Michael W. Johnson
BRADFORD — Michael W. Johnson, 39, a 16-year veteran of the Vermont State Police, died June 15, 2003, in the line of duty.
He was born Dec. 11, 1963, in Newark, N.J., the son of Walter and Marilyn (Griffith) Johnson.
He graduated from Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans, attended Norwich University and graduated from the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pa., in 1986.
He served as a Vermont auxiliary state policeman during his summer vacations while attending college. In 1986, Mr. Johnson was hired as a Vermont State Police trooper and assigned to the Colchester barracks. He later served in the Lamoille and Killington outposts until 1997, when he earned the rank of sergeant and was assigned to the Bradford barracks.
Mr. Johnson was an avid basketball player and sports enthusiast. He was a senior basketball all-star at the 1982 Alhambra Game between Vermont and New Hampshire, earning Most Valuable Player of the Vermont team.
He was a former boy’s basketball coach at Mount Mansfield High School and Whitcomb High School. He was active in the Bradford Youth Sports Program and coached the Oxbow boys seventh grade basketball team, the third and fourth grade girls basketball teams, and local soccer and ski teams. Known as the “Mayor of Bradford,” he was also a regular performer at dances, weddings and anniversary parties with his disc jockey business, Magic Mike DJ.
Survivors include his wife, Kerrie (Driscoll) Johnson, whom he married
on July 27, 1991, in Jericho; a daughter, Reilly Johnson and two sons, Grady and McKendrick Johnson, all of Bradford; his parents of St. Albans; two sisters, Patricia Smith of Weybridge and Linda Lewis of St. Albans; three brothers, Glenn of St. Albans, Matthew of Burlington and Daniel of Pennsylvania; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at noon at Oxbow High School Gymnasium in Bradford with the Rev. Harvey Bartlett officiating. A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family.
Friends may call Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Hale Funeral Home in Bradford.

Robert H. Ostrander
GRANVILLE, N.Y. — Robert Henry Ostrander, 74, died June 16, 2003, at York Hospital in York, Maine.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington, Vt.
Alphonse F. Poremski
FLORENCE — Alphonse F. Poremski, 86, died unexpectedly Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home in Florence.
Mr. Poremski was born on November 1, 1916, in West Rutland, the son of Kazimer and Rose (Blechowicz) Poremski.
He was a graduate of West Rutland High School and Rutland Business College. He worked on his father’s farm in Florence for over 30 years before going to work as a carpenter for the John A. Russell Corp., retiring in 1982. Al was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he enjoyed the outdoors.
He married
Stella Markowski on October 26, 1940, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Stella of Florence; two daughters, Louise and her husband Ronald Davis, and Barbara and her husband Lee Champine, all of Florence; one son, Sonny Poremski and his wife Michelle of Florence; one brother, Bernard Poremski of Bomoseen; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.
There will be no calling hours.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 20, at 11 a.m. at Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church in Pittsford. Burial will follow in Saint Alphonsus Catholic cemetery in Pittsford.

Daniel R. Chobanian
SAUGUS, Mass. — Daniel R. Chobanian, 78, died June 14, 2003.
He was born July 15, 1924, in Chelsea, the son of Kaloos and Zartar (Torosian) Chobanian.
He was educated at a men’s fashion design school in Boston.
Mr. Chobanian worked as a garment design cutter for more than 55 years for Personal Sportswear, David Smith Clothing of Lynn and M.H. Fine Maternity of Allston.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II. He received the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a life member of the Saugus Elks, the Saugus Disabled American Veterans, and the Fox Hill Yacht Club. He was also a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Helen (Kayajanian) Chobanian; two daughters, Carol Dupuis of Rutland, Vt., and Joanne Chobanian of Saugus; two sons, George Chobanian of Maine and Daniel Chobanian of Saugus; nine grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, his twin, Sarkis Chobanian, Robert Chobanian and John Chobanian.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Bisbee-Porcella Funeral Home in Saugus. Burial will follow in Riverside cemetery in Saugus.

Hazel Densmore
MARLTON, N.J. — Hazel (Wood) Densmore, 93, died June 16, 2003, at her home.
She was born Dec. 1, 1909, in Fair Haven, Vt., the daughter of George and Mary (Eaton) Mahar.
She graduated from Fair Haven High School in 1927 and College of New Rochelle in 1931.
She taught at the Brandon Training School in Brandon, Vt., for many years, and she and her husband, Robert Wood, owned and operated the Castle Inn in Fair Haven.
Survivors include a daughter, Roxann McDonald of Voorhees; a son, Wilbur Wood of Meriden, Conn.; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Wood, and her second husband, Rollin Densmore; and five brothers and sisters.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven. The Rev. Charles Danielson, administrator of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton Vt., will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in Fair Haven.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Alice Burton Rites
The funeral service for Alice Emma Elizabeth (Gutzwiller) Burton, 78, of Rutland, who died June 14, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Clifford Funeral Home. The Rev. Edward Hackett, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial followed in Maplewood cemetery in Stockbridge.
Bearers were Patrick Burton, Benjamin Burton, Thomas Coonan and Jeremy Wade.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Elaine B. Keinonen Rites
BRANDON — The funeral service for Elaine Blanche Keinonen, 79, who died June 12, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Congregational Church in Brandon. The graveside service followed in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford. The Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiated.
Organist was Bonnie Johnson.
Bearers were Brice Cummings, Doug Cummings, Justin Brown, John Scoskie, Casey Scoskie and Rourke Harte.
The family received friends at the church hall for a time of fellowship and reflection following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
Ada Paquin
CHESTER — Ada Paquin, 97, died June 16, 2003, at Springfield Hospital.
She was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Weston, the daughter of Orvis and Mary (Stevens) Hart.
She received her education in the Weston and Brattleboro school systems.
She married
Ernest Paquin in 1929 in Perkinsville.
Mrs. Paquin cared for children while she lived in Perkinsville, Springfield, Oklahoma, Keene, N.H., Schenectady, N.Y., and Chester.
Survivors include her niece, Arleyne McAulay; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband in 1986; a son, Paul Paquin; two brothers, Henry Hart and Willard Hart; and six sisters, Emma Cummings, Violet McIntyre, Flora Becore, Stella Marro, Eva Downey and Beatrice Proux.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Home.
Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Anne M. Carroll
CHESTER — Anne M. Carroll, 80, died June 16, 2003, at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend.
She was born March 13, 1923, in West Rutland, the daughter of Mildred and Victor Lee.
She received her education in West Rutland.
Mrs. Carroll worked at New York Life Insurance in Brooklyn, N.Y., for a few years, and later as an assistant town clerk for the town of Chester.
She was active at St. Joseph’s Church and was a member of the Altar Society. She was also a volunteer at Springfield Hospital.
Survivors include four sons, William Carroll of Cottontown, Tenn., John Carroll Jr. of Chester, Leonard Carroll of Palm Coast, Fla., and Chris Carroll of Rockingham; two brothers, Charles Lee of San Francisco and Robert Lee of Port Orange, Fla.; a sister, Shirley Deserio of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five grandsons; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Carroll Sr., in 1996; a son, Michael; a brother, George; and a sister, Mary Halvorson.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Chester. Burial will follow in Brookside cemetery in Chester.
Calling hours will be held today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes in Chester.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Adams & Kenney Funeral Homes.
Stephen F. Cole
MANCHESTER VILLAGE — Stephen Francis Cole, 74, died June 15, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.
He was born July 6, 1928, in Whitman, Mass., the son of Arthur and Lila (Chamberlain) Cole.
He was the current town administrator in Winhall. Prior to moving to Vermont, he was the senior real estate officer for the city of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before retiring.
Mr. Cole was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
He was a member of the Manchester Congregational Church and sang in the church choir.
He enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Carole (Coffey) Cole; a son, David Cole of Fort Lauderdale; two daughters, Pamela Bradley of Whispering Pine, N.C., and Stephanie Smith of Atlanta; two stepdaughters, Lisa Cole-Powell of Phoenix, Ariz., and Linda Palumbo of Long Beach, Calif.; and a sister, June Carr of Vero Beach, Fla.; and three grandchildren.
Services will be private.
There will be no calling hours.
