Alfred Cook
EAST DORSET — Alfred Cook, 85, of East Dorset and a seasonal resident of Nokomis, Fla., died April 8, 2003, at Manor Care Health Services in Venice, Fla.
He was born May 16, 1917, in New Bedford, Mass., the son of George and Emily (Harnish) Cook.
He worked for Mack Molding Co. in Arlington for 37 years, retiring in 1982.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Betty (Howe) Cook; three sons, Alfred Cook Jr. of Cummins, Ga., Sidney Cook of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Donald Cook of Essex Junction; two daughters, Marilyn Artsma of Arcadia, Fla., and Anita Oglesby of Dickinson, Texas; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Karen Bovey.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, May 10, at 1 p.m. at the Congregational Church in East Dorset with the Rev. Jordan Dickinson of the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village officiating. Burial will follow in South Village cemetery in East Dorset.

Joseph Francis Cioffi
NORTH SPRINGFIELD — Joseph Francis Cioffi, 78, of cemetery Road, died Friday morning, April 18, 2003, at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.
He was born March 3, 1925, in Rutland, Vt., the son of Frank and Josephine (Cioffi) Cioffi. He graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy in Rutland in 1942. He was later drafted into the Army, and was an infantryman at the Battle of the Bulge in World War II. He later served as an M.P. in Norfolk, Virginia. After his military service, he worked three years as a plumber’s apprentice with his uncle Pat Cioffi in Rutland.
On May 7, 1955, he married
Norma L. Chapman in Springfield.
He was a member of the first Vermont State Police Academy class in the fall of 1949. He spent 30 years in the Vermont State Police, retiring at the age of 55 with the rank of Captain. He served as Vermont Governor Joe Johnson’s chauffeur, served on the Bureau of Criminal Investigation as a plain clothes detective, and served in the State Fire Marshall’s office, retiring in 1979. After his retirement from the state police, he worked at the Vermont Research Corporation in North Springfield for 10 years, and later at the Miltope Corporation in Springfield for several years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Church and the Springfield Booster Club.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of North Springfield; three sons, Mark Cioffi and his wife Mary Ann of Pembroke, N.H., Paul Cioffi of Windsor Locks, Conn., Glenn Cioffi and his wife Michele of Essex Junction; one daughter, Joan Cioffi of Lubbock, Texas; one son-in-law, Michael Lantiegne of Weare, N.H.; a sister, Carmella Musella and a brother, Alfonzo Cioffi, both of Rutland; seven grandchildren, Tia, Trace, Alyssa, Kate, Kyle, Jean and Lindsey; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter, Jean Lantiegne in 1983 and by a sister, Frances Pratt.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church with the Rev. Raymond Fournier of St. Joseph’s Church in Chester officiating. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m.

William A. Smith Sr. Rites
WEATHERSFIELD — The funeral service for William A. Smith Sr., 89, who died April 14, 2003, was held Friday at the United Methodist Church in Springfield with the Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Oakland cemetery in Springfield.
Bearers were Christian Dockum, Andrew Dockum, William Smith Jr., Chris Eiseman, Rick Eastman and David Miller.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Donald H. Mears Rites
BENNINGTON — The funeral service for Donald H. Mears, who died April 13, 2003, was held Thursday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Arthur Kingdon, rector, officiating. The Rev. Penny Hawkins, deacon, assisted. Burial followed in Hinsdillville cemetery.
Organist was Don McMahon.
American Legion Post 13 of Bennington provided military honors. The flag was presented to Mr. Mears’ wife, Anna. Taps were sounded by Maurice Rancourt.
Bearers were Jeremy Mears, James Mears Jr., Harold Stanley Jr., Daniel Cutler, David Lincoln and George Babcock.
Members of American Legion Post 13 of Bennington conducted their service Wednesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Jean W. Lillie Rites
EAST POWNAL — The funeral service for Jean W. Lillie, who died April 10, 2003, was held Saturday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Gaylord Campbell, pastor of the Pownal United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial followed in Oak Hill cemetery in Pownal.
During the funeral service an honor guard was formed by the Pownal Valley Fire Department, east station.
Bearers were Jason Lillie, Randy Gates, Robert Brown III, Jamie Jelley Jr., Jared Lillie and Keith Lillie.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Dorothy Dutton
LEICESTER — Dorothy Margaret Dutton, 73, died April 18, 2003, at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Kenneth Farnsworth
CHESTER — Kenneth Leon Farnsworth, 81, died April 17, 2003, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.
He was born Sept. 22, 1921 in Springfield, the son of Earl B. and Wilma (Willard) Farnsworth.
He attended Springfield schools and graduated from Springfield High School in 1941.
He served in the United States Army in the European theater in World War II, attaining the rank of technical sergeant. He received the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, World War II Victory Medal and Ex-POW Medal.
He married
Barbara Pollard on May 2, 1947, in Ludlow.
He retired from Fellows Gear Shaper in 1984 after 43 years of service.
Mr. Farnsworth was a member of the Robert L. Johnson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 771 and a lifetime member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War National Organization and the Vermont Chapter 1.
He greatly enjoyed being outdoors, including hunting, fly fishing and ice fishing. He was also an ardent fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and the New England Patriots. He always looked forward to being with his friends at the monthly Fellows Gear Shaper Retirees breakfast.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Richard Farnsworth of Chester; three daughters, Kathryn Tucker of Rockingham, Susan Reynells of West Peterborough, N.H., and Marilyn Armstrong of Hobe Sound, Fla.; five granddaughters; five great-grandsons; three great-granddaughters; a sister, Shirley Petraska of Chester; an aunt; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours.
A graveside service will be held later at the convenience of the family.

Laurance Noe
RUTLAND — Laurance Frances Noe, 87, of Rutland, died April 18, 2003, at Haven Health Care Center in Rutland.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peters Church in Rutland. Burial will follow in St. Dominic’s cemetery in Proctor.

John Peters
RUTLAND — Funeral services for John A. Peters, 75, who died April 16 in Rutland, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Peter’s Church.
Friends may call from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at the Clifford Funeral Home.
Drew Tallman
THETFORD CENTER — Drew Tallman, 60, of Thetford Center, died April 17, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born on April 3, 1943, in Oradell, N.J., the son of Bergen and Beatrice (Cresse) Tallman.
For the past 25 years, Mr. Tallman was the owner of Paint N Paper Barn’s Home Decorating Store in West Lebanon, N.H. Prior to that he was a football coach at Dartmouth College for six years. He also published technical books on coaching football.
Mr. Tallman was a resident of Thetford Center since 1971. He enjoyed serving as a town selectman, and a trustee at Thetford Academy, Timothy Frost Methodist Church and the Thetford Center Community Association.
Mr. Tallman married
Susan Jane Rohde in Wilton, Conn., on Dec. 27, 1965.
His interests included hiking; designing and building their home; and working in the fields on his blue antique tractor.
Survivors include his wife, Sue; daughters Julie and Holly; and his brother Gregg.
There will be no calling hours.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Timothy Frost Methodist Church in Thetford Center with the Rev. Bertha Brown officiating. Burial will be at a later date.
Following the service, there will be a reception at the Community Center across the street from the church.
Memorial donations may be made to the Norris Cotton Cancer Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
The Hale Funeral Home in Thetford Center is in charge of the arrangements.
William M. Cressy
DANBY — William M. Cressy, 74, of Danby died April 18, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Sept. 5, 1928, in Royalston, Mass., the son of Charles B. and Muriel (Redington) Cressy. He graduated from Hopkinton High School in 1947.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War on the USS Gilmore. Following his honorable discharge, he relocated to Danby, where he owned and operated a dairy farm until his retirement due to ill health.
He married
Rosalie Noyes on July 30, 1955.
Mr. Cressy was a member of Marble Lodge 76 F & AM in Danby.
He enjoyed hunting.
Survivors include his wife of Danby; a daughter, Kathy Miner of Vergennes; a son, Kevin Cressy of Danby; a sister, Marion Barnard of Bellows Falls; three brothers, Clifton Cressy of West Rutland, Robert Cressy of Danby and Frederick Cressy of Keene, N.H.; a granddaughter; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Esther LaMoria.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Wallingford Aldous Funeral Home. The Rev. Lawrence Switzer will officiate. Burial of ashes will follow in the Danby-Scottsville cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
