Fannie R. Bahan

NORTH BENNINGTON - Fannie Rogers Bahan, 98, a resident of Hall Street, North Bennington and widow of Carleton Bahan, died on January 1, 2004, at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington after a brief illness.

Born in Manchester, Vermont on April 20, 1905, she was the daughter of Daniel Provan and Bertha (Wyman) Provan of Manchester. She received her education in Manchester schools. In early years she was married to the late Maynard Carlisle of Manchester; she was also the wife of Frank Rogers of South Cambridge, N.Y., who is deceased. Most of her life she and her husband Frank were self-employed in the apartment house business and also purchased and ran the Edgewater Inn on Pleasant Street in Bennington from 1964-1968.

Fannnie's biggest love (other than family and friends) was her passion for gardening and flowers. All her homes from Manchester, South Cambridge, N.Y., Bennington, Pownal and North Bennington were surrounded by big flower gardens which she left behind as her legacy. She also enjoyed dancing and belonged to various clubs in Bennington: the VFW, American Legion and Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliaries and the Women of the Moose. She enjoyed their dinner-dances up until she was in her late 80s. She was a big dog lover and always had one or two dogs all throughout her life and up until lately she enjoyed the company of her granddaughter Terry's dog "Cassie" and her grandson Steve's dog "Daisy."

Survivors include a granddaughter, Theresa (Terry) Wyman and her husband Richard of Winhall, Vt., and her grandson, Stephen Gangloff and his wife Patti of South Cambridge, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Barton Coburn of Londonderry, Vt., and Ryan Matthew Gangloff and Laura Gangloff of South Cambridge, N.Y. She was predeceased by a sister, Carrie Hogue of Fairfield, Conn., and a daughter and son-in-law, Mavis Carlisle Gangloff and Harold Gangloff of Bennington.

Family and friends are invited to the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Sunday, January 4, from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. A prayer service will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. with the Rev. David Jinno, pastor of the North Bennington Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Factory Point cemetery in Manchester in the spring.

In lieu of flowers donations in Fannie Bahan's memory may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter, through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, Vt., 05201.

Barbara J. Hurley Rites

BENNINGTON - The funeral Mass for Barbara J. Hurley, who died Dec. 28, 2003, was celebrated Friday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, associate pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.

Organist was Don McMahon and cantor was Monica Murray.

Bearers were Keith Hurley, Michael Engmann, Curtis White and James Jerome. Honorary bearers were members of the Catholic Daughters of America, Theresa Long, Mary Francis Murphy, Catherine Murphy, Geraldine Sausville, Rita McCann, Louise Gauthier, Dolly Pallo and Kay Allen.

A prayer service preceded the funeral Mass at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.

Russell S. Powden Jr.

PEACHAM - Russell S. Powden Jr., 73, of Peacham, passed away at his home on Friday, January 2, 2004.

Russell was born in Waltham, Mass., on April 24, 1930, to Russell and Mary Katherine (McKillop) Powden.

Surviving family members include his wife of 38 years, Drusilla; three children, Carl of Johnson, Mark and his wife Wendy Lawrence, their children, Russell and Joseph of Washington, D.C., Meg and her partner Jean MacDonald, their two children, Cory and Brooke; three sisters, Nancy Gnewuch and her husband Bill of Ridgefield, Conn., Martha Lilley of Framingham, Mass., Sybil Ganguly and her husband Sam of Milton, Mass., plus nieces and nephews; cousin Charlie Powden and his wife Doris of White River Junction and their family.

Following his 1952 graduation from the University of Vermont, Russell entered the U.S. Army and was selected to attend the U.S. Army Language School in Monterey, California. After completing language training, Russell served in Japan during the Korean War monitoring Soviet Union radio transmissions. Upon leaving the military, he obtained a Master's in Education at Boston University and moved to Peacham, first serving as an elementary school teacher in the East Peacham schoolhouse.

In 1960, Russell began working for Peacham Academy and served as headmaster until 1969, whereupon he began 24 years of work for Lyndon State College in the position of Director of Admissions and Financial Aid.

Throughout these years Russell served in a number of community roles, including a member of the select and school boards.

At the request of the family, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at the Dowser's Hall in Danville on Wednesday, January 7, at 1:30 p.m. A graveside service is planned for a later date in the spring.

The family wants to thank Dr. Tim Tanner, the staffs of Caledonia Home Health and the Riverside Life Enrichment Center, the Peacham First Response Squad and the many individuals who have provided care and assistance over the years.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Russell's memory to the Alzheimer's Association of Vermont and New Hampshire, 338 River Street, P.O. Box 1139, Montpelier, Vt., 05601, or the Peacham Fire Department First Response Squad, P.O. Box 112, Peacham, Vt., 05862.

Mary A. Barrett

HYDEVILLE - Mary Agnes Barrett, 94, of Hydeville, died Jan. 3, 2004, at Mountainview Center, Genesis Eldercare, in Rutland.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home.

Alice E. Carey

RUTLAND - Alice Ethel Carey, 83, of Rutland, died Jan. 3, 2004, at the Park Terrace Community Care Home.

Arrangements are pending by the Aldous Funeral Home, 44, North Main St.

Elaine M. Clark Rites

RUTLAND - A funeral Mass for Elaine M. Clark, 85, who died Dec. 30, 2003, was held Saturday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. The Rev. Richard Tinney, pastor of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church, officiated.

Bearers were Brian Sanderson, Robbie Barrett, Eric Shappy, Craig Shappy, David Caggige and Herbert Johnson III.

A prayer service was held Friday in the Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Paul Sackevich of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.

Ian J. Holt

WOODSTOCK - Ian James Holt, 18, died Jan. 1, 2004, in Woodstock.

He was born Jan. 22, 1985, in Cody, Wyo., the son of Robert A. and Lisa (DesRosiers) Holt.

He graduated from Woodstock Union High School in 2003 and was a freshman at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.

He was an All-American lacrosse player and in 2003, was selected as Vermont's representative to the National All Star Lacrosse Game.

He is survived by his parents, of Woodstock; one brother, Josh Holt of Woodstock; his maternal grandparents, Edwin and Kathleen DesRosiers of Moodus, Conn; and many uncles, aunts, and cousins.

A memorial visitation will be held at the Cabot Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 4, from 4 to 7 p.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Jan. 5, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Union Arena Community Center, P.O. Box 246, Woodstock, VT 05091.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.

William W. Taylor

VENICE, Fla. - William W. Taylor, 80, of Venice, Fla, formerly of Vermont, died Dec. 30, 2003, in Venice.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1923, in Springfield, Vt.

He graduated from Kimball Union Academy in Meredith, N.H., and attended the University of Vermont. He served with the U.S. Army in World War II.

Mr. Taylor was a sales representative for West Vaco in New York City for 20 years until his retirement.

Survivors include his widow, Joan Taylor, of Venice, Fla; daughters Laura E. Taylor of San Francisco, Calif., and Katherine Park of Shushan, N.Y; a son, William W. Taylor, Jr. of Waterbury, Vt; a step-son, Ian W. McCullough of Waterbury, Vt; step-daughter Robin D. McCullough of Fairfield, Conn; and seven grandchildren. He is predeceased by his first wife, Patricia Taylor.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, at the Farley Funeral Home, Venice Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 69, Venice, FL 34284-0069.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Farley Funeral Home and Crematory Venice Chapel.

Patricia R. Underhill

PITTSFORD - Patricia R. Underhill, 85, of Pittsford, died Jan. 3, 2004, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 15, 1918, in Rutland, daughter of of Ivor and Elizabeth (Potter) Fitzgerald.

Mrs. Underhill graduated from the Rutland Hospital Nursing program.

She had been employed as a licensed practical nurse by Pleasant Manor Nursing Home, Loretta Home, and Perham's Nursing Home until her retirement in 1978.

She was a member of St. Peter Church and St. Alphonsus Church.

She enjoyed bird watching and lawn sales.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Baker and Sandra Stone, both of Rutland; three sons, Harry "Colby" Underhill and Edward E. Underhill, both of Rutland, and Richard T. Underhill of Pittsford; a sister, Carolyn Thompson of Rutland; 12 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Underhill; a son, David J. Underhill; two sisters, Madeline Shaeehn and Arene Brothers; five brothers, Theodore Fitzgerald, Earl Fitzgerald, Henry "Red" Fitzgerald, Iver Fitzgerald, and Harold "Gussie" Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Church. A private burial will take place in the Calvary cemetery.

Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pittsford First Response, Box 433, Pittsford, VT 05763.

Erynn Beth Torrey

BRANDON - Erynn Beth Torrey, 25, died Jan. 4, 2004, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Florida.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

Larry Allen

Larry Allen, 69, a former resident of Brandon, died Jan. 4, 2003, at his home in Rutland.

Alice E. Carey

Alice Ethel Carey, 83, of Rutland died Jan. 3, 2004, at Park Terrace Community Care Home.

She was born Dec. 30, 1920, in Rutland, the daughter of Alfard and Ethel Godell.

She married Steward M. Carey on Aug. 6, 1977. He died in 2001.

Mrs. Carey was a longtime resident of Rutland and a member of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ.

She worked at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home for many years.

She enjoyed dancing.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by three brothers, Alfred Godell, Dean Godell and Daniel Godell, and her husband.

The funeral service will be Tuesday at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Congregational United Church of Christ, 8 Court St., Rutland, 05701, or to the Park Terrace Activities Fund, 48 S. Main St., Rutland, 05701.

The Aldous Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
