Walter A. Straw
VERSHIRE — Walter Alan Straw, 95, died April 5, 2003, at the Blue Spruce Home for the Retired in Bradford.
He was born July 5, 1907, in Vershire, the son of Frederick and Edith (Lake) Straw.
He attended school in Vershire.
He married
Hazel Aldrich on Sept. 10, 1933. She died in 1992.
Mr. Straw worked as a logger and farmer. He logged for Malmquest Wood Products in Post Mills.
He enjoyed horses and telling stories.
Survivors include a son, Duane Straw of Ferrisburgh; three daughters, Marilyn Williams of Ascutney, Charlotte Brooks of East Barre and Phyllis Brown of Bradford; a brother, Everett Straw of Chelsea; 17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Evelyn Griffin and Avis Straw; and his caregiver and brother-in-law, Wayne Brooks.
The graveside service will be held Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. in Post Mills cemetery in Post Mills (Thetford).

Donald C. Hamel
Donald C. Hamel of Rutland died April 10, 2003, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home in Rutland.
Blank Infant
PROCTOR — Eva Ojala Blank, infant daughter of Brian and Aili (Ojala) Blank, died April 9, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include her mother and father of Stratton Mountain; her maternal grandfather, David Ojala of Mammoth Lakes, Calif.; her maternal grandmother, Linda Corley of Wilmer, Ala.; her maternal great-grandmother, Mary Ojala of Proctor; her paternal grandparents, Walter and Jane Blank of Ghent, N.Y.; and aunts, uncles, great-aunts and great-uncles.
The graveside service will be held in Riverside cemetery in Proctor at the convenience of the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.
James W. Boretos
HIGHLAND, Md. — James W. Boretos, 65, a former resident of Rutland, Vt., died April 7, 2003, in Columbia.

Earl E. Lanphere
HYDE PARK — Earl E. Lanphere, 98, of Proctor and formerly of Hyde Park, died April 8, 2003, at Mountain View Center Genesis Elder Care in Rutland.
He was born May 22, 1904, in Belvidere, the son of Edson and Lottie (Eldred) Lanphere.
He attended Belvidere schools and Lyndon Normal School, and graduated from Wentworth Institute in Boston.
He married
Evelyn Moody on July 4, 1926. She died in 2002.
Mr. Lanphere was a draftsman, builder, carpenter, and held a degree as a mining engineer in rock composition. He worked at a chemical company in Medford, Mass., and later at the Golden Keene Co. in Keene, N.H., where he build the first floatation plant in the United States. He also worked as a mechanical engineer at the Ruberoid-GAF Mines in Lowell for many years.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran.
He was a member of the Keene (N.H.) Lodge of Masons.
Survivors include two daughters, Thelma Mason of Newfane and Linda Gilmore of Center Rutland; a sister, Ruby Schoolcraft of Hyde Park; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Eleanor Mauthe, in 1970.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, April 26, at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church in Hyde Park. Burial will be in Jedediah Hyde cemetery in Hyde Park.
There will be no calling hours.

Helen Vignoe Rites
The funeral service for Helen Vignoe, 84, of Rutland, who died April 4, 2003, was held Thursday at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. W. Andre Houle, pastor of St. Peter’s Church, officiating.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Elizabeth A. Brough Rites
CASTLETON — The funeral Mass for Elizabeth Ann Brough, 68, who died April 6, 2003, was celebrated Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton with the Rev. Charles Danielson, administrator, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Hillside cemetery in Castleton.
Organist was Hazel Boals and soloist was Mary Jo Knapp.
Bearers were John Brough, James Brough, Patrick McMorrow, Timothy Brough, Brig. Gen. Edward O’Neill and Edward Brough.
A Christian wake service was held Wednesday at the Durfee Funeral Home by the Rev. Danielson.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Durfee Funeral Home in Fair Haven.
Jerry D. Reid
NORTH HARTLAND — Jerry D. Reid, 63, died April 9, 2003, at his home.
He was born Dec. 11, 1939, in Waldron, Ark., the son of James and Della (Graham) Reid.
He served in the U.S. Navy as an electrician for 23 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer in 1981. He then lived in Maine for a time, where he worked as a hydroelectric operator. In 1986 he moved to North Hartland and operated the hydroelectric station from 1995 until retiring in 2002 because of cancer.
Mr. Reid served on the Water Board in North Hartland.
He enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred (Daniels) Reid of North Hartland; a son, Barry Reid of Zion, Ill.; three stepsons, John Hresko of Belchertown, Mass., James Daniels of Monson, Mass., and Thomas Hresko of Fort Monmouth, N.J.; a stepdaughter, Sonja Carroll of Belchertown, Mass.; a brother, Larry Reid of California; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Brian Reid; and a grandson.
The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Hartland Community Church.

The Rev. Thomas L. Hayes
WINDSOR — The Rev. Thomas Lee Hayes, 70, died April 9, 2003, in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born in 1932 in Dayton, Ohio.
He graduated from Oberlin College with a bachelor’s degree in 1953, and later from Episcopal Divinity School in 1957 with a master’s of divinity degree.
In 1960 the Rev. Hayes was named rector of St. Thomas-in-the-Fields in Gibsonia, Pa., and served there until 1966. He then served as the executive director of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship from 1966 to 1969. In 1969 the Rev. Hayes served as pastor to the American deserter community in Sweden. In 1971 he was awarded the Proctor Fellowship at Episcopal Divinity School. He later moved to the Finger Lakes area of New York state, where he and his wife, Janet, started a conference center called The Household. He also worked for a time as a winemaker at High Tor Vineyards and Glenora Winery. In 1998 the Rev. Hayes became canon pastor at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Windsor.
In 1991 the Rev. Hayes was awarded the Nevin Sayre Peacemaker Award. He was the author of two books, numerous hymns and essays, and was the editor of a newsletter.
He was a member of the Windsor Players.
He enjoyed research, history and genealogy.
Survivors include his second wife, Linda (Huddle) Hayes; two daughters, Sharon Hayes of Harwich, Mass., and Jennifer White of Provincetown, Mass.; a brother, Richard Hayes of Denton, Md.; a granddaughter; and nine nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Janet (Hallenbeck) Hayes, in 1981.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Windsor with the Bishop of Vermont, Thomas Ely officiating.

Carl P. Howard
WEATHERSFIELD — Carl P. Howard, 22, died April 9, 2003, at Valley Regional Hospital Emergency Room in Claremont, N.H.
He was born April 11, 1980, in South Weymouth, Mass., the son of Charles and Barbara (Casey) Howard.
He graduated from Windsor High School in 1998 and attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph for a year.
He worked at H.C. Steele Construction in Ascutney for the past four years.
Mr. Howard was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor.
He enjoyed skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and rebuilding cars and trucks.
Survivors include his mother of Weathersfield and his father of Carver, Mass.; two sisters, Trina Howard of Boston and Marcie Howard of Weathersfield; his maternal grandfather, James Casey of Plymouth, Mass.; his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Loraine Howard of Scituate, Mass.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur, pastor, officiating.
Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.

Frank W. Brown Sr.
WEATHERSFIELD — Frank William Brown Sr., 86, died April 9, 2003, at Mount Ascutney Hospital.
He was born April 17, 1916, the son of Charles and Mabel Brown.
He married
Rachel Foster on Oct. 8, 1935. She died in 2002.
Mr. Brown was a dairy farmer for many years, and later worked as a plumber and carpenter.
He was a lister for the town of Weathersfield for 36 years, and was awarded the Weathersfield Service Award in 1993 and again in 1999 for outstanding service to his community signed by Gov. Howard Dean.
He was a longtime historian and storyteller.
Survivors include five daughters, Beverly Brunt of Perkinsville, Alice Fletcher of North Troy, Betty Davidson of Springfield, Norma Magoon of Lancaster, N.H., and Linda Clough of West Hartford; two sons, Richard Brown of Springfield and Randy Brown of Weathersfield; 80 grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by three sons, Frank Brown Jr. in January 2003, Raymond and Robert.
The graveside service will be held at a later date.
