RACHEL M. DOW
GEORGIA - Rachel Dow, 78, wife of Ryle K. Dow, passed away early Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Northwestern Medical Center, surrounded by her loving family, following a brief illness. She was born in Barton, Vermont on Jan. 30, 1924, the daughter of the late Charles and Merilda (Tetreault) Audy. On Aug. 2, 1948, in Danby, Vermont she married Ryle K. Dow.
Mrs. Dow was a World War II veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, serving from 1941 to 1943. She was on the board of the St. Albans Free Library, a member of the Ethan Allen Homestead, and the Art League of Franklin County. She was also a 4H Leader of the Lakeside Lassies and a volunteer instructor of the Adult Literacy Program.
Rachel was a renaissance woman, an artisan in ceramics, oil painting, porcelain doll making and needlework. She was an avid reader and gardener and UVM hockey fan. She loved Vermont and Lake Champlain. She served in the Marines in California and Oklahoma, and then used her GI Bill to attend UVM, graduating in 1952 with a degree in English and French.
Besides her husband, Ryle of Georgia, she is survived by a daughter Cindy Martell and her children Julia Tabor and Paul Martell of Milton, a daughter and her husband Debbie and Steve Britton of North Wilkesboro, N.C., a daughter and her husband Kareen and Kim Wortman and their children Kevin and Kris Wortman of Westford, Mass., a daughter and her husband Pat and Doug Lawrence and their daughter Liz of Randolph, a daughter and her husband, Christine and Scott Anderson and their daughter Kyra Marie of Louisville, Ky., a son Galen Dow and his children Christian and Brittany of South Burlington, a daughter and her husband, Alita and Doug Phelps and his daughter Tracey of Essex Junction, and a son and his wife, Rick and Karen Dow and their children Haley, Maya, Jacob, and Ryley of St. Albans.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 2 p.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to a charity of one's choice.
BETTY L. CLACK
ST. ALBANS -- Miss Betty L. Clack, 73, a lifelong resident of this area, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at Northwestern Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in St. Albans, Sept. 23, 1928, the daughter of the late Arthur and Winifred (Johnson) Clack.
Betty was a 1946 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Before her retirement she was employed by Woolworth's Store for 10 years and Edna's Day Care for over 15 years. Her favorite pastimes were reading, walking and knitting.
Survivors include a sister, Gladys Osborne and her husband, Gordon of St. Albans; a brother, Robert Clack and his wife, Joan of Montpelier; a special niece, Susan Wheland of Liverpool, N.Y.; a special nephew, Gordie Osborne of Essex Junction; and other nieces, nephews, and cousins. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, William Clack.
Funeral services will be held on Monday Feb. 11, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Interment will be this spring in the Clack family lot at St. Albans Bay Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Friends may call on Sunday from 2-5 p.m. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street.
JAMES H. MOSSEY, JR.
ENOSBURG FALLS -- James H. Mossey, Jr., age 55, died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.
He was born in St. Albans Dec. 11, 1946, the son of Blanche (Garceau) Mossey and the late James H. Mossey, Sr.
He was a resident of Enosburg for the past eight years and a former resident of Berkshire, Milton and Marlboro, Mass. He was a U.S. Army Veteran during the Vietnam War and a member of the American Legion Post #42 of Enosburg Falls. He was employed at Prestige Aircraft in Highgate for several years, retiring June 15, 2001, due to poor health. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR and camping with his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, June (Holmes) Mossey of Enosburg Falls; two children, and their husbands, Laura and Jay Wallace of West Enosburg and Brenda and Jon Pedersen of Oahu, Hawaii; his mother, Blanche Mossey of Grafton, Mass.; two grandchildren, Christopher and Shawna Winczewski; two step-grandchildren, Kelsey and Marina Wallace; one brother and his wife, Wayne and Luanne Mossey of Grafton, Mass.; two sisters, Brenda Frantz and her husband Howard of Northboro, Mass., and Sandra Hasting of Grafton, Mass.; a sister-in-law, Nancy Mossey of Marlboro, Mass. Besides his father, James was predeceased by a brother, Roger Mossey, and two sisters, Patricia Dudley and Debra Elbe.
Friends and relatives may call on the family one hour prior to the funeral, which will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home, 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls. Interment will be in the spring in the East Franklin Cemetery.

DAVID LEE MAGNAN
SHELBURNE -- David Lee Magnan, 53, of Shelburne died unexpectedly in an automobile accident on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, in North Platte, Neb.
David was born on June 19, 1948, in St. Albans, the son of Leonidas and Loretta (Coleman) Magnan. He was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, class of 1966. On June 28, 1969, he married Julie Ann Branon, his high school sweetheart, in St. Patrick's Church, Fairfield. Their love for each other has served as an example to all who have known them.
David attended VTC until he was called to service as a member of the Navy "Seabees" in the Vietnam War from 1967-1969. David worked as a loyal part of Shelburne Limestone Corporation, an employee who was both dedicated and devoted to the work he loved for 33 years. He was an avid hunter and sugarmaker, as well as an accomplished pilot. David always sought adventure. He loved skiing, boating and camping. David served his community and influenced many lives as a devoted coach for the Shelburne Town Soccer, Softball, and Little Leagues. He was also a member of the CSB hockey program, serving as a member of the board and schedule coordinator for several years. David was a member of the Kwiniaska Golf Course, where he has spent countless hours with his wife and friends in pursuit of the perfect game. He was a proud member of the Burlington Elks Lodge #916. He was also a member of the St. Catherine of Siena Parish Choir.
David is survived by his soulmate and wife, Julie Magnan of Shelburne; his four children, Lori and Greg Morino of Long Island, N.Y., Keith Magnan of Shelburne, Serena Magnan of Shelburne, and Joanne Magnan of Shelburne. He will be dearly missed by his two grandchildren, Cole and Juliana Marino who loved their Grampa. He will also be missed by his four-legged friend, his dog Brodie. David is also survived by his parents, Lee and Loretta Magnan of Montpelier; as well as his four siblings, Mary Ann and Wayne LaRock of Morrisville, Beth and Michael Hulbert of Barre, Paul and Mary Jane Magnan of Barre, and Chris and Stephanie Magnan of Barre. He is survived by his extended family Patrick and Nancy Branon of Fairfield, Peter and Nancy Branon of San Jose, Calif., David and Kay Branon of San Martin, Calif., Senator Sara and Bill Kittell of Fairfield, Betsy and John Depman of Bel Air, Md., Karen and Rich Toubman of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and Bruce and Natalie Branon of Fairfield. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren, and may very special friends. David was predeceased by his mother-in-law and father-in-law Elizabeth A. Branon and Robert J. Branon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Feb. 11, at 11:30 a.m. in Saint John Vianney Roman Catholic Church, South Burlington. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Prostate Cancer Research, 11 Loomis St., Montpelier, Vt. 05602, or request a Mass donation in David's memory to the church of one's choice.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, Feb. 10, from 12-2 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. at the Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Road, Burlington.
JENNIE H. GILSON
MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. -- Jennie H. Gilson, 95, of Underwood Avenue, Mechanicville, N.Y. died Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital following a short illness.
She was born Oct. 20, 1906 in St. Albans, daughter of the late William and Hattie McPherson Hamilton.
Jennie was the widow of Joseph Gilson.
She was a resident of Mechanicville for over 75 years. She retired in 1978 from the NYS Dept. of Tax and Finance in Albany, N.Y. She was an active member of the Saratoga County and Mechanicville City Women's Republican Club. Also, a member of the Star of Liberty Chapter O.E.S. Jennie was a charter member of the Mechanicville Area Senior Citizens, a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and the St. Martha's Guild of the Church, and a member of All Saints' Episcopal Church of Round Lake.
Jennie was an avid seamstress, quilter, and won several ribbons from the Saratoga County Fair.
She is survived by her very special friends Terry and Kay Waldron of Mechanicville. Also, her sister Sadie E. Hamilton predeceased her.
An Episcopal Liturgy will be offered Saturday, Feb. 9, at 4 p.m. from the Dunn Funeral Homes, Inc., 319 Park Avenue, Mechanicville, N.Y., with the Reverend Roger Bower, Rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church Mechanicville officiating, and the Reverend Oscar Sodergren, Rector of All Saints' Episcopal Church Round Lake officiating.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday at the Dunn Funeral Homes, Mechanicville, from 2-4 p.m.
The burial will be in St. Albans Bay Cemetery, St. Albans in the spring.

PHYLLIS POWELL
WESTMORELAND, N.H./BRATTLEBORO -- Phyllis E. Powell, 80, a resident at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland since Jan. 11, died peacefully Monday morning, Feb. 4, 2002, surrounded by her family at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 28, 1921, in Swanton, a daughter of Charles S. and Ruby W. (Graham) Gould. She was raised and educated in St. Albans and was a graduate of Bellows Free Academy, class of 1939.
She was employed as a secretary at Dunham Brothers Shoe Co. on Cotton Mill Hill for several years, retiring in 1974.
Previously, she worked as a secretary in the offices at CIFCO in Brattleboro, and during the Second World War was employed at a law office in Washington, D.C.
She was a resident of Brattleboro since 1961, moving to town from St. Albans with her family.
A loving wife, mother, and grandmother and a devoted homemaker, she was very active in bringing up her children, taking an active role and supporting them in their many activities. She enjoyed making her grandchildren feel special.
Mrs. Powell was also a very giving and generous woman who was always willing and able to help others in need.
Of her hobbies and interests, she enjoyed bingo, shopping, that included attending yard sales, flea markets and estate auctions and sales, and travel of which with her husband she went across country several times.
On July 11, 1942, in St. Albans she was married to Francis Powell, who died Feb. 28, 1987.
She leaves two sons, Charles F. Powell of Hinsdale and James K. Powell of Brattleboro; two daughters, Sylvia Lyon of Brattleboro and Lee Ann Sherry of Westminster, Colo.; one sister, Claire Walker of Lovell, Maine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Kenneth Gould, Robert Gould and Raymond Gould; and three sisters, Louise Allard, Marjorie Fairbanks and Sylvia Bigler.
Graveside committal services will be conducted in the family lot in Morningside Cemetery in the springtime, to be announced by the funeral home at a later date. There are no calling hours.

WILFRED E. JOSEPH "WILLY" MARTEL
COLCHESTER -- Wilfred "Willy" Martel, 65, a longtime resident of the Mayo Road in Colchester and formerly of the Highgate/St. Albans area died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 5, 2002, in his home.
Born Jan. 26, 1937, he was the son of the late Nazaire and Aurora (Allen) Martel. He attended schools in Swanton, Highgate and St. Albans and on Oct. 28, 1982, married the former Carolyn Stewart who survives him.
For twenty-five years Wilfred was associated as a machinist for the General Electric Company in Burlington. He honorably served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and will be remembered as an avid bingo player at the Drag Strip and Jasper Mine Bingo Halls in Milton .
In addition to his wife, Carolyn of Colchester, Wilfred leaves two daughters, Linda Kay Rivers of Tallahassee, Fla., and Rebecca Ann (Becky) Rock of St. Albans. Also surviving are three brothers, Roland Martel of R.I., Maurice Martel of N.C., and Floyd Martel of Burlington; three sisters, Doris Martel-Bailey of St. Albans, Pauline Martel of Fla. and Joyce Unwin of Panton; six grandchildren, Carrie, Heather, Jessie, Uriah, Hillerie and Joseph; one great-grandson, Dylan; and four great-granddaughters, Hailie, Keisha, Abigail and Olivia. He also leaves two close family friends, Daniel May of Middlesex and Nancy Boyer of Highgate Falls.
A sister Barbara Unwin predeceased him and also his pet dog Patches in March of 2001.
Wilfred's family wishes to give special thanks to the Visiting Nurse Association-Hospice Program, especially, nurses Katrina and Nancy and social worker, Melissa for all the love support and professional care given to Wilfred in the last several months.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton. The Reverend Marcheta Townsend, pastor of the Highgate United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Friends may call at Kidder Memorial Home on Saturday from 1 p.m. until the hour of the funeral. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Wilfred's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, Vermont Division, 150 Kennedy Drive, South Burlington, Vt. 05403.
