Shirley J. Jorgensen

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Shirley J. Jorgensen, 72, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a two-year struggle with ovarian cancer.

She was born March 19, 1931, in Hanover, N.H., the daughter of Charles and Louise (Abbott) Jillson.

She attended school in Prosper, Taftsville and Woodstock.

She married Francis O. Jorgensen July 30, 1950, in West Lebanon, N.H. They had lived in White River Junction since then.

After her children were in school, Mrs. Jorgensen worked at Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital in Hanover for 12 years in the dietary and housekeeping departments. She then operated a daycare business from her home for 23 years.

She was a past member of the Hartford Emblem Club. She enjoyed camping and had camped at the Champlain Valley Campground in Swanton for 30 years. She also enjoyed knitting and collecting knickknacks, especially Studio 56 Village collectibles.

Survivors include her husband of White River Junction; three sons, Charlie Jorgensen of Fairlee, Paul Jorgensen of Lebanon, N.H., and Brian Jorgensen of White River Junction; two daughters, Marian Pero of White River Junction and Deborah Huntington of Corinth; a stepdaughter, Loretta Farnham of West Lebanon, N.H.; two sisters, Leona Wheelock of Chesterfield, N.H., and Edith Burdick of Okeechobee, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Priscilla Jorgensen, and a brother, Erwin Jillson.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Prosper cemetery in Woodstock.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bugbee Senior Center, P.O. Box 158, White River Junction, 05001.

Zelda S. Knisley

CHESTER — Zelda Sollitt Knisley, 89, died Sept. 26, 2003, at her home.

She was born Feb. 6, 1914, in Sibley, Iowa, the daughter of John and Verna Sollitt.

She came east to teach school in a one-room schoolhouse in Lincoln, where she met and married Clifford Charles Knisley Nov. 28, 1942.

She taught in Whitingham, Wilmington, Cavendish and Chester as well.

Mrs. Knisley enjoyed camping, travel, photography and quilting.

She was an active member of the Andover Community Church, where she taught for many years.

Survivors include a sister, Gladys Harms of McLain, Miss.; two daughters, Marcia Jobe of Thomasville, N.C., and Lynda Knisley of Windsor; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband and a brother, Dr. Kenneth Sollitt.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Andover Community Church.

Charles G. Hutcheon

CORNISH, N.H. — Charles Gardiner Hutcheon, 70, a longtime Claremont merchant, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

He was born in Claremont Oct. 30, 1932, the son of Allan and Margaret (Gardiner) Hutcheon, both of whom emigrated from Scotland.

He graduated from Stevens High School in 1950 and from Becker College in Worcester, Mass., in 1952.

From 1952 to 1956 he served with the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command, where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. He was stationed at both Little Rock and MacDill Air Force bases.

Mr. Hutcheon had owned businesses on Pleasant Street since 1957. He was the proprietor of A. & A.J. Hutcheon Inc., a paint and wallpaper business started by his father and his father’s cousin. He expanded the business to sell arts and crafts supplies and to offer instruction. It was through this aspect of the business that he met and befriended many area artists and craftspeople.

He had an avid interest in antiques for more than a quarter of a century. He opened Scottish Bear’s Antiques in 1994 and built and extensive collection that was known throughout New England.

He was involved in numerous local civic and cultural organizations. He was a longtime member of both the Claremont Rotary Club and the Claremont Historical Society, serving as president of both organizations. He was a member of the Claremont School Board and served on the Stevens High School Alumni Association. He was a director of the Frances J. Tolles Home, a deacon of the First Congregational Church of Claremont and a member of Hiram Lodge 9, F & AM. He served on the Claremont Historic District Commission, was a member of the Greater Claremont Chamber of Commerce and participated on search committees for civic and religious organizations.

A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Mr. Hutcheon had residences in both Claremont and Cornish.

Survivors include his wife, Joan (Whitney) Hutcheon of Cornish; a son, Kirk Hutcheon of Derry; a daughter, Sara Hutcheon of Waltham, Mass.; a niece; and a nephew.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the First Congregational Church with the Rev. Dr. Mary Elizabeth Seals, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Friends may call at the Stringer Funeral Home in Claremont on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Marion H. Brent

SPRINGFIELD — Marion H. Brent, 80, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Springfield Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was born May 2, 1923, in Richford, Vt., and was the daughter of James L. and Edna C. (Kelsey) Williamson. She attended school in Springfield and was a 1941 graduate of Springfield High School, where she also played on the basketball team.

She attended Houle’s School of Cosmetology in Concord and Manchester, N.H., and upon graduation returned to Springfield, where she worked at Aldora’s Beauty Shop, eventually purchasing the business and relocating it to her parents’ home on Center Street.

On June 15, 1945, she married the love of her life, Charles Robert “Bob” Brent, in San Diego, Calif. They most recently celebrated 58 years of marriage.

In later years she worked at Bakers Mill End Store on Chester Road, where she shared her love of sewing with all who came in.

Marion devoted her life to her family, friends and community. She enjoyed many activities including tennis, aerobics, singing, sewing, knitting and gardening. She was a dedicated and active member of the United Methodist Church in Springfield, where she served as a trustee and sang in the church choir for over 65 years. Several years ago she led the drive to renovate and repair the church chimes, which resonate through the Springfield valley to this day. She also sang in the Springfield Community Chorus for many years.

She was a member of the Ramona Chapter 3, Order of Eastern Star, where she was a past Worthy Matron and served in numerous offices. She was also a member of the Springfield Chapter 23 of the Rebekahs.

She cherished her summers at her family’s cottage in Island Pond, Vt., which was shared by many generations of the Brent & Williamson families.

She is survived by her loving husband, Bob, of Springfield; her daughter, Patricia Brent Sorenson, and her husband, George, of Meriden, N.H.; her son, Douglas, and his wife, Renee, of South Burlington, Vt.; and their families. Also by her niece, Beverly Green of Las Vegas, Nev., and her grandniece, Cindy Conners of Henderson, Nev., for both of whom she had a very special fondness. She is also survived by two cousins, two great nieces, a great nephew and their families.

She was predeceased by her parents; one sister, Alma Murphy Davis; and her in-laws.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Springfield, Vt. The Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Oakland cemetery in Springfield.

Friends may call at the church chapel on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Contributions may be made in her memory to the Springfield United Methodist Church, 10 Valley St., Vt., 05156 or to the Springfield Hospital (For Hospice Care) 25 Ridgewood Road, Springfield, Vt. 05156.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.

Howard A. Fitch

ASCUTNEY — Howard A. Fitch, 83, formerly of Ascutney, died Sept. 20, 2003, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Anderson, Ind.

He was born May 11, 1920, in Richford.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.

He was employed by Jones and Lamson Machine Tool Co. in Springfield for 47 years.

He ran his own business, Fitch Tool Co., in Indianapolis.

Mr. Fitch was an avid model railroad enthusiast and belonged to the Indianapolis Model Railroad Club.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Fitch of Anderson; two sons, Graham A. Fitch of Perkinsville and Greg Fitch of Pensacola, Fla.; a stepson, David Lendsay of Evansville, Ind.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Ascutney cemetery in Windsor.

There will be no calling hours.

Heather Bogardus

BENNINGTON — Heather Bogardus, 33, died Sept. 28, 2003, at her residence.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home.

Mary D. Morris

BENNINGTON — Mary Daigneault Morris, 72, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

She was born in Bennington May 18, 1931, the daughter of Irving Daigneault and Margaret (Lavins) Daigneault.

She received her education in Bennington and was a 1949 graduate of Bennington High School. She later received her degree in nursing as a registered nurse from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Mass.

She married Richard E. Morris on March 17, 1966, in Los Angeles.

In earlier years, she had been a nurse at several area hospitals, including the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany, N.Y. She later moved to California, where she worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles. She retired in 1976 and moved back to Bennington. While living in Bennington she worked at the Paradise Motor Inn.

She was member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. She was a lector at both Sacred Heart and the Vermont Veterans Home. She was a member of the American Nursing Association. She was a former member of the Sweet Adelaines.

She loved the Dallas Cowboys.

Survivors include her husband, Richard E. Morris of Bennington; a sister, Elizabeth Hall of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; a brother, Donald J. Daigneault of Bennington; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

The funeral will begin at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home Tuesday at 10 a.m. with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Park Lawn cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m. The vigil service will be offered at 5 p.m.

Memorial contributions may be made to either Sacred Heart School or Bennington Project Independence, through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, 05201.

David L. Mercier Rites

BENNINGTON — The funeral for David L. Mercier, who died Sept. 24, 2003, was held at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church Saturday. The Rev. Robert Lozinski, pastor, officiated. Burial took place in Park Lawn cemetery.

Organist was Donald McMahon; soloist was Monica Murray.

Reader was Leonard Anzivino. John Hurt, a nephew, offered the eulogy.

Bearers were John Hurt, David Marsala, Duncan Turner and Francis LaCroix.

At the cemetery Susan Green sounded taps. Joseph Krawczyk presented the flag to Mr. Mercier’s sisters, Linda Mercier and Juliette Hurt.

A prayer service at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home preceded the Mass.

During the calling hours Friday, the vigil service was offered by the Rev. Vincent Coppola, associate pastor of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church. Bennington Lodge of Elks 567 and members of the Vietnam Veterans of America conducted services.
