Gordon Ira Webster Ranney
PROCTORSVILLE — Gordon Ira Webster Ranney, 77, died Oct. 1, 2003, at Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.
He was born Feb. 14, 1926, in Mount Holly, the son of Nathan Ranney and Lucy (Hinckley) Ranney. He was educated in the Fair Haven schools.
He joined the Army in 1944 and was in the 84th Infantry Division, serving in Germany and France during World War II.
After military service, he worked for the Vermont Foundries for 21 years. He then worked for 16 years at General Electric in Rutland.
He was a member of American Legion Post 100 in Montpelier. He enjoyed gardening and hunting.
Survivors include two sons, George Ranney of Cavendish and John Ranney of Chester; four daughters, Betty Bartos of Turners Falls, Mass., Jeanie Ranney of Northampton, Mass., Susan Winot of Proctorsville, and Peggy Munger of Benson; two stepsons, Vaughn Preedom of Wallingford and Gary Preedom of Weston; two brothers, Wayne Ranney of Cavendish, Irving Ranney of Rutland; and a sister, Ramona Turner of West Rutland. He was predeceased by his wife, Ada Fairbanks Ranney, and a brother, Leroy Ranney.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Hillcrest cemetery in Proctorsville.
Friends may call Friday at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock from 6 to 8 p.m.

Stanley A. Lincoln
LUDLOW — Stanley A. Lincoln was called home to glory on Oct. 2, 2003.
He was born May 17, 1930, in Sandgate, Vt., son of Harry and Sylvia Jorgensen Lincoln.
He enlisted in the Navy for one year in 1947. He was recalled to active duty for two years during the Korean conflict.
He married
Jean Brophy Aug. 26, 1950, in East Dorset, Vt.
He worked for Mack Molding for 45 years, retiring in 1991. He spent most of his retirement years working in his garden and his Christmas tree plantation in Sandgate.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors.
He was a member of Ludlow Baptist Church since moving to Ludlow in 1965. He served many years as a Sunday school teacher, lay speaker and elder. He was also a member of the Gideons International for several years.
Survivors besides his wife are: a daughter, Vicki and husband Terry Brown of Oregon; daughter Jacqueline and husband Michael Guica of Cavendish; son Stephen and his wife Dawn Lincoln of Oregon; his mother, a brother Douglas and wife Janice Lincoln, sister Betty and husband Louis Andrews all of Shushan, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the Ludlow Baptist Church on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in Pleasantview cemetery.
Friends may call at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lorraine A. Morancy
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Lorraine A. Morancy, 76, died Oct. 2, 2003, at her home after a lengthy battle with cancer.
She was born in Johnson Dec. 23, 1926, the daughter of Homer and Lula (Driscoll) Coan. She attended school in Johnson, graduating in 1945, and attended college in Boston.
She married
Walter O. Morancy of Morrisville on April 29, 1946. They lived in Johnson until moving to White River Junction in 1952, where they have lived since.
She was a bookkeeper for Shepard Corp. and Rouse Transportation, both in White River Junction, as well as other area businesses.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in White River Junction, and enjoyed oil painting and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband of White River Junction; two daughters, Melody Martin of Wilder and Cathy Moloney of North Hartland; a son, Walter W. Morancy of Claremont, N.H.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and Howard Coan.
There will be no calling hours. There will be a family gathering at their home on Sunday.

William Ross Thomson
BENNINGTON — William Ross Thomson, 52, died Oct. 1, 2003, in Bennington.
He was born in Bennington Feb. 12, 1951, the son of Kenneth and Lila (Marsh) Thomson. He received his education in the Bennington schools and was a 1969 graduate of Mount Anthony Union High School. He was a 1971 graduate of St. Joseph’s Business College.
He married
the former Lucinda “Cindy” Stout at St. Peter’s Episcopal. Church in Bennington on June 8, 1974.
An active member of the Bennington business community for many years, Mr. Thomson purchased Demarco’s Sporting Goods on Northside Drive in Bennington in 1971. In 1980 he and his wife sold the business and purchased Bennington Lanes on Northside Drive. In 1994, they opened the Northside Dairy Bar. In 1996, they founded Eastwoods Development in Bennington.
He was a past member of the Southern Vermont College Board of Trustees and a former member of the Bennington Rotary Club.
He was an avid outdoorsman and car collector. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and had also flown his own plane at one time. He and his father-in-law, Robert Stout, owned a 1910 Maxwell car.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Brooke Thomson of Oneonta, N.Y., and Amanda Thomson of Bennington; two sons, Gareth Thomson of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Alex Thomson of Bennington; two aunts; an uncle; and several cousins.
The funeral will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington on Monday at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Penny Hawkins, deacon, officiating.
Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m.

Heather Bogardus Rites
The funeral of Heather Bogardus was held Wednesday at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.
Her husband, Richard, was vocalist.
Family members and a friend presented readings and eulogies.
Members of the Bennington Lions Club attended in a group.
A reception followed at the family home.
Ruth C. Hale
Ruth Crane Hale, 104, of Rutland died Oct. 3, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
She was born Feb. 16, 1899, in Rutland, the daughter of Leslie and Nina (Partridge) Crane.
She graduated from Rutland High School.
Mrs. Hale was an accomplish seamstress. She worked for Rosenblatt Co., the Fashion Shop and the Towne Shop. She also taught basketry.
She was a member of Grace Congregational United Church of Christ, Ann Story Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, Airoc Court, Ladies of the Oriental Shrine of North American 42, Otter Creek Homemakers Club, Rutland Historical Society, and past member of American Red Cross.
She enjoyed gardening, chair caning, tatting and basketry.
Survivors include her son, Charles Hale of Andover; her daughter, Esther Hoadley of Rutland; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.
She was predeceased by a brother, Howard Crane in 1947; and a daughter, Betty Perrin in 1990.
There will be no services.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, in care of Charles Baker, Recorder, 51 Washington St., Rutland, 05701.

E. John Staples
KILLINGTON — E. John Staples, 73, died Oct. 3, 2003, at his home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
Emaroy L. VanGuilder
MOUNT HOLLY — Emaroy L. “Amy” VanGuilder, 80, died Oct. 2, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland.
She was born June 26, 1923, in Salisbury, the daughter of William and Edith (Wimett) Sampson.
She attended school in Salisbury and Middlebury.
She married
Floyd VanGuilder on June 30, 1947, in Mount Holly.
Mrs. VanGuilder worked in various textile mills for many years and at Carris Reels. She also operated a restaurant in Mount Holly.
She enjoyed rug making and bingo.
Survivors include her son, David Cram of DeLand, Fla.; her daughter, Ginger Palmer of Mount Holly; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband; her brother; and her sisters.
The graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family.
There will be no calling hours.

Edward R. Mattson
BETHEL — Edward R. “Bob” Mattson, 73, of Bethel Gilead died Oct. 2, 2003, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
He was born May 28, 1930, in Boston, Mass., the son of Gustaf and Karolina (Carlson) Mattson.
He graduated from Boston English High School and attended the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point, Long Island, N.Y. He later graduated from MIT in Cambridge, Mass., with a bachelor of science degree.
He married
Jeanne French on Dec. 23, 1961, in Ivoryton, Conn.
Mr. Mattson worked for the electric boat division of General Dynamics Corp. in Groton, Conn. He then attended both Westinghouse and General Electric’s Nuclear Propulsion schools, and furthered his education at the University of New Haven in Connecticut where he earned his MBA. He was a licensed engineer in Connecticut, retiring in 1989.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Bethel Historical Society, and active in the Bethel Food Shelf, Habitat for Humanity and the Civil War Roundtable.
Mr. Mattson enjoyed reading, model ship building and history.
Survivors include his wife of Bethel; two sons, Erik Mattson of Woburn, Mass., and Rudi Mattson of Randolph; a niece, nephew, great-niece and great-nephew.
He was predeceased by a brother and a sister.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Randolph with the Rev. Timothy Eberhardt officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Gilead cemetery.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
