Carroll J. Underwood

NORTH SPRINGFIELD — Carroll J. Underwood of North Springfield died May 31, 2003, in Claremont, N.H.

He was born Nov. 6, 1933, in Rutland, the son of Franklin and Helen (Kelley) Underwood. He graduated from Wallingford High School in 1951.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Mr. Underwood worked at Jones & Lamson in Springfield for 25 years and retired from Vermont Machine Tool in 1999.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Nancy (Armstrong) Underwood of North Springfield; a daughter, Janine Hodge of Brownsville; a son, Keith Underwood of Glastonbury, Conn.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A reception will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Winston H. Derby Beverly R. Derby

LONDONDERRY — There will be a graveside service for Winston H. Derby and Beverly R. Wood Derby on Sunday, June 8, 2003, at 2 p.m. in Riverside cemetery in Londonderry.

A reception at Flood Brook School in the cafeteria will follow the service.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to a favorite charity.

Mary C. Eastman

HEBRON, N.Y. — Mary C. Eastman, 79, died May 31, 2003.

She was born Dec. 22, 1923, in Pawlet, Vt., the daughter of Loren and Julia (Cone) Baker.

She worked at Mack Molding in Arlington for several years.

Survivors include two sons, James Eastman of Dresden, Victor Eastman Jr. of Lisbon; two daughters, Sandra Horton of Salem and Faith Bloomfield of Argyle; three brothers, Kenneth Baker of North Springfield, Vt., Daryl Baker of Claremont, N.H., and Elmer Baker of Buffalo, ; two sisters, Harriet Shaw of Reston, Va., and Jean Duncan of Shreveport, La.; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Victor C. Eastman Sr.; a daughter, Laura (Julia) Eastman; four brothers, Medrick, Charles, Robert and Pat Baker; and a sister, Pearl Kelley.

A graveside funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Mettowee Valley cemetery in Pawlet, Vt., with the Rev. Paul Mychack officiating. A reception will follow in the Pawlet Community Church hall.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Salem Rescue Squad, East Broadway, Salem, N.Y., 12865.

The Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville is in charge of arrangements.

Helene Montesano

RENSSELAER, N.Y. — Helene Delphine Montesano, 88, died May 31, 2003, at the Rosewood Gardens in Rensselaer.

She was born Nov. 29, 1914, in Middle Granville, Vt., the daughter of Henry and Catherine (Nealon) Pauquette.

Survivors include four brothers, Henry Pauquette of Dalton, Mass., Leo Pauquette of Granville, Vt., Joseph Pauquette of Glenmont and Wilfred Pauquette of Voorheesville; three sisters, Katherine Buker of Albany, Pauline Grottoli of Middle Granville, Vt., and Margaret Fennell of Granville, Vt.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Montesano; a brother, Theodore Pauquette; and three sisters, Madeline Lawler, Jean Caizza and Veronica Aldous.

Friends may call at the Robert M. King Funeral Home in Granville Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Francis R. Betit

HAMPTON, N.Y. — Francis R. Betit, 63, of Hampton died June 1, 2003, at his home.

Arrangements are pending at the Roberts-Aubin Funeral Home in Poultney, Vt.

Bessie E. Griffin

Bessie Eudora Griffin, 77, of Rutland and former resident of Revena, N.Y., died June 1, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 20, 1925, in Crown Point, N.Y., the daughter of John and Alice (Thatcher) Taylor.

She worked for Foley Services and the Salvation Army Thrift Store in Rutland.

Mrs. Griffin enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include her companion, Donald Pelkey of Rutland; two daughters, Jean Gates of Mount Holly and Deborah Terrien of North Clarendon; two sons, Arthur Griffin Jr. of Honolulu, Hawaii and John Griffin of Rutland; two sisters, Anna Mayville of Witherbee, N.Y., and Bernice Wolcott of Willisboro, N.Y.; three brothers, Edwin Taylor of Seffner, Fla., Sherman Thatcher and John Taylor, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Griffin Sr.

The funeral service will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Aldous Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Hackett, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Rutland, officiating. Burial will follow in East Clarendon cemetery.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Vermont Kidney Association, Memorial Program, P.O. Box 244, Burlington, 05402-0244, or the Community Cancer Center, RRMC, 160 Allen St., Rutland, 05701.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Aldous Funeral Home.

Verona M. Snow

Verona Medor Snow, 79, of Rutland, died June 2, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

She was the widow of Paul Snow.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Kenneth M. Ransom

Kenneth M. “Mike” Ransom, 80, of Rutland Town, died June 2, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Tossing Funeral Home.

Stanley B. Kulig Rites

WEST RUTLAND — The funeral Mass for Stanley B. Kulig, 76, who died May 29, 2003, was celebrated Monday at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in West Rutland.

The Rev. Frank Warzocha, pastor, officiated. Burial followed in St. Stanislaus cemetery.

Organist was Dorothy Blicharz.

Bearers were Robert Kulig, William Kulig, Frank Kulig Jr., Peter Kulig, Steven Salengo and Frank Salengo Jr.

A prayer service was held Sunday at the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home by the Rev. Warzocha.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Mullin-Clifford Funeral Home.

Russell E. Lyons Rites

CASTLETON — The graveside service for Russell E. Lyons, 66, who died Jan. 5, 2003, was held Monday in Evergreen cemetery in Center Rutland.

The Rev. Robert Bouffard, pastor of the Fellowship Bible Church, officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Ducharme Funeral Home in Castleton.

Marie E. Bizon Rites

CASTLETON — The graveside service for Marie E. (Brown) Bizon, 67, who died May 24, 2003, was held Monday in Vermont Veterans cemetery in Randolph.

The Rev. John Milanese, pastor of Sts. Donation and Rogation Church in Randolph, officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.

Ellen M. Bruce Rites

FAIR HAVEN — The funeral Mass for Ellen Mae Bruce, 76, who died May 27, 2003, was celebrated Friday at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church in Fair Haven.

The Rev. Richard Tinney, parish priest, officiated. Burial followed in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Organist was Nancy Wetherby.

Bearers were Charles Martin, Robert Mestyan, Patrick Frazier, Nick Baron, Mike Downey and Mike Quatacker.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.

Clarence Dayton

PERU — Clarence “Ted” Dayton, 84, died June 1, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Fair Haven, the son of William and Emma (Woodard) Dayton.

He received his education in Fair Haven.

He married Rose Barone on Dec. 29, 1945, in Rutland. She predeceased him.

Mr. Dayton was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II in Guadalcanal, New Guinea, the Northern Solomon Islands and Luzon.

He worked in construction on the Townshend Dam Project, the Ball Mountain Dam Project and at Bromley Mountain.

He was a member of the Fair Haven American Legion.

Mr. Dayton enjoyed gardening, traveling, photography, playing cards, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include two sons, William Dayton of Londonderry and Ron Dayton of Wilmington, N.C.; five daughters, Patricia Roberts and Joan Dayton, both of Londonderry, Sandy Parker of Weston, Donna Williams of Peru and Kathy Dayton of Cold Spring, N.Y.; a brother, William Dayton Jr. of Whitehall, N.Y.; two sisters, Eleanor Bushey of Castleton and Betty Stevens of Rutland; 17 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Albert Dayton and Clifford Dayton.

The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Brewster Funeral Service in Manchester Center with Kermit Reilly officiating. Burial followed in Riverview cemetery in Londonderry.

There will be no calling hours.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Londonderry Rescue Squad, in care of the Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester Center, 05255.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Service.
