Stanley A. Hubbard
ROCHESTER - Stanley Abbot Hubbard, 92, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Brookside Nursing Home in Bradford.
He was born April 22, 1908, in Rochester, the son of Clayton and Margery (Manney) Hubbard.
Mr. Hubbard attended Rochester "Hill" schools, Craftsbury Academy and graduated from Essex Junction High School in 1925. After graduation he worked on the family farm until the 1990s.
On May 4, 1948, he married
Florence "Ro" Martin in Rochester.
Mr. Hubbard was a member of Essex Junction Methodist Church, Vermont Maple Sugarmakers Association, Vermont Farm Bureau and the ASCS (Soil Conservation Service), where he served as a county committee leader. He was on the Board of Listers in Rochester for 21 years. He also served as sexton of North Hollow cemetery until the mid-1990s.
He enjoyed woodworking, reading and, in earlier years, hunting and hiking.
Survivors include a son, Harold Hubbard, of Rochester, a daughter, Margaret Farrington, of Lyndonville; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his wife; by a brother, Harold Charles Hubbard, and by a grandson, John A. Hubbard.
There are no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. at Rochester Federated Church, with the Rev. William Daniels officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Rose O. Swain
WALPOLE, N.H. - Rose O. Swain, 105, a lifetime resident of Walpole, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000, at Countryside Manor Nursing Home in Lamar, Ariz.
She was born Oct. 11, 1895, in Lebanon, the daughter of Alex and Mary (Poland) Marcotte.
She married
Leslie Swain in 1913.
Mrs. Swain is survived by three sons, John Swain of Spring Hills, Fla., Clarence Swain of Walpole and Robert Kenney of Vernon, Vt.; four daughters, Dorothy Hicks of Charlestown, Hazel King of Clarksville, Ariz., Marion Critchfield of Hartman, Ariz., and Rose Hurd of Chipley, Fla.; 33 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren, 40 great-great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; 14 great-great-step-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband; by a son, Richard Swain, and by two daughters, Gladys LaRue and Stella Swain.
There are no calling hours.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Old Walpole cemetery in Walpole at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Charles Friedman officiating.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Walpole Fire Department, P.O. Box 235, Walpole, 03608, to benefit the Thermal Imaging Unit.

Mildred N. Grover
EAST CLARENDON — Mildred N. Grover, 81, died May 24, 2003, at her home.
She was born Dec. 22, 1921, in Rutland, the daughter of Fred J. and Gertrude (Fosburg) Pockette.
She was a World War II veteran, having served in the WAAC and WAC from July 1943 to December 1945.
She was a member of West Rutland American Legion Post 87.
Survivors include four sisters, Dorothy Beane of Connecticut, Gladys Monahan of Ira, Charlene Rollins and Ramona Guimonds, both of Rutland; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clayton Grover in 2001, and by a sister, Winifred Rollins.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in East Clarendon cemetery. A reception will be held at the Clifford Funeral Home Thursday at noon. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rutland Area Visiting Nurse Association & Hospice, P.O. Box 787, Rutland, 05702, or to the Community Cancer Center, in care of Rutland Regional Medical Center, Allen Street, Rutland, 05701.

Ethel Mae DesMarais
Ethel May (French) DesMarais of Rutland passed away at Haven Health Care on Friday, May 23, 2003, after a period of declining health.
She was born in Rutland, the daughter of William F. and Julia (McGowan) French.
She graduated from Rutland High and was married
to Gerald L. DesMarais on Sept. 30, 1946, at Christ the King Church in Rutland.
Before her marriage she was employed by Charles Stern Co. Later, after the sudden death of her husband in 1967, she held several different employment positions while raising a family of five children.
Following retirement she volunteered as a crossing guard for the Rutland public school system.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
She is survived by one son, Gerald L. DesMarais, and his wife, Jean, of Williston; three daughters, Marie Garbacz, and her husband, Frank, of Middlebury, Jean DesMarais and Therese Sweeney and her husband, Phillip, all of Rutland. Also surviving is one sister, Mrs. Charles (Helen) Marro of Rutland, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; a daughter, Jane; and two brothers, James F. French of Jericho and Atty. Donald M. French of Wallingford.
At Ethel’s request there will be no visiting hours.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Rutland. Officiating will be the Rev. Francis Privé, pastor. Burial will follow in St. Joseph’s cemetery in Rutland.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
Marie E. Bizon
CASTLETON — Marie E. Bizon, 67, of Castleton, died Saturday at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Pittsford March 13, 1936, the daughter of Ervin and Catherine (Gleason) Brown.
She attended Mount St. Joseph Academy and graduated from West Covina High School in Covina, Calif.
She married
Stanley Bizon Jr. July 28, 1958.
Mrs. Bizon was a pastry chef and a cook at Midway Diner, Larry’s Diner and at Kmart.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Church, American Legion Post 31 Auxiliary, the Moose Club and the Eagles Club.
She enjoyed fishing, bingo, playing cards and the New York Yankees.
Survivors include her husband of Castleton; six sons, Thomas Bizon of Clarendon, Richard Bizon of Lyndonville, James Bizon of West Rutland, Patrick Bizon of Castleton, Terry Bizon of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and Lee Bizon of Brandon; two daughters, Donna Bizon of Castleton and Lena Lee of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two brothers, Thomas Brown and Harry Brown of Rutland; a sister, Diane Evarts of Middletown; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Brown.
The funeral service is pending for Wednesday at St. Peter’s Church in Rutland. Burial will be at the convenience of the family at the Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Adriel S. Gates
PITTSFORD — Adriel S. Gates, 86, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
She was born April 27, 1917, in Proctor, the daughter of Joshua and Gladys (Vittum) Sheldon.
She graduated from Pittsford High School in 1935 and from Castleton Normal School. She was a school teacher in the Proctor school system for many years.
She married
Harold A. Gates on March 11, 1939. He predeceased her on June 9, 1993.
Adriel is survived by two sons, Harold and his wife, Marilyn, of Essex Junction and Mark and his wife, Rena, of Jamesville, Va.; five grandchildren, Lisa Hodgson, Jeffrey Gates, Pamela Eiffe, Eric Gates and Jason Gates; and three great-grandchildren, Emma and Andrew Hodgson and Ethan Gates.
She was predeceased by a sister, Marian, and a brother, Seward.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003, at 1 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford with a committal service to follow in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford.

Shawn J. Atwood
Shawn Jordan Atwood, 32, died suddenly May 24, 2003, at his home in Rutland.
He was born Nov. 22, 1970, in Springfield, the son of Connie (Smith) Drummond.
He was employed as a mason for Tedesco Masonry Inc. of Rutland for several years.
He is survived by his parents, Billy and Connie Drummond of West Rutland; a daughter and son, Shawna Atwood and Jordan Atwood, both of Rutland; a sister, Karen Czarnecki of Ira; three brothers, Richard Bidgood Jr. of Greenwich, N.Y., Darren Bidgood of Wallingford and Robby Bidgood of Rutland; a stepsister, Jennifer Gagne of Massachusetts; two stepbrothers, Christopher Drummond of Castleton and Jason Drummond of Rutland; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Stacy Atwood.
There will be no visiting hours or funeral service.
Edward J. Doran Sr.
WEST CASTLETON — Mr. Edward J. Doran Sr., 81, died Saturday, May 24, 2003, at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland after a long illness.
Mr. Doran was born on Jan. 20, 1922, in West Castleton, Vt., the son of the late John and Marguerite (White) Doran. He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse in West Castleton and graduated from Fair Haven High School with the Class of 1940.
Ed served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II as a tail gunner aboard a B-26 airplane and was shot down over Anzio, Italy. He was captured and became an American prisoner of war for 14 months in the Stalag Luft IV and VI prison camps. After being released from the service, he returned back to Vermont to rejoin his family.
He developed an interest in carpentry and in the early 1950s established the Edward J. Doran Builders Company, which included building and remodeling homes. Later with his wife, Nancy, the couple established the West Shore Realty Co. in the late 1960s. Ed continued to work as a builder until the late 1980s, retiring due to his failing health.
Ed’s connection to the West Castleton area dates back for many years. In or around 1941 his mother donated land to the Catholic Diocese of Burlington, Vt. Ed, along with other people in the area, built St. Matthew’s of Avalon Catholic Chapel in West Castleton, which is still being used during the summer months for Mass on Sunday mornings.
Mr. Doran was a communicant of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven and the American Legion Post 49 of Fair Haven and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Fair Haven. He served the community of Castleton in the capacity of Justice of the peace and also served on the Board of Selectmen in the 1950s and again in the 1960s. Ed enjoyed gardening, sugaring season, and horse racing and also enjoyed learning about the local history, especially concerning West Castleton.
He is survived by his 12 children, Jim Doran and his wife, Suzanne, of Castleton, Coreen Herrick and her husband, Jim, of Concord, N.H., Susan Doran and her husband, Edward McNamara, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Edward J. Doran Jr. and his wife, Kim, of Castleton, Bill Doran of Castleton, Joseph M. Doran and his wife, Linda, of Hydeville, Thomas L. Doran and his wife, Karen, of Castleton, Lori T. Hesch and her husband, Kurt, of Groton, Conn., Mary E. Doran and her fiancé, Jim Dreyer, of Peterborough, N.H., Timothy Doran and his wife, Bonnie, of West Castleton, Joan E. Csizmesia and her husband, Kerry, of Arlington, Vt., and Michael P. Doran Sr. and his wife, Tammy, of Benson, Vt.; his sister, Catherine Pellegrino of Castleton; and his three brothers, John Doran of Burlington, Vt., Ray Doran of Hydeville, Vt., and Ambrose Doran of Fair Haven. He is also survived by his 25 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; his former wife, Mrs. Nancy Doran of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and also by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Irene Doran, and by a sister, Ellen St. George, and by two brothers, Paul Doran and James Doran.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Wednesday, May 28, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven. The Rev. Richard W. Tinney, parish priest, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery in Fair Haven.
Following the committal service, the family will receive friends and relatives at the Crippen Fellows Post 50, American Legion, in Castleton for fellowship and refreshments. Visiting hours for family and friends will be on Tuesday, May 27, 2003, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Durfee Funeral Home, 119 No. Main St., Fair Haven.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contribution in memory of Mr. Doran may be given to the Castleton First Response through the funeral home office at P.O. Box 86, Fair Haven, Vt. 05743.
Wilfred Perry
NORTH CLARENDON — A graveside service for Wilfred J. Perry, 93, of North Clarendon, who died Jan. 22, 2003, will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in St. Mary’s cemetery in Claremont, N.H. The Rev. Stanley Piwowar, pastor of St. Joseph Church in Claremont, will officiate.

FAIR HAVEN — Mildred Frances Sweet, 88, died May 25, 2003, at Haven Health Care in Rutland.
