Mary Cross
WHITE CREEK, N.Y. — Mary Cross, 68, died June 16, 2003, at her residence.
She was born April 18, 1935, in Hoosick Falls, the daughter of Richard and Mary (Shanahan) Sargood.
She attended St. Mary’s Academy and Hoosick Falls High School.
She married
Edward Cross Sr. on July 14, 1956, in Hoosick Falls.
Mrs. Cross and her husband owned and operated Cross Oil in Bennington, Vt., during the 1960s and 1970s. She retired from Union Carbide Corp. in Bennington where she worked for many years.
She enjoyed baking and cooking.
Survivors include her husband of White Creek; four daughters, Helen Telford of White Creek, Lynn Cushing of Bennington, Vt., Phyllis Shays of Hoosick Falls and Denise Cross of Albany; two sons, Richard Cross and Perle Cross, both of White Creek; a sister, Margaret Rousseau of Hoosick Falls; two brothers, Richard Sargood Jr. of Pittstown and William Sargood of Hoosick Falls; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Edward Cross Jr., in January 2003; and two brothers, Robert Sargood and Donald Sargood.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington with the Rev. Michael DeMasi officiating. Burial will take place in Center Shaftsbury cemetery in Shaftsbury, Vt.
Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Family and friends are invited to Jermain Hall in White Creek for a time of sharing and refreshments following the service.

Bert C. Papineau
Bert C. Papineau, 76, of Rutland, died June 20, 2003, at his home.
He was born April 17, 1927, in Rutland, the son of Arthur and Marion (Hyland) Papineau.
He graduated from Rutland High School.
Mr. Papineau worked for Dragon Shoes in Bennington, I. Miller Shoes Inc. of New York City, and later for Brooks Brothers Clothing for several years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Oper-ations.
He attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and was a former member of American Legion Post 31 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 648.
Survivors include his companion, Mary Lou Stevens of Rutland; three brothers, Richard Papineau and Thomas Papineau, both of Rutland, and Howard Papineau of Rutland Town; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mildred Fox; and four brothers, Harold Papineau, Donald Papineau, Arthur Papineau and Robert Papineau.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery.
Friends may call Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Clifford Funeral Home.

Stanley A. Pyenta
POULTNEY — Stanley A. Pyenta, age 93, of Poultney, passed away on June 20, 2003, at his residence in Poultney.
Mr. Pyenta was born on January 31, 1910, in Ottynia, Poland, son of the late Stephan and Mary Pyenta. He came to the United States from Poland with his mother on the SS Prince Frederick Wilhelm in 1910, when he was 2 months old. Mr. Pyenta lived in Granville until he was 9 years old, on the Switch and then moved with his family to North Poultney. He worked as a foreman for the Vermont Structural Slate Company from 1927 to 1987. Mr. Pyenta married
his wife, Mary T. (Dydo) Pyenta in November of 1933 in West Rutland. Mr. Pyenta was loved and respected by all who knew him, and will be remembered as a beloved husband, devoted father, and a loving “Dzadzi” to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Mr. Pyenta is survived by his beloved wife, Mary T. (Dydo) Pyenta; one son, Stanley J. Pyenta of Poultney; one daughter, Mary J. Perry of Monroe, Conn.; four grandsons, Nicholas Novia of Bridgeport, Conn., Michael Novia of New Canaan, Conn., Richard Novia of Newtown, Conn., and Derek Perry of Danbury, Conn.; one granddaughter, Judith Gonsalves of Avon, Conn.; four step grandchildren, Scott Perry, James Perry, Sandra Zalik and Stephanie Peterson; three sisters, Sophie Macura of Granville, N.Y., Stella Wierzbicki of Rutland, and Rose Krivicki of Stratford, Conn.; and 12 great-grandchildren. Stanley was predeceased by six brothers, Stephan, Walter, John, Joseph, Peter and Paul Pyenta; and two sisters, Julia Bush and Mary Kasprzak.
Relatives and friends may call at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney on Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday at St. Raphael’s Church in Poultney. Burial will follow in the Pyenta family plot in St. Raphael’s cemetery in Poultney.

Alphonse R. Poremski Rites
FLORENCE — The funeral Mass for Alphonse F. Poremski, 86, who died June 16, 2003, was celebrated Friday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Pittsford. The Rev. James Lawrence, pastor of St. Alphonsus Church, officiated. Burial followed in St. Alphonsus Catholic cemetery in Pittsford.
Organist was Stu James and soloist was Caitlin Christiana.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford.
Raymond N. Bashaw
SPRINGFIELD — Raymond N. Bashaw, 66, died June 19, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Oct. 18, 1936, in Charlestown, N.H., the son of Ralph and Nina (Wilson) Bashaw.
He attended schools in Charles-town, N.H.
He married
Janice McNeil on July 3, 1986, in Springfield.
Mr. Bashaw worked at the Jewell Brook Woolen Mill in Ludlow for many years, and later at the Dartmouth Woolen Mill in Clare-mont, N.H.
He served in the National Guard during the Korean War.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife of Springfield; three stepsons, Donald Draleau of St. Johnsbury, Kelly Swan and Kerry Swan, both of Springfield; four stepdaughters, Laura Sylvester, Shelley Hall and Sherry Swan, all of Springfield, and Lisa Wright of Claremont, N.H.; a son, Raymond Kinchen; a daughter, Dorothy Smith; a brother, Carroll Bashaw of Charlestown, N.H.; a sister, Genevieve Schroeder of Springfield; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne Bashaw; and a sister, Eunice Blake.
The graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Oakland cemetery in Springfield. The Rev. Dana Longever, pastor of the Assembly of God Church, will officiate.
Calling hours will be private.

Patricia A. Barr
SHAFTSBURY — Patricia Ann Barr, 52, died June 19, 2003.
She was born Aug. 26, 1950, in Chicago, Ill.
She graduated from Bennington College in 1971, and began a four-year clerkship for admission to the bar in 1972. She was admitted to the Vermont Bar in 1976.
She married
Rolf Sternberg on Aug. 9, 1980.
Ms. Barr co-founded the law firm now known as Barr, Sternberg, Moss, Lawrence, Silver & Saltonstall in Bennington.
She was a member of the State Board of Bar Examiners for six years, was appointed to the State Board of Education for two separate terms, served as one of the original members of the Vermont Task Force on Gender Bias in the Legal System, and was the founder and chairwoman of the Vermont Israel Agricultural Exchange.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer, Ms. Barr became one of the original directors of the National Breast Cancer Coalition in Wash-ington, D.C. She was also a member of the National Cancer Institute’s Informed Consent Working Group and served as a member of the Secretary of Health and Human Services Commission on Genetic Testing Task Force under Secretary Donna Shalala in the Clinton administration.
She was also a political activist, and at the time of her death she was the co-chairwoman of Americans for Peace Now. On the local level, Ms. Barr was co-founder of the Institute of Medical Humanism.
Survivors include her husband; her children, Shira and Tava Stern-berg of Shaftsbury; her mother, Marie Barr of Bennington; her sister, Teri Barr of Oakland, Calif.; and her brother, Michael Barr of Libertyville, Ill.
The family will be sitting Shiva for three nights from Sunday through Tuesday.
The funeral will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Usdan Gallery at Bennington College in Bennington.

Theresa M. Grant
BENNINGTON — Theresa M. Grant, 87, died June 20, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
She was born Feb. 1, 1916, in Brock-ton, Mass., the daughter of Thomas and Marion (Roy) Marceau.
She received her education at Bennington High School.
She married
William Grant on July 4, 1934, in Bennington.
Mrs. Grant and her husband owned and operated King Company Cleaners in Bennington for 50 years.
She was a member of Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sale Church.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing and oil painting.
Survivors include her husband of Bennington; three daughters, Ruth Ann Amick of Concord, N.H., Susan Moriarty of Duxbury, Mass., and Deborah MacDonald of Shaftsbury; a son, Thomas Grant of Raymertown, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Francis Marceau.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with a prayer and continue at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. with a Mass celebrated by the Rev. Vincent Coppola. Burial will follow in Park Lawn cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The wake service will be offered at 5:30 p.m.

BENNINGTON — Lewis C. Carpenter, 91, died June 20, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehab-ilitation Center.

CHESTER — The funeral service for Ada I. Paquin, 97, who died June 16, 2003, was held Friday at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester with the Rev. Thomas Charl-ton officiating. Burial followed in Maple Grove cemetery in Weston.
Pallbearers were Paul Paquin III, John Garnett, Mitchell Matulonis and Skip Colburn.
