Donald B. Cornell
BURLINGTON — Donald B. Cornell, 59, died Sept. 25, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
He was born Jan. 20, 1944, in Glens Falls, N.Y., the son of Quayle and Margaret (Labare) Cornell.
He graduated from Burlington High School.
He worked for Global Industries, and did cooking and maintenance for the Essex Tavern, both in Burlington.
Mr. Cornell was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Limoges and Lori LaVigne, both of Milton; a son, Mathew Cornell of Swanton; his parents of Randolph; two sisters, Ruth Peters of Randolph and Cynthia Caswell of Georgia, Vt.; and six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne; and a sister, Elsie.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery Chapel in Randolph Center.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Lloyd C. Terwilliger
SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. — Lloyd Charles Terwilliger, 72, died Sept. 19, 2003, in Pikeville as a result of a motorcycle accident.
He was born Oct. 22, 1930, in Yonkers, N.Y., the son of Kenneth and Edna (Hunton) Terwilliger.
He graduated from Black River High School in Ludlow, Vt., in 1949.
Mr. Terwilliger was an electronics technician for Cape Kennedy, and a local electrician and plumber. He was also the owner of Lloyd’s TLC Barbecue in Shelbyville.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He was a member of the Rockledge Presbyterian Church in Rockledge, Fla., the United States Power Squadron, and the Goldwing Touring Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mary (Davis) Terwilliger of Shelbyville; a daughter, Sharon; two sisters, Lois Weisse of Brandon, Vt., and Tammy Ryan of East Fairfield, Vt.; his stepmother, Pauline Terwilliger of Vermont; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Gowen-Smith Chapel in Shelbyville.
Marion H. Brent
SPRINGFIELD — Marion H. Brent, 80, of Springfield, died Sept. 27, 2003, at the Springfield Hospital.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
Herbert W. Jamison
SPRINGFIELD — Herbert W. Jamison, 90, of Meadow Drive, died Sept. 27, 2003, at the Springfield Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
John E. Gosselin
SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service for John E. Gosselin, Sr., 87, who died Sept. 18, was held Saturday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. Cynthia Batton, pastor of the Charlestown Congregational Church officiated.
Burial followed in the Pleasantview cemetery in Chester.
Nicholas Stankevich
SPRINGFIELD — A funeral service for Nicholas Stankevich, 80, who died Sept. 25, 2003, was held Saturday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Carmichael, pastor of the Holy Trinity Orthodox Church officiated.
Burial followed in the Oakland cemetery in Springfield.
Bearers were Edward Thorburn, Raymond Buck, John Thorburn, and Joseph Lavigne.
Dennis Walter Pett
BRATTLEBORO — Dr. Dennis Walter Pett, 80, of Brattleboro, died Sept. 24, 2003, at St. Luke Hospital in Florence, Kentucky, after a brief illness.
Dr. Pett was born Apr. 11, 1923, in Wexley, Kent, England to Walter and Kathleen Pett.
The family emigrated to Detroit, Michigan in 1926, where Pett graduated from Cooley High School. He served in Europe in the Army Air Corps from 1942-1945, was awarded a Bronze Star, and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Pett attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls where he met his future wife, Jean Wilma Crowell of Chelsea, Vermont. The next year he continued his studies at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York.
In 1949, Dennis Pett began a long career at Indiana University in Bloomington, working in the IU photo lab, and received his undergraduate degree in education in 1951. Pett began serving as Instructor of Education in 1952, earning his mater’s degree in 1953. In 1959, he moved his family to Ibadan, Nigeria, where he was visiting professor, helping to establish audio-visual media departments at various Nigerian colleges and universities.
After returning to Bloomington in 1964, Pett earned his doctorate in Education 1966 and became Associate Professor in 1977, and was later named Director of Instructional Systems Technology. He became Professor Emeritus in 1989. Among his numerous awards and citations was the Herman Frederic Lieber Award for teaching excellence in 1976.
Following his retirement in 1989, he and his wife traveled widely and kept in close touch with many of his former students around the world. The Petts settled in Brattleboro, Vermont in 1990, where they remained until his death.
Passionately devoted to his family, friends, colleagues, and students, Dennis Pett was a man of remarkable good humor and quick wit, tremendous energy, limitless generosity, and infectious enthusiasm. Consistent with his modest demeanor, he eschewed the academic titles he earned, preferring to be known to all simply as “Denny.” Chief among his wide variety of hobbies and interests were gardening, stamp collecting, and photography.
Denny is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean Crowell Pett of Brattleboro, Vermont and his four children: Kathleen M. Pett of Rutland, Vermont, Judith P. Gaskill of Union, Kentucky, Joel W. Pett of Lexington, Kentucky, and James D. Pett of Falls Church, Virginia. He also is survived by five grandchildren: Brian R. Kinzie and James C. Gaskill of Union, A. Joseph Kinzie of Lexington, and Nicole K. Adams and Alexander G. Adams of Rutland.
A memorial service will be held in the coming weeks at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Bloomington, where Dr. Pett was a charter member.
In lieu of gifts, the family has asked that contributions be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, NY NY 10163.
Mary O. Mooney
Mary O. Mooney, 88, of Rutland died Sept. 28, 2003, at the home of her son, Raymond M. Mooney.
She was the wife of Raymond R. Mooney, who died in 1965.
Funeral services are pending at the Clifford Funeral Home.
Marion Wood
HYDEVILLE — Marion J. Wood, 95, died Sept. 28, 2003, at Misty Heather Morn Community Care Home in Hydeville.
Funeral services are pending for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Ducharme Funeral Home in Castleton.
Patricia Scott
Patricia (Joyce) Scott, 75, of Rutland died Sept. 28, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert K. Scott, who died in 1968.
Arrangements are pending at the Clifford Funeral Home.
Elder H. Haapala
Elder H. “Hap” Haapala, 73, died Sept. 27, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Elmont, Long Island, N.Y., July 30, 1930, the son of Henry and Hilda (Kengas) Haapala.
He was a graduate of Sewanaka High School in Floral Park, N.Y.
Mr. Haapala was employed by General Electric Corp., Rutland Regional Medical Center as a security guard, and by the state of Vermont unemployment office.
He was a member of Christ the King Church.
He was a baseball player for the Rutland Royals in 1947 and later signed with the New York Yankees. He was a center fielder on the Yankees AAA farm team along with future stars such as Mickey Mantle, Tom Morgan and Gil McDougald.
Survivors include his former wife, Mary (Ragosta) Haapala of Rutland; a sister, Anne Gaynor of Franklin Square, N.Y.; a niece; and two nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Arnold Haapala.
A memorial Mass is pending at Christ the King Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King School, 66 S. Main St., Rutland, 05701.

Leonard M. Bell Sr.
Leonard M. Bell Sr., 56, of Rutland died Sept. 27, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born in Rutland Oct. 12, 1946, the son of Dana and Eleanor (Hebert) Bell.
He was a 1964 graduate of Rutland High School.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War.
He married
Mary (O’Brien) Bell Oct. 3, 1967, in Cutler, Maine.
Mr. Bell was a systems operator in the computer department at Rutland Regional Medical Center for 22 years.
Surviving are his wife of Rutland; a daughter, Tina Bell of Danby; a son, Leonard Bell Jr. of North Bennington; two brothers, Bernard Bell of Rutland and Thomas Bell of Manchester, Md., a granddaughter; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Douglas Bell and Dana Bell.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Bishop, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Rutland, will officiate. Burial will follow with military honors at Calvary cemetery in Rutland.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marion F. Hughes Rites
POULTNEY — A funeral service for Marion F. Hughes, 85, who died Sept. 25, 2003, was held Sunday at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney. The Rev. Stephen R. Payne, pastor of the Untied Baptist Church of Poultney, officiated. Burial followed in Poultney cemetery.
Bearers were Steven Brown, Keith Roberts, Bernie Vladyka, Clement Gaboriault and Daniel Pond.
Following the burial, a reception was held at the United Baptist Church of Poultney.
