GLENN R. NORTON

ESSEX JUNCTION -- Glenn Robert Norton, 82, of Essex Junction, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the Vermont Respite House in Williston after a brief illness.

Glenn was born on Jan. 3, 1920, on West Street in Essex Junction, the son of the late Herbert H. and Harriet (Whitney) Norton.

He graduated from Burlington High School in 1940. He served as a corporal with bravery and distinction in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

On June 30, 1947, he married Theresa Amy Manseau of Winooski. They lived in Burlington for several years before settling in Essex Junction.

Glenn worked for many years as the body shop foreman at Lake View Buick in South Burlington and later retired from Crawford Insurance Company as an automobile damage appraiser.

Glenn embodied the sentiments in Tom Brokaw's book, "The Greatest Generation." He came home from the war, carried on with his life, married, raised his family and expected absolutely nothing in return for his service to his country.

Glenn was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved repairing automobiles, a good game of horseshoes, and big band music. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at the Norton family camp in Georgia including Ray and Shirley, Rene and Theresa, Jo, Bernie and Marjorie, Janice and Paul, George and Lin and Paul and Dee.

His greatest love, though, was being "Grampy" to his grandchildren. He loved sitting on the beach watching his grandchildren and granddogs swimming during the day, and enjoyed sunsets and bonfires with them on the beach at night. He looked forward each year to spring so he could plant his garden of flowers and watch them blossom throughout the summer and fall.

He is survived by his wife Theresa of Essex Junction; and four daughters, Louise Dittoe and her husband Bud of Corpus Christi, Texas, Betty Allen and her husband Dick of Scotia, N.Y., Kathy Vaillancourt of Rutland, and Sue Williams and her husband Dan of Fletcher. He also leaves six grandchildren, Michael Jarrett of Corpus Christi, Texas, Karen and David Allen of Scotia, N.Y., Abby and Kyle Williams of Fletcher, and Laura Vaillancourt of Rutland; and three great-grandsons.

He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Roseanne Norton of Daytona, Fla., Donna Runnells of Newport, and Dorothy Manseau of Westminster, Md.; as well as one brother-in-law, John Van Sleet of Hinesburg; and several nieces and nephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves his special friends, Bob and Francine Allen of Georgia. He was predeceased by a son-in-law, Robert Vaillancourt in 1999; and four brothers, Clyde, Carl, Guy and Charles Norton; and two sisters, Ruth Romprey and Doris Van Sleet.

The family would like to thank Dr. Malcolm Paulsen, Dr. Joseph Haddock, the nurses of Baird 4 at the Fletcher Allen Hospital, and the staff and volunteers of the Vermont Respite House for the wonderful care that Glenn received during his illness.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lavigne Funeral Home on Main St. in Winooski. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. in St. Lawrence Catholic Church on West St. in Essex Junction. Interment will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery in South Burlington.

Glenn was anticipating the completion of the Veterans Memorial Park in Essex Jct. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, Glenn's family requests that donations be made to the Veterans Memorial Park at Five Corners, c/o Ann Gray, Veterans Memorial Park Fundraising Committee, P.O. Box 8315, Essex Jct., Vt. 05452.
