Gordon W. DeKalb
NORTH GRANVILLE, N.Y. - Gordon W. DeKalb, 83, died Dec. 19, 2003, at his home in North Granville following a long illness.
He was born May 24, 1920, in Granville, the son of Frank and Ora (Tillson) DeKalb.
He was a lifelong dairy farmer. He also worked for the Town of Granville Highway Department and drove a school bus for the Granville Central School District.
Mr. DeKalb enjoyed fishing and cutting fire wood.
He married
Winifred Fuller on March 14, 1940.
Besides his widow, he leaves three sons, Gordon F. "Sonny" "Tex" DeKalb of Roxboro, N.C., and Douglas and Raymond DeKalb, both of Granville; two sisters, Flora Holmes and Lillian Beckwith; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Aldous.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Robert M. King Funeral Home, 23 Church St., Granville. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 p.m. to the time of service. Burial will be in the North Granville cemetery at a later date.

Edward A. Stukus
BENNINGTON - Edward A. Stukus, 89, died Dec. 19, 2003, at the Crescent Manner Nursing Home in Bennington.
He was born July 27, 1914, in Fall River, Mass, son of Albert and Solomea (Osip) Stukus.
He was educated in Manchester, N.H.
He married
Clovis Crandall on Dec. 31, 1939, in Bennington. She died in 2002.
Mr. Stukus entered the Air Force in May, 1945, and served as a ball-turret gunner during World War II.
He worked for the Vermont Highway Department for 16 years and retired in 1961. He then worked for the Army Corp of Engineers at the flood control dam in Jamaica until 1972.
He was a member of the Chester American Legion Post 67 and the D.A.V.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a son, Albert Stukus of West Rutland; a daughter, Emily Underwood of South Londonderry; five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Londonderry Congregational Church. Burial will follow in the Rosenville cemetery, Jamaica.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier 05602.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams and Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.
Annie L. Borkowski
WHITEHALL, N.Y. - Annie L. Borkowski, 85, died at her home Dec. 17, 2003, following a long illness.
She was born Oct. 13, 1918, in New York, the daughter of Robert Ewing Harding and Thelma (Morgan) Harding.
She worked for Indian River Adult Home in Granville.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church of Whitehall.
She was a member of American Legion Post 83, Ladies Auxiliary of Whitehall, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary of Fair Haven, Vt.
She collected angels.
Survivors include two stepsons, Robert and Phillip Britton of Connecticut; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her two husbands, Samuel Snodgrass and Theodore Borkowski; her longtime companion, Phillip Britton; two daughters, Laura Lee Par and Florence Jo MacCabe; a son, John Snodgrass; and a grandson.
The funeral service will be held today at 7 p.m. at the Michael G. Angiolillo Funeral Home in Whitehall with the Rev. David R. LeFort, pastor of Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, officiating. A burial service will be held at Our Lady of Angels cemetery in Whitehall at a later date.
Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5:30 p.m. until the time of the services.

Kathleen A. Davis
Mrs. Kathleen A. Davis, 53, died Dec. 19, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., after a short illness.
Kathy was born on Feb. 21, 1950, in Rutland, Vt., the daughter of Edward T. and Virginia M. (Gray) Carvey Sr. She attended grammar school at St. Mary's Parochial School and graduated from Fair Haven Union High School with the Class of 1968. She furthered her education with courses at local colleges.
Kathy was first employed at the Aircraft Engine Division of General Electric Co. in Rutland and was later employed as office administrator for the Bixby Fuel Co. in Poultney. Most recently, at the time of her death, she was employed for the Hutchins & White Fuel Co. in Castleton.
During her life Kathy loved the outdoors, working in her flower gardens and planning and participating in activities with all of her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth A. Davis of Rutland; her three sons, Fredric J. Brooks Jr. and his companion, Anna, of Poultney, Vt., Allen P. Brooks and his wife, Caroline, of Great Falls, Mont., James G. Brooks and his wife, Kimberly, of Whitehall, N.Y.; her three stepsons, Kenneth Davis and his wife, Gina, of Ludlow, Vt., Timothy Davis and his wife, Kathy, of Forest Dale, Vt., and Scott Davis of Chesterfield, Del.; her 11 siblings, Edward T. Carvey Jr. of Abilene, Texas, , Patricia Doaner and her husband, Chet, of Rutland, Vt., Mary Niles and her husband, Don of Walkerton, Ind., Robert Carvey and his wife, Sally, of Rutland, Vt., Leo "Mickey" Carvey of Hydeville, Vt., Elizabeth Hauger of Thetford, Vt., Timothy Carvey and his wife, Denise, of Atwater, Calif., Rita Ross and her husband, Tony Sr. of Poultney, Monica Williams and her husband, Clarence, of Glens Falls, N.Y., Bernard Carvey and his wife, Johnna, of Poultney, Vt., and Sheila Hall and her husband, Rick, of Bomoseen, Vt. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents; her first husband, Fredric J. Brooks Sr.; and by her sister-in-law, Connie Carvey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery in Fair Haven at a later date.
Visiting hours for family and friends will be on Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 North Main St., Fair Haven, Vt.
Kathy's family requests that as an alternative to flower donations a donation in her memory may be offered to the American Diabetes Association, New England Region, at 77 Hegeman Drive, Colchester, VT 05446.
Gladys E. Monahan
Gladys E. Monahan, 91, died Dec. 20, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Rutland, Oct. 11, 1912, the daughter of Fred and Gertrude (Fosburgh) Pockette.
She worked for Caverly Child Health Center in Pittsford as a house mother for the girls.
Survivors include a son, Donald Monahan of Rutland; two daughters, Marinell Johnston of Ira and Elizabeth Jennessee of Florida; three sisters, Dorothy Beane of East Hartford, Conn., Ramona Guimonds of Ludlow and Charlene Rollins of Rutland; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sons, Alvin Monahan Jr. and Frederick Monahan; and two sisters, Mildred Grover and Winifred Rollins.
There are no calling hours or funeral services planned at this time.
The Clifford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Jessie E. Smatresk
Jessie E. (Serviss) Smatresk, 84, of Rutland died Dec. 21, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Tossing Funeral Home.
Calvin Theodore Hendee
Calvin Theodore "Ted" Hendee, 78, of Rutland Town, passed away quietly at his home on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, with family and friends present.
Mr. Hendee was born in Proctor Feb. 1, 1925, the son of Warren G. and Sallie Joy (Hooker) Hendee. He attended schools in the Barstow/Pittsford district, and majored in accounting and mechanics.
Throughout his youth he was bat boy for various area baseball teams for which his father pitched. He was also known about town for his resounding natural tenor voice.
Mr. Hendee served in the U.S. Army as an MP during World War II.
On Sept. 26, 1948, he married
Naomi Wheeler of Rutland Town.
He worked for Pat Keith's, Cootey's Garage and Buster Blanchard's Garage from a young age until 1950, when he became co-owner of a trucking and truck repair service in Rutland Town. In 1951 he became owner of Hendee's Garage and Body Shop on McKinley Avenue. Over the years he earned the nickname "the good doctor" for his general automotive abilities and helping fine-tune race cars for New England area drivers.
In 1969 Mr. Hendee transferred his church membership from Pittsford to Grace Congregational United Church of Christ in Rutland.
Mr. Hendee enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and animals. He spent many happy times at Castle in the Sky, his mountain camp, with family and friends. He was always ready for a good laugh or a practical joke. The land around his home and camp is home to many varieties of wildlife, which he enjoyed watching. He also took pride in preserving the forest lands around his camp. In later years his biggest enjoyment was his grandchildren and their accomplishments.
Mr. Hendee was a charter member of the Rutland Town Fire Department.
He was predeceased by a son, Kevin Shawn Hendee in 1983.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi (Wheeler) Hendee of Rutland Town; a son, Daniel Hendee, and his wife, Shelly, and their daughter, Danielle, of Rutland Town; a grandson, Shawn Hendee of Pittsford; a daughter, Donna Hendee of Rutland Town; and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 11 a.m. in the Grace Congregational united Church of Christ.
Calling hours will be held Monday, Dec. 22, from 3-7 p.m. in the Tossing Funeral home. Burial will be in the Cheney Hill cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made in Ted's memory to the Rutland County Humane Society, P.O. Box 558, Pittsford, VT 05763.

Doris S. Van Buskirk Rites
The private memorial service for Doris Smith Van Buskirk, 93, who died Dec. 17, 2003, was held Sunday in the chapel at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ. The Rev. M.B. Handspicker, interim pastor, officiated. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery in the spring.
Organist was Rip Jackson.
