ERMA HURTEAU CARMAN

WEST SWANTON - Mrs. Erma Hurteau Carman, 84, a longtime resident of Lakewood Drive in West Swanton, died Friday evening, Jan. 11, 2002, in the Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans.

Erma was born in Alburg, Jan. 23, 1917, the daughter of the late Francis and Anna (Gagnon) Hurteau. She graduated with the Class of 1935 from Rouses Point High School and went on to receive her degree in education from the University of Vermont graduating in the Class of 1939.

On June 20, 1960, she was married to John Andrew Carman who predeceased her on Oct. 13, 2000.

Erma spent most of her working life in the field of education, beginning as a teacher for three years at the Bush School in Alburg, 10 years at the former Swanton High School and retiring after teaching eight years at Edmunds Junior High School in Burlington. She was a member of the National Education Association and a longtime parishioner of The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Erma leaves two brothers, Clarence Hurteau and his wife Norma of Georgia, and Douglas Hurteau and his wife Doris of Ogdensburg, N.Y. Also surviving are her two sisters, Cressy and her husband Robert Lyng of Malone, N.Y. and Virginia and her husband Dr. Peter Bartelloni of Easton, Conn., two-step granddaughters, three step-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a stepdaughter, Mrs. Wayne (Beverly) Eytcheson in 1974.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2002, at 10 a.m. from The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 65 Canada St., Swanton. The pastor, Father John J. Meagher, SSE, will be the celebrant and homilist. Interment will follow in the Carman lot in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton today, Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Erma's memory may be made to, Missisquoi Valley Rescue, P.O. Box 22, Swanton 05488.

ISABELLE LeBEL

ST. ALBANS -- Mrs. Isabelle LeBel, age 87, died Thursday, Jan. 10, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care. She was born daughter of the late Emile and Louise (Chaput) Plante, Dec. 19, 1914, in St. Cloude, Quebec. She married Lionel LeBel, who pre-deceased her Feb. 10, 1982. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the Ladies of St. Anne.

Her survivors include her two daughters, Marthe Root and her husband Ronald of Essex Jct., Christi Ane Mason and her husband John of Bedford, N.H.; and a son, Pierre LeBel and his wife Joanne of Haverhill, Mass.; a brother, Martial Plante of Danville, Quebec; a daughter-in-law Danielle LeBel of St. Albans; several grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was pre-deceased three children, Louise in 1982, Guy in 1999, and Raymond in 2001.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church. Interment will follow in the LeBel family lot in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 S. Main St., from 7-9 p.m. on Friday. Memorials may be made in Masses. Arrangements are entrusted to Brady & Levesque Funeral Home.

EUNICE DORIS RAYMOND

MILTON -- Eunice Doris Raymond, 71, died Tuesday evening, Jan. 8, 2002, at the Roncalli Health Center in St. Albans, surrounded by her loving family.

Eunice was born in Fairfax on Sept. 25, 1930, the daughter of Elias and Mary (Murray) Gaudette.

She enjoyed listening to country music and was an avid Jeff Gordon fan.

Eunice is survived by her children Arnold Rivers and his wife DiAnne of Georgia, Pauline Barton of Milton, Donna Wagner and her husband Bruce of Colchester, and Michael Rivers and his fiancé Becky Bass of Franklin, N.H.

She was predeceased by her daughter Kim Marie at birth and the father of her children, Arnold F. Rivers in 1981.

She is also survived by her grandchildren Sherry, Jeanne, Becky, Aaron, Renae, Donna, Patrick, Lindsey, Kyle and Zachery; by her little angels, her great-grandchildren Tyler, Jordan, Morgan, Austin, Dylan, Emily and Robert; her brothers and sisters James Gaudette, Dorothy Metivier, Katherine Beaudin, Raymond Gaudette and Eleanor Foy; and over 50 nieces and nephews.

She was also predeceased by her sisters Mary Metivier and Elsene Gaudette; her brothers Paul, Ralph, Kenneth, Louis, Robert, Roy and Vernon Gaudette.

Eunice loved life and lived it to its fullest and will be sadly missed for her fiesty spirit and sense of humor by her family and everyone who knew her.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, at 10 a.m. in the Minor Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Soutiere officiating. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Friday, Jan. 11, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Minor Funeral Home, located at 237 Rt. 7-South in Milton.

ADELINE CORREIA WAUGHTEL

TROY, N.H./FALL RIVER, Mass. -- Adeline Correia Waughtel, age 92, widow of the late John Waughtel, passed on to a better place on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at The Genesis Home for Eldercare in Keene, N.H.

She was born in Somerset, Mass. Aug. 22, 1909, daughter of the late Francisco Correia and MaryAnne Correia Valerio.

She is survived by her two daughters, Carrie Mentzer of Troy, N.H., and Sheila Greer and her husband Robert of Swanton; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers, Tony and Leo Valerio; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son-in-law Robert Mentzer, Jr.; a granddaughter, Penny Mentzer; three brothers, Wilfred Correia, John Valerio, Manuel Valerio; and two sisters, Adelaide (Correia) Mercure and Mary (Valerio) Sylvia.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Nativity in Swanton at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, by the Rev. John Meagher, SSE, pastor. Burial will take place in Fall River, Mass. in the spring.

The family would like to thank The Genesis Home for the kind and loving care given to Adeline in her final days and local parishioners of Nativity Parish and friends for their prayers.

DORIS ANNA BLAIR

ALBURG - Mrs. Doris Anna Blair, 81, a longtime Alburg resident died late Thursday evening, Jan. 3, 2002, in the Fletcher Allen Health Care Facility in Burlington.

Mrs. Blair was born in South Hero, June 22, 1920, the daughter of the late Edward and Bertha (Santor) Ducharme. She attended the Cathedral High School in Burlington as well as Mount Saint Joseph's Academy in Rutland. On June 20, 1940 she was married to Roderick Blair who predeceased her on Nov. 8, 1978.

For over 30 years Mrs. Blair drove school bus in the Alburg area, first being self-employed and later for Don G. Bell, Inc. of Swanton. She also owned and operated Bell-Mott Lodge and WindSong Cottage tourist homes in Alburg for almost 30 years. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Parish and a former member of the Ladies of St. Anne.

She is survived by a son, Roderick Blair of Essex and six daughters and their husbands, Frances and Michael Tourville of Clemson, S.C., Roberta Blair Bruley and O.W. "Bud" of St. Albans, Ronda Desautels of Burlington, Randolyn Blair Bennett and Thomas of Montgomery, Raylene Blair McFeeters and Charles of St. Albans and Ronita Blair Pretty and Geoffrey of Alburg. Also surviving are two very close friends who she thought as much of as her own children, Judy Poquette Sherrer of St. Albans and Wally Zablonski of Alburg as well as her grandchildren and their spouses, Chris and Tracy, Marni and Dave, Jeff, Jill and Geoff, Jason and Diane, Christina and Rob, Rod, Jeff, Richie, Renee and Greg, Courtney, Stephenie, KaSondra, Meaghan, Skyelour and Renee; several additional great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A granddaughter, Rebecca Blair and a son-in-law, Wayne Desautels, predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002, at 11 a.m. from St. Amadeus Roman Catholic Church, Main Street, Alburg Village. Interment will follow in the Blair family lot in St. Amadeus Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton, today, Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Gifts in Mrs. Blair's memory may be made to the Alburg Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 223, Alburg, 05440.

EARL M. PLAYFUL

JEFFERSONVILLE -- Earl Morton Playful, age 86, passed away early Friday morning, Jan. 4, 2002, at Copley Hospital in Morrisville with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Cambridge, Aug. 12, 1915, son of the late Phil and Vesta (Gallup) Playful. He was a graduate of Cambridge High School Class of 1934, and married the former Elsie Chamberlin in Cambridge on May 25, 1940. He was an employee with Windridge Farms for a number of years and was later employed with I.B.M. of Essex Junction, retiring in 1977.

He unconditionally volunteered to assist his community as a Boy Scout leader for several years and as a masonic member of the former Warner Lodge #50, F&AM.

Earl was an avid outdoorsman and as a longtime member of the Vermont Trappers Association, he always looked forward to his trapping and fishing along Vermont's crystal clear streams. He fancied his guns and most deer seasons Earl could be found hunting his way through the prime hardwoods and rugged ridges of Sterling Mountain, a special place that offered him peace and comfort. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and true friend. His passing will be a tremendous loss to all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his devoted wife and loving caregiver throughout the years, Elsie (Chamberlin) Playful of Jeffersonville; a son, Philip Playful and his wife Cindy of Fairfield; a daughter, Mitchi King and her husband John of Colchester; a sister, Phyllis Kennedy of Chelsea; seven grandchildren, Wanda, Greta, Dennis, Gregory, Matthew, Stacy and Angie; two great-grandchildren, Kiley and Jordan; his very special friends, Greg, Phyllis, Doug, Ash and Evelyn; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Vern, Clyde and Buel Playful; and two sisters, Vera Rogers and Mary Booth.

Visiting hours were held on Sunday, Jan. 6, at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home from 2-4 p.m. A memorial service was to be held at the Second Congregational Church in Jeffersonville today, Monday, Jan. 7, at 11 a.m. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made in Earl's memory to Lamoille Home Health and Hospice, 54 Farr. Ave., Morrisville, Vt. 05661, or Cambridge Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 431, Jeffersonville, Vt. 05464. Arrangements are by the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home, 1176 Main St., Fairfax.

MARY A. BURNS

MONTGOMERY -- Mary A. Burns, age 73, wife of Earl Burns, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2002, at the Roncalli Health Center in St. Albans.

She was born Nov. 3, 1928, in Shelburne, the daughter of the late James and Catherine (Collier) Barnes.

She was a resident of Montgomery for the past 12 years and a former resident of Charlotte where Mr. and Mrs. Burns owned and operated the Old Lantern Campground for which she managed the restaurant, banquets, and receptions for 30 years, retiring in 1999. She was a former member and organist for Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in East Charlotte and a current member of St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Montgomery Center.

She is survived by her husband Earl Burns of Montgomery; one son and his wife, Richard and Barbara Burns of Montgomery; two daughters, Linda Blake and her husband Gary of Georgia, and Doris Wing of South Burlington; seven grandchildren, Jared and Jaime Blake, Ryan and Kelly Burns, Adam and Olivia Wing, and Jenna Reynolds; one brother, Francis Barnes of South Hero; three sisters, Geraldine Roberge, and her husband Joseph of Essex Jct., Martha Wyatt of Asheville, N.C., and Joyce Laughlin and her husband Warren of Ft. Meters, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Stephen Burns; and one brother, Richard Barnes.

Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore's Catholic Church in Montgomery Center with Rev. Frank Eksterowicz celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will be next spring in St. Isidore's Cemetery.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 1-3 and 6-9 p.m. at the Spears Funeral Home on 96 Dickinson Ave. in Enosburg Falls.

LEO GEORGE CUSHING

ST. ALBANS/VALDOSTA, Ga. - Leo George Cushing, 67, a lifelong resident of this area, went home to be with the Lord on Monday December 31, 2001, in Valdosta, Georgia following a lengthy illness. He was born in Essex Center, March 26, 1934, the son of the late Arthur and Edith (Norris) Cushing. On July 23, 1955, Leo married Jeannette Hatin in Holy Angels Church.

Leo attended schools in Fletcher and Enosburg Falls. He retired in 1978 after 40 years as a farmer and cheese maker. He loved fishing, camping, hunting and bowling. He was associated with his wife in her daycare for 25 years and was a foster parent for 12 years. The children all loved him, and he loved them. Recently Jeannette and Leo were caretakers of the Mt. View Campgrounds in Morrisville. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, # 1090 and was active with the Special Olympics. Leo was a member of the Holy Angels Church.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, , Jeanette (Hatin) Cushing, a son, Michael Cushing and his wife Bonnie of St. Albans, two daughters, Dianne Cushing and her fiancé Bob Ruell of Fairfield and Claire Cushing of Burlington, a brother, Lee Cushing and his wife Kay of Missouri, 10 grandchildren, Nicole and Lance Baker, Mathew, Amber and Josh Cushing, Krista and Alfred Florio, Hollie, Katie and twins Chris and Cody Jettie, one great granddaughter, Alyssa. His life was centered around his grandchildren and great granddaughter. He also leaves sisters in law and their husbands, Alice and Tony Baker of St. Albans Bay and Flossie and Pat Strout of Florida, nieces: Debbie and her husband Phil of New Jersey, Martha of New Hampshire, Suzie of New Hampshire, and Loraine of Fairfax, nephews, Bud of Fairfax and Francis Baker of St. Albans. Also many nieces and nephews in Missouri and several cousins.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at 11 a.m. in the Heald Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Binghamville Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the family through the funeral home to be used according to their wishes. Moose Lodge #1090 will conduct a memorial service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Visitation will be on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 So. Main St., St. Albans.

MEGAN ANN TESSIER

CAMBRIDGE -- Megan Ann Tessier, infant daughter of Carol Billado and Kevin Tessier died at birth Jan. 4, 2002 at the Northwestern Medical Center.

Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Interment will take in the spring at the Hillside Cemetery in Richford.

Spears Funeral Home in Enosburg Falls is in charge of arrangements.
