Edmond J. Stebbins
CHIPPENHOOK — Edmond J. Stebbins, 70, died Sept. 25, 2003, at his home.
He was the husband of Judith (Lee) Stebbins of Chippenhook.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Florence A. Jones
FAIR HAVEN — The memorial service for Florence Adams “Honey” Jones, 98, who died July 20, 2003, in Florida, will be held Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven. The Rev. Ashley Meade, pastor of the Dresden Baptist Church in Clemons, N.Y., will officiate. Burial of cremains will follow in Sciota cemetery in Whitehall, N.Y.
She was the daughter of James and Carrie (Tracy) Adams.
She married
Idris Jones on Nov. 10, 1924. He died in 1989.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Burton of Gloversville, N.Y.; a son, Dr. Robert Jones of Penn Yan, N.Y.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
She was predeceased by five sisters and four brothers.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Leonard N. Thresher
RANDOLPH — Leonard N. Thresher, 78, died Sept. 24, 2003, at his home.
He was born Nov. 25, 1924, in Rochester, the son of Leonard and Emma (French) Thresher.
He was educated in Bethel and Randolph schools.
He married
Helen Walton on July 2, 1955.
Mr. Thresher farmed with his father, was a logger, drove trucks for Harold Rogers Trucking, worked at Fritzel Toys and Vermont Castings, was a self-employed carpenter, and for 15 years worked in the finishing department at Ethan Allen, retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Baptist Fellowship in Randolph and a past member of the Thetford Grange.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and yard work.
Survivors include his wife of Randolph; two stepdaughters, Diana Clubb of Idelwild, Mich., and Althea Clogston of Orford, N.H.; a brother, Leslie Thresher of Roxbury; two sisters, Polly Chromb of New York and Alice McIntyre of Brattleboro; and 13 step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a step grandson and a stepdaughter.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Baptist Fellowship with the Rev. Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview cemetery in Bethel.
Calling hours will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home.

Albert E. Barcelow
SOUTH ROYALTON — Albert Ernest Barcelow, 79, died Sept. 24, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea.
Nicholas Stankevich
SPRINGFIELD — Nicholas Stankevich, 80, died Sept. 25, 2003, at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in White River Junction.
He was born Aug. 10, 1923, in Perkinsville, the son of Constantine and Sophie (Ripchick) Stankevich.
He attended schools in Perkinsville and Springfield.
Mr. Stankevich worked for the John T. Slack Co. in Springfield for many years, and was in charge of the union. He later moved to New York City and worked as a hotel clerk.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.
Survivors include a sister, Zina Thorburn of Springfield; a brother, Walter Stankevich of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John Stankevich and Joseph Stankevich.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Peter Carmichael, rector of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland cemetery.
Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Chapel.

Paul J. Cardwell
NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — Paul John Cardwell, 95, died Sept. 24, 2003.
He was born July 31, 1908, in Shelburne Falls, Mass., the son of John and Victoria Cardwell.
Mr. Cardwell and his wife established and operated Okemo Lantern Lodge in Proctorsville, Vt., from 1957 to 1979. He retired from General Electric Aircraft Division in Ludlow, Vt., in 1973.
Survivors include two sons, John of Murrysville, Pa., and William of St. Louis; a daughter, Sandra Towne of Lady Lake, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Cardwell, in 1994.
Cremation services were private with burial at the Church of the Annunciation in Ludlow, Vt.

Irene V. Lavoie Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The funeral Mass for Irene V. Lavoie, 89, who died Sept. 21, 2003, was celebrated Wednesday at St. Mary’s Church in Springfield. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, and the Rev. Joseph Lagor of White River Junction co-officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Organist was Jay Chandler, and cantor and soloist was Stan Smith.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Rosalie M. Nason Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Rosalie M. Nason, 65, who died Sept. 22, 2003, was held Thursday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield with the Rev. Thomas Hiltsley, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Plain cemetery in Perkinsville.
Bearers were Shawn Hastings, David Hildreth, Wade Sheltra, J.C. Whitney, Alec Bass and Daniel Stoughton.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Anna M. Sweet Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Anna Mae Sweet, who died Sept. 19, 2003, was held Wednesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. George Eberly, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, officiating. Burial followed in White Chapel cemetery.
Bearers were Kevin Cross, Dale Harrington, Brandon Harrington, Clint Brock, Ron Lyle and Wayne Powers.
A reception was held at the home of Mrs. Sweet’s son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Beverly Sweet, on Chapel Road in Bennington.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Blanche E. Burke
BLUFFTON, S.C. — Blanche Elizabeth Julius Burke, 83, died Sept. 24, 2003, at Hilton Head Medical Center, Hilton Head Island.
She was born May 13, 1920, in Orwell, Vt., the daughter of Agnes (Lapshere) and James Julius.
She was a member of the Bluffton United Methodist Church, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Bluffton Marine Rescue Squadron.
Survivors include her husband, Gordon Burke of Bluffton; a son, Roger Ryan of Rutland, Vt.; three daughters, Patricia Farmer of Hazlehurst, Ga., Linda Adams of Castleton, Vt., and Marsha Davis of Bluffton; a brother, Douglas Julius of Beaufort; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Sauls Funeral Home Chapel in Bluffton. Burial will take place in St. Luke’s cemetery in Okatie.
Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edmond J. Stebbins
CHIPPENHOOK — Edmond J. Stebbins, 70, a former resident of Rutland and Brattleboro, died Sept. 25, 2003, at his home.
He was born Nov. 13, 1932, in Colchester, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Blanchard) Stebbins.
He graduated from West Rutland High School and Rutland Business College.
He was a driver for Maislin Transportation Co. in St. Johnsbury for 40 years, retiring in 1998.
Mr. Stebbins was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, serving during the Korean War.
He was a member of St. Bridget’s Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648, American Legion Post 31, and the Moose Club. He was also a member of the Marine Corps League, commandant of the Edson Detachment and Marine Corps League, and first commandant of the Vermont Department.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and reading.
Survivors include his wife, Judith (Lee) Stebbins; three sons, Edmond Stebbins Jr. of Nashua, N.H., Christopher Stebbins of Eugene, Ore., and Scott Stebbins of Perkinsville; two daughters, Karen Pinchon of British Columbia and Diane Stebbins of Chandler, Ariz.; a sister, Claire McAllister of Elizabethton, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Anne Foley and Rose Burke.
The memorial service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Bridget’s Church in West Rutland. Burial with military honors will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph.
Calling hours will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
