Miss Mary Agnes Barrett
HYDEVILLE - Miss Mary Agnes Barrett, 94, a longtime resident of Hydeville, died Jan. 3, 2004, at Mountain View Center Genesis Eldercare in Rutland, Vt.
Miss Barrett was born on Oct. 22, 1909, in Hydeville, Vt., the daughter of the late Richard and Sarah (Dooley) Barrett. She was a graduate of Mount St. Joseph Academy and furthered her education, receiving her AB in classics from Trinity College in Vermont. She continued her education with graduate work in French and Latin at the University of Vermont and received her MA in French from Middlebury College. Miss Barrett did post graduate studies in French at the Universite de Dijon in Classics at the American Academy in Rome, where she was a Fulbright scholar, and also at Harvard University, where she held a John Hay Fellowship.
Miss Barrett was a teacher for almost 50 years, with her first teaching assignment being in Orwell, Vt. She later taught in Poultney, and her most recent position was at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland, from which she retired in 1980. For 26 years she taught Latin at Torrington High School in Torrington, Conn. Over a period of six summers, Miss Barrett held the position of visiting assistant professor in Latin at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.
For several years, Miss Barrett served the College Entrance Examination Board as reader or examiner in advanced placement Latin. She co-authored a series of high school Latin texts and also served as a member of the Classical Association of New England, of which she had the distinction of holding the presidency of the Connecticut section and, later, the presidency of the association.
She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton, where she served for several years as a lector and also as a member and past president of the St. John's Altar Society. She was a member of the Fair Haven Art Club.
Surviving Miss Barrett are several first cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton. The Rev. Charles R. Danielson, parish priest, will celebrate the Mass. Interment will be at a later date and at the convenience of her family in Calvary cemetery in Rutland.
Visiting hours for family and friends will be on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 No. Main St. Fair Haven.

Samuel Hayes
GRANVILLE, N.Y. - Samuel Hayes, 93, of Granville died Jan. 3, 2004, at the Indian River Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 8, 1910, in Hebron, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Sarah (Cooper) Hayes.
He was a farmer for many years prior to being employed by Washington County until his retirement.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and dancing.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Dennison) Hayes; two sons, Charles Hayes and Edward Hayes, both of Granville; a brother, Billie Hayes of West Glens Falls; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Margaret Fleming of Granville; two brothers, Charles Hayes of Hebron and William Hayes of Greenwich; and three sisters, Inez VanGuilder of Glens Falls, Sarah Jenkins of Hebron and Nellie Winchell of North Granville.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Robert M. King Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date at Mountainview cemetery in West Pawlet, Vt.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Catherine B. Sekellick
MERIDEN, Conn. - Catherine Belden Sekellick, 82, of Meriden, formerly of Wallingford, Conn., died Jan. 3, 2004, in the MidState Medical Center in Meriden.
She was the widow of Michael Sekellick.
She was born in Brandon, Vt., March 11, 1921, the daughter of Gerald and Edna Belden.
She had been a resident of Wallingford, Conn., for many years before moving to Meriden 10 years ago.
Mrs. Sekellick had worked for the Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown for several years until her retirement 30 years ago.
Survivors include four daughters, Margaret Sekellick of Storrs, Suzanne Butler and Mary Cortese, both of Wallingford, and Michaela Palmer of Onacock, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Belden and Richard Belden.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Wallingford Funeral Home with the Rev. Eric Fjeldal, pastor of Yalesville United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be at In Memoriam cemetery.
Friends may call at the Wallingford Funeral Home from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Rita L. Rehbein
PITTSFORD - Rita Lorreta Rehbein, 64, of Pittsford died Jan. 3, 2004, at her residence.
She was born Jan. 1, 1940, in Queens, N.Y., the daughter of Frank and Esmonda (Hoey) Rehbein.
She graduated from All Saints Commerce High School.
She relocated to Vermont in 1979, making her home in Shrewsbury until 1985. She then moved to Pittsford.
Ms. Rehbein worked as a manager by the General Nutrition Center in the Diamond Run Mall for many years.
She attended several churches in the area and was a member of St. Alphonsus Church.
Survivors include cousins Denise Rueda, Mathew Rueda, Maria Rueda, Lea Roach, and Charles Roach, all of Centereach, N.Y.; William Roach of Florida; and Deborah Smith of Rocky Point, N.Y.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at the Aldous Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Lynn M. Gorman
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Lynn Marie (Perkins) Gorman, 40, died Jan. 1, 2004.
She was born in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Thomas and Beatrice (Perkins) Perkins.
She had lived in Springfield, Mass., for the past seven years. She worked as a production controller at Olympic Manufacturing Inc. in Agawam.
She was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.
She enjoyed camping.
Survivors include her husband, Richard C. Gorman Jr.; a brother, Peter Perkins of Maryland; and a sister, Maryann Derouin of Enfield, Conn.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, 216 Allen St.

Conrad A. Lecompte Rites
FOREST DALE - A funeral Mass for Conrad Armand Lecompte, 96, who died Dec. 30, 2003, was celebrated Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert Baltz, pastor, was the celebrant. Gary Griffin, deacon, assisted. A private committal service and burial followed in the family lot at St. Mary's cemetery.
Richard Baker delivered the eulogy.
Organist and soloist was Stu James. Bagpiper was John Peterson.
Bearers were Jonathan Walker, Conrad Waite, Richard Hayes, Brendan LaRock, Dale Harris and Ron Euber.
A reception in the parish hall followed the service.
The Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Mary K. Onion Rites
The memorial service for Mary K. Onion, 83, of Rutland, who died Dec. 18, 2003, was held Saturday at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. Jerry Handspicker, interim senior minister, officiated.
Dan Onion offered words of remembrance.
Organist and pianist was Rip Jackson.
Soloist was Beth Thompson Kaiser.
The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
John P. Griffin
BENNINGTON - John P. Griffin, 87, a former resident of Bennington, died Jan. 4, 2004, at Hoosick Falls Health Center in Hoosick Falls, N.Y.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
Norris S. Putney
WILDER - Norris Stickney Putney, 86, died Jan 4, 2004, at Alice Peck Day Memorial Hospital in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born June 28, 1917, in Hartland, the son of Alson F. and Bernice (Vaughan) Putney.
He graduated from Woodstock High School in 1936 and worked on area farms before working at Atwood's Saw Mill, the Windsor Foundry and Cone's Machine in Windsor. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943.
Following his discharge from the Army, he worked as a sawmill operator before beginning work at the Veterans Administration in White River Junction, where he was a registered radiologic technologist for 30 years. He retired as chief of the X-ray department in 1976.
He married
Evelyn F. Marsh May 8, 1965.
He enjoying gardening, woodcutting, deer hunting, gun collecting and target shooting.
Mr. Putney was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in White River Junction; the National Rifle Association; the Hartford Rod and Gun Club; Hartford Lodge 1541 of Elks; American Legion Post 26 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2571, both in White River Junction; and the National Association of retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include his wife of Wilder; a stepdaughter, Barbara Rector of Hartford; three stepsons, Kenneth Marsh of Cincinnati, Ohio, Paul Marsh of Jacksonville, Fla.; and Stephen Marsh of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Harry Putney of Enfield, Conn.; three step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Marjorie Roberts and Phyllis Allen.
The funeral service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction. Burial will be at a later date in Taftsville cemetery.
