POMFRET — Daryl John Gourley, 43, died Feb. 1, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Cabot Funeral Home in Woodstock.
Howard E. Bowen
BENNINGTON — Howard E. Bowen, 88, a former resident of East Dorset, died Feb. 3, 2003, at his residence.
He was born Jan. 7, 1915, in Danby, the son of William and Jessie (Brown) Bowen.
He attended Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester and high school in Windsor, Ohio.
He married
Jessie Gaskell on June 12, 1957. She died in 1981.
Mr. Bowen had worked at several service stations in Manchester and was part owner of Walhers Hardware. He also worked for the State Liquor Control Board.
He was a member of the Congregational Church in East Dorset.
He was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves. He also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Cecil Bowen, Wilbur Bowen and Byron Bowen; and four sisters, Jennie Bennett, Ruth Mulvey, Mabel Costantino and Jessie Bowen.
Interment will take place in Park Lawn cemetery with a graveside service to be held at a later date in South Village cemetery in East Dorset.
There will be no calling hours.

Helen I. Underwood
BENNINGTON — Helen I. Underwood, 69, died Feb. 1, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 13, 1933, in Durham, N.C., the daughter of Harry and Lucie (Dudley) Platter.
She graduated from Palmer Memorial Institute in Sedalia, N.C., in 1951 and Boston University with a bachelor’s degree in 1955.
She married
Julius Underwood on Aug. 20, 1955, in Willow Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mrs. Underwood taught elementary education in Boston and later worked for Dr. Land at Polaroid Corp. She received her credentials in early childhood education and worked with the Chicago Childcare Association for 30 years, retiring in 1995 as a master teacher. She later moved to Bennington.
She was a member of Delta and NAEYC.
She was an accomplished artist who enjoyed painting, drawing and calligraphy. She also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include her husband of Bennington; a son, Steven Underwood of Round Lake, Ill.; a daughter, Valerie Underwood of Bennington; and a granddaughter.
A candlelight service will be held Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home in Bennington.

Laura M. Carpenter
BRATTLEBORO — Laura May Carpenter, 72, died Feb. 2, 2003, at Eden Park Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since 1992.
She was born Nov. 2, 1930, in St. Johnsbury, the daughter of Joseph and Bertha (Broughton) Mooney.
She attended St. Johnsbury Academy.
She married
Chester Carpenter on Aug. 10, 1947.
Mrs. Carpenter was a homemaker.
She was a former communicant of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in St. Johnsbury.
She enjoyed crocheting, reading and fishing.
Survivors include her husband; a son, Chester Carpenter Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn.; a daughter, Lynn Perry of Brattleboro; a brother, Melville Mooney of Concord; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Theodore Mooney.
A Catholic prayer service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Meetinghouse Hill cemetery.
Friends may call Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Brattleboro Fire Department, 103 Elliot St., Brattleboro, 05301, in care of Chief David Emery.

Lona A. Nelson
ALSTEAD, N.H. — Lona A. Nelson, 83, died Feb. 2, 2003, at Sullivan County Home in Unity.
She was born April 21, 1919, in Acworth, the daughter of Charles and Alma (Green) Westney.
She graduated from Vilas High School in 1936.
She married
Medrick Nelson on Nov. 12, 1956.
Mrs. Nelson worked at J&L in Springfield, Vt., and taught Sunday School.
She was a 55-year member of the Congregational Church in Acworth, the South Acworth and Walpole Grange, the Farm Bureau and the Female Charitable Society. She was also president of the Acworth Parents Club.
She enjoyed gardening and reading.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Lindsey Nelson of Claremont and Bennie Nelson of Newport; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles Westney; and four sisters, Mary Hemphill, Bernice Rugg, Agnes Derrington and Mabel Brodin.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Church on the Hill in Acworth.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls, Vt.

Elizabeth C. Pease
CHARLESTOWN, N.H. — Elizabeth C. Pease, 90, died Jan. 31, 2003, at Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont.
She was born Sept. 11, 1912, in Saxtons River, the daughter of Franklin and Mary (Stewart) Jones.
She graduated from Bellows Falls High School and attended nursing school.
She married
Burt Pease on June 6, 1936.
Mrs. Pease worked for Springfield Hospital and Rockingham Memorial Hospital, retiring in 1977. After her retirement, she was a companion to Mrs. Sawyer in Charlestown.
She was a member of the Congregational Church and Senior Center in Charlestown.
She enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Boynton of Charlestown; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Jones; and two sisters, Olive McBride and Rachael Hitchcock.
The graveside service will be held at a later date in Forest Hill cemetery in Charlestown.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Fenton & Hennessey Funeral Home in Bellows Falls.
Harry Stern Rites
SPRINGFIELD — The funeral service for Harry Stern, 88, who died Jan. 29, 2003, was held Monday at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield with Rabbi Edward Boraz of the Roth Center for Jewish Life in Hanover, N.H., officiating. Burial followed in Temple Meyer David cemetery in Claremont, N.H.
Bearers were Neil Stern, Keith Stern, Charles Stern, Philip Stern and James Ward.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel.
Germaine T. Hrydziusko Rites
WINDSOR — The funeral Mass for Germaine T. “Polly” Hrydziusko, 71, who died Jan. 28, 2003, was celebrated Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Windsor with the Rev. Paul Belhumeur officiating. Karl Pietkiewicz assisted at the Mass. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Francis cemetery in Windsor.
Organist was Gerald Grimo.
Pallbearers were Steven Bushey, Charles Bushey, Gregory Bushey, Peter Cousino, Brian McLaughlin and Robert Hydrisko.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Knight Funeral Home in Windsor.
Dorothy E. Garrity Rites
BRATTLEBORO — The funeral Mass for Dorothy E. “Dottie” Garrity, 89, who died Jan. 29, 2003, was celebrated Saturday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Francis McMahon of St. Michael’s Church officiating. George Parmenter assisted at Mass. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Michael’s cemetery.
Organist was Peggy Goldyn and soloist was Regina Reffi.
Pallbearers were grandsons Dana Fletcher, Daniel Fletcher, Dennis Fletcher, David Fletcher, Donald Fletcher, Duane Fletcher and Douglas Fletcher.
A reception was held in West Brattleboro following the service.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro.
Roger W. Kozyra Sr. Rites
BRATTLEBORO —A Catholic prayer service for Roger W. Kozyra Sr., 85, who died Jan. 30, 2003, was held Sunday at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home in Brattleboro with the Rev. Francis McMahon of St. Michael’s Church officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Joseph’s cemetery.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atamaniuk Funeral Home.
Howard K. Reed Rites
BRATTLEBORO — The funeral service for Howard K. Reed, 88, who died Jan. 28, 2003, was held Monday at the Atamaniuk Funeral Home with the Rev. Larry Siebrands, pastor of First Congregational Church in Walpole, N.H., officiating. Burial followed in New Westminster cemetery.
American Legion Post 5 of Brattleboro and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Carl W. Dessaint Post 1034 provided military honors. Commander David Wright presented the flag to Mr. Reed’s wife, Ethel. Taps were read at the closing of the service.
Pallbearers were Howard Reed Jr., Jonathan Brownell, Peter Davidson, Patrick Reed, Arthur Tedford and Howard Silvernale.
A reception, hosted by friends and neighbors of the Applewood Senior Community, was held in the community center in Walpole, N.H., following the service.
