John H. Ohly
REHOBOTH, Mass. — John H. Ohly, 61, a resident of Rehoboth and Killington, Vt., died Oct. 11, 2002, at home.
He was born Feb. 12, 1941, in Washington, D.C., the son of John Hallowell and Elizabeth (Congleton) Ohly.
He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Williams College. He later received his doctoral degree from Boston University.
Mr. Ohly taught at Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage, Alaska, for five years, and Southeastern Massachusetts University in Dartmouth.
Survivors include two brothers, Nicholas Ohly of New Haven, Conn., and Frederick Ohly of McLean, Va.; his former wife, Jane (Ingle) Haynes; two nieces and three nephews; and his companion, Lee-Ing Tong.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 14, at 11:30 a.m. at the Congregational Church in Rehoboth. Burial will be private.

Helen A. Franzoni Rites
The funeral Mass for Helen Anita Franzoni, 92, of Rutland, who died Oct. 27, 2002, was celebrated Wednesday at Christ the King Church with the Rev. Reid C. Mayo, pastor, officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Hope E. Hubbard Rites
The memorial service for Hope E. Hubbard, 98, of Rutland, who died Oct. 26, 2002, was held Wednesday at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ Chapel with the Rev. Robert B. Curry, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View cemetery in Middletown Springs.
Organist was Rip Jackson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Congregational Church, UCC, 8 Court St., Rutland, 05701.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Tossing Funeral Home.
Norman C. Bailey Sr. Rites
BRANDON — The funeral service for Norman Chauncey Bailey Sr., 79, who died Oct. 27, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Brandon with the Rev. Richard White, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in Pine Hill cemetery.
Organist was Bonnie Miller Johnson.
American Legion Post 55 of Brandon provided military honors. Chaplain Norman Reed presented the flag to Mr. Bailey’s wife.
Pallbearers were Gene Foss, Dave Rowden, Harry Hunt, Mark Gove, James Disorda and Frank Mazza.
The family received friends at the Brandon American Legion hall following the committal service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.
Helen S. Byrne Rites
CASTLETON — The funeral service for Helen Sheldon Byrne, 82, who died Oct. 27, 2002, was held Wednesday at the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven with the Rev. Stephen R. Payne, pastor of the United Baptist Church in Poultney, officiating. Burial followed in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.
Bearers were grandniece Beth Williams, grandnephews Norman Williams, Ron Adams, Aaron Perry, Adam Perry and Chris Sheldon.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Clifton F. Cornell
EAST RANDOLPH — Clifton F. Cornell, 73, died Oct. 30, 2002, at his home.
He was born Sept. 1, 1929, in East Bethel, the son of Fred and Nellie (Davis) Cornell.
He was educated in East Bethel schools and South Royalton High School.
He married
Betty Thomas on June 27, 1953, in Bethel.
Mr. Cornell worked at the Hyde Saw Mill in East Bethel, painted with Sherman Salter for many years and was a self-employed painter. He retired from the parts department at L.W. Greenwood in East Randolph in 1997. He had operated the Mayer’s Nest Antique Shop in East Randolph.
He was a member of the Brookfield Masonic Lodge, American Legion Post 9 in Randolph and a past member of the Montpelier Elks. He had been a volunteer fireman in East Randolph, a selectman and supervisor of the Neighborhood Housing in East Randolph.
He enjoyed fishing, collecting, repairing clocks, gardening, cooking, reading and bowling.
Survivors include his wife of East Randolph; a son, Bruce Cornell of Washington; three daughters, Laura Cornell of Williamstown, Brenda Archer of Wilton, Maine, and Valarie Webster of Southern Pines, N.C.; two sisters, Freda Salls of Randolph and Arlene Benware; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Stanley Cornell, Cleve Cornell and Alton Cornell; and a sister, Celia Davis.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Day Funeral Home with the Rev. Albert Collins of Websterville officiating. Burial will take place in Vermont Veterans Memorial cemetery in Randolph Center at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Dorothy Kennedy
MANCHESTER — Dorothy Kennedy, 88, formerly of Mount Kisco, N.Y., died Oct. 28, 2002, at Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington.
She was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Delhi, N.Y.
She graduated from Ithaca College.
Mrs. Kennedy worked as a schoolteacher in the Bedford Central School System for 30 years, retiring to Manchester.
She was a member of the Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester.
Survivors include several nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Kennedy.
The memorial service will be held Saturday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester. Cremation will take place at Vermont Cremation Service in Bennington, and her cremains will be buried in St. Mark’s cemetery in Mount Kisco, N.Y.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Clayton Scholarship Fund at the Zion Church, in care of Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, 05255.

Thomas E. Leonard
SPRINGFIELD — Thomas E. Leonard, 63, died suddenly Oct. 30, 2002, upon arrival at Springfield Hospital.
He was born Aug. 12, 1939, in Detroit, Mich., the son of Walter and Juanita (Thompson) Ordinetz.
He attended schools in Detroit.
He married
Lynne Petraglia on Sept. 8, 1974, in Chester.
Mr. Leonard worked as a machinist at Jones and Lamson for several years, and later at the Goodyear Plant in Windsor as a mechanic. He also owned and operated the Curve-Inn Lounge for several years, and for the past 15 years has operated his own excavating and contracting business in Springfield.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the paratrooper division in Germany in the 11th Airborne Division and later in Panama in the 82nd Airborne Division.
Survivors include his wife of Springfield; his mother of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four sons, Tom Campbell of Long Island, N.Y., Rick Campbell and Jason Leonard, both of Weathersfield, and Mike Parks of Charlestown, N.H.; three grandchildren; a brother, Allen Leonard of Claremont, N.H.; a sister, Nancy Garrow of Springfield; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Davis Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Gunnar Urang of Norwich officiating. Burial will follow in Oakland cemetery.
Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davis Chapel.

Barbara L. Nash
CLAREMONT, N.H. — Barbara L. Nash, 81, formerly of North Charlestown, died Oct. 28, 2002, at Integrated Health Services of New Hampshire at Claremont.
She was born Jan. 7, 1921, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the daughter of Newell and Dorothy (Swart) Lee.
She graduated from Rutland (Vt.) High School in 1938.
She married
Robert Nash on Sept. 18, 1939, in Rutland, Vt. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Nash worked as a bookkeeper at Richardson’s Sharpening Service, retiring in 1983.
She was a member of Mizpah-Eunice Chapter 30 Order of Eastern Star, Charlestown Garden Club, Union Episcopal Church and the Education for Ministry Group.
Survivors include a daughter, Penelope Mann of Claremont; two granddaughters, one great-grandson and one great-granddaughter; a sister, Mary Johnson of Rutland, Vt.; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Philip Nash in 1961; and a brother, Charles Lee.
The funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at Union Episcopal Church in West Claremont with the Rev. Cassius L. Webb, rector, officiating. Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. in Walpole cemetery in Walpole. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Clifford B. Harrington Rites
SHAFTSBURY — The funeral service for Clifford B. Harrington, who died Oct. 26, 2002, was held Tuesday at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Gratz, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Johnsonville, N.Y., officiating. Burial followed in Waite cemetery in Shaftsbury.
Bearers were Reuben Harrington, Joel Harrington, Andrew Squires, Matthew Holton, Francis Kinney and Kevin Hoyt.
Members of American Legion Post 13 and Veterans of Foreign Wars offered their services Monday evening at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
A reception for friends and family was held at the Harrington residence on Meadow Lane following the committal service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
Gracia S. Welsh Rites
NORTH BENNINGTON — The funeral Mass for Gracia Stratton Welsh, who died Oct. 24, 2002, was celebrated Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington with the Rev. Edward Howard, pastor, and the Rev. Michael A. Demasi, retired pastor, co-officiating. Burial followed in St. John’s cemetery in North Bennington.
Organist was Donald McMahon and soloist was Philip Elwell.
Bearers were grandsons, Barry Becker, Brian Becker, Peter Becker, Sam Becker, Paul Becker Jr., Michael Mattison and David Elwell Jr.
A prayer service at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home preceded the funeral Mass.
The wake service was offered Monday evening at the funeral home by the Rev. Howard and the Rev. Demasi.
A remembrance gathering was held in St. John the Baptist Parish Hall following the committal service.
