he was educated at the LaSalle Institute in Troy and graduated from Manhattan College. Mr. Baker was the Controller and Director of Corporate Development for Cluett Peabody and Company. He retired in 1976.

He was the brother of the late Ann Flack and the late James F. and Edward B. (Jean) who lived in Alabama.

Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 6, at Adams & Kenney Funeral Home, 35 Depot Street, Chester, Vermont. The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, at St. Joseph's Chapel in Londonderry, Vermont. Memorials may be made to the Mountain Valley Medical Center in Londonderry and the Vermont Visiting Nurses Association of Chester, whose care and devotion were vital in helping us provide a loving and peaceful environment for him over these past few years.

Charles H. McLaughlin

MANCHESTER - Charles Henry McLaughlin, 89, died Dec. 2, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center following a long illness.

He was born April 30, 1914, in East Poultney, the son of William and Mabel (Moyer) McLaughlin.

He attended local schools.

He worked at Sweezey Lumber Mill in Manchester for many years. He also worked for and was active in the Manchester Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. McLaughlin was a member of the Manchester Eagles Club.

He was an avid card player and baseball fan.

Survivors include two daughters, Virginia Weeks of Danby and Barbara Rockwell of Dawsonville, Ga.; two sisters, Florence Marchaland and Dorothy French, both of Poultney; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Francis McLaughlin; a brother, Dewese McLaughlin; and a sister, Leona Peacott.

The memorial service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester. The Rev. John Mitchell, pastor of the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester, will officiate.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Manchester VFW, in care of the Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, 05255.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.

Richard C. Blake

SHAFTSBURY - Richard Charles Blake, 80, died Dec. 2, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness.

He was born Sept. 3, 1923, in Vienna, Austria, the son of Adolf and Klara (Strupp) Schwarz.

He received his education in Vienna and England, his bachelor's degree from the City College of New York, and his master's degree in psychology from the University of Michigan.

He moved to Vermont in 1956 and began teaching at Bennington College, and served as dean of Bennington College for several terms. He also taught during sabbaticals at Williams College and the University of Michigan.

Mr. Blake was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II, and became a U.S. citizen through his wartime service.

He married Joan Waltrich in 1959 in Bennington. She died in 2002.

He was an avid reader, conservationist, naturalist and a member of Bat Conservatory International. He enjoyed opera, taking long walks and bicycling.

Survivors include a daughter, Jodi Courtney of Medway, Mass.

There will be no services. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions may be made to Bat Conservatory International, in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.

Earl F. Tripp

BENNINGTON - Earl F. Tripp, 84, died Dec. 3, 2003, at Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington.

He was born June 14, 1919, in Bennington, the son of Mordicia and Cassie (Wood) Tripp.

He graduated from Bennington High School.

He married Ruth Wilkins in Bennington. She died in 2002.

Mr. Tripp worked at Empire Market in Bennington and later at the BenMont Paper Co.

He was a member and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1861 and a member of American Legion Post 13.

He enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include two daughters, Roseann Beauchamp of Richmond, Mass., and Patricia Zukowsky of Windsor Locks, Conn.; a son, Eugene Tripp of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Elaine Prentiss of Bennington; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Raymond Tripp and Howard Tripp; and four sisters, Hazel Gorman, Mildred Phillips, Gladys Knapp and Sarah Tripp.

The funeral service will be held Friday at noon at All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Burial will follow in Vermont Veterans War Memorial cemetery in Bennington.

Friends may call Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at All Faiths Chapel.

Members of the following organizations are asked to meet at the Vermont Veterans Home Friday to conduct services: Fraternal Order of Eagles 1861 at 11 a.m. and American Legion Post 13 at 11:30 a.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to the activities fund at the Vermont Veterans Home, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
