John E. Gosselin Sr. Rites
SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service for John E. Gosselin Sr., 87, who died Sept. 18, 2003, was held Saturday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. Cynthia Batton, pastor of the Charlestown (N.H.) Congregational Church, officiated. St. Johns Lodge 41, F & AM, of Springfield also conducted a service. Burial followed in Pleasantview cemetery in Chester.
The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
Nicholas Stankevich Rites
SPRINGFIELD — A funeral service for Nicholas Stankevich, 80, who died Sept. 25, 2003, was held Saturday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Carmichael, pastor of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church in Springfield, officiated. Burial followed in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.
Bearers were Edward Thorburn, Raymond Buck, John Thorburn, Joseph Lavigne and William Stankevich.
Military honors were provided by Robert L. Johnson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 771 of Springfield. Elmer Kruse presented the flag.
Mr. Stankevich was predeceased by three brothers, Carl, John and Joseph Stankevich.
The Davis Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
John R. Davis
FAIRLEE — John R. Davis, 58, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Dec. 20, 1944, in Brockton, Mass., the son of Robert C. And Frances L. (Hunt) Davis.
When he was a young child, his family moved from Massachusetts to Mount Cube in Orford, N.H.
After graduating in 1962 from Orford High School, he attended New Hampshire Technical College in Manchester, N.H., where he studied electronics.
He joined the Army National Guard in Bradford and trained at Ford Dix, N.J.
He married
Barbara Bushaw on Oct. 3, 1965. The made their home in Orford, moving to Fairlee in 1966.
He worked as an electrician with Reg. Davis in Fairlee. In 1968 he began working for Frank Cody Electrical Contractors in Lebanon, N.H. He worked as chief electrician on commercial projects throughout Vermont.
In 1973 he opened his own electrical contracting business, JD Electric in Fairlee.
He enjoyed golfing, attending auctions and trips to Las Vegas, Nev. He and his wife enjoyed draft horses and horse racing at Saratoga, N.Y., and Fryeburg, Maine.
He was as former member of the Fairlee School Board and often organized fund-raisers to support scholarships for local students. He was also a member of the Hartford Elks Club, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in White River Junction and the American Legion in Lebanon, N.H.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Davis of Fairlee; a daughter, Susan Welsh of Nottingham, N.H.; three sons, Benjamin of Tampa, Fla., Robert of Wilder and Andrew of Thetford; his father of Sarasota, Fla.; a sister, Nancy Whittiker of Spencer, Mass.; a brother, William Davis of Vero Beach, Fla.; six grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; an aunt; and two uncles.
The funeral service and burial will be at the convenience of the family in Warren, N.H.
Friends may call Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee.

Kenneth Hayes
EAST MIDDLEBURY — Kenneth Hayes, 63, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
He was born Oct. 2, 1939, in Middlebury, the son of Pearl Hayes.
He was raised in Forest Dale and graduated from Brandon High School in 1958.
He married
Sandra Newton on Feb. 7, 1959. They settled in East Middlebury, where they made their home for the last 43 years.
Mr. Hayes was employed for 25 years at Palmer’s Dairy and for 12 years at Middlebury Vending.
He was a volunteer firefighter in East Middlebury for 18 years and also coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball.
Survivors include his wife of East Middlebury; his mother; two sons, Jeff Hayes of Salisbury and Mike Hayes of East Middlebury; two daughters, Kim Bilodeau of Shoreham and Machelle St. Pierre of Crown Point, N.Y.; three brothers, Ronald Hayes of Brandon, Richard Hayes of Forest Dale and David Hayes of Gardner, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the East Middlebury United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Prospect cemetery in East Middlebury.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Frederick C. Ringer Sr.
VERGENNES — Frederick Charles Ringer Sr., 82, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury after a short illness.
He was born in Vergennes on Jan. 11, 1921, the son of Charles and Grace (LeBeau) Ringer.
He graduated from Vergennes High School in 1940.
He married
Lucille Patrie on Nov. 27, 1947. She died in 1976. He married
Ruth Tucker on July 11, 1981. She died Sept. 29, 1999.
He worked for Simmonds Precision for 41 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Vergennes, a charter member of the Vergennes Rescue Squad, and a member of the Eagles Club.
He loved fishing and gardening.
Survivors include four sons, Frederick and Mike, both of Essex Junction, Patrick of Kendall Park, N.J., and Tony of Vergennes; two daughters, Mary Essex and LuAnne Maillous, both of Ferrisburgh; a stepdaughter, Connie Hobbs; two stepsons, Tommy Tucker Sr. and Charles Tucker; two brothers, Raymond Ringer of Vergennes and Vincent Ringer of Lebanon, Pa; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Blanche and Eleanor; and two brothers, Bernard and Theodore.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home.

Elizabeth Springer
MANCHESTER, N.H. — Elizabeth Kim “Lisa” Springer, 35, of Manchester, formerly of Randolph Center, Vt., died Sept. 27, 2003, at her home in Manchester.
Arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Russell A. Pierce
STARKSBORO — Russell A. Pierce, 86, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Aug. 4, 1917, the son of Marble and Annetta (Russell) Pierce.
He lived in the house on Shaker Hill where was born until he entered the Burlington Health and Rehabilitation Center early in 1998 after a hospital stay, residing there until his death.
He is survived by many family members.
The funeral service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery in Huntington.
There will be no calling hours.

Virginia D. Whitney
WEST BRAINTREE — Virginia D. “Dickie” Whitney, 75, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Sept. 30, 1927, in Concord, Mass., the daughter of Fred and Elmire (Nadeau) Dickinson.
She grew up in Roxbury and graduated from Randolph High School in 1946.
She was a lifetime area resident, settling in West Braintree in 1964. She married
Merrill Whitney in Bethel on May 29, 1947.
She had worked at Hayward’s Diner and as a bookkeeper for Allen’s Garage, and had operated The Spot Ice Cream Parlour with her husband, all in Randolph. She had been a seamstress at Van Raalte, worked at Waterbury Companies and had been a cook at the Randolph Senior Center. She was also a self-employed professional seamstress.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cooking and canning.
Survivors include her husband of West Braintree; two sons, Andrew Whitney of Brookfield and Leigh Whitney of Grafton, N.H.; a daughter, Shirley Foley of West Rutland; three sisters, Genevieve Garafalo of Meriden, Conn., Linda White of Randolph Center and Sandra White of Randolph; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a sister, Eveatte Hull.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will follow at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center.
Friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Betty Ann Baker Rites
WEST FAIRLEE — The funeral service for Betty Ann Baker, 63, who died Sept. 20, 2003, was held Saturday at the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford. Chaplain Freddie Hall officiated. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Charles R. Mills
PROCTOR — Charles R. “Chuck” Mills, 66, of Alaska, formerly of Proctor, died Aug. 29, 2003, in Alaska.
Survivors include his wife, Carmelita Mills; a son, Derek Mills; two daughters, Donna and Ann Marie; two brothers, Clyde Mills of Castleton and Gordon Mills of Chester; a sister, Marion Sheldon of Rutland; four grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at The Church at Rutland, 67 Dorr Drive, Rutland. John Racine, minister, will officiate.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Glenna B. Crosby
BRANDON — Glenna Bump Crosby, age 90, died Tuesday, September 30, 2003, in Snellville, Ga.
Mrs. Crosby was born in Forest Dale on April 23, 1913. She was the daughter of Guy and Edith (King) Bump. She was graduated from Brandon High School and Middlebury College with honors, class of 1934. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She married
Edgar S. Crosby of Whiting in 1935, who predeceased her in 1994. She was a teacher and homemaker and active in the family business, Edgar S. Crosby Inc., for many years. She had lived in Brandon, Vergennes, Lake Wales, Fla., and Snellville.
Surviving is a son, Edgar S. “Bub” Crosby Jr. and his wife Meg of Bridport, Vt.; two daughters, Adele Crosby Steele and her husband Jim of Snellville, Ga., and Eileen (Sim) Crosby Gruen and her partner Keith Burroughs of Melbourne, Australia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Beth and Dan Crosby of Bridport and Dr. Russell Gruen and his wife Dr. Theresa Yee of Darwin, Australia. Also surviving her are her sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Crosby Hastings of Lebanon, N.H., and Hilda Simonds Crosby of Whiting. She was predeceased by a grandson, Kevin Gruen; and sisters-in-law, Madeline Crosby Mills and Alberta Crosby Galvin.
A private graveside committal service and burial will take place at a later date in the family lot at Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon. There will be a celebration of her life, and those who helped her at Parkwood Nursing Home and Parkview Place Assisted Living Centers, also at a later date.
