Marion F. Hughes
POULTNEY — Marion F. Hughes, age 85, of Poultney, passed away on September 25, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury, Vt., with her loving family at her side.
Mrs. Hughes was born in Hampton, N.Y., on November 24, 1917, the daughter of the late Charles and Ruth (Utridge) Fellows. She was married
to Joseph P. Brown, who died in 1949 and then married
her second husband, Frederick Hughes on October 19, 1956. Mrs. Hughes lived most of her life in Hampton, N.Y., and Poultney, Vt. She was employed as a secretary for many years for the Roberts Gas and Electric Company in Poultney. Mrs. Hughes was a faithful member of the United Baptist Church of Poultney and a former member of the Women’s Union at the Poultney Baptist Church. She lived a life of service to both her family and to the community of Poultney.
Mrs. Hughes is survived by one son, David Brown and his wife Carol of Northfield, Mass.; one daughter, Kathleen Anderson and her husband Robert of Bridport, Vt.; one grandson, James Anderson of Anchorage, Alaska; three granddaughters, Susan Scott of Northfield, Mass., Lori A. York of Holliston, Mass., and Judi Collons of Erving, Mass.; and six great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her first husband, Joseph P. Brown in 1949, and her second husband, Frederick Hughes in 2002.
Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home, 266 Allen Avenue, Poultney. A funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Stephen R. Payne, Pastor of the United Baptist Church of Poultney, will officiate.
Interment will follow at the family plot in the Poultney cemetery.

Mrs. Hill-Dawley Rites
The funeral service for Justine M. Hill-Dawley, 75, of Mount Holly, who died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, was held Friday at the First Baptist Church in Rutland. The Reverend Bruce A. Bishop, pastor, officiated.
Readers were Alison Wilder, David Wilder and Keith Richardson. Joe Surething read a poem that he had written.
Soloist was the Rev. Bishop. Organist was Mary Millett.
Ushers were Michael Dawley and Tim Dawley.
Burial was in the Colburn cemetery in Shrewsbury with the Rev. Bishop reading the committal prayers.
Bearers were Jared Surething, Joshua Surething, David Wilder, Braden Wilder, Kyle Perry, Donald Parker, Pete Hill and Howard Hill.
The Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Henry S. Hewitt Rites
HUBBARDTON — The memorial service for Henry S. Hewitt, 67, who died Sept. 23, 2003, was held Friday at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven. The Rev. Gordon Naser, pastor of the United Church of West Rutland, officiated. Burial followed in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.
Members of Lee Lodge 30, F&AM, of Castleton conducted a fraternal service at the funeral home.
American Legion Post 50 of Castleton provided military honors. The post commander presented the flag to Mr. Hewitt’s mother, Mrs. Anna Hewitt.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Marion E. Tarbell Rites
BELMONT — The graveside service for Marion E. Tarbell, 81, who died Sept. 23, 2003, was held Friday in Mechanicsville cemetery in Belmont with the Rev. Glen Davis officiating.
Pallbearers were Raymond Tarbell, Rodney Tarbell, Steve Haines, Lawrence Manley, Douglas Manley and Donald Tarbell.
Friends and family were invited back to Donald Tarbell’s home in Belmont following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Ludlow.
Virginia Whitney
BRAINTREE — Virginia Whitney, 75, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Richard Ardell
PERU — Richard Ardell, husband of Barbara, died Sept. 26, 2003, at his home.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester.
William E. Wilder Sr.
WESTMINSTER — William E. Wilder Sr., 72, died Sept. 25, 2003, at Cheshire Medical Center in Keene, N.H.
He was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Grafton, the son of William and Marion (Hubbell) Wilder.
He attended schools in Westminster and Bellows Falls.
Mr. Wilder worked for the Department of Transportation for 26 years, retiring a few years ago.
He was a member of the North American Family Camping Association, past treasurer of Mantowa Chapter, past vice president of Springfield, Vermont Chapter 1, member of the board of directors of Springfield, Vermont Chapter 1, and deputy state director of North American Family Camping Association in New Hampshire. He was also a member of the USA BeeKeepers Association.
He enjoyed traveling in his motor home and hunting with his sons. He was a Redskins and Red Sox fan.
Survivors include his wife, Marion (Campbell) Wilder of Westminster; three sons, John Wilder of St. Albans, William Wilder Jr. and Tim Wilder, both of Westminster; and five grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Wilder; and a sister, Marion Wilder.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls. Burial will take place in Westminster cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurses, 1 Hospital Court, Bellows Falls, 05101, or the Veterans Hospital, White River Junction, 05001.

Mary D. Morris
BENNINGTON — Mary Daigneault Morris, 72, died Sept. 26, 2003, at Bennington Health & Rehabilitation Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Nora M. Coonradt Rites
SHAFTSBURY — The funeral service for Nora May Coonradt, 75, who died Sept. 24, 2003, was held Friday at the First United Methodist Church of Shaftsbury with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Center Shaftsbury cemetery.
Pallbearers were Arnold Harrington, Joseph Coonradt, James Coonradt, Jay Coonradt, Robert Pratt and Charles Becker. Honorary bearers were Chester Harrington and Bob Perrone.
A time of fellowship and refreshment for family and friends was held in the Michael C. Paulin Room at the church following the service.
Members of the Taconic Grange 491 conducted a memorial service led by Ed Luce, master, and Pauline Jacobs, chaplain.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.
Edwin R. Maroney Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Edwin R. Maroney, who died Sept. 23, 2003, was celebrated Friday at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church with the Rev. Vincent Coppola, associate pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Park Lawn cemetery.
Organist was Don McMahon and cantor was Monica Murray.
Bearers were Matthew Maroney, Brian Maroney Jr., Kyle Maroney, Arthur Devlin, James Joyce and Christopher Watters.
A prayer service was held at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home prior to the funeral Mass.
A reception for family and friends was held at the Bennington Elks Lodge following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Arnold E. Brileya
SHOREHAM — Arnold Eli “Stub” Brileya, 69, passed away Friday, September 26, 2003, at Porter Hospital in Middlebury.
He was born in Shoreham, Vt., January 14, 1934, the son of Arthur and Beatrice (Spaulding) Brileya.
Mr. Brileya was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the United States Air Force.
Arnold worked for the Shoreham Telephone Company for 37 ˝ years.
He was a member of the Brandon American Legion Post 55 in Brandon and the Middlebury VFW. He was a former deacon of the Shoreham Congregational Church and a former Volunteer Fireman with the Shoreham Fire Dept.
Stub loved camping, traveling and fishing.
He was a kind and generous individual who always had a smile on his face.
Surviving is his wife, Betty (Derrick) Brileya, whom he married
in 1990; one son, Steven Brileya and his wife Sue of Shoreham; three daughters, Holly Jo Brileya of Forest Dale, Jenni Brileya of Rutland and Jodie Brileya of Rutland; one sister, Thelma Christian of Orwell; one stepdaughter, Melissa Mumford of Middlebury; two brothers-in-law, Harley Rice and Edwin Rice; one grandson, Paul Magro of Rutland; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is predeceased by one special nephew, Elmer Bigelow; and his sisters, Elsie Rice, Ruth Rice and Lucille Bigelow.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Shoreham Congregational Church. Graveside committal services and burial will follow in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham.
Calling hours will be held Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.

Harold L. Taylor
BRISTOL — Harold Lee Taylor, 71, died Sept. 24, 2003, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury with lung cancer.
He was born May 7, 1932, in Burlington, the son of Lee and Lila (Dunshee) Taylor.
He attended schools in Bristol.
Mr. Taylor worked as a laborer most of his adult life. He worked for Mike Burke in Bristol for more than 20 years and for various other contractors including Milo Lathrop, Dick Austin and George Purinton.
He enjoyed the time he spent with the Ogilvie girls and being made an honorary member of their family.
Survivors include several cousins.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Burial will follow in Greenwood cemetery in Bristol.
A reception will take place at Pleasant Hills Fellowship Room in Bristol following the service.
Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
