Harold Herbert Conant Sr.

SALISBURY - Harold Herbert Conant Sr., age 95, died Friday, December 5, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury.

Harold, known to everyone as "Joe," was born on May 2, 1908, in Salisbury, Vt. He was the third of four children of Charles H. Conant and Mabel (Brassaw) Conant. With his family's roots in Salisbury dating back to before 1806, Joe represented one generation of a long line of Conants who lived there.

Joe held various jobs throughout his life, including those of carpenter, handyman and nature guide. Indeed, he was at home in nature and loved to hunt and fish. Independent, roguishly handsome and always well-dressed, he had a wry, contagious sense of humor. Up until the very end he continued to drive his black and grey Ford pickup truck through town to do errands in the early hours of the day. The longest living, longest attending participant of Project Independence, an adult day home in Middlebury, Joe attended faithfully for 12 years and derived much comfort from the company and care he found there.

Joe is survived by two sons, Harold H. Conant Jr. and Norbert Conant; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his former wife, Millicent Wimett Conant in 1990; his daughter, Maxine Conant Desautels in 1992; his son, Clifton Conant in 1998; and all of his brothers and sisters. His companion of many years was Polly Noyes with whom he lived for several years until she died in 1987.

Joe followed his own path in life. He was a private man, but one thing that every one knows for sure was that he was a "True Vermonter."

A memorial service "In Celebration of his Life" will be held on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Salisbury Congregational Church. The Rev. John Grivetti, pastor, will officiate. Following the service the family will receive friends in the church hall for a time of fellowship and reflection.

Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made, in his memory, to Elderly Services, Project Independence, P.O. Box 581, Middlebury, Vt., 05733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
