Robert M. Campbell
BARNARD — Robert Mervin Campbell, 60, died April 9, 2003, in Ormond Beach, Fla.
He was born May 25, 1942, in Randolph, the son of Francis and Emma Campbell.
He attended St. Johnsbury Academy.
He married
Evola Withington on May 21, 1966.
Mr. Campbell worked for Ducky Rotta and Rodgers Construction, and was self-employed in Campbell’s Welding and Repair for more than 30 years.
He was a member of the Moose Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, maple sugaring and his garden in Florida.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Marcy Wardwell and Pattie Webster, both of Barnard; two sons, Charles Campbell and Peter Campbell, both of Barnard; four sisters, Nancy English of Kansas, June Trembley of Florida, Mary Amsden of Bethel and Kathleen Maynard of Bakersfield; 10 grandchildren; an uncle; two aunts; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a son, Craig Campbell, in 1993.
The graveside service will be held May 25 at 11:30 a.m. in the Methodist cemetery in Barnard, followed by a potluck gathering at the Barnard Town Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Bees, in care of Ken Darling, P.O. Box 810, Woodstock, 05091, for soccer uniforms and equipment for the Barnard School.
Mildred E. Connolly
WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Mildred E. Connolly, 84, died April 14, 2003, at Brookside Nursing Home in White River Junction.
She was born Aug. 17, 1918, in Lester, Mass., the daughter of Albert and Laura (Mayo) Ellis.
She worked at the Veterans Administration in White River Junction as a forewoman in the building management department for more than 25 years, retiring in 1982.
Survivors include three stepsons, Mike Connolly of Springfield, Denny and Tom Connolly, both of Windsor; a stepdaughter, Roxanne LaBelle of White River Junction; two brothers, Donnie Ellis of Georgia and Albert Ellis of Burlington; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Connolly, in 1999; and a sister, Minnie Baisley.
The graveside service will take place at a later date in Hartford cemetery in White River Junction.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.
William A. Smith Sr.
WEATHERSFIELD — William A. Smith Sr., 89, of Skyline Drive, died Monday afternoon, April 14, 2003, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born August 31, 1913, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of George and Edna (Reiley) Smith. He attended schools in Freeport, New York, and later attended Washington and Lee University in Virginia. For several years, he was employed by the Long Island Lighting Company and the W.T. Grant Company, both in New York.
On August 15, 1942, he married
Marion R. Hanson in Floral Park, New York. They made their home in Sea Cliff and Stony Brook, Long Island for several years, where together they owned and operated Country Clothes and Oxford Limited, two retail clothing businesses on Long Island. They have resided in Vermont since 1968, where they owned and operated Smith-Relyea Chrysler Plymouth in Springfield, and later the William A. Smith Real Estate Agency as well as “Pastimes Antiques” for many years. They were both members of the United Methodist Church, and former members of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra S. Dockum of Springfield, Susan S. Eiseman and her husband Christopher of Sharon, Mass.; and Sherry W. Smith of Chester; a son, William A. Smith Jr. of Chester; seven grandchildren, Christian T. Dockum of Vail, Colo., Melissa B. Dockum of Nashville, Tenn., Andrew W. Dockum of Providence, R.I., Elizabeth Eiseman and Michael C. Eiseman, both of Sharon, Mass., Steven Miller and Holly Miller, both of Bellows Falls; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Wallace of North Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion R. Smith, on March 7, 2001; and by two sisters, Elizabeth Goodwin and Mildred Smith.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church with the Rev. William Scherwerts, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland cemetery.
Friends may call at the Davis Memorial Chapel on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Katheryn S. Jacobs
SPRINGFIELD — Katheryn S. Jacobs, 53, died April 15, 2003, at her home.

Roger Grant Goodeve
WINDHAM — Roger Grant Goodeve, 81, of Windham, Vt., died April 14, 2003, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center after a brief illness. Formerly of Middlebury, Conn., he was born in New York City and raised in Scarsdale, N.Y. He was the son of Lindsay MacKenzie Goodeve and Lillian Sutherland Grant. He was the great-grandnephew of General Ulysses S. Grant.
He graduated from Deerfield Academy and Yale University, class of 1944, where he was a varsity swimmer, a member of the St. Elmo Society and elected to Tau Beta Pi, the national honor society. After college he fought in World War II, in both the European and Pacific theaters as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.
In 1947 he married
Lucy Nichols Dean of Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. For 28 years they lived in Middlebury, where he worked first at the U.S. Rubber Company and then at the Risdon Manufacturing Company, where he eventually became Vice President. In 1975 he moved with his family to Windham, Vt., and established a tax and business counseling practice. He continued in this profession until last year, retiring at 80. Always active in his community, Roger served as Chairman of the local Finance Committees in both Connecticut and Vermont. He served on the Republican State Committee in Connecticut and was Town Moderator in Windham for over 20 years, stepping down at this year’s Town Meeting.
The great joys of his life were his family, skiing, music, skiing, dancing, skiing, opera, skiing, the theater, skiing, his pets, and the Boston Bruins. He is survived by his wife, Lucy of Windham; his sister, Ann Close of Wilton, Conn.; his two sons, Barton Goodeve of Sharon, N.H., Grant Goodeve of Redmond, Wash.; his daughter, Thryza Goodeve of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
A service in celebration of Roger’s life will be held at the Londonderry Congregational Church, Saturday, April 19, at 3 p.m.

Mary L. Vadakin
SHAFTSBURY — Mary L. Vadakin, 90, died April 14, 2003, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born July 4, 1912, in Bennington, the daughter of Arthur and Mary (Lorette) DeBell.
She received her education in Hinsdale, N.H.
She first married
Ford Hurley, who died in 1969, and later married
Clayton Vadakin on Sept. 12, 1981.
Mrs. Vadakin was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bennington.
Survivors include her husband of Shaftsbury; a daughter, Mary Senecal of Bennington; 18 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Josephine Candib; a son, John Hurley; a sister, Cora Sanders; two brothers, Arthur DeBell and Felix DeBell; and a granddaughter.
There will be no funeral service or calling hours.
The graveside service will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in Park Lawn cemetery with the Rev. Penny Hawkins of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church officiating.

Theresa A. Mayer
BENNINGTON — Theresa A. Mayer, 64, a resident of Barefoot Bay, Fla., and former resident of Bennington, died April 15, 2003, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
She was born Feb. 8, 1939, in Bennington, the daughter of George and Audrey (Senecal) McKenna.
She received her education at St. Francis de Sales Academy and Bennington High School.
She married
Joseph Mayer Sr. on June 18, 1955, in Bennington.
Mrs. Mayer worked at Stanley Tool, the Grand Union, Jard Co., and Super Duper Market, all in Bennington, and more recently at NorPlex Oak in Hoosick Falls, N.Y. She also worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fla.
She enjoyed the Internet.
Survivors include her husband of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; two sons, Joseph Mayer Jr. of Buskirk, N.Y., and Dale Mayer of Pownal; a sister, Tina Marmillo of Bennington; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Timothy Mayer; and a brother, Phillip McKenna.
The graveside committal service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in White Chapel cemetery.
Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
A reception for friends and family will be held at the North Bennington Firehouse following the committal service.

BENNINGTON — Patrick W. O’Brien, 85, died April 15, 2003, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.

Claudette M. Quenneville
WHITING — Claudette Marie Quenneville, age 68, died Monday, April 14, 2003, her wedding anniversary, at her home in Whiting following a long hard battle with cancer.
Mrs. Quenneville was born in Middlebury on Jan. 26, 1935. She was the daughter of Lucien and Estelle (Gibeault) Charron. She received her early education in local Middlebury schools. April 14, 1952, she married
Roger Quenneville at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Middlebury. Mr. Quenneville died Dec. 21, 1976. In their earlier years they made their home in Shoreham. She has been a resident of Whiting since 1959. She loved the company of her very large family, and enjoyed baking and reading as well as loving and supporting her grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters, Tina Bilodeau and her husband Danny, Tracy Simonds and husband Mark; four sons, Steven and his wife Marie, Jerry and his wife Janet, David and his wife Gale, Tony and his wife Carol; four sisters, Jeannette Wood of Raeford, N.C., Connie Cone of Shoreham, Ginny Bigelow of Wallingford and Louise Bertrand of Orwell. A brother, Dennis Charron of East Middlebury; 14 Grandchildren, four Great-Grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive her. She was predeceased by a brother, Richard Charron; and a Granddaughter, Ashley Quenneville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 17, 2003, at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Brandon. The Rev. Albert Baltz, pastor, will be the celebrant. A private graveside committal service and burial will follow in St. Mary’s cemetery.
Following the Mass at church, friends are invited to meet with the family at the Whiting Town Hall for a time of fellowship and reflection.

GOSHEN — The funeral service for Anna Wagner Atwell, 88, who died April 10, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor of the Brandon Congregational Church, officiating. A private graveside service and burial will take place at a later date in Pine Hill cemetery in Brandon.

John A. Peters, 75, of Rutland died April 16, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.

The funeral service for Frederick G. Chapin, 84, of Rutland, who died April 9, 2003, was held Tuesday at the Barnard Funeral Home in Pittsford with the Rev. James Lawrence, pastor of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen cemetery in Pittsford.
American Legion Post 31 provided military honors. James Burke made the flag presentation.

Richard Tinney, parish priest of Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Shelburne Village cemetery.
