Arvid B. Carlson Rites
MANCHESTER — A memorial service was held Saturday for Arvid Bruce Carlson of Manchester and Hilton Head, S.C., at the First Congregational Church in Manchester Village.
Mr. Carlson, 61, died Jan. 24, 2003, while vacationing in Mexico.
The Rev. Steven Berry, pastor, officiated with the Rev. Jordan Dickinson, associate pastor.
Linda Huekel served as organist.
Following the service, a fellowship was held in the church vestry.
Burial will be in Dellwood cemetery at a later date.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Brewster Funeral Home.
Elizabeth Champine Rites
BENNINGTON — A graveside committal service for Elizabeth Champine was held Saturday at Southview cemetery in North Adams, Mass. The Rev. Michael Demasi officiated.
Mrs. Champine died Jan. 29, 2003, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
Harry J. Lasell Rites
SPRINGFIELD — A memorial service for Harry J. Lasell, 89, who died Jan. 29, 2003, at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland, N.H., was held Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Springfield.
The Rev. William Scherwerts, pastor, officiated.
Kay Burge was organist. Elaine Rogers was soloist.
Reader was Roger Hammond.
Burial will be in Oakland cemetery in Springfield at a later date.
Arrangements were under the direction of Davis Memorial Chapel.
Helen I. Underwood
BENNINGTON — Helen I. Underwood, 69, died on Feb. 1, 2003, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.
Arrangements are under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
Donald E. Sargent Sr.
BRISTOL — Donald E. Sargent Sr., 64, died Feb. 2, 2003, at his home in Vergennes.
He was born April 26, 1938 in Weybridge, the son of Leslie and Mae (Lamott) Sargent.
He attended Bristol High School.
Mr. Sargent served in the U.S. Army in 1956 at Camp Drum.
He worked as a logger, for Rutland Tree Service, and then as a self-employed carpenter.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool and golf.
Survivors include his son, Donald Sargent Jr. of Lincoln; two daughters, Donna Gero of Bristol and Patsy Munson of Weybridge; four granddaughters; a step-grandson; three sisters, Barbara Martel of New Haven, Viola Emmons of Bristol, and Saundria Jimmo of Lincoln; three brothers, Ted Sargent of Shoreham, Leslie Sargent of Georgia, and Stanley Sargent of Lincoln; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Amanada New; two sisters, Nancy Ash and Patsy Sargent; four brothers, Charlie, Eugene, Raymond and Jimmy.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol. Burial will be at a later date.
There are no public calling hours.

Nancy S. Kurrelmeyer
WHITING — Nancy Snow Kurrelmeyer died Feb. 1, 2003.
The Sanderson Funeral Home in Middlebury is in charge of the arrangements.
Elsie Rice
SHOREHAM — Elsie Rice, 79, died Jan. 31, 2003 in Orwell.
She was born on April 26, 1924, in Shoreham, the daughter of Arthur and Beatrice (Spaulding) Brileya.
She was a lifelong resident of Shoreham.
She married
Harley Rice in 1944.
Mrs. Rice was a seamstress at VanRaalte for 28 years, and later worked at Shoreham Co-op for more than 20 years.
She enjoyed bingo, reading, gardening, sledding, and collecting owls. She was a great cook.
She was a member of the Shoreham Congregational Church.
Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Roberta Clark of Lincoln, Beatrice LaPell of East Middlebury, and Rani Fallon of Whiting; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Arnold Brileya of Shoreham; a sister, Thelma Christian of Orwell; her caregivers and special friends, Fred and Barbara Russell of Orwell. She was predeceased by two sons, Mark and Harold; a grandson, Christopher Clark; two sisters, Ruth Rice and Lucille Bigelow.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Shoreham Congregational Church.
Friends may call today from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sanderson Funeral Service in Middlebury. Burial will be in Lakeview cemetery in Shoreham at a later date.

Anna Churchill Duffy
Anna Churchill Duffy, 96, a former longtime resident of North Chittenden, died February 2, 2003, at her home. She was born in Chittenden, July 31, 1906, the daughter of Charles H. Churchill Jr. and Laura (Herrick) Churchill.
She graduated from Prospect Heights School of Nursing, Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1927. She was the only surviving member of her class to celebrate her 75th anniversary as an R.N. last year. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton, a past treasurer of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church Sodality and a past member of the Nickwackett Club in North Chittenden. She married
Joseph P. Duffy Sr. on June 8, 1929, at St. Gregory’s Church in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Anne was known for her thoughtfulness towards others in good times and bad, always making herself available as needed. She was especially noted for remembering birthdays and other special or important occasions, big or small, with cards and letters. She enjoyed letter writing to several pen pals. She loved having family around her and was always quick to join in playing cards and games with them. The tradition of giving M&M’s to three generations will be a memory that will live in our hearts forever.
She is survived by her devoted children, Patricia (Duffy) and Walter Schubert of East Greenwich, R.I., Joseph P. Jr. and Mary Duffy of Norwalk, Conn., William R. and Charlene Duffy of Marlboro, Mass., Anne (Duffy) and James Meade of Hilton Head, S.C., and Margaret (Duffy) and Gilbert Nadeau Jr. of Lake Bomoseen, Vt., with whom she made her home. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a half brother, Newton Churchill of Salem, Ore.
Anne was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Joseph P. Duffy Sr. on May 3, 1992, and a daughter, Marie in 1941. Also, seven sisters, Edna McNally, Ruth Churchill, Reba Wetmore, Ella Paine, Lena Ketcham, Lavina Churchill and Catherine Simpson, and one brother, Glen H. Churchill; half sisters, Amanda Cox, Ida Patch and half brother, Charles Riford Churchill.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 6, 11 a.m., at St. Alphonsus Church, Pittsford, Vermont, followed by a reception in the church hall. Burial will be in the spring at the parish cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, February 5, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Barnard Funeral Home, Route 7, in Pittsford.

Rogers Infant
Fiona Skye Rogers, infant daughter of Marc and Megan Rogers, died Feb. 3, 2003, at Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are pending at the Aldous Funeral Home.

Kenneth A. Remhoff
FAIR HAVEN — The memorial Mass for Kenneth A. Remhoff, 57, who died Nov. 29, 2002, will be held Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Church in Fair Haven.
Friends are invited to join his family and co-workers at the school across the street from the church following the service.

Robert C. Teachout Rites
The funeral service for Robert C. Teachout, 86, of Rutland, who died Feb. 1, 2003, was held Monday at the Clifford Funeral Home with the Rev. Edward Hackett Jr., pastor of the United Methodist Church of Rutland, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in East Clarendon cemetery.
Organist was Karen James.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Clifford Funeral Home.
Margaret L. Stone
BROOKFIELD — Margaret L. Stone, 86, died Feb. 3, 2003, at Mayo Health Care in Northfield.
She was born May 7, 1916, in Brookfield, the daughter of Carl and Ruth (Hall) Stone.
She attended school in North Randolph and Brookfield, and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1921 and Burlington Business College.
She worked for National Life in Montpelier for 34 years.
She was a member of the Congregational Church in Brookfield and the Brookfield Historical Society.
She enjoyed hooking and braiding rugs, oil painting, reading gardening, skiing and snowshoeing, and traveling.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Hall of Arvada, Colo.; nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy and Ruth.
The graveside service will be held at a later date in Brookfield Village cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Paul E. Sowa
QUECHEE — Paul E. Sowa, 59, died Feb. 3, 2003, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born April 10, 1943, in Chicopee, Mass., the son of Max and Genevieve (Cyran) Sowa.
He graduated from high school in Chicopee, Dartmouth College in New Hampshire in 1965, and the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth in 1966.
Mr. Sowa worked as a field engineer with General Electric in nuclear power plant construction, and started his own consulting firm, Construction Management Services, in 1977.
He was an avid sportsman, and enjoyed skiing and boating. He also ran the New York City Marathon in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Sowa of Quechee, whom he married
in June 1966 in Chicopee, Mass.; two sons, Michael Sowa of Boonton Township, N.J., and Mark Sowa of New York, N.Y.; a sister, Patricia O’Brien of Boston, Mass.; and five grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Knight Funeral Home in White River Junction.
Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
