John C. Peterson
NORTH CLARENDON - John C. Peterson, 55, died Dec. 16, 2003, at his home.
He was born July 9, 1948, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the son of John and Florence (Eppelshimer) Peterson.
He graduated from Commack High School North and attended Suffolk Community College on Long Island.
Mr. Peterson worked as a crossing guard for Rutland City and most recently at Christ the King School.
He was a midget league and girls high school softball umpire.
He was an avid New York Yankees fan and enjoyed watching professional sports.
Survivors include his wife, Melanie (Ross) Peterson of North Clarendon, and a daughter, Alice Peterson of Rutland.
No services are planned.

Winston L. Lapell
POULTNEY - Winston L. Lapell, 80, died Dec. 15, 2003, at his home.
He was born June 12, 1923, in Shoreham, the son of Earl and Nina (Garvey) Lapell.
He worked as a truck driver for Goddard's Transportation for 40 years, and was a fourth-generation farmer in Shoreham.
Mr. Lapell enjoyed trucking, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Bertha (Hutchins) Lapell of Middlebury; two sons, Wayne Lapell of Burlington and Lee Lapell of Benson; a daughter, Marlene Lapell of West Virginia; a stepdaughter, Beatrice Cousino; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn (Beebe) Lapell in 1979; and a brother, Gerald Lapell.
The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mr. Lapell's home at 198 Broughton Ave. in Poultney.

Fred C. Parker
POULTNEY - Fred C. Parker, 91, died Dec. 16, 2003, at Hallmark Nursing Center in Granville, N.Y.
He was born Sept. 15, 1912, in Poultney, the son of Harry and Cora (VanGuilder) Parker.
He worked as a heavy equipment operator for B.A. Simmone in Boston prior to his retirement.
Mr. Parker enjoyed hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
Survivors include three sons, George Parker of Granville, N.Y., Fred Parker of Rutland and Robert Parker of Oklahoma; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nora (Wescott) Parker in 1985; two daughters, Cora Parker and Frances Taran; and one sister, Mildred Thomas.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home with the Rev. Stephen Payne officiating. Burial will take place in the Poultney cemetery at a later date.
Calling hours will be held 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Margaret B. Haggerty
The memorial service for Margaret Bender Haggerty, 95, of Rutland who died Tuesday morning, December 16, 2003, at her residence will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 23, at Sherburne United Church of Christ. A reception will follow at the Stage Road residence of Pat and Ed Fowler.
She was born January 31, 1908 in Astoria, N.Y., the daughter of Jacob and Emma (Steigertahl) Bender.
Mrs. Haggerty was raised in Vineland, N.J., and Oradell, N.J., attending local schools. Following graduation she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City for one year and graduated from Mount Clair Normal School with her teaching degree. She taught elementary school for nine years prior to her marriage to Lewis M. Haggerty DDS in 1937.
Prior to moving to Vermont in 1996 she had been a longtime resident of Hackensack, N.J., and West Hartford, Conn. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hackensack.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia "Pat" Fowler and son-in-law Ed Fowler of Killington; daughter-in-law, Susan Hartnett of Scottsdale, Ariz.; three grandchildren, David A. Haggerty of California, Leigh M. Sloss of Swampscott, Mass., and Kate C. Fowler of Killington.
She was predeceased by her husband 1980; and her son, Dr. Robert Haggerty in 1975.
There will be no public calling hours.

Adam F. Jaginski Rites
WEST RUTLAND - The funeral Mass for Adam F. Jaginski, 81, who died Dec. 15, 2003, was celebrated Wednesday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland. The Rev. Frank Warzocha, pastor, officiated.
Organist was Dorothy Blicharz.
Bearers were Stan Jagodzinski, Daniel Pinkowski, Martin Pinkowski, David Murray, Alan Ridlon Jr. and Gary Chapin.
A prayer service was held Wednesday at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home in West Rutland by the Rev. Warzocha.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home.
Louis Carrara Rites
CUTTINGSVILLE - Funeral services for Louis Carrara, 88, of Cuttingsville, who died Dec. 11, 2003, at Mountain View Center were held Saturday, December 13, at Christ the King Church in Rutland. Officiating was the Rev. Reid C. Mayo, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in Northam cemetery in Shrewsbury.
Sister Francis Patrick was vocalist. Sister Pauline Gratton was organist.
Bearers were James Brytowski, Dan Pinkowski, Marty Pinkowski, Randy Stevens, Don Carrara and Derek Carrara.
The Clifford Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Ethel L. Gates Rites
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The funeral Mass for Ethel Louise Gates, 94, who died Dec. 13, 2003, was celebrated Wednesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton, Vt. The Rev. Charles Danielson, parish priest, officiated. Burial will take place in St. Raphael cemetery in Poultney, Vt., at the convenience of the family.
Organist was Hazel Beals.
Eulogy was given by Cindy Rabideau, Mrs. Gates' daughter.

Gordon E. Boutwell
STOCKBRIDGE - Gordon E. Boutwell, 78, died Dec. 15, 2003, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
He was born June 30, 1925, in Stockbridge, the son of Chauncey and Mary (Martell) Boutwell.
He graduated from Whitcomb High School in Bethel and studied electronics at the National Radio Institute in Washington, D.C.
He married
Wanda Luce on Nov. 21, 1948, in Windsor. She died in 1993.
He worked as a television repairman and as an electrician. He was a master electrician at Hawk Mountain for many years, and retired from Weyerhauser in Hancock after several years. He had recently been driving people to their appointments for the Stage Coach in Randolph.
Mr. Boutwell served in the U.S. Army, 328th Infantry, Company G, in northern France, Normandy and central Europe during World War II.
He enjoyed gardening, country music, playing horseshoes and pool, and attending fiddling hoedowns.
Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Boutwell of Hancock; two sons, Stuart Boutwell of Hancock and Steven Boutwell of Tobaccoville, N.C.; two granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
He was predeceased by a sister, Thelma Miller, in November 2003.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hancock Church with the Rev. Wayne Holsman officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Hancock Village cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.

Joan E. Nutbrown
DUMMERSTON - Joan Ellean Nutbrown, 75, died Dec. 16, 2003, at her home.
She was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Ayer's Cliff, Quebec, the daughter of Lee and Annie (Yetter) Dezan.
She attended Ayer's Cliff High School, and later moved to the Brattleboro area before settling in Dummerston.
She married
Russell Nutbrown on April 10, 1948, in Lennoxville, Quebec.
Mrs. Nutbrown worked as a floral designer in Canada and at Bishop University in Lennoxville for several years.
She attended Dummerston Center Congregational Church and was a member of the Women's Association within the church.
She was an accomplished musician who enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, and was featured on several radio shows in Canada. She was a member of the Jolly Mountaineers band. Mrs. Nutbrown enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Barry Nutbrown of Dummerston; two daughters, Brenda Kazmierczak of Virginia Beach, Va., and Nancy Higley of Vernon; four brothers, Rodger Dezan of Ontario, Edwin Dezan of Lennoxville, Maurice Dezan of Massawippi, and Royce Dezan of Ayer's Cliff; six sisters, Ida Hoyt and Violet Yetter, both of Magog, Leila Mosher and Marilyn Dezan, both of Ayer's Cliff; Ruby Buttemer of Cookshire and Edwina Crowe of Ontario; six grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Clair Dezan, Arnold Dezan and Lee Dezan; and two sisters, Edna Dezan and Evelyn Yetter.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dummerston Center Congregational Church with the Rev. William Bartholomew, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in Dummerston Center cemetery at a later date.
A reception will follow in the church vestry following the service.
There will be no calling hours.
