Phillip Lovell
SPRINGFIELD — Phillip “Irvin” Lovell, 77, died June 4, 2003, at his home.
He was born Jan. 29, 1926, in Springfield, the son of Hubert and Hazel (Moore) Lovell.
He attended school in Springfield.
Mr. Lovell was a self-employed logger for many years, and later worked as a mechanic and truck driver for Rouse Transportation and Dairy Transport.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending his cows and working on his land.
Survivors include his wife, Zada (Murray) Lovell; five sons, Hubert Lovell and Duane Amsden of Rockingham, Charles Lovell of Westminster, James Lovell of Springfield and Ronald Amsden of Charlestown; two daughters, Donita Benner of North Springfield and Suzanne Lovell of Hartland; three sisters, Katherine Emerson of Springfield, Frances Lewis of Essex Junction and Dorothy Graves of South Burlington; 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; two nephews and three nieces.
There will be no services.
Katherine S. Frey
SAXTONS RIVER — Katherine S. Frey, 86, died June 4, 2003, at her home.
She was born Oct. 4, 1916, in Saxtons River, the daughter of Harry and Blanche (Swift) Simonds.
She attended schools in Bellows Falls and graduated in 1934.
She married
Edgar Frey on Sept. 25, 1937. He died in 2001.
Mrs. Frey was a member of the Saxtons River Mother’s Club, the Nature Club, Historical Society, and the Women’s Fellowship of Christ’s Church. She was also active with the Girl Scouts, serving as a den mother.
Survivors include a son, James Frey of Putney; a daughter, Dianne Illingworth of Westminster; six grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Leroy, Earl, Stuart and Frank Simonds.
The graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Saxtons River cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home.
Sylvia S. O’Donnell
BRATTLEBORO — Sylvia S. O’Donnell, 99, died June 5, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home.
She was born Dec. 21, 1903, in Ludlow, the daughter of Elmer and Clara (Tarbell) Spafford.
She attended Springfield High School and Rockingham Hospital School of Nursing.
She married
Thomas O’Donnell on Sept. 19, 1927, in Brattleboro, He died in 1977.
Mrs. O’Donnell worked as a sales associate for Houghton & Simonds Store in Brattleboro for 19 years, and later at J.E. Mann’s. In her earlier years, she had worked at Bushnell’s IGA in Brattleboro.
She was a communicant of St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Brattleboro.
She enjoyed working in her flower garden and reading.
Survivors include a sister, Florence Angley of Bryantville, Mass.; several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Sister Katherine O’Donnell, who was a Sister of Mercy, in 1983; two brothers, Glenn Davis and Gordon Davis; and two sisters, Marion Berry and Gladys Ward.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Charles cemetery in Westminster.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro. A parish prayer service will be offered Sunday at 5 p.m. by the Rev. Seamus Finn.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael’s School, 48 Walnut St., Brattleboro, 05301, Attn: Frank Vara, Principal.

Stanley R. King Jr.
HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. — Stanley R. King Jr., 66, a former resident of Bennington, Vt., died June 5, 2003, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Albany.
He was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Bennington, the son of Stanley Sr. and Barbara (Kupfer) King.
He graduated from Bennington High School in 1954.
Mr. King owned and operated a real estate business for many years.
He was an avid Miami Dolphin fan, and enjoyed old movies.
Survivors include a daughter, Tami King of Billings, Mo.; two sons, Mark King and Eric King of Troy; a stepdaughter, Toni Balou of Fontana, Calif., and a stepson, Stephen Boynton of Bennington, Vt.; a sister, Barbara Laraway of Pittsfield, Mass.; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Simpson.
A private graveside service will be held in Park Lawn cemetery in Bennington at the convenience of the family.

Charles H. Young
RANDOLPH CENTER — The memorial service for Charles Henry Young, 86, who died Jan. 18, 2003, will be held Sunday, June 15, at 11 a.m. at the Randolph Seventh Day Adventist Church in Braintree with the Rev. Al Cyr, pastor, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Pearsons Funeral Service in Lyndonville.
Kathryne M. Frazier
MANCHESTER VILLAGE — The memorial service for Kathryne Marie Frazier, who died May 2, 2003, will be held Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village. The Rev. Steven Berry will officiate. Mrs. Frazier’s cremated remains will be buried privately on Wednesday in Mount Hebron cemetery in Montclair, N.J.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester.
Mildred L. Carnes Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The graveside service for Mildred L. Carnes, 74, who died Jan. 3, 2003, was held Friday in Maine cemetery in Maine, N.Y.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Bruce A. Lachapelle Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The memorial service for Bruce A. Lachapelle, 54, who died June 6, 2003, was held Friday at the Davis Memorial Chapel. The Rev. Peter Williams, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Robert L. Johnson Post 771 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vietnam Veterans of Vermont, Chapter 723 of Chester provided military honors. The flag was presented to the family by Elmer Kruse.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Forrest Torrey Rites
SHOREHAM — The funeral service for Forrest “Pa” Torrey, 85, who died June 3, 2003, was held Friday at the Addison Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Daryle Cook, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham.
Bearers were Darren Blair, Richard Blair, Jeff Torrey, Charles Torrey Jr., Gene Torrey and Joe Peltier.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury.
Richard G. Gale Rites
SALISBURY — The funeral service for Richard Gordon Gale, 69, who died June 4, 2003, was held Friday at the Congregational Church in Salisbury. The Rev. John Gravetti, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in Holman cemetery.
Organist was Rhoda Benjamin.
A graveside Masonic service was conducted by members of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge 25 and Independence Lodge 10 in Orwell.
American Legion Post 55 of Brandon provided military honors. The flag was presented to Mrs. Gale by Chaplain Reed. Taps was sounded.
Bearers were Frank Farnsworth, Janner Morgan, John Moulton, Ed Martel, Gary Arnold and Alden Atwood. Honorary pallbearers were Stanton English, Chester Ketcham, Harry Hunt, Harry Hunt Jr., Richard Buxton, George Bathgate, Dean Lawrence and Ronald LaRock.
The family received friends at the church hall for a time of fellowship and reflection following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
James W. Fowler
PITTSFORD — James W. Fowler, 76, died June 6, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland.
Funeral arrangements are pending for Tuesday at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Thelma G. Hanson
RUTLAND — Funeral services for Thelma G. Hanson, 82, of Rutland, who died June 5, 2003, were held Saturday at the Aldous Funeral Home. The pastor, Jane Buswell, officiated.
Bearers were Thomas Allen, Larry Melen, Jeremy Whitamore, and Gary Whitamore.
Burial followed in the Calvary cemetery.

Rose A. Haupt
RANDOLPH — Rose A. Haupt, 78, died June 7, 2003, at the Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
Arrangements are pending under the direction of the Day Funeral Home.
Evelyn M. Hier
MIDDLETOWN SPRINGS — Evelyn M. Hier, age 57, of Middletown Springs passed away on June 5, 2003, at her residence.
Mrs. Hier was born on March 25, 1946, in Rutland, daughter of the late William and Lillian (Brewster) Jones. She was a graduate of Rutland High School. Mrs. Hier served as a clerk in the United States Army in 1965. She was employed by the Castleton State College for 14 years as a dietary aide, through Aramark.
Mrs. Hier is survived by her husband, William J. Hier of Middletown Springs; one son, Jared W. Hier of Granville, N.Y; one daughter, Sarah M. Hier of Poultney; three brothers, Robert Jones of Fortuna, Calif., Bernie Jones of Bomoseen, Vt., and John Jones, of Rutland, and many other loving family members and friends.
Relatives and friends may call at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral on Monday from 10 to 11 a.m.
There will be a funeral service at the funeral home at 11 a.m. on Monday with the Rev. Stephen R. Payne, pastor of the United Baptist Church of Poultney, officiating.
